Obama tech appointee office raided; Update: Bribery sting

posted at 11:33 am on March 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If Barack Obama thought the nomination nightmare would end soon, an FBI raid today extended and deepened the REM cycle.  Obama announced the appointment of Vivek Kundra as the Chief Information Officer of the Obama White House last week, but today Kundra has search warrants rather than Google searches on his mind:

Federal agents this morning are searching the Judiciary Square office of Washington, D.C.’s Chief Technology Officer.

The search is part of “an ongoing investigation,” said a spokeswoman for the FBI’s D.C. Field Office, Lindsay Gotwin, said. She declined to comment further.

The outgoing Chief Technology Officer, Vivek Kundra, was appointed last week Chief Information Officer by the Obama administration.

Obama has nominated a number of people with tax problems and conflicts of interest that floated to the surface after their appointments were publicly announced.  He has lost three Cabinet appointments, two to tax problems, and his Chief Performance Officer, Nancy Killefer, over her tax issues.  The raid on the DC CTO’s office will confirm again the impression that Team Obama has a real problem in vetting potential appointments.

So far, nothing is known of the investigation or the potential charges.  More will undoubtedly be forthcoming, and none of it will reflect well on the White House.  Didn’t they bother to check with their own Department of Justice in vetting Kundra?

Update: The Washington Post reports that the FBI conducted a bribery sting and arrested one of Kundar’s aides:

An official in the D.C. government’s office of the chief technology officer has been arrested in a federal bribery sting, according to law enforcement sources. The FBI has raided the technology office this morning and agents are continuing to search for evidence, sources said.

Yusuf Acar, 40, was taken into custody this morning by FBI agents at his home in Northwest Washington, the sources said. The nature of the charges could not be determined. Channing Phillips, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, declined to comment on the arrest, saying the case “is under seal.”

Federal authorities this morning arrested a second person, Sushil Bansal, 41, of Fairfax County, in the sting operation this morning. According to his company’s website, Bansal used to work in the D.C. government and later founded Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation, an information technology consulting firm based in the District. That company has several contracts with D.C. government agencies, including the technology office and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Last August, he was awarded the Association of Indians in America’s Entrepenuer of the Year Award.

Wow.  Acar had an annual salary of over $127,000, which apparently isn’t enough to keep officials from taking bribes in DC.  What would Acar have done for people to offer him bribes in the first place?  How far up the ladder would this corruption go?  I imagine the Senate will be wondering the same thing, or at least some members of it.

I give Kundar until Friday to withdraw.  Bets?

So, there you go. The length of time it takes getalife to get his marching orders from Daily Kos is around 90 minutes. And it looks like they went with option (a), the “not the target” response. That’s a popular choice; the Left likes that one as it allows their politicians to not take heat from associations with reverends or terrorists. Now, if you’re a Republican, of course, this rule doesn’t apply.

D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer employee Yusuf Acar and Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation (AITC) President and CEO Sushil Bansal have been arrested in a federal bribery sting.

Kundra got swept out of that sting via Obama’s appointment. The single week interlude of time between the appt. March 4th and the raid March 12th is enough time for the FBI to initiate, conduct and conclude an investigation of Kundra’s former office. That’s Obama’s Socialist Efficiency for you.

I’m not one to choke on a gnat but swallow a camel.

Aside from Kundra’s obvious involvement in the federal bribery corruption (Obama’s own modus operandi), what is the citizenship status of Yusuf Acar and Sushil Bansal?

Wait a minute! What does the mayor’s spokesman know about the targets of the FBI raid? Furthermore, are we to believe the Chief Technology Officer (Kundra) had no idea of shennanigan’s of his Chief Security Officer (Acar)?!? I think not. If Acar is guilty then Kundra is either wholely incompetent or corrupt to the core. Either way, it’s scary to think he is now the CTO for our country.

There has been foul smells of corruption coming from the DC IT for years now. I am not surprised. Just surprised it’s actually being addressed. I had thought it was that dirty little secret that you politely ignore the way it’s treated around DC Metro area.

An idea for the next Donald Trump reality series: The Journeyman. Take all of Obama’s former staff and almost nominees for federal office and have them compete for who gets hired last. They get hired in order of degree of corruption. So, in each episode, each of the contestants goes into elaborate detail on their crimes and misdemeanors, and at the end of each episode, we hear the Donald’s inimitable, “You’re hired.” The very last person hired is, of course, the one with the least amount of corruption, which in Chicago goes by the moniker, Loser.

Does anyone remember Clinton had a Technology Czar?

To correct a few posters on here, there are CIOs and CTOs – in each agency and each branch of government. There is a reason these branches are not on the same system or answer to one person – checks and balances. While I understand how frustrating it is to be behind in technology in the government, there is a security reason (among many other reasons) why certain modern technologies (like OpenSource which Kundra champions) is not employed in government or why things move so slowly (which is why Clinton’s Czar quit). I can’t find the article now, but it quoted Kundra as being surprised that the government was so behind. Does that sound like an experienced CTO? As someone working in DC, he should have known that AND the reasons behind it! Yeesh! Sometimes I think when inside the beltway I’m surrounded by idiots!

One promise President Pinocchio did keep so far:
CHANGE
–dhunter

Through his Audacity of Lies, this Pinocchio has yet to lose affinity for the rescuing blue fairy, whether the Lovely Maiden with Azure Hair as his sister or the old hag as his mother, adorning every emblem with her color, but never respecting promises made.

“Pinocchio, you wicked boy!” Geppetto cried out. “You are not yet finished, and you start out by being impudent to your poor old father. Very bad, my son, very bad!” The legs and feet still had to be made. As soon as they were done, Geppetto felt a sharp kick on the tip of his nose. “I deserve it!” he said to himself. “I should have thought of this before I made him. Now it’s too late!”

“Shall I tell you something?” asked Pinocchio, who was beginning to lose patience. “Of all the trades in the world, there is only one that really suits me. That of eating, drinking, sleeping, playing, and wandering around from morning till night [campaigning]. Careful, ugly Cricket [critic]! If you make me angry, you’ll be sorry!” At these last words, Pinocchio jumped up in a fury, took a hammer from the bench, and smashed the Cricket dead!

Pinocchio sought Dame Fortune in the City of Simple Simons. On his way, he joins Assassins who abuse him. The blue fairy living near the forest rescues Pinocchio and chides him. “Lies, my boy, are known in a moment. There are two kinds of lies, lies with short legs and lies with long noses.” Healing him, she sends him home. But instead, Pinocchio again joins the Assassins to visit the City of Simple Simons [finding what Obama's crooked deal makes of America].

Entering, Pinocchio noticed that all the streets were filled with hairless dogs, yawning from hunger; with sheared sheep, trembling with cold; with combless chickens, begging for a grain of wheat; with large butterflies, unable to use their wings because they had sold all their lovely colors; with tailless peacocks, ashamed to show themselves; and with bedraggled pheasants, scuttling away hurriedly, grieving for their bright feathers of gold and silver, lost to them forever.

They reach the Field of Wonders [federal bail-outs] where Pinocchio plants his gold coins and tends them for produce. Pinocchio loses his gold pieces and, in punishment for having been robbed, is sentenced to four months in prison. On route to serving time, observers scoff at the simpletons who believe everything they hear and who allow themselves to be caught so easily in the traps set for them. “I beg your pardon,” Pinocchio interrupts his jailer, “I, too, am a thief.” “In that case you also are free,” said the Jailer bowing low and opening the door of the prison for Pinocchio to run out and away.

In a Marionette’s life there’s always a BUT which is apt to spoil everything.

Unfortunately for the world, there are emotionally needy characters like Geppetto and the Blue Fairy whose good intentions plague the world with unintended consequences and failed results.

There is no happily ever after, as if the obsessively cruel and destructive liar who refuses reformation is magically transformed into a responsible POTUS.

The raid on the DC CTO’s office will confirm again the impression that Team Obama has a real problem in vetting potential appointments.

It’s not the fact that so many of barry’s appointees have ethics and corruption problems, being a “democrat official” is by definition being a liar. They can’t even tell their own followers what they are really all about. What’s amazing is that they are getting caught. That seems a little fishy to me, democrats being held responsible? Could it be a smokescreen for some bigger criminal sliding through?

peacenprosperity on March 12, 2009 at 4:58 PM

The raid on the DC CTO’s office will confirm again the impression that Team Obama has a real problem in vetting potential appointments.

Another way of looking at the vetting process is to postulate that they were looking for the biggest crooks that they thought they might be able to get seated. If that is what they were doing, they were expecting to get a lot of rejects as well as some seats e.g. Geithner.

Okaaay, we finally have some poignant details and Ed may win his bet after all. Source: Obama official on leave after FBI raids

Excerpts:

At the court hearing, Yusuf Acar, the acting chief security officer in the city’s technology office, was ordered held without bond pending a hearing Tuesday. Prosecutors said $70,000 in cash was found during a search of Acar’s Washington home and that he posed a serious flight risk.

Was that money found in his freezer?

Acar worked under Kundra, Obama’s pick to coordinate federal computer systems. Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs would not say whether the White House knew the investigation was under way when it named Kundra last week, but called the case “a serious matter.”

Let’s hope not!

Authorities say Acar and Bansal, along with others, defrauded the government through a variety of schemes, including billing the city for items that were never delivered and “ghost” contract employees who did not work. The scheme involved Acar approving falsified bills and splitting the money with vendors including Bansal, who submitted them, court documents alleged.

The FBI worked with another employee in the city’s technology office, who was in on the scheme and secretly recorded conversations with Acar and Bansal as part of the investigation.

Thanks for clarifying Danish. Not feeling picked on or singled out a bit (and I don’t usually whine or wince when that happens anyways). Now, I don’t usually get judgemental but neither do I walk around singing kumbaya while viewing the world through rose-colored glasses. Experience in life allows me to make quicker judgements. So I’m saying it flat out. If the young CTO ran an office that his second man (Acar) and an outside contractor (Bansal) with THAT much in DC contracts are guilty of corruption then Kundra either was part of the corruption or is entirely incompetent.

Remember I said I have experience working in the corrupt DC mess. Take a peek through these spectacles as this unfolds:

If we had to have a Chicago crook as president, why couldn’t it have been a gangster. Al Capone ran a business and was a capitalist.

This scandal will reach up to the top of the ladder because some rightwing blog says its so! The hardright is so desperate to tear Obama down that they don’t need the truth or hard evidence. They create their evidence and then try to wrap a case around it. People have seen thru “junk reporting”, its why the gop is in the wilderness. Just throw everything real or unreal up against the wall and hope something will stick to Obama, in the meantime Obama trys to fix the mess you Bushies left him. How about bring up his birth certificate again? Or the Muslim thing? Oh, thats right, those were laughable.

When did President Obama bump his head on the door sill of Marine 1? Examining his actions from that time should provide us an explanation for his actions.

Also, his new helicopter was equipped with teleprompters that would have told him to duck and a larger opening to prevent this from happening again.

Another serious example of President Obama’s body language that says more than words. When deplanning from any of his aircraft, he has to be reminded to salute the military security persons. However, after giving a weak salute he begins moving his arms (from the ground upwards with palms up) as he moves toward his waiting masses. You draw your conclusions as to the meanings and thoughts that President Obama is trying to send.
