Obama: Actually, the economy’s not as bad as you think
posted at 8:02 pm on March 12, 2009 by Allahpundit
I assume this is his way of saying that it won’t be quite as bad as the Great Depression, just almost as bad. Hope, for a Change:
Richard Parsons, chairman of beleaguered Citigroup Inc., asked if Obama could offer some help in a national battle “between confidence and fear.”
“A smidgen of good news and suddenly everything is doing great. A little bit of bad news and ooohh , we’re down on the dumps,” Obama said. “And I am obviously an object of this constantly varying assessment. I am the object in chief of this varying assessment.”
“I don’t think things are ever as good as they say, or ever as bad as they say,” Obama added. “Things two years ago were not as good as we thought because there were a lot of underlying weaknesses in the economy. They’re not as bad as we think they are now.”
“And my long-term projections are highly optimistic, if we take care of some of these long-term structural problems.”
Do we get to remind him that he said this the next time he asks for a trillion dollars in spending or is this, like his campaign promise about rejecting signing statements, just more crap that we’re not supposed to take seriously? Exit question: The One says things aren’t as bad as they seem, Specter says they’re even worse than they seem. I don’t trust either of them. Who’s right?

Day care workers are more cabinet material, when you’re looking for presidents you should tend more to a “community organizer”.

I thought his wording in this was kind of clumsy, nonsensical and repetitive, not to mention patronizing and snarky with his A little bit of bad news and ooohh , we’re down on the dumps.

How’s his guarantee to catch bin Laden in “the hills between Afghanistan and Pakistan” coming along? Some of those “hills” are 20,000 feet tall.
Of course, he also told us there are 47 states in the US. My bad.

Good heavens, what a clown you are. This is a joke, right? You can’t really believe the idiocy you spew.
Obama is in over his head like a sea-snail facing a 10-foot North Oahu wave. It’s disastrous that this guy has any level of policy control over this nation’s economy, which he has no prayer of understanding.
Edouard on March 12, 2009 at 8:43 PM
They are profitable if you ignore all the money they’ve lost–so it is “ex of this”, “ex of that”. Somewhat like a gambler saying he is “up” by looking at a subset of his bets.
The good news, though is that the common stocks of the banks are taking off on the news demonstrates how much has been squeezed out of their prices. Citi is up about 70% this week–all the way to $1.67. Now if they can go up 10x some investors can get their money back.
Citi is like a coma patient moving a finger. It isn’t much but it’s better than dead.

I find your comments kind of strange. Obama’s not injecting optimism here. His statement is oddly worded and repetitious and he snarks at people. The contradiction between this and things he’s said the past few weeks are laughable.
I don’t know who’s pretending the last eight years have been an unalloyed example of principles in practice. The web on the right has certainly criticized Bush in their disagreements with him. I also think much of the R party is well aware that they’ve been punished.

Glad to see the market headed towards 7000 again, hope it continues to go up for the sake of all those out there(me included)who waited so long they had no choice but to tough it out. Doesn’t change the basic flaws in this recovery plan though. And.. I suspect, but hope not, that the market will still be subject to extremes. Starting to read here and there that those companies that can afford it are moving out. The list keeps slowly growing. Reading that in 2011 the death tax will settle in at 45%–that is about as discouraging as it gets for owners of small and medium businesses. These are trickles that will probably turn into floods in the next 3 years. This man is a kind of economic and social slow acting poison.

Ack. Drudge has such a great headline…
What exactly has he campaigned on that he hasn’t reneged on? All I can see is a very long string of broken campaign promises, with a few new surprises (like this which he did not campaign on).
GITMO doesn’t count unless (God forbid) he actually does shut it down in a year, no excuses. Pulling out of Iraq in 19 months doesn’t count because that’s a result of the Surge, not anything Barack has done. The “tax cut for 95% of Americans” doesn’t count either because it’s not a tax cut, it’s a change in the withholding tables which means one could owe taxes on it next year, and Barry failed to inform us during the campaign that this “tax cut” was to help pay for his insane global warming tax.

I agree, build the roads and defend the coasts. Universities have plenty of dough, and their faculties are undermining our country as it is. Younger-age education is a local issue. Besides, more money isn’t the answer. I tutored in an inner-city middle school, and the problems lie with the parents and the kids. The most important Obama could do for education is hold an assembly at every inner-city school and tell the kids that learning as much as possible is essential to a better life and that doing well isn’t “a white thing”–it should be a black thing too.
Health care? Most of the expense is in HMO bureaucracy. Eliminate the income tax exclusion for employer-provided health insurance. An individual market will meet the demand. Competition will drive the prices down. McCain proposed a corresponding health care credit. It would improve portability. But government would not be controlling the agenda.

jeanie,
If you decide you want to try a link, cut and paste the info here or write whatever you want to say. I typed in “URL” in the next paragraph.
Then copy the URL at the top of the page to which to you’re linking.
Come back here to the comment box and put your cursor in front of the phrase or word you want to highlight as the link. I clicked in front of “URL” and put my cursor next to the “U”.
Next click on “link” at the top of the comment box. A box pops up telling you to enter the URL. Paste it right over the http stub that’s already there and then click OK.
I found a Wiki page and used this URL to use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Locator
The link box will now have a slash in front of the work link. That tells you that you’ll need to close the link. To do that, go to the end of the phrase you want to highlight and put your cursor there. I put it after the “L” in “URL”. Then click on the /link box and it will be finished. You can use preview to see if the link works, by right clicking the link and selecting open in new tab.
I hope that’s a little clearer than mud!
