DNC already starting to attack Sanford ahead of 2012

posted at 7:21 pm on March 12, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not just the DNC, either. In the span of one day, his decision to turn down part of the stimulus funds earned him criticism from the national organization, the Democratic Governors Association, and even James Clyburn, deploying one of his patented race-baiting denunciations. All for a guy who’s barred by term limits from running for governor again next year.

The One’s honeymoon is ending and the stimulus is starting to stink, with those who opposed it in the name of fiscal responsibility the obvious political beneficiaries. They’re nervous.

The DNC sent this note to South Carolina reporters this morning:

The reviews are in, and South Carolinians from both parties are rejecting Governor Mark Sanford’s decision to play politics with $700 million in federal job creation and economic recovery funds. On the same day the Washington Post is running a front-page story on the economic crisis in South Carolina, a bipartisan mix of South Carolina leaders are criticizing Gov. Sanford’s decision to put his personal political ambitions ahead of the people of South Carolina by threatening to reject economic recovery funds that will create or retain jobs, improve education, and complete infrastructure projects throughout South Carolina. As one local paper reports, “South Carolina’s Republican-controlled General Assembly is poised to rebuff Sanford and seek the stimulus money on its own.”

“Mark Sanford is putting his personal ambition ahead of the people of South Carolina by cow-towing to the Rush Limbaugh-led, obstructionist wing of the Republican Party,” said Democratic National Committee Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. “Now is not the time to politicize these practical steps to create jobs in South Carolina and across the country. Governor Sanford should stop playing politics and work with leaders from both parties who want to use the economic recovery funds to help create jobs, fix our schools, reform our health care system, make America energy independent, and lay the foundation for long-term growth in the 21st Century.”

He wants to use a quarter of South Carolina’s stimulus money to pay down the state’s debt and is seeking a waiver from Obama to do so. Exit question: A slam dunk VP choice for 2012, assuming he’s not nominated for president? The GOP will be looking to prove it’s not a regional party by having someone from outside the south top the ticket, so Sanford would provide geographic balance at the bottom. He’s young, he’s got a solid record on ethics (he kept his promise not to run for more than three terms in the House), and he’s a Christian who proved himself willing to stand up for separation of church and state by not endorsing the SC license plates with crosses on them. Toss in his adamant opposition to new spending and a public nauseated by endless bailouts should find him much to their liking circa 2011. I’ll repeat what I asked you the other day: Romney/Sanford?

Dick Gregory, 76, world famous activist, author, lecturer and comedian, appeared on the radio and television shows of Don Imus … this morning and made an historic announcement in connection with what he called “the inexcusable crisis of humanity in connection with the tragic state of the this country’s economy as a result of the past eight years of greed, arrogance and fear-mongering,” Gregory said.

Yep he won’t eat till it’s fixed.

We really need to counter this with our own form. Maybe AP can start the conference call.

Did anyone catch Pawlenty on some show or other(can’t recall exactly, sorry)describing all the strings and hoop jumping connected with the stimulus money? After listening to him, I don’t blame anyone who turns it down. My general, over all impression was that it could only be used in ways that supported o’s agenda, though Pawlenty did not say this.

I called that one a long time ago. Linking Obama to Mugabe is not going to do anything but give Dems live ammo with which they will accuse all Republicans of being a bunch of bigots.

Those of you who choose to call Obama Ogabe not only disrespect the office you do your party a disservice. Obama is a left-winger for sure. But America is not Zimbabwe — not by far. Show some creativity by basing your arguments in reality tenuously-racially-tinged, tired puns.

Johnson on March 12, 2009 at 7:43 PM

Sarah Palin is a wonderful woman and I believe she can be the first female POTUS, but I don’t believe 2012 is her time. She’d be better off with another term as governor then have a run at the office.

Or if she doesn’t run for governor, strategically she would be better off retiring from politics for awhile and help built the conservative brand name by becoming an Oprah like spokeswoman.

If the RNC was really interested in getting the conservative message and vision of America to seep into the collective mindset of the moderate middle they have to start seriously looking into promoting a woman to the level of someone who has the popularity and daily podium like an Oprah Winfrey or a show like The View. And the only woman who could do it is Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has so much star power that politics might not be the best use of her abilities right now. What the GOP needs most is help in rebranding what conservatives stand for. Sarah would be terrific doing this very necessary job.

sheryl on March 12, 2009 at 7:45 PM

Who cares what freakin part of the country he’s from? Can we please quit worrying about such dopey issues. He’s got conservative principles, knows his stuff, and is the most fiscally conservative governor in the country. Would make a great candidate in 12.

therightwinger on March 12, 2009 at 7:46 PM

technopeasant on March 12, 2009 at 7:36 PM

I’m thinking that Sarah will not run in 2012. If she does not, I think she will have made the right decision. It’s too soon after the terrible treatment she got at the hands of the left. Too many who will recall and it may predjudice them against her however unfairly. Think she would be wise to wait–she’s young enough to do that and will be more seasoned and credible if she does–making it hard for the left to tear her down.

ousoonerfan15 on March 12, 2009 at 7:49 PM

Hum?

Can anyone tell me of single accomplishment that Sanford can claim?

Just one.

The last I heard, his state was so broke he had to “borrow” money from the Feds just to pay unemployment. Sanford waited until the very last possible second to request the funds. His reason for holding off until the last minute????
Apparently he wanted an audit done. Of course, it was an audit of the people that he employed.

So the unemployed people in his state were held hostage while he played games with the people that work for him in his own department.

Ethics reform?

Sanford said he could not get anything done as far as ethics reform is concerned because there were too many entrenched good ole boys in the legislature.

Now would we have tolerated this response from Palin or Jindal? Both of them managed to get ethics reform passed in their first year.

So really, name a single accomplishment of Sanford?

I don’t know if I might have missed the sarcasm that may have been intended here, or perhaps it is inherent in the contradictory nature of these 2 disparate statements, but why do we have to make sure our candidates can win a beauty contest before we get behind them? Sure there is always a chance Sarah might wait, but with her PAC SarahPAC zooming right along raising massive amounts of money originally slated for the RNC but because of Steele and the poor performance of the GOP members in Congress now being diverted to Sarah’s coffers there is a much better chance Sarah will go in 2012.

All you have to is read the various threads on Hot Air, Free Republic, Townhall.com, conservatives4palin.com etc that many conservatives are refusing to donate to the RNC now because of what Steele said about Rush Limbaugh, the 3 RINO’s who voted for the stimulus bill and the lackluster performance of the GOP in Congress and then all this was confirmed when Rush Limbaugh went on a rant against what Steele said about him on the DL Hughley show and mentioned in his rant that people are mailing back requests for money back to the RNC and hanging up on RNC telemarketers requesting funds and telling anybody in the know in the RNC that they will be only giving to SarahPAC in the foreseeable future.

jeanie, when I am talking about a diversion of funds, what I am saying that thousands and maybe tens of thousands of conservatives and Republicans have decided not to send any more money to the RNC and DIVERT what they would have given to the RNC to SarahPAC.

To be honest if you are a RINO, with all due respect, you will not be happy. But if you are a Reagan conservative and believe in life. liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, fiscal responsibility and pro-life and you want to make gains in or take back Congress you will like what you see from SarahPAC: the mission statement of SarahPAC is to elect to office like-minded conservatives.

In April SarahPAC will announce its 1st quarter numbers. We all will know then what kind of force Sarah Palin will be on the American national landscape.

But what I have said on other threads for those who are looking for a 3rd party you have somewhere now to deposit your money-at SarahPAC.

I think it is effective, which is why the Dems keep saying it. Over and over. Without any coordinated or effective Republican response. We’re getting killed on this. Not necessarily the relevant govs in their states, but as a national message this is effectively defusing our message.

This is what I found at Infoplease:

In agriculture, tobacco and soybeans now rival cotton as South Carolina’s chief crops. Broiler chickens and cattle are economically important, and peanuts, pecans, sweet potatoes, and peaches are grown in abundance. Fishing is a major commercial enterprise; the chief catches are blue crabs and shrimp. Military bases and nuclear facilities are important to the economy, and the tourist industry today ranks as the state’s chief source of income.

South Carolina’s manufacturing also relies on automobiles as a major sector.

Just my speculation, but the things I highlighted are all areas affected by either the administration’s planned or realized policies and the economy.

techno, I have always supported giving to pacs and individual candidates over the National committees. Steele needs to get off the TV and do his job fundraising and recruiting candidates from the local level on up. In some ways I like a more behind the scenes operator like Duncan was. I don’t blame the last two cycles on him, they were just part of the usual political cycles.

John Kasich-RNC Chair

Knucklehead on March 12, 2009 at 8:46 PM

I looked up his bio — he doesn’t seem to have any executive experience. I’m not sure that he’s the best fit for the RNC job.

I still think Romney would be an interesting choice to chair the RNC for a couple of years.

He also stared down the Republicans in the SC legislature re: illegals. He won. SC won. Illegals lost.

SouthernGent on March 12, 2009 at 8:53 PM

Yep he won’t eat till it’s fixed.

Thanks, I am suspecting that the tourism industry has been hit hard with the downturn afterall golf excursions can be expensive.

No way they’ll limit themselves to just personal attack this time. No part of Socialism can EVER be optional — that’s the whole point of the philosophy.

logis on March 12, 2009 at 8:47 PM

The personal attacks are effective enough, even with Republican voters. Look how the MSM defined Palin. It will happen again.

I agree, Romney would definitely not be stumbling around wondering what to do, he would turn it into a lean effective operation.

So really, name a single accomplishment of Sanford?

kcarpenter on March 12, 2009 at 7:49 PM

I am just now reading up on him, but I did just check and found that he was one of only three governors to receive an “A” rating from the CATO Institute, so I gather he is a fiscal conservative. (I think Sarah has not been in long enough to have received a grade. My recollection is that Huck got a “D” the last time they graded him.)

Sanford is no doubt a very good man and would be a good candidate. But I can tell you a couple of his most important accomplishments for this purpose: 1. He hasn’t been caricatured by late night comedians. Yet. 2. He hasn’t been interviewed by hostile “journalists” under the spotlight.

ddrintn on March 12, 2009 at 9:04 PM

Amend that thing about Palin. CATO doesn’t include Alaska in the comparisons:

Alaska was excluded because of peculiarities
in that state’s budget that make interstate
comparisons problematic. between 2003
and 2008.

Too bad.

One thing stuck out on his “wiki” page:

He often would be one of two members of Congress, along with Ron Paul, voting against bills that otherwise got unanimous support.[citation needed] For example, he voted against a bill that preserved sites linked to the Underground Railroad.

Well, maybe that’s two things, actually since I’m not a Ron Paul fan.

I guess that the DNC will say he’s a racist.

Sandford looks a little like Prince Charles.
