Video: Murkowski tells AK legislature she’ll oppose Card Check

The Democrats took a political risk this week by bringing Card Check legislation to the floor of both chambers of Congress. They should have enough votes in the House to pass the bill, so the real battle will take place in the Senate. Unfortunately, at least thus far, the gamble has backfired. One Democrat has publicly gone against it in its current form (Ben Nelson), and three others are wavering (Mary Landrieu, Blanche Lincoln, Mark Pryor).

Harry Reid thought he could pick up a few Republicans to get past a cloture vote, but Arlen Specter has heard Pat Toomey’s footsteps and has begun backpedaling. Rumor had it that Democrats tried pushing Lisa Murkowski too, but as this video of Murkowski in the Alaska legislature shows, they’re probably barking up the wrong tree:

The idea of flipping Murkowski is a little odd, anyway. While Specter voted for Card Check in 2007 — when it had no chance of becoming law — Murkowski helped sustain the filibuster against it. For that matter, so did Susan Collins, one of the other likely flippers, and she and Olympia Snowe have already announced their opposition this time around.

Reid, it appears, has miscalculated. Murkowski won’t get budged.

Update: One thing to watch is the “in its current form” talk.  Everyone who has come out in opposition recently has said this; Murkowski says it in this clip.  More than likely, a bill that strips out the actual card-check certification and the more onerous parts of the arbitration requirements.  What will come out of Congress will wind up looking more like incremental change on the timing of organizing elections, and that’s probably all.  They won’t even get that much if Reid keeps pushing this version of Card Check so publicly.

It’s Sexist!!

They probably thought they could buy her vote. Which, if the price is right, is not a bad bet.

myrenovations on March 11, 2009 at 5:26 PM

I over heard Harry Reid saying to Murkowski, while rubbing his thumb against his index and middle fingers, “Stimulus two is on the waaaaay.”

WashJeff on March 11, 2009 at 5:27 PM

In one of the greatest ironies ever, it’ll pass with a secret vote.

lorien1973 on March 11, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Give Murkowski a big enough Pork necklace, she’ll put her head in the noose. This might be her “Read my lips” moment.

portlandon on March 11, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Or more likely, it’ll pass with everything except the most onerous parts, which will then get added later piecemeal. Either way. It’s gonna happen. Don’t kid yourself.

lorien1973 on March 11, 2009 at 5:29 PM

Lisa Murkowski knows there is an elephant in the room anywhere she goes. Its name is Sarah Palin. Lisa knows that if she takes stands which the majority of conservatives in Alaska oppose that Sarah may seize upon that to take her out in a primary in 2010, as she took her father out in 2006.

For Lisa, supporting Card Check would have been a bridge too far.

technopeasant on March 11, 2009 at 5:29 PM

Didn’t she already get some pork?

joey24007 on March 11, 2009 at 5:31 PM

Perhaps we can start a new Minute Man project, where, instead of protecting the borders, we protect non-union workers and their families from union thugs?

myrenovations on March 11, 2009 at 5:31 PM

Murkowski needs to listen to Palin’s footsteps also. Palin wouldn’t run against her unless she really pisses of AK. Murkowski better start running more conservative or she will get primaried by someone like Palin who has no problem challanging a vulnerable Republican.

Conan on March 11, 2009 at 5:34 PM

I agree with others that Murkowski is a pork whore but she will go for pork in a less contraversial bill.

Card check won’t go out of the AK memory and getting pork in this bill would be too obvious a sellout.

Conan on March 11, 2009 at 5:37 PM

Ed,

Did you really say,“Arlen Specter has heard Pat Toomey’s footprints”?

Don’t you mean footsteps?

OBQuiet on March 11, 2009 at 5:42 PM

bbbbut it’s called the Employee Free Choice Act. And why would anyone want to be against freedom and choice? Surely this woman is a fascist.

not many in Alaska know of or what card check is about.

upinak on March 11, 2009 at 5:44 PM

I thought she kamikazed herself on a ski slope in Alaska….. perhaps while going through the medical procedures she got an epiphany regarding socialistic policies….. nah… wishful thinking, I’m sure.

MNDavenotPC on March 11, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Yesterday Murkowski was one of eight Republicans who vited for the Omnibus Spending Bill.

It appears Specter is working for the title of the ultimate RINO. In fact, there’s talk he might jump to the Dems. I’m sure glad Bush and Santorum threw all their support and funding behind Arlen in the 2004 GOP primary/sarc.

Ed Morrissey on March 11, 2009 at 5:46 PM

Maybe Specter has been feeling Toomey’s footprints? Hearing them would be a difficult prospect…

Conan on March 11, 2009 at 5:37 PM

The quid pro quo doesn’t always happen within the same bill. My guess is that Stimulus Two will be part of the reward.

myrenovations on March 11, 2009 at 5:47 PM

This is good news. Card check must be stopped.

My wife’s company, a domestic manufacturer, recently steered new business to one of their overseas facilities, business that should have been handled in the US. That new business would have meant roughly 2,500 new full-time employees, but management is scared of what’s coming, particularly Card Check, so the work will be done in Asia instead. They didn’t want to spend millions on startup costs only to have to spend it again to move the work offshore next year.

Hey Obongo, even the threat of Card Check is costing Americans good jobs with top-notch benefits. In your estimates, please subtract 2,500 from the number of jobs you intend to create.

Big deal. Obama created 25 jobs last week.

25 public employee union jobs.

Two RINO votes in a row would not have stood her in good stead with the ‘folks’ back home.

I have this image of Sarah in the helicopter culling the RINO’s like Murkowski.

WashJeff on March 11, 2009 at 5:56 PM

I don’t know how anyone can vote for it. It is a vote for corruption through intimidation.

Daughter is like her father…. Toast.

suzyk on March 11, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Can we have ID CHECK at the ballot booth?!!?!?

SouthernGent on March 11, 2009 at 5:58 PM

I should have said – she is a “porker” and she’s in trouble now after the signing today. Obviously, she is against this because she’s worried and she should be.

Murkowski wants to be the next Ted Stevens

Ed Morrissey on March 11, 2009 at 5:46 PM

Actually I kind of like the way Capt. Ed said it. Hearing footprints brings a creepy factor to the issue, and Specter needs to be creeped out.

If Specter can hear the footprints of the ghost that just brushed by, instead of the footsteps of the constituents that put him in office, then he is spooked.

Yoop on March 11, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Reid is an idiot. He’s evidently caught “Pelosi fever”, but forgets he doesn’t have the voting base she does.

The unions are not going to be happy with a watered down version, especially one deleting the secret ballot and enforced government arbitration.

GarandFan on March 11, 2009 at 6:09 PM

What about the provisions that will override states’ right-to-work laws?

Update: One thing to watch is the “in its current form” talk.

Ding. Ding. Ding.

This is an handy chart which compares current and proposed rules, courtesy of Herman Cain. Pay special attention to rule #7, which Cain elaborates further on here:

Currently, the employees vote directly twice, one of which is the secret ballot, and a third time through their bargaining representatives. Under the proposed rules, the employees would sign a card and then they are totally out of the process from that point on

Unions don’t have much influence in Alaska and Lisa Murkowski doesn’t need their support.

She’s being polite in front of the Alaska Legislature which has a fair number of Democrat members but she’ll never vote for card check. Never.

JimAK on March 11, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Simple answer:

The employee Free Choice Act is an Orwellian way to refer to something I find to be un-American and opposed to the concept of Individual Liberty. I do not support it in its current form and I will not support it in any form.

American private enterprise has the right, and under my watch, will always have the right, to make it own operating decisions in regards to unionized labor. We, the Government of the People and by the People, will not infringe upon that right by pandering to special interest groups such as Unions.

Montana on March 11, 2009 at 8:34 PM

Good for her. I hope they’re running a tight ship up there in Alaska.
