The obligatory “Democratic poll puts Limbaugh’s net favorables at -27″ post

posted at 8:59 pm on March 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

C’mon, I had to post it. Three things I can’t resist: The iPhone, KP, and the prospect of an easy 200-comment thread. Don’t hate me for being weak.

Follow the link for the major data points in graph form, and note how slanted the question near the end about Huntsman and Limbaugh is. Framing the latter’s goal as “stamping out” moderates rather than, say, moving away from them is clearly designed to make respondents recoil. I’ll credit James “I certainly hope he doesn’t succeed” Carville for coming up with that one.

In fairness, their data’s not wildly different from Gallup’s poll on Limbaugh taken last month. This bit’s interesting, too:

To my surprise, more self-identified Republicans and conservatives think Rush has too much influence than too little. Safe to say that that puts righty blog readers to the right of even most “conservatives,” or do people here agree that Rush has more pull than he should?

For comparison purposes, Keith Olbermann netted a -5 in favorables among the six people who have heard of him. Check the “Target Crosstabs” at the link for the demographic breakdown. Exit question: How much of Rush’s favorables are based on what he actually says and how much are based on the media selectively soundbiting the most incendiary bits for public consumption?

Blowback

You keep wanting to blame him instead of lacklustered, spineless elected politicians.

I mostly blame spineless elected politicians. But Rush isn’t helping as much as he would if he were to tone down the ego & the physical-feature-based name-calling such as Forehead or Nostrilitis.

It will be curious to see if a poll like this movesif Rush’s audience has grown due to the dust-up. I would assume at > 80% of people survey do not listen to Rush even once per week. If you listen to his show, you know when he is joking or being sarcastic (which you cannot tell when the MSM sound-bites him).

WashJeff on March 11, 2009 at 9:53 PM

What percentage of the people who answered this poll have ever even listened to Rush’s show?

Watcher on March 11, 2009 at 9:46 PM

There you go. If anyone wanted an honest poll that would be the first question.
Of course, people like our trolls would answer “all the time” and then still say they hate him.

Yes, Allah, 90% of the results are based on selective media regurgitation. The BSM tells their audience what to think, then polls them to see how well the message has been absorbed.

People like Rush and Ann Coulter serve a real purpose in the conservative movement. The republican party is another thing altogher. But what they do is give voice to the people in the conservative movement who have some GOD D@MN BA!!s. I’m so sick and tired of the GOP trying to play by Markus of Queensbury rules while the stinking Dems pound the crap out of them with the worst hyperbole, outright election fraud and evil scheming all day long! Look at the White house organizing and launching a hate campaign against a private citizen who happens to disagree with them. If that doesn’t give you cause for pause, you’re forgetting Nixon. I thought that whole episode pretty much established that we can’t have the White House using the CIA and such underhanded tactics to destroy their opponents. What??? Oh, I’m sorry, that only applies to Reps. Dems can do whatever they want because nobody expects them to have any character. Laugh if you want, but it’s true and they milk it for all its worth.

Bikerken on March 11, 2009 at 10:00 PM

It is just so peculiar how Rush’s detractors go on about his “invective” speech.

His “mean spiritedness.”

His “anger.”

I don’t know ’bout some of y’all, but I’ve been listening to Rush for 12 years (since I was 9), and I don’t see the same “mean spiritedness” that his detractors see.

I hear laughter, friendliness, and mocking humor. No angry outbursts. No insane tirades of an unstable individual.

The man is incredible well-balanced, and really lets the BS slide off his shoulders.

Rush is valuable in that he can help mobilize the base- 20+ million listeners isn’t something to scoff at.

That he has net negative approval ratings (no doubt influenced by the popular media) is unfortunate, but not terribly important. How many people decide not to vote for a Republican candidate because they don’t like Rush Limbaugh? I’m guessing very, very few. As in almost none.

But feel free to focus on Rush, Obamaites. Don’t worry about the little stuff like trying to fill a cabinet post with someone who isn’t a tax cheat or in the pocket of China and Saudi Arabia.

Hollowpoint on March 11, 2009 at 10:13 PM

I didn’t remember his name, but I do remember seeing a story on him on 60 minutes. I thought it was a good story, but that’s irrelevant. Wiki is a heavily left slanted source of information. The stories are everywhere just recently about how google, another left leaning source of information, and Wiki, are scrubbing some threads of information about Obama. Why is that? You can wiki evil stories of conservatives all day long and then find out that Karl Marx was an angel. Wiki is opinion and it is heavily biased. So much so that its recent drop in credibility has caused them to take a different stance on who is editing their pages. They are changing their rules and format because they have found out that everyone cannot write their own encyclopedia and be honest about it. It was a REALLY dumb idea embraced by people who think the whole world is grey.

There is a backfire danger in the dems going after Rush, if they stir up enough interest that causes more people to listen to him, he will convert many of them. His show, whether you like his politics or not, is extremely entertaining. And he is one of the few who will actually get down and discuss the nuts and bolts of what legislation is coming up. How many other real sources do you hear that will break down the real issues in an upcoming bill and actually TELL YOU WHAT IS IN IT? My guess, very few. The major networks, be serious! Priss Matthews, you won’t hear one word of the ugly stuff.

Rush is a source of information and political debate that is unrivaled in this country. If you ever listen to any of the Air America failures, all they do is whine and talk about their feelings and why legislation should be passed because everyone doesn’t have everything and this will help us get there. God I HATE LIBS!

I’m partial to “Skeletor”, though I think that originated on this site, rather from Limbaugh (somehow, I doubt he ever watched He-Man).

The poll regarding Rush is useless; most people who I run into that talk about him have only ever heard the stuff they take out of context and repeat endlessly without any pertinent info. For example, my boss (who is very left leaning, but of course thinks he is ‘moderate’) dislikes Rush because he ‘made fun of people with parkinson’s disease’, which of course was patently false. I pointed out that his criticism was against liberals fronting people who have absolute moral authority so as to shield their ideas from criticism. My boss of course couldn’t come back at that.

When people go on about how ‘full of himself’ he is, they don’t realize that he’s being humorous, and that a conservative is allowed to have a sense of humor.

James Carville and company are convinced that the Washington Republicans are so cowed that all it will take is a little nudge to pry them from free from the “evil Rush Limbaugh and his league of right-wing radio cohorts.Wrong again Jamesy! Along with growing Rush’s audience you have rallied conservatives and exposed millions of new listeners to the real Rush. Who, like most “former” liberals, after listening to Rush for any period of time will remove the blinders; promptly reject your lies and smears, and thank god they tuned in to him in first place.

James, RINOs might bend but true conservatives never will!

up until last year, I only heard about rush through the MSM, and I had a low opinion of him.

This last year I’ve been listening to him over my lunch hour, and my opinion turned 100% to where I have a high opinion of him.

“In early February, before Limbaugh had become the public face of the GOP, Sherman began making attempts to arrange a debate on Rush’s popular radio show, his office said. When Sherman got no response, he sent Rush a letter.

“If you had any confidence in your position, you would agree to my request to have me on your show–where I’m sure I could demonstrate the merits of my views,” he wrote.

“You are a coward,” he assessed. “Very truly yours, Brad Sherman.”

It’s on?

Why should Limbaugh take on small fry like Sherman? He’s called the ONE himself out.

I’m partial to “Skeletor”, though I think that originated on this site,

Viewtifulgare on March 11, 2009 at 10:42 PM

Carville can’t be Skeletor. That’s the nick name for Alan Colmes.

If Rush gave airtime to every piss-ant liberal with a chip on his shoulder, there wouldn’t be any time left on the show (of course, that’s what liberals want to accomplish with the fairness doctrine anyway). Plus, it would elevate this guy…Sherman, is it?…to a point of legitimacy of which I’m certain he is undeserving. Plus, as Rush says everytime he gets ‘called out’ on this, this guy already has plenty of media venues that will have him, and Rush IS THE BALANCE that the mainstream media will not give us otherwise. The fact is, Rush and the other ‘gods of radio’ take on liberal’s idiot ideas everyday, and some hosts already have liberals on to debate them. Rush’s format doesn’t go that way, and since he has become as popular as it is, there isn’t much reason to change that.

I don’t know, I always thought of Colmes sitting at the bar when the bartender says “Why the long face?”. Personally, I thought Colmes was an okay guy, if just wrong a lot.

either orr on March 11, 2009 at 11:18 PM

Parody genius, illustrating absurdity with absurdity and ALWAYS using their own words to do it. But you must pay careful attention.

Al Sharpton said, “Barack the Magic Negro.”
James Carville said, “I want the president to fail.”
Harry Reid said, “The WAR is lost.”
