Oh my: Public opposes second stimulus this year by two-to-one margin; Update: Will Collins et al. support it?
posted at 4:45 pm on March 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
It seems like just yesterday that I was wondering if The One had miscalculated by expecting a bailout-weary public to support more than one gargantuan stimulus bill. Oh right — it was yesterday.
Remember to emphasize confidence when you’re pitching this next one, Nancy.
Just 27% of voters nationwide favor passage of a second economic stimulus package. The latest Rasmussen Reports nationwide telephone survey found that 55% are opposed and 19% are not sure.
Despite the public opposition, 74% say it’s likely that Congress will try to pass another stimulus plan before the year is out. That figure includes 45% who say it’s Very Likely that Congress will do so…
Forty-three percent (43%) of Democrats favor a second stimulus package while 32% are opposed. Republicans oppose the concept by an 8-to-1 margin. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 59% are opposed to a second stimulus plan while 23% are in favor of it.
They don’t even have a majority of Democrats on board? Good lord. I’m not sure how seriously to take these results, actually: On the one hand, 63 percent told WaPo just two weeks ago that they expect another stimulus will be needed, and after all, we’ve been warned before that Rasmussen’s issue polls tend to skew towards the GOP position. On the other hand, 61 percent told the Journal last week that they’re more worried about the feds spending too much money than too little (up five points since December) and a Newsweek poll taken around the same time showed 52 percent agreeing that the first stimulus was either the right amount needed or that we shouldn’t have had a stimulus at all (40 percent thought it was merely a good start). Maybe now that the public’s had time to choke on The One’s mammoth $3.6 trillion budget and that $410 billion omnipork spending bill that passed yesterday, the tide has turned and the tap’s being turned off. Or maybe Cool Hand Luke will give another primetime address demanding $800 billion more or else the sun will explode and that’ll flip 15 percent back his way. Through Hopenchange, all things are possible.
Update: Does Obama have the votes to get this thing passed, assuming it even reaches the floor? Specter’s under enormous pressure to vote against it now that Toomey’s mounting a primary challenge. Collins and Snowe are safer bets, but if public opinion really is this sour, even they’ll think twice.

Silly pollsters. Don’t you know that “he won”? Polls mean nothing. The American people voted for CHANGE in November. And Obama and his merry Marxists are gonna give it to us!

Exactly. The American people fell for his BS for 2 years on the campaign trail and fell for his BS for 2 months already as well. There’s absolutely *no* reason for Obama and the Democrats to fear that the American public will react any differently now. All these silly polls are just a good excuse for Magic Tongue to come out and give a grand soothing speech to the nation to woo them to his point of view. The next day, polls will show the American public convinced and then by the end of the week, the merry Marxists in Congress will pass the legislation.
No worries!

It’s hard to argue against that logic. I am, myself, convinced that the economical downturn was aided by the continual screaming from the left during the end of Bush’s second term, rhetoric only I mean, regardless of policy.

I wonder what the results would be had the Porkulus actually put any money in the hands of citizens. Maybe if the first one actually addressed the economy there would be no need for one to actually stimulate the economy. Looks like not wasting the crisis has its downfalls, who knew?

Don’t worry, all it will take is one more “historic” speech followed by a week of the press gushing over how intelligent Obama is and the Democrats will be able to push through a trillion dollar stimulus* package.
*this in no one implies a stimulus to anything other than Democratic pet projects.

I think the $4 gas prices did it, for the most part. Trebling a basic commodity in such a short period of time could not have positive results.
Also the over-inflated housing prices.
Not to mention the fact that someone (or group) took $500 billion out of banks, almost overnight, which caused the panic in the first place. Why no investigation into that is simply astounding.

It seems apparent that Obama’s policies will lead to further economic trouble. There are no examples of these programs restoring prosperity.
Spirit of 1776 on March 11, 2009 at 4:56 PM
Bah. I disagree. Go back to 2006-2007 and I know you will find polls showing people believing that we were in a recession when we were clearly not.
I could care less what “people say”. These polls are put out there for the same reason they have always been put out there: to push people into believing things.
“Hmmm, I believe X. Oh wait, this poll says that 53% of people believe Y. Wow. That’s a lot. Well, I must be wrong, so I’ll start believing Y too, since 53% of people believe it. Y *must* be true if 53% of people believe it!”
It’s just a herd mentality. I care what informed and knowledgeable people have to say about the economy. Not 53% of ignorant idiots answering a poll.
Recall all those stupid polls asking people if they think we’re winning in Iraq. Who the hell cared what they thought? What mattered were the facts on the ground, not what a majority of ignoramuses polled thought.
Same thing applies here. Spare me the polls. Show me the opinions of those in the know so I can form an informed opinion on matters. These polls are just a way to make news in light of incompetent journalism and a way to try to make people think a certain way in a herd mentality.
Michael in MI on March 11, 2009 at 4:56 PM

I hope you’re correct. But this has been SOP for the Left and the Democrats since 2004. And I don’t see anyone having found a cure for BDS nor for Obama cult worship. In the face of facts and logic and reason, the Democrats have done nothing but gain more and more power.
Then again, after the elections of 2006 and 2008, I lost all faith in the American public. If we were classifying belief in the American people as we classify belief in God, I would consider myself now an Atheist. America is only as good as its people. As John Adams stated, our Constitution was made only for a good and moral people. I don’t believe America is made up of a majority of those people anymore. Therefor, I don’t believe in America anymore. I believe in the idea of America, but not its people.
People go through times in their life where they lose their faith in God. Well, the last 4 years, I have lost my faith in the American people.
But again, I certainly hope you are correct.

I saw something on Fox this morning that stated each household has spent a little over $18,000 on the stimulus. I know I could use that much cash. My wife and I are lookng to buy a house. Imagine all the people who would go out and spend it right away. I seriously think if the government would have given that amount to the people it would have pulled us out of a recession quicker than what it is being used for now.
txaggie on March 11, 2009 at 5:02 PM
According to some tax preparer people I’ve spoken to, lots and lots of people are under a mistaken assumption that along with their usual tax refund this year, they are also getting something called a stimulus check from the just passed stimulus bill.
They, of course, are not. But people want some checks and the second stimulus will probably give them checks to keep them happy.

The Obama people know the sheep well. They know that the popularity of Stimulus is not the threat that any economic discomfort is to their political popularity. They will spend 1 million per job if they have to to rewrite the unemployment numbers down. Long term considerations are not needed for 2 reasons. They need support in the short term for the “Socialism on Steroids” plan and Second the hyperinflation or whatever happens donw the road just becomes a better excuse to make even more people dependent on Government thus accelerating the whole socialist mess. See Soviet Union to see how this increase in socialism goes hand in hand with economic troubles that need more socialism to fix.

My son recently got a long email from childhood friends attending college at Santa Barbara State. These kids were boasting to my son about the fact that Obama was going to come through with his promise by legalizing pot in California. Of coarse these kids (being kids) voted for Obama for that reason, they thought he’d legalize pot. My son made a bet with them, that it would never happen in their lifetime simply because my son knows what a huge cash cow medicinal marijuana is in California, as he did a study on this as a senior in HS in So. Cal… The State of California has a huge marijuana industry, well into the billions of revenue for the state each year. California is bankrupt, and is not about to give up on one of the only remaining cash cow’s they have remaining.
To think, thousands of kids voted for Obama because they believed he would legalize marijuana. What a guy!

Another point that makes them very squirmy is bailing out the bus drivers who bought $800,000 homes.
One reason Obama won was he was promising tax cuts, homes and all kinds of free lunches. A lot of people thought they were going to be getting mass handouts, so far they got pretty much squat. Rush is right about taking down O’s popularity, it’s not that tough to do.

Never mind the fact that the media will cover up and re-create reality for this guy until the end of the world. But do you think that our society has the will to let the Historical First Black President go down in history as a failure? I do not believe so, I think the majority, consciously or unconsciously will give him all the slack necessary to save him from that fate, because they believe the historical consequences of his failure are too big.
No matter how badly he botches it, there will not be a leader/writer/commentator who will feel safe calling him a failure because even if 90% of the population think he is a failure nobody will openly admit it outside of forums like this. I just do not see our society getting to the point where this is not taboo.
