“How dare you?” Fleischer and Matthews hammer each other over Bush, Iraq

posted at 6:52 pm on March 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

The pretext for this moldy talking-points rehash is today’s Politico piece on the efforts of Bush loyalists like Fleischer to rehabilitate Dubya’s legacy. Nothing here you haven’t heard several thousand times before on Hardball, but with Glenn Beck drubbing MSNBC even more than usual at 5 p.m., Matthews has to do something to goose the ratings. So here’s the inevitable showdown, which turns entertainingly nasty about four minutes in when Chris dumps on Bush’s counterterror legacy and Ari’s patience goes up in smoke. Twelve minutes of simmering hostility later, Matthews finally gets to deliver this summa on preemptive war on behalf of his pal “Barack”:

And I am glad that we no longer have an administration that uses that kind of argument… And the American people are happier, too. They are, I can assure you. We don’t like that thinking anymore in this country.

Given the predictable badgering and interruptions, Fleischer stays surprisingly cool and does a solid job parrying the thrust about advance intel on 9/11. Note the stagehands laughing at 8:10 when he demands to get a word in edgewise. Doesn’t he know which show he’s on?

Chris: Blank stare, sighs, long pause……

Chris is a tool!

74SeventeenSeventySix on March 11, 2009 at 8:21 PM

Is Chris Matthews speaking for himself, or for the handful of people that actually watch his show? I simply asking because three times as many people watch Fox, and if that’s any indicator, he’s speaking for less than a quarter of Americans.

Or…maybe he’s speaking for his dead tingle.

MadisonConservative on March 11, 2009 at 8:22 PM

And WOW. Chris Matthews is absolutely pathetic.

Truly pathetic. Even with Keefy Olbermann in the mix, Matthews is unbelievably unbearable.

Matthews is a disgusting perverse imitation of a man. I wish Zell Miller would have gotten his duel.

Ari clobbered Matthews.

And as others stated, Matthews never shuts up. Ari shut up Chrissy Tingle’s hole though.

Kudos to Fleischer !!!

Sooooo, when Barack Obama sends Hillary to the UN to argue that Iran has to be attacked because of WMD and ties to terror…Chris Matthews will? What? Argue about a 17month long rush to war?

This guy and his denial-based lemmings are in for a VERY rude awakening when Obama faces his first real foreign policy crisis.

scottm on March 11, 2009 at 8:37 PM

Gee, Bush has been out of office only 50 days and Chrissy wants to revisit the bad “old” days already?. You think maybe he wants to distract from Bambi being a total flop?

Chris Matthews thinks the world would be safer with more dictators pursuing nukes, if they don’t in fact already have them. His logic is these people just want nukes to have them, and they will keep one another busy terrorizing each other or maybe Israel. That is the stupidest argument I’ve ever heard.

If he thinks “America” agrees with him now, then we have too many stupid people in this country. Maybe we need another Republican administration, so these idiots can leave this country and go pass themselves off as Canadians.

chunderroad on March 11, 2009 at 8:56 PM

aikidoka on March 11, 2009 at 9:01 PM

Matthews can’t maintain a consistant point of view from one paragraph to the next.

First, because Bush didn’t lock down the country in response to a briefing that mentioned airplanes being used as weapons, 9/11 is his fault.

Then, the leftist psychobabble that our reacting to the widely held belief that Hussein had WMD was horrendous.

So what is it then? Which of the decisions should have gone the other way? There is no common thread or thought from one of their thoughts to the next except “attack the right.”

Wine_N_Dine on March 11, 2009 at 9:01 PM

Claypigeon on March 11, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Matthews, like almost every liberal I know, roots for Obama and attack Bush, with a fervent aggressiveness that goes beyond reason, or logic.

He clings to old, tired arguments (“Bush lied!”) ignoring inconvenient truths (Clinton believed there were WMD’s).

Most conservatives I know concede Bush’s failings (spending like a drunken sailor and illegal immigration). Ari is a good example of an intelligent conservative.

I believe this is EXACTLY what he meant when he said we need to stand up against the left’s abuse of the language.

Ari hammered him, didn’t let him get away with dishonest paraphrasing, and kept fighting his own fight, not responding to Matthews. Absolutely fabulous.

Laura on March 11, 2009 at 10:28 PM

Laura,

BINGO! He didn’t pull a Steele and accept the premise, he countered, and if you could deaden the left channel in stereo, you could hear him defend the president who took what was left behind by the previous president, and, after the country was sufficiently alarmed to fight back, defended our nation, castrated Al Quaida, and freed millions of Iraqis.

Ari refused to let his statements be shot through a prism of jism for Obama.

benrand on March 11, 2009 at 11:00 PM

Like Matthews, I’ve never understood this “safe since 9/11″ argument, especially since al Qaeda didn’t pop out of nowhere on that day. If the supposed top virtue is to “keep us safe”, then 9/11 represents an epic fail. I mean, bragging about how you kept us safe since the last time you didn’t… is pretty absurd. But apparently it resonates with some people.
ChenZhen

That’s a little like saying that the Israeli Jews’ cry of “Never again!” rings hollow because they had the “epic fail” of letting the Holocaust happen the first time around or that Dr. Jonas Salk shouldn’t brag about his vaccine because of the “epic fail” of allowing so many people to be felled by polio before he began his work in earnest. After all, polio didn’t pop out of nowhere. Your OODA loop is missing the first ‘O’.

The pretext for this moldy talking-points rehash is today’s Politico piece on the efforts of Bush loyalists like Fleischer to rehabilitate Dubya’s legacy.

And I bet Politico really knocked itself nearly out in those efforts to denigrate both Fleischer and Bush (AND “Bush loyalists”) while feigning some sort of reportage on just about anything they could patch into those points.

Politico nearly knocks itself out working the fence with both legs lying on the Leftist side.

Mathews is a complete piece of crap. That’s a harsh thing to say, but I mean it completely.

juanito on March 12, 2009 at 12:21 AM

In the same interview Matthews faults Bush for not acting on intelligence that said that there would be an attack in the U.S. and for acting on intelligence that said that Saddam was attempting to acquire yellow cake uranium.

Which is it? Should Bush listen to his intelligence experts or not?

What a tool.

Greg Toombs on March 12, 2009 at 12:47 AM

So, AP, you listened to this whole thing?

It really was entertaining. Skip ahead to 4:00 if you can’t stomach all of it.

Allahpundit on March 11, 2009 at 7:19 PM

Yes, it really was. It was even worth listening to Matthews moral posturing to see him answered by someone who doesn’t let him just keep talking over his guest.

Especially nice: when Matthews tried to turn the war into Iraq into the Bush administration believing that anyone we didn’t like was grounds for a war, and Fleischer nailed him with the question about whether we had gone to war with Libya, or with Syria. Matthews for a moment had that look on his face that said, “No way out of this one.”

Matthews is slimy. He invites Ari Fleischer on, then acts like Fleischer is on some sort of grand tour to rehabilitate the Bush administration’s reputation. Of course, in typical liberal projection fashion, it turns out that it’s Matthews who has the ulterior motive of attacking the Bush administration. Which is a transparent attempt to deflect attention from the fact that Obama’s honeymoon is ending faster than expected.

Because Obama is failing and the Democrat Congress is going down with his ship the “USS Socialist Loser”, the liberal media and the Democrats are starting to see big trouble ahead in 2010.
From now until the 2010 elections the entire theme of the liberal press and Democrats will be to try to show that Republicans (Conservatives) are worse than Democrats. As in, “If you think Democrats are inept and corrupt then just think what will happen with more (evil) Republicans in Congress”.
Hence the re-hashing and re-attacking of Bush, the attacking and trying to create a monster out of Limbaugh.
They will push the thought of Republicans and conservatives are worse than Obama and Democrats.
This will only increase as Obama continues to fumble and fail and the economy gets worse.
They will ignore the failure of Obama and try to say it would be worse with Republicans.

He was playing clips of the mathews interview of Ari and ccommenting on it. MSNBC is now devoid of content. They might as well make it the home shopping netwrok or show fishing shows. Sad

kangjie on March 12, 2009 at 9:03 AM

Ari thinks Saddam orchestrated 9/11. Hilarious.

The more Republicans who think Bush did a great job, the better. Because there’s more than enough people living in reality to assure another Democrat win in 2012.

Ari just ignores a direct question on the economy and re-spews the safe since 9/11 line, as if the struggling American people are only going to remember that about Bush.

You Republicans need to realize that your country is 40 40 20 split, with the 20 being undecided at election time. Those are the only people you need to worry about. You waste so much time preaching to the converted and your message to those other 20 is garbage and not going to change anybody’s mind. No wonder McCain got his face punched so bad in this election. But hey – keep doing what you’re doing – it suits the Dems just fine.

You gotta watch it just for the very end, where Canary Boy exhales audibly as if he was just pounded on by Mike Tyson.

The very end, best part.

benrand on March 12, 2009 at 6:55 AM

LOL! Yeah, I noticed that too. I’ll 2nd that, Best Part!

JohnnyD on March 12, 2009 at 9:46 AM

I only managed to watch a third of the video. God Bless Ari Fleischer. If I were Ari, I would have told this cretin where to go.

The more clips I see of Matthews, the more I wonder if he isn’t receiving compensation for the Obamunists. I mean he is wreaking the infinitesimally tiny bit or journalistic credibility he may still possess with both of the viewers he has left.

He is either being paid by the Obamunists, of they have promised him the job of Obamunism’s High Priest.

Matthews is a buffoon.

Dave….did you just crawl out of your mom’s basement and miss the last 50 or so days? get a clue, homey. now wipe the milk off your face and go back to sleep.

Chrissy’s ratings book is the worst. The shill basically has no viewers. Like the NYT, once you sell your credibility as a COUGH journalist, you have nothing. You’re just a guy with an opinion. Suck it Chrissy.

Please please please keep believing this.

Even the liberal bastion of MSNBC Thinks Obama is tanking:
GIVE MSNBC CREDIT: They haven’t disappeared this online poll, even though Obama isn’t doing very well.

Getting a failing grade at MSNBC is like getting a failing grade at the daily Kos.

OH…wait a second, that is happening to:

P.S.: The whole Begala-Carville coordinated campaign against Limbaugh seems misguided when Obama is supposed to be leading the nation out of crisis (see Warren Buffett’s comments, below). Quite apart from whether it’s a good idea to take one of your smarter opponents and build him up, the campaign seems petty, partisan and poll-driven–not designed to produce any kind of national pulling-together. If Begala weren’t around I’d suspect Chris Lehane of thinking it up.

President Obama’s clumsy, smirky staff is sinking him

First it was that chaotic pig rut of a stimulus package, which let House Democrats throw a thousand crazy kitchen sinks into what should have been a focused blueprint for economic recovery. Then it was the stunt of unnerving Wall Street by sending out a shrill duo of slick geeks (Timothy Geithner and Peter Orszag) as the administration’s weirdly adolescent spokesmen on economics. Who could ever have confidence in that sorry pair?

And then there was the fiasco of the ham-handed White House reception for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, which was evidently lacking the most basic elements of ceremony and protocol. Don’t they read the “Iliad” anymore in the Ivy League? Check that out for the all-important ritual of gift giving, which has cemented alliances around the world for 5,000 years.

And on the most important issue that Mr. 57 states and his friends Barney Frank,Chris Dodd,Maxine Waters and the other democrats that fought any regulation of Fannie/Freddie sub-prime corruption that helped get us in this mess,
Obama is getting failing grades(stock market down almost 30% since his election):

Obama, Geithner Get Low Grades From Economists

U.S. President Barack Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner received failing grades for their efforts to revive the economy from participants in the latest Wall Street Journal forecasting survey.

That’s a lot of activity, and a ton of money, but so far the reaction to the new administration’s programs has been decidedly negative. Investors, among others, have panned the plans;

This is just a distraction to sheep like Dave who stay on their knees in the Temple of Obama no matter how many promises he brakes, lies he tells, and idiotic moves he makes.

Just keep talking about Bush and Rush and nobody will pay attention to the amateur circus and the idiotic clowns that make up the Obama administration right genius.

I posted my opinion of the interview at the Hardball site on MSNBC found here: http://hardblogger.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/03/11/1832929.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage

Funny thing though, I posted a couple of hours ago and my comment still is not showing up, hmmmmmm…..

Here is the message I get:

BTW, I borrowed MB4′s list of libs talking points and sent them to Mr. Matthews.

I guess those space constraints are kicking in with 0 comments!!!!
