Flashback: Minutes before 9/11 attacks, Carville said he hoped Bush wouldn’t succeed

Even more enjoyable than that 2006 poll Patterico dug up showing 51 percent of Democrats hoping Bush would fail — two raging wars notwithstanding.
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, just minutes before learning of the terrorist attacks on America, Democratic strategist James Carville was hoping for President Bush to fail, telling a group of Washington reporters: “I certainly hope he doesn’t succeed.”…
Minutes later, as news of the terrorist attacks reached the hotel conference room where the Democrats were having breakfast with the reporters, Carville announced: “Disregard everything we just said! This changes everything!”
The press followed Carville’s orders, never reporting his or Greenberg’s desire for Bush to fail. The omission was understandable at first, as reporters were consumed with chronicling the new war on terror. But months and even years later, the mainstream media chose to never resurrect those controversial sentiments, voiced by the Democratic Party’s top strategists, that Bush should fail…
“The difference between Carville and his ilk and me is that I care about what happens to my country,” Limbaugh told Fox on Wednesday. “I am not saying what I say for political advantage. I oppose actions, such as Obama’s socialist agenda, that hurt my country.
Two potential points of distinction for the left here. One is that Carville changed his mind instantly once the country shifted to a crisis footing whereas Rush keeps hoping for failure even as the economy disintegrates. Is that really the point liberals have been making in attacking him, though — that it’s A-OK to root for the president to cock things up so long as nothing really important’s at stake? Watch those goalposts move! (Subsidiary question: Did Carville really instantly change his mind or, rather, did he instantly realize that it was no longer politically safe to wish aloud for the president’s failure?) The second point is the one Patterico hits on in this post, i.e. the difference between hoping Obama fails at implementing his agenda and hoping that his agenda fails after it’s implemented. Hard to tell from the tiny bit quoted in the Fox piece which was true in Carville’s case vis-a-vis Bush. Given that we were already more than seven months into his term at the time, it’s safe to say he wasn’t speaking wholly prospectively.
I wish I could promise you video when he’s asked about this, but since he’s a CNN contributor he probably won’t be asked about it. Quick, someone send up the bat signal for Jason Mattera.

The Dem’s held off on their attacks on W for at least 3 weeks…
phreshone on March 11, 2009 at 2:46 PM
The difference between these two events is that, on 9/11 we had a group of lowlife cowards from another land launching an attack on our nation, and after January 20, 2009 we have an elected president launching an attack on our nation.
Big difference.

He keeps hoping for failure of policies that he believes are going to make things worse. This is, for some, apparently a confusing concept.
(And to the usual suspects: If you want to argue that Carville was saying the same thing… why is that only a bad thing now?)

I have to say that if Carville and Henry Waxman were polygamists at some compund with say 20 wives, their spawn would form a new species that would not breed with humans. They would be the rat people, and they would live in caves, and their language would be unintelligible squeaking.

We’ll see how well Carville wears it. Maybe he won’t be asked about it on CNN but it’ll get some legs. Hey, Michael Steele, handle this right and you can make some major hay out of your previous blooper. We’ll also see if Newt has any seeds left.

Somebody needs to explain the difference between hoping that the Won’s policies fail before they are inacted and hoping that they fail after they are inacted. I hear this distinction a lot. I understand the first, but wouldn’t I be correct to say that the success of one socialist item on the agenda would lead to pushing another, and then another? Whereas failing before implementation might, just might, make the socialists in washington slow down their agenda. In light of this, I hope Obama fails in every socialist part of his agenda. Totally Fails, miserably fails. Please don’t ban me.
TimothyJ on March 11, 2009 at 2:56 PM
The economy is distintegrating because Obama is currently succeeding in getting his agenda through. If he were failing, the economy would be showing signs of life.

The image has always been on my mind and I wish it would surface again everytime that moron opens his piehole.

myrenovations on March 11, 2009 at 2:59 PM
No this shows the difference. Saying the policies are failing or doomed to fail is much different than hoping that the President fails. Though either side might really wish it, hoping for failure is just a stupid rhetorical move that takes you more steps back than forward. That is the point that Newt made on MTP. Rush knows better, he seems to want Republican minorities because it helps his business.

Rush clearly states ad nauseam that he wants Obama’s destructive, socialist policies to fail..knowing that Obama’s policies will end the USA as a capitalist country.
The economy is disintegrating AP BECAUSE of Obama’s reckless policies. AP not only misrepresents what Rush says but creates a ’straw man’ argument (economy disintegrates) that has NO RELATION to what Rush ever said.

The timing of what Rush said is important. When asked about his hope for the administration, Rush said he hoped he fails. He has, so far, succeeded and the country has suffered, at least economically. So far, Rush has been borne out. The timing is a point worth making.
Though, I well suspect that no one’s minds will be changed now. This issue has become one of pride and prejudice.
Spirit of 1776 on March 11, 2009 at 3:15 PM
We experienced 8 YEARS of Democrats not simply wanting Bush (and America in order to give “us” what “we” deserved) to fail, but those Democrats did everything imaginable and unimaginable in order to make Bush fail, and to make the US lose the wars being fought, in Iraq and against global Islamofascist terrorism. The Democrats did everything possible in order to defeat every good measure that Bush undertook. There is no forgetting their Bush Derangement Syndrome and their horrible political assassination of every conservative they came across at work.
The cherry Carville gloats atop Democrat Fascists.
maverick muse on March 11, 2009 at 3:17 PM
Carville only can support himself and Matlin when Republicans fail since it his profession to see that this happens. On 9/11 he was interested in keeping his job so he told his slaves to keep quiet.
mytralman on March 11, 2009 at 3:17 PM
The country was not failing because of Bush, though the Democrats persistently said it was. “Bush lied. People died!” This market nosedive that’s been happening since Obama won the election is a direct result from his failed leadership and his socialist agenda. Obama is using the crisis to enact policies Americans otherwise would not want. Hoping that Obama fails to enact his socialist vision means the whole country as we know it succeeds.

thebrokenrattle on March 11, 2009 at 3:24 PM
That is precisely my point. Rush said, I hope he fails before the policies were enacted. Having been enacted, as Cramer said, Obama has destroyed wealth in this county.
That’s why the timing matters. The argument R-wing pundits should be making is that Rush was right – look at the consequences! But they don’t consider the time and context when they were made. What Rush said should and could have been defended as a warning by those on the right. Socialism (or programs dependent on socialist doctrine) never equals prosperity.
I saw that; I’m afraid I don’t understand your point. Reid is a loser.
Spirit of 1776 on March 11, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Hello, it’s the same thing!
This would be akin to saying “I hope Hitler fails in implenting his agenda” but “I hope his agenda succeeds after its implemented”….
Either way, if it succeeds it is by default catastrophic, any way you look at it.
Norwegian on March 11, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Bingo. I’m simply baffled why the three stooges, and those who agree with them, simply *still* do not get it.
We have a patient (American economy) who is seriously ill. The Doctor (Obama) wants to do a major operation to completely reconstruct the inner workings of the patient’s body in order to ’save’ him. The patient has has this serious illness before and previous doctors have helped cure him by doing certain procedures. Yet, this doctor wants to ignore that and do something drastically different and more extreme, that will probably make things even worse and has been proven to fail in the past when tried on other patients.
Now, any logical thinking person would hope that the doctor fails in his attempt to perform such surgery and those urging for the old ways to cure the illness will succeed. But those such as Ace and AllahPundit and Patterico translate to mean that those wishing for the doctor to fail in performing that surgery are also wishing for the patient to die.
I seriously had no idea that Ace, AllahPundit and Patterico were that dense.

I keep getting this bizarre impression that somehow some people want to blame Rush’s hopes for Obama’s failure for the economy’s continuing downward spiral.
Suppose tomorrow (OK, Monday) Limbaugh apologizes and says, “Gosh, I hope what the President is doing — or not doing — will work!”
Anyone think that would make a bit of difference?
On the other hand, suppose Obama apologizes, and says, “Gosh, I’ve been making some really stupid decisions; maybe I ought to shelve some of this government-takeover agenda and focus on really fixing the banking and market issues.”
Think that would make a bit of difference?
Funny where our focus continues to be, though, isn’t it?

Obama has also chased wealth from this country. He has also looted the treasury for friends of the Democratic party, union bosses and Wall Street.
chunderroad on March 11, 2009 at 3:35 PM
One is that Carville changed his mind instantly once the country shifted to a crisis footing whereas Rush keeps hoping for failure even as the economy disintegrates.
You can’t compare Carville to Rush. Carville’s just your typical slimy political opportunist who has no standards. Rush is a radio host who is pretty consistent in what he believes. And it’s insane to suggest that the Democrats supported Bush’s war against (Islamic) terrorism. The Democrats’ support quickly evaporated once they identified an opportunity in Iraq to cut the President down to size.
I know some people on “our” side think we need to give this Limbaugh thing a rest because it’s “embarrassing” us. AP, Ace, so on. Thing is, they’re wrong. Instead of sniping at Limbaugh for stating his opposition to an economic policy which is, one way or the other, bad for the country, we should be supporting him with everything we have. If Rush’s words are taken out of context, then someone needs to be there to put them back in the right context. This “Oh, crap, the media hitting us really hard over this, we better back off” nonsense isn’t going to fly anymore.
Don’t you people get it? The media can distort ANYTHING a conservative says. Conceding ground to them is the worst thing we can do right now.
It’s my hope that Rush continues to hammer away at Obama, because Operation: Distract the Country With Rushbo will only be effective for a short time before people wise up.

chuderroad you’ve sparked my memory. Cramer also said that now is not the time for Obama to enact his Democrat/socialist wish list. Of course he didn’t say socialist because Cramer is a Democrat, but still… a Democrat saying that Democrats should put their Democrat agenda on hold until the economy is better is a big deal.
Although, the Democrats in power aren’t interested in fixing the economy. Now is the perfect time for them to put everything through in a panic. Of course given the fact that the markets are diving and more and more people are being let go, how in the world was all of this crap able to get through without major dissent? I mean the markets and businesses (and in turn the people being let go from those businesses) obviously knew it was horrible and destined to destroy the economy.

If Obamalosi’s intention was to cure the ailing economy and ensure the survival and the success of liberty in the world, then I would hope for him to succeed, even despite the almost certainty of failure.
What Rush is saying, and I agree with him, is that their intention is not to heal the economy or protect the free world. Their intention is to create a socialist “utopia” with all the features that go into that: a caste system, the politicization of all aspects of life (aka totalitarianism), the suppression of free speech and scientific debate, etc. Because that is their intention, I want them to fail.

Republicans swept into the majority and the White House after Clinton whammed unreasonable taxation on the middle class.
Republicans have since acknowledged that the resulting big tent GOP was compounded by immoderate RINOs who, to prove their likability, crossed the aisle to be “bipartisan” and no longer conservative individuals. Obviously that cost conservatism and advanced progressive American socialism.
It is the Democrat Party that makes extinct those it presumes to guard, the farming families, the skilled laborers. It is the Democrat Party celebrating their progress over the disappearing middle class. It is the Democrat Party that takes all and returns squat. It is the Democrat Party that tosses everyone under the bus.
The popularity of Obama departs with the tax man and our ensuing greatest economic depression.
Obama joins Pelosi and Reid to comprise Washington’s Three Stooges.
I never liked them.

I wouldn’t even give Carville that out. The economy was in pretty rough condition in the summer of 2001. Granted, not as bad as today, but it was certainly the low point between 1993 and 2007.

DING, DING, DING… You win the prize! That’s in fact the key. Whether Rush HOPES for President Obama’s failure or not has NO EFFECT on whether the economy will fail or not. On the other hand, President Obama’s policies will have ALL THE EFFECT on whether or not the economy fails.
