Fineman: Washington Establishment concluding Obama in over his head
posted at 8:53 am on March 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Newsweek has transformed itself over the past two years into the cheerleading section of the media Obamabots, but Howard Fineman throws a little cold water on the Age of Obama. The meme of the Greatest Transition Evah has faded away as Barack Obama stumbles from crisis to crisis, and not just in finance. The impression of incompetence has started to spread, and while his approval numbers still remain average, the DC establishment has begun to lose confidence in him.
Even as he delivers the bad news, Fineman still sounds like an apologist:
Surfer that he is, President Obama should know a riptide when he’s in one. The center usually is the safest, most productive place in politics, but perhaps not now, not in a once-in-a-century economic crisis.
Swimming in the middle, he’s denounced as a socialist by conservatives, criticized as a polite accommodationist by government-is-the-answer liberals, and increasingly, dismissed as being in over his head by technocrats.
Luckily for Obama, the public still likes and trusts him, at least judging by the latest polls, including NEWSWEEK’s.But, in ways both large and small, what’s left of the American establishment is taking his measure and, with surprising swiftness, they are finding him lacking.
They have some reasons to be concerned. I trace them to a central trait of the president’s character: he’s not really an in-your-face guy. By recent standards—and that includes Bill Clinton as well as George Bush—Obama for the most part is seeking to govern from the left, looking to solidify and rely on his own party more than woo Republicans. And yet he is by temperament judicious, even judicial. He’d have made a fine judge. But we don’t need a judge. We need a blunt-spoken coach.
So he’s “swimming in the middle” while “seeking to govern from the left”? No wonder people have trouble with his competence. I’m not even sure how Fineman bases his “swimming in the middle” assessment on policy or tone. He’s allowed Nancy Pelosi to lock Republicans out of the legislative process on Porkulus and the omnibus spending bill, tacitly allowed Congress to pass the pork-filled omnibus spending plan, and has rolled out a half-baked plan to vastly grow government over the next ten years as a supposed economic stimulus.
That’s only swimming in the middle if you write for Newsweek, or Mother Jones.
People find him lacking because he keeps failing on tasks large and small. Three Cabinet appointments have gone under in less than two months, as have other senior staff assignments. He promised an economic plan from Tim Geithner during his first press conference, only to have Geithner appear the next day and say that the dog ate his homework. The administration has still failed to roll out the details of TARP II, the auto bailouts, and the full plans for the mortgage relief plan, despite multiple promises to deliver them. His failure to understand protocol during Gordon Brown’s visit embarrassed the US and the Washington establishment, which knew full well how insultingly Obama treated the British Prime Minister.
And what does Fineman write about? What a judicious guy Obama is, and that that’s the problem.

Wow, it only took the Washington establishment 18 months to figure out what most of the people on Hot Air figured out a long time ago.
Obama is unqualified and unaccomplished.
The astounding stupidity and utter worthlessness of the Washington establishment has never been more evident, than when they crowned this clown King.

The title is a little misleading. I mean this is a Fineman piece. It’s basic theme is a “slight” admonition to his guy and a lot of advice of how to get back on track. Courtesies never extended to the Bush Administration. As soon as they thought they say any weak underbelly in his administration, the media bared their teeth.

A man with no executive experience is having trouble handling his new job as leader of the free(for now) world? Naw, that’s not possible. I mean, he’s The One. We were told that he’d heal the nation and lower the tides and magically fix all our problems.
What’s pathetic is that a lot of people did believe he would somehow do all those things despite never having accomplished anything in his life besides win elections. And he couldn’t even do that without getting his opponents kicked off the ballot or marginalized by corrupt judges or journalists.

What liberals and many “centrists” fail to see about Obambi is that his “serene calm” is actually a detachment from reality. It’s how he runs from problems. That is why he can’t bring himself above petty attack campaigns against Rush and actually…you know…lead. It’s his default mode when he doesn’t know what else to do. The “establishment” is bailing not because they see a great leader projecting calm, they see a man who has shut out the world because he is scared to death to make a decision.
Caveat emptor, 52%…Was his “grace” and historical value worth sinking our country further?

Is that all? Really, he admitted it himself with his tacky handling of Brown.
This is completely understandable considering that the oaf has never owned and operated a company, let alone held an executive position in government. It is plain to see he has difficulties with picking reliable and capable managers/secretaries and doesn’t see to have a handle on the distribution of responsibilities and work. Axelrod et al, may know how to run and win an election, but they have no idea how to run a country. In contrast, we can what a poor choice Obama was, not even considering his policies, because of his lack of experience.
GG Democrats!

Well, Howard Fineman’s not a bad guy, and it must really, really pain him to have to write an article like that (and there was more substance to it than Ed showed).
He must also be pained to have to write such article while David Frum is getting the cover story for attacking Rush Limbaugh.
I mean, “Is Obama in Over His Head?” would be a great and more meaningful cover story, no?

Does anyone happen to know if the DVD’s the President gifted to the PM of the UK were the correct format for the UK? My understanding is that Europe DVD’s won’t play in North American players and vice versa.

Is it just me, or did it seem like that didn’t take long? Usually, most get at least a year or so before they really start laying into a new new President (Fla 2k and the eeevillll Booooosh notwithstanding). If even someone like Fineman is starting now, what, 6 weeks in, that tells me that something stinks so bad that even THEY can’t deny it.
There may be some HOPE after all!

I am completely shocked! Who would have ever imagined that being POTUS will be Obama’s LONGEST ever job? Oh, and his FIRST ever real ‘full time’ job. (No, working 100 days in the Senate doesn’t count)
In over his head for sure. To imply that he could ever ‘grow into’ the office is a farce and a complete desecration on graves of our founding fathers and brave citizens who have and are at present defending our nation.
Thank you American Idol voters – you have your Ruben in office now.

I started to read Fineman’s article and quite reading it in disgust when I saw the reference to Obama’s “swimming in the middle”. Pure BS and still in denial about The One. Actually, it’s not The One. It’s the “Dim One”. He’s not that bright and his team is looking just as bad. With the Dim One relying on Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod, the PFluffy guy, Geithner, et al, we are in trouble. We have to pay for and clean up the mess this asshole is leaving for taxpayers.
jdflorida on March 11, 2009 at 9:07 AM
Obama is in over his head. He is being rolled constantly by Pelosi. His White House is being run by a thug who is more concerned with slitting throats than governing. His foreign policy has too many actors, each thinking that appeasment is more important than competence. He either knows nothing about how the US economy functions or is trying to rock the car over the cliff.
But the people who manage to man up and tell him that he is failing can’t bring themselves to actually say what needs to be said.
They are far too desirous of seeing black quarterback do well, to paraphrase Mr. Limbaigh.

The incompetence level in the Obama administration really is no worse than it was in 1993, Year 1 of Clinton. The difference is that in 1993 we were coming out of a mild recession and we had just won the Cold War. Things are just a little dicier right about now.

Cold water? Fineman throws a little cold water?
Tepid water maybe….
Toward the end of Fineman’s “hit job” [/sarc]on Obama, he states –
“The president, known for his eloquence and attention to detail, seemingly unwilling or unable to patiently, carefully explain how the world works — or more important, how it failed [?]. Using FDR’s fireside chats as a model, Obama needs to explain the banking system in laymen’s terms. An ongoing seminar would be great.” (emphasis mine)
To that…the answer is simple. Obama cannot tell us how the world works…because he doesn’t know. No experience. Limited focus. Would Fineman suggest that we start getting our medical advice from a local middle school kid who once read a book about Doogie Howser? Besides, Obama has been doing ongoing seminars since he took office…has been on the road pretty much constantly, guess nobody has told him that after the election, one doesn’t have to campaign like its 2008 anymore. No more seminars. Maybe Obama should read that book about Doogie Howser, too.
Fineman adds, —
“Obama is no socialist, but critics argue that now is not the time for costly, upfront spending on social engineering in health care, energy or education.”
Obama isn’t a socialist? Certainly isn’t a market capitalist. Not yet a Marxist, thank goodness, nor a raving Maoist…yet…but, Mr. Fineman…FDR was a socialist…and so is Obama….just a neophyte socialist, brand new to the job….give Obama a few more weeks or so, Mr. Fineman. He’ll catch on to that socialism thingie.
Lastly, Fineman concludes —
“Other than all that, in the eyes of the big shots, he is doing fine. The American people remain on his side, but he has to be careful that the gathering judgment of the Bigs doesn’t trickle down to the rest of us.”
It done trickled…pretty much shat all over us, too…the Bigs know it, too. He ain’t doin’ jus’ fine.
Cold water? Barely tepid. But, I am sure the hit squad in the White House has already drawn a red grease pencil circle around Fineman’s photo on their future targets list.

izoneguy on March 11, 2009 at 9:26 AM
Its not the format, its the country code on the player and the encoding on the disc. But, essentially you’ve got the right idea, there is a good chance that the discs will be unplayable in the UK since the US and Canada are in region 1 and Europe is in region 2. I think it will depend on whether the DVDs are played on a standalone DVD player or a computer/DVD drive. In the case of a PC, the drive can be altered a limited number of times…but really that is meaningless in this case. I’m betting that the movies are unviewable unless the Brown administration has a US sold player available.
Good point though!

Actually it’s both the region coding AND the format. UK DVDs are almost all coded for Region 2 and they’re in the PAL format(25 frames vs. our NTSC format which is 24). That’s why PAL videos play at a faster pitch.
If you have a region free DVD player that does PAL-to-NTSC(and vice versa) conversion, you can play any DVD in the world. I have one and it’s come in handy since there are quite a few UK discs I’ve imported that have never been released over here(Ricky Gervais’ standup shows for example).
The least Obama could’ve done was get Brown a bunch of Blu-ray discs since those are all NTSC and mostly region free. Not to mention the video quality is vastly superior which never hurts when the recipient of the movies is going blind.

Perhaps the Dems will finally conclude that he is a liability and that pesky birth certificate (not issued in the US) will finally appear!

I have never seen a judge use a teleprompter. How would that work when someone objects? “Recess, I need to call the ballerina. be right back”…trials would last forevah!!
By the by, has anyone heard from Rick Santelli, he seems to have dropped off the radar.

I didn’t vote for the guy but I sure expected a lot more from him than what I’ve seen so far. I didn’t listen to his speeches either, but reading about them one got the impression that this guy was going to be the mother of all presidents. Now we find he can’t even pick a cabinet, (duh, he’s never even hired anyone before now, has he?), he’s let congress go on the wildest spending frenzy in history with apparently no end in sight, and he’s shown he has the creativity and imagination of a walnut when it comes to giving gifts to foreign leaders. And this guy thinks he’d make a great judge? Of what, the Gong Show Ed keeps talking about?

Yes, and many of the comments are directed at people like Couric and Letterman, who not only demand out-sized salaries, but whose anti-American politics are driving away viewers.

He’s already gone grey. He probably HAS realized he is over his head. He’s one whiny son of a bitch being used to sole globalists’ shoes. For now it’s OUR backside flesh getting tanned; not forever. Even Mussolini, the most popular world leader of his day, got strung up in the end.

This is what happens when someone that votes “present” much of the time gets elected to an executive position.
Who could have ever seen this coming……….. other than 99% of this message board I mean?

Pray to God he’s interviewing with Fox Business. I feared he would reap some harm.

Roosevelt has been on the dime since 1946. At that rate we will all be stuck with Barry on the quarter until at least 2072.
