Boston Globe: Romney’s the only adult left standing among the 2012 hopefuls

posted at 8:17 pm on March 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

But — but what about Huck?

Seriously, though, it is starting to feel that way.

For a while, it looked like Mitt Romney would become more a figure of ridicule than promise. Stiff, square, and allegedly two-faced, the former Massachusetts governor was a triple-punchline target of late-night comics.

But now, with a more statesmanlike bearing and some measured criticisms of the Obama administration, Romney suddenly seems like the only adult left standing among the 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls…

[W]hile Limbaugh and some other CPAC speakers were serving up cable-show vitriol, Romney made clear that he wished President Obama well and hoped for the best for the country. He then offered a more measured – and therefore more believable – critique of the new administration.

“Parts of the stimulus will, in fact, do some good,” he averred. “But too much of the bill was shortsighted and wasteful…

He also broke with many in his party to endorse the bank bailout, but repeated his criticism of both Presidents Bush and Obama for using bailout funds to aid the auto industry.

He won the CPAC straw poll, of course, and as I write this he leads the field on InTrade with 24 percent, followed by Jindal at 19 and Palin at 15, neither of whom I expect will run. He’ll have an advantage in the early primaries in 2012, too: Huck will win Iowa thanks to evangelicals, but Romney should take New Hampshire and Michigan easily now that there’s no McCain-type around to run to his left. The question is what happens in South Carolina, where Huck nearly knocked off McCain thanks to Christian voters. If he beats Romney there, it’s anyone’s race. And while in theory Mitt should have an easy time with him in blue-state primaries like New York, economic circumstances may be such that the rich guy is a hard sell compared to the folksy populist, regardless of which one of them has more financial expertise. Maybe Sanford will get in and end up acting as a stalking horse for Mitt, stealing SC away from Huck and splitting enough social-con votes with him elsewhere to give Romney a clear path. Romney/Sanford 2012? I could live with it, and Sanford would take that deal in a heartbeat. He’ll only be 52 and landing on the ticket would give him the national exposure he’ll need to have any chance against Jindal or Palin in 2016.

Exit question: What about Newt? He’s adult-ish, no? If he jumps in, do he and Romney split the centrists and technocrats, leaving Huck as the last man standing?

Yeah, I kind of dig it. They don’t stand a chance unless the economy’s in the toilet, but we could certainly do worse.

Allahpundit on March 10, 2009 at 8:22 PM

I would like to form an opinion, but I’ll have to wait until Rush talks about ’12. Hahahaha.

I hope Sanford gets in, or at least influences the conversation. I’m not convinced Mitt is going to run again, actually, though the odds aren’t bad. I actually expect Newt might through his hat into the ring in ’12.

I don’t think Huck will run again, honestly. He parlayed his run into a paying gig where he gets to keep the furniture and he does not have to work too hard. I don’t really see him giving it up.

No Palin in ’12, no Jindal in ’12, but Palin in ’16 will be a strong horse I think. Experience + time to form a brand. I’m not on either side of the fence on Jindal yet. Smart, but with caveats.

Spirit of 1776 on March 10, 2009 at 8:23 PM

A plant piece by the RNC and the RNC! I’ve been shouting it from the roof tops! Mitt is the choice in 2012 and we have nothing to say about it! Michael Steele knows this. He has been told so by the party bigs! The back room cigar smokers with big dollars have already picked Mitt as the nominee and NOTHING you or I do will change that. They will manipulate the polls and the primaries so that Mitt is the guy in 4 years. They will get Laura and Sean on board and they will start shilling for Mitt as the next Reagan…only better! Watch, it’s already starting! Problem is…Mitt’s a RINO! So, if you are a Republican…have fun! I’m a conservative and I will not “swallow” this time around! I shall either have my own candidate or I will sit home! I’m tired of fixed elections where we no longer matter!

McCain won the nomination due to the order of the primaries and the mix of candidates who cancelled out one another’s votes. As Allah points out the winner will depend much on how the field is rounded out.

McCain was also the “next in line” which tends to work for the GOP. Maybe Mitt is perceived as that guy in 2012.

carbon_footprint on March 10, 2009 at 8:29 PM

At first blush, Romney always appears superficial. But with time and exposure, his appeal always grows as people realize his depth as a very smart and gifted leader. He is the opposite of Obama, who, at first blush, always appears more substantial than he really is. If Republicans pick him, he will eat Obama’s lunch in a debate. I became a Romney fan when I was in Boston during his Governorship.

RedSoxNation on March 10, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Oh this isn’t obvious or anything- You have an afternoon headline about Romney that gets a lot of hits, so you recycle it tonite? Well, I’ll bite again- I like Romney, he’s the best choice we have right now and I think that after 4 years of Barry, we’ll all be ready for a grown up with business experience in the W.H.

anniekc on March 10, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Romney/Sanford? Dude, we knew all those snarky Palin posts were leading up to this. Knew you were plugging both but didn’t realize you want both of them on the same ticket. That explains it all. You are so transparent, Allah Pundit.

ousoonerfan15 on March 10, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Kaitian on March 10, 2009 at 8:32 PM

I very happily cast my vote for Mitt in the primary last year. He is the only one competant to lead in an economic downturn. And we will definitely still be in a recession/depression by 2012.

JAM on March 10, 2009 at 8:32 PM

AP: Jindal and Palin I do not expect to run

AP, are you now clairvoyant what is going to happen in 2011-2012? If you are could you tell me where the stock market and the economy will be then?

You act like Romney is a fait accompli.

First Sarah Palin never said she wasn’t going to run in 2012.

Secondly, there have been 4 separate polls done over the last two weeks asking differeng questions:

1)CNN poll: Who do you want to be GOP nominee in 2012?

2) Hot Air poll: Who is the leader of the Republican Party?

3)John Hawkins informal bloggers poll of 55 right wing bloggers who they want as the GOP nominee in 2012

4)and the current poll at shotsonthehouse.com asking “Who are your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd chcices for the Republican Nod in 2012?

It does not matter AP how the question is asked Sarah Palin comes out on top.

And third AP many conservatives and Republicans who have been recently been contacted by RNC have told it in uncertain terms that for the forseeable future they will only be contributing to SarahPAC. By the way the goal right now of SarahPAC is to help House and Senate conservative candidates to get elected. I know Sarah Palin is charitable, but even you cannot believe that Sarah would be that altrustic raising $50m -$100m and not use some of it to benefit herself. If you really believe that Sarah isn’t going to use this to her advantage AP, then you are not being intellectually honest.

And referring to the HOtairpoll with so much fuss about who is the real leader of the Republican Party currently, I think you and perhaps Ed are being intellectually dishonest by not promoting the fact that 37% of the respondents to your poll now believe that Sarah Palin is the leader of the Republican Party and that 28% believe Rush Limbaugh is.

That is highly significant and one has to believe that you don’t want that info to get out and about is because you and perhaps Ed have an agenda which does not include Sarah or Rush.

technopeasant on March 10, 2009 at 8:44 PM

I will endorse the first candidate that admits to being a Rush Limbaugh Fan, or a Glenn Beck Fan, and holds the same values and principles.

If Sanford isn’t on the ticket, I’ll probably vote libertarian again.

I’ll second that.

If Palin doesn’t run in ’12, she never will. She’s too far away from the political mainstream and cannot pull herself back on the screen if she slips off. Right now she is deliberately holding herself away so she doesn’t get killed – she can’t stay as front-runner/presumptive nominee for 4 years. But anybody who doesn’t think she can be a terrific campaigner when she is ready needs to watch this:

ALAN KEYES is far better than Romney. And he doesn’t promote the violent murder of babies through taxpayer funding as Romney did while governor or Massachusetts. And he doesn’t help legalize gay marriage as Romney did in Massachusetts.

And, ANN COULTER goes unhinged when Romney’s support of abortion is brought up. She has no intellectual defense of Romney there, and its the one button that you can push where she will start talking like Bill Maher – name calling and no facts in an unhinged rant.

I know this because I heard her response to the pro-abort Romney on two radio shows.

Yes, if its between voting for Romney and Alan Keyes I am still voting for Alan Keyes.
