Video: “Public Enemies” trailer

Something sweet to get that “Star Trek” aftertaste out of your mouth: Michael Mann + one of America’s legendary outlaws = crazy delicious. Dillinger captured the public’s imagination because he used balls and ingenuity to get rich quick in the middle of a depression, which makes this flick fortuitously timed indeed. I’m not crazy about Depp in the lead role, having seen him in one too many Tim Burton movies at this point to completely escape the association, but he’s a good actor. Should be okay. Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis is a bigger problem. How did Mann resist the urge to cast someone nebbishy, like Steve Buscemi, as “Little Mel”? The contrast between a dashing criminal and the dorky lawman doggedly pursuing him should have been irresistible; instead he cast a guy whom everyone’s going to look at and think of Bruce Wayne. Ah well. If you liked “The Untouchables,” and pretty much everyone did, you should find something to like here.
Update: Belated exit question: Is this movie doomed to suffer due to unfavorable comparisons to “The Untouchables”?

Looks pretty sick

I look forward to it.
Christian “It’s f*cking distracting!” Bale is great.
carbon_footprint on March 9, 2009 at 8:15 PM
Bale should be good as Purvis, provided he doesn’t growl all of his lines.
Slublog on March 9, 2009 at 8:15 PM
LOL! I kinda liked the growly stuff in B-man
blatantblue on March 9, 2009 at 8:18 PM
Dude, Bale as Purvis is epic fail.
EPIC.
Allahpundit on March 9, 2009 at 8:20 PM
But Allah the guy can act. Give it a chance; watch it when it comes out and then opine about his performance.

Marx said that religion was the opiate of the people. Hemingway said it was the radio. I suppose its now TV, the internet, and movies (even though Hollywood is mostly a propaganda tool). That’s okay, we’ll pick up the revolution after we all get our fix.
genso on March 9, 2009 at 8:23 PM
Pity it has that idiot truther Cotillard.
madne0 on March 9, 2009 at 8:23 PM
Yeah, he’ll be fine, but casting a leading man in that role totally changes the dynamic. Dillinger’s supposed to be an antihero, and he is here, sort of. But Bale dilutes that effect. Having a nebbish like Buscemi wouldn’t.
Allahpundit on March 9, 2009 at 8:24 PM
I can’t look at Bale and not think of his outburst anymore.
may well ruin him in Batman for me, dang it…err F’it rather
jp on March 9, 2009 at 8:24 PM
Well since I economically boycott Bale and that teh ghey guy from 21 Jump Street I’ll watch it online for free.
TheSitRep on March 9, 2009 at 8:24 PM
Yeah, I just can’t hate the guy no matter how much of a diva he is on set. The man can friggin’ act.
Yakko77 on March 9, 2009 at 8:25 PM
That’s a good point.

I put the O/U on the new Star Trek at $210 million gross domestic.
So I guess it’ll be hip to dog it.
This one looks very solid.
Hoodlumman on March 9, 2009 at 8:25 PM
I highly recommend The Prestige with Bale, Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine if you haven’t seen it already.
carbon_footprint on March 9, 2009 at 8:27 PM
Mann did that before with “Heat,” though, and that worked out pretty well.
Plus, if you overlook the ears, there’s something of a resemblance.
Slublog on March 9, 2009 at 8:28 PM
Sorry for the OT but…..
IT’S MOHAMMEDS BIRTHDAY!!!11!!
What do you get for a man that has everything or just needs a revelation from Allah to take it?
A chorus of six year old virgins singing happy birthday would be appropriate if it wasn’t haram to celebrate slaves birthdays.

Try The Machinist.
Eerie and, as you might guess, very well acted.

Follow-up question: Is this movie doomed to fail due to unfavorable comparisons to “The Untouchables”?

This had better be a good movie. I like Depp and Bale, as actors, but they are too pretty. Maybe Daniel Day-Lewis as Dillinger, Tim Blake Nelson as Purvis? I don’t know, still, it better be good.
franklinstein on March 9, 2009 at 8:32 PM
Nah, I think they can get away with it. The Untouchables was 22 years ago.
carbon_footprint on March 9, 2009 at 8:33 PM
I want to start doing more research on where I spend my money. Ideally if it is made buy union labor I’ll buy used or do without.
I know that means I can’t go to the movies anymore but That’s cool with me.
I also want to stop buying anything that is not made in USA.
I will buy Canadian and Mexican if there is no USA product.
TheSitRep on March 9, 2009 at 8:34 PM
It looks like an easy pass for me. Seeing trailers for movies of late begs me to ask after seeing the trailer for Inglorious Bastards. Why is it that Hollywood and everyone else excited and allow movies that celebrate, promote, and praise brutality, torture, and senseless violence, yet shudder at the very mention of Gitmo?
ViperPilot on March 9, 2009 at 8:34 PM
Michael Mann usually makes great movies, “Heat”, “Last of the Mohicans”, “The Insider”, even Miami Vice was pretty good. This looks solid.
brak on March 9, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Admirable TheSitRep, but avoiding Made in China will be as hard as finding a food product without corn in the ingredients these days.
carbon_footprint on March 9, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Bad movie.
Yeah, but it’s so good. A classic.
Allahpundit on March 9, 2009 at 8:37 PM
TMZ just broke the lastest transcript between Allahpundit and Christian Bale:
Christian Bale: Am I going to walk around and rip your blog down, in the middle of a scene? Then why the —- are you walking right through? Ah-da-da-dah, like this in the background. What the —- is it with you? What don’t you ——- understand? You got any ——- idea about, hey, it’s ——- distracting having somebody walking up behind me in the middle of the ——- scene? Give me a ——- answer! What don’t you get about it?
Allahpundit: I was looking at the trailer
Bale: Ohhhhh, goooood for you. And how was it? I hope it was ——- good, because it’s useless now, isn’t it?
Allah: OK.
Bale: —– sake man, you’re amateur. Ace, you got ——- something to say to this prick?
Ace: I didn’t see it happen.
Bale: Well, somebody should be ——- watching and keeping an eye on him.
Ace: Fair enough.
Bale: It’s the second time that he doesn’t give a —- about what is going on in front of the camera, all right? I’m trying to ——- do a scene here, and I am going “Why the —- is Allah walking in there? What is he doing there?” Do you understand my mind is not in the scene if you’re doing that?
Allah: I absolutely apologise. I’m sorry, I did not mean anything by it.
Bale: Stay off the ——- set man. For —– sake. Alright, let’s go again.
Ace: Let’s just take a minute.
Bale: Let’s not take a ——- minute, let’s go again.
Bale: I’m going to ——- kick your ——- ass if you don’t shut up for a second! All right?
Unknown voices: Goldstein. Goldstein. It’s cool.
Bale: I’m going to go… Do you want me to ——- go trash your blog?
Do you want me to ——- trash ‘em? Then why are you trashing my scene?
Allah: I’m not trying to trash your scene.
Bale: You are trashing my scene!
Hurlbut: Christian, I was only…
Bale: You do it one more ——- time and I ain’t walking on this set if you’re still hired. I’m ——- serious. You’re a nice guy. You’re a nice guy, but that don’t ——- cut it when you’re ——- around like this…

It looks pretty cool………..
…… I always liked Michael Mann’s work.
I hope it starts the return of the era’s most epic novelties…..
…. like bank robberies, “Tommy Guns”, and of course,
Men in hats……. :O)
Seven Percent Solution on March 9, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Looks cool, but that very first scene looks exactly like the set from The Untouchables where the stroller is going down the stairs. Anyway, I think it will be good. Just don’t see how they are going to be able to inject Iraq, global warming, or Bush lied in this film.
Vigilante on March 9, 2009 at 8:40 PM
……. funny stuff!
Seven Percent Solution on March 9, 2009 at 8:40 PM
Dillinger was larger than life, criminal and all. This movie will do very well. As for Bale, he is/has been my only moviestar “crush” ever since I saw him as the 10-year-old Jim Graham in Steven Speilberg’s Empire of the Sun. (I was 10 also, nobody panic). hee

You guys are slipping. Why does it take me to point out stuff like this?
JohnJ on March 9, 2009 at 8:45 PM
It looks interesting! Part of it was filmed in northern Wisconsin where Dillinger had a hide out (it’s still there)which is a couple of hours north of me.
CrusaderPatriot on March 9, 2009 at 8:48 PM
I don’t think it should suffer from comparison to the Untouchables. It has a different feel to it; even back then, Kevin Costner was a giant douche. Johnny Depp is a much better actor; Bale looks like he’s playing it very low key, and doesn’t look to be nearly as annoying as Costner’s Eliot Ness. The time periods are similar, but that’s about it. Should it be compared to City Heattoo? Not a good movie, but Eastwood and Burt Reynolds together was teh s**t back then.
I’ll see it.
austinnelly on March 9, 2009 at 8:51 PM
As I said, Michael Mann can do no wrong. Even Ali was decent, albeit got up its own backside a bit.
I remember hearing all about the filming about 20 minutes north of here. I was tempted to go try out as an extra, but didn’t have the time.
That said…pants? Creamed. Looks killer.
MadisonConservative on March 9, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Michael Mann didn’t go on to make “Redacted”. That’s the significant difference.
MadisonConservative on March 9, 2009 at 9:01 PM
My grandmother was the next door neighbor of the cop that shot him. Zarkovich.
robblefarian on March 9, 2009 at 9:06 PM
I worked on the film and saw about half of what was shot (and with Michael Mann, that’s a LOT of tape). You never know for sure because editing makes a huge difference whether a film flows well or blows, but the raw footage was pretty good. Even after seeing every scene I worked on 50 times, I’m still looking forward to seeing the finished movie.
OldManC on March 9, 2009 at 9:06 PM
Plus, the guy playing the FBI agent in this movie can actually act.

The “Untouchables” is overrated, and practically ruined by a terrible, too loud score.
brak on March 9, 2009 at 9:08 PM
No, your opinion is an epic fail. Bale is going to be great.
True_King on March 9, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Dang, it has the unwatchable Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard while it could use more of Christian Bale.
Johnny Depp said something like ,”America is a broken toy”, Cotillard is a 9/11 truther and nobody has any problems with them. Bale might spew a few obscenities but so far hasn’t gone off the lefty end as others and yet people here complain about him. He’s becoming a superstar, probably the only recent one who has done so without paying his tribute to Nazi Left. I am sure the Left is trying hard to hurt his image to make him one of their own and he’s resisted the pressure so far. Plus, he looks damn nice, enough to give beta males like AP a reason to question their own existence.

First flop in a long time for Mann.
Piece of crap. Not even Batman can save this flick.
Talk about a dirty taste in the mouth.
Who’d figure a liberal would chose a criminal and charisma over nobility and action.
Oh, right, Allahpundit.
klickink.wordpress.com on March 9, 2009 at 9:15 PM
Looks like typical overblown, but underdeveloped, Hollywood rubbish. Depp as Dillinger is not right. Deep looks like, and sounds like, a little hispanic gangbanger in this film, not like ’30s bank robber Dillinger. Bad casting. William Purvis was a nerdy little man who was Hoover’s boy toy. David Pierce would have been the right choice for this role if you had to go with a recognizable face.
Movie studios have no balls anymore. They always go with big name actors, because they think if the movie sucks, it will at least guarantee them some rears in the seats, when really a no-name actor, who would be perfect, could be had instead and really make the movie work. They have to turn everything they do into some Disney movie or Las Vegas theme resort hotel. The movie studios generally won’t green light a film unless it comes with a big name, regardless of how inane the casting choice of that big name is. But since this business is run by Hollywood liberals, what kind of thinking process can you expect.

I love old time gangster movies.
I love Depp.
I like Bale.
I’m getting nothing from this trailer. Depp doesn’t look half the Dillinger Oates was and Bale looks flat. It takes more than just the scenery and guns ya know?
Rocks on March 9, 2009 at 9:24 PM
Seriously. Warren Oates owns Dillinger. He looked rough and dangerous; Depp just looks pretty.
And Ben Johnson–whom I actually met once, thank you very much–wow. Christian Bale just can’t measure up.
see-dubya on March 9, 2009 at 9:26 PM
Actually they should have cast Jack Earl Haley here as Purvis and Russell Crowe as Dillinger.

Ho hum. Another Blockbuster with a villain as the hero. Ever wonder why ACORN activists bust into houses that belong to other people? ‘Cause someday Hollywood will cast those vigilantes in a positive light and we’ll all realize how wrong we were to call them criminals when, really, the world is so much more . . . complex.

I’m sure Buscemi would be amazing, he’s one of the best actors around. But he just generally doesn’t get the major roles. It just seems like a very odd suggestion from AP, is all. He is a great man, and served on the FDNY when he was younger. He’d probably have more than a thing or two to say to that French Truther. He volunteered at Ground Zero the day after 9/11 for his old firehouse. He refused to do any interviews or have his picture taken.

moc23 on March 10, 2009 at 12:02 AM
Might be tempted to see this but mainly because of the locations used for the film… When filming began I was pretty happy to hear they were going to use actual historical places of note, I really want to see the shoot out at Little Bohemia. My late grandmother worked there when she was young…
We moved from the UP (upper peninsula of Michigan for those who aren’t familiar) to Green Bay when I was in 3rd grade & still have family up there. You pass Little Bohemia on the road trip & it’s a neat little place in the middle of nowhere – pretty much trees & a lake. I can get how gangsters of that era would find it an appealing place to hide out, not many folks would think to look there…

It’s a Michael Mann flick, so the cinematography is going to be worth the price of admission.
John Dillinger was a moron. If he’d run booze during Prohibition he would’ve made 10 times what he made robbing banks with next to no risk. The federal government didn’t give a damn about bootleggers.
Assuming they paid their taxes, of course.
