The obligatory “Rush rips Newt for calling him irrational” post
posted at 6:55 pm on March 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
When even a guy famous for screaming says it’s time to calm down, it’s probably time to calm down. The boss assured me this morning, though, that people are still interested in the “I hope he fails” debate and the boss is (almost) always right, so here’s the obligatory link to Rush accusing Newt of criticizing him on yesterday’s “Meet the Press” (albeit not by name) because, and I quote, “I am at the top of the mountain of what I do. Everybody underneath it wants what I’ve got… I know that Newt would give his whatever to have what I’ve got.” A taste:
I’m surprised by nothing when I’m dealing with people in the media who think they’re in politics. No, as has always been the case, Anna Lee, the strength and the courage, the energy that I get is from my audience. I wrote a book once, and one of the chapters is “My Success is Not Determined by Who Wins Elections,” ’cause they come and go. They are fly-by-night operators, and most of them stand for nothing until they see a poll about what the American people want, and then they go out and try to say one way or another what the American people want while trying to falsely hold onto an ideology at the same time — and you can’t count on them. You can’t depend on them. They will sell you out; they will throw you overboard to save themselves, faster than anything. And they’ll use you on their way up as often as they can at the same time.
He took an oblique shot at Newt (also not by name) at CPAC too. Watch the clip of Gingrich on MTP insisting that it’s “irrational” to hope Obama fails but okay to hope he changes his mind on policy; opinions differ as to whether that’s what Rush meant all along. And with that, I’ll join Ace and Patterico in the “enough already” camp and let you have at it.

What we need now is a “Rush is an atheist I.D. believer who has a tattoo of Sarah Palin on his butt and drowned Frum’s kitten in his pool” thread.
AP could kill all the birds with one stone, one giant mega-thread to keep the hits up.

Doesn’t the “enough already” conflict here with the “let you have it” ??

“enough already” with the “fail” BS…no where near enough about the substance of his speech! Most people following this issue have no idea what Rush said and why it is so important.
You mean the future of the Country…hold that thought…Idol is coming on…

Newt, tailoring your responses based on polling isn’t always a good strategy. Rush is gaining power by the day, and even though you were on a Lib media platform, word spreads fast. Dis Rush at your own risk.

Eh, I still remember the day Rush opened his show with James Brown’s “I Feel Good” after the GOP took back the Congress in ’94. He’s not bashing Newt. He’s bashing your sweethearts Ross Douthat, Heather MacDonald and Katleen[sic] Parker. Y’know, the ones trying to climb up the media ladder on the knives they stuck in his (and any other conservative’s) back?

TheBigOldDog on March 9, 2009 at 7:22 PM
I love Newt, but he really started losing it when he fell for the global warming nonsense. His idiotic commercials with Pelosi were the low point of his policitical life – and lower than many policiticians ever go. Newt blew a great deal of his credibility with that. His comments about Rush are just as stupid.

The Bears, as they are currently rostered, without Ditka anywhere to be found… Rush and Palin win and the QB gets taken off the field on the medical cart.
Add in Ditka the player and I think Palin has a hard time covering him.

Enough already.
Newt is a politician (opportunist implied), a brilliant analyst and tactician. Newt can out debate anyone, including Rush. Newt accomplished things that Rush only talked about. It isn’t as if Newt picked a fight by moderating tone. If Newt covets Rush’s megaphone, so what. But that’s only what Rush said, Newt didn’t. That Rush does not covet Newt’s or any politician’s life is a matter of record.
So Allap is going to blame stringing entrails as ‘a people want more of thread’ on Michelle’s dictum. /tisk

carl todd hand on March 9, 2009 at 7:23 PM
This is one of those endless cycles. Rush says he hope Obama fails, its a news story. Obama responds, its a news story. Everyone else who wants attention because they are attention whores respond, its a news story. Rush, who wants attention, responds, its a news story. The people Rush responded to respond, its a news story. A third party weighs in on the “fued” between Rush and the person he responded to, its a news story. Rush responds to the third party, its a news story. A fourth party responds to the response of Rush to the third party whom commented on the response from Rush to the initial respondee, its a news story.
This is endless.

The real news here is that the criminally imcompetent Obama administration can’t seem to get Geithner the help that idiot needs, in the middle of a financial meltdown, while it has the time to attack private American citizens who attack its insane policies.
These private citizens are well within their constitutional rights not to have publicly funded governmental cabals specifically organized just to shut them up.

Newt’s another washed up politician who couldn’t stay out of scandal. If he really wanted to do something useful, how about getting his head out of his a$$ and finding out the real science of global warming (there is none) and do something pertinent to the conservative cause. Not hang around the Dems, trying to play peace maker. We are at war for the future of this country and we don’t need Neville Chamberlain.
flytier on March 9, 2009 at 7:35 PM
A caller to Rush today said that he was the leader of the opposition, not a leader of the GOP. I think this is exactly right.
Newt is brilliant and had so much promise but he blew it when he was having an affair at the same time he called out Bill Clinton for the same thing. And then he left his wife who was in the midst of cancer treatments in order to pursue his mistress.
I have principles and when someone is wrong, they are wrong and I don’t care what party they are in.

Come on AP, you know you’re dealing with a very volatile topic here. We now know the WH purposely has planned and organized attacks against Rush Limbaugh. That is a much bigger and much more important story than Newt (the microphone whore) Gingrich taking a cheap shot at Limbaugh.
If the Patterico post yesterday proved anything, it proved that the majority of the HA community views it a mistake for people on our side choosing to take bits and pieces of Limbaugh’s jib, and make that a story when there is much bigger stories involving the other side; their agenda, their thugs; their behavior; their Hypocrisy; the lies, distortions, & outright fabrication of news…. We are witnessing events many have never seen. Millions of people have lost 50% of their retirement in the past several weeks.
Many of us simply feel that Rush is our mouth piece right now, and that people like you are in a position to help much more than you currently are.

I can see how liberals would be quick to interpret his “I hope he fails” remark as somehow wanting the country to suffer just to damage Obama- liberals have spent the last 8 years wishing just that.
What I don’t understand is how otherwise reasonable, intelligent people would interpret it that way. Obama’s policies will damage the country no matter how much wishing Rush or anyone else does about it. Wanting (and helping) him to fail is what anyone concerned about the direction Obama is taking things should be doing.
In terms of wanting Obama to fail politically- failing to get his policy enacted and rightly getting the blame for his horrendeous and counterproductive policies- damned straight I want him to fail.
I sure as hell don’t want the economy to get worse, the deficit to increase, or our foreign policy to get screwed up. However it ain’t up to me, and if and when Obama makes these things happen I hope he and his failed leftist ideals get tossed into the trashbin of history as a result.
Newt should know better. I wonder if he actually read the full transcript of the “I hope he fails” bit.

Over the last 8 years ( Except for a few post 911 weeks) the Dems trashed Bush like I have never seen anyone trashed before. From Schumers daily press conferences to Al Gore saying ” He played on your fears”. And Michael Moore. And guess what? The Dems now own House , Senate and Presidency by playing dirty.

Newt shouldn’t have to read the transcript. Newt’s a historian and knows the history of the USSR as well as anyone. He is just unwilling to admit that the Precedent is a marxist bent on revenge who will destroy this country if given the chance. Newt is trying, essentially, to hold a civilized conversation with plankton, pretending that the plankton understand him.
Any historian knows that the Russians would have been much better of if Lenin had failed. But Lenin succeeded, even as all of his policies failed miserably. Newt should have just known this and understood it.
That said, I still like Newt, but he has just lost credibility with me on a few issues.

Others stories do exist; such as this one…
One more thing: Coleman didn’t make this point, but Franken’s lead is but a fraction of the number of votes that were illegally cast by illegal aliens, students from Wisconsin, and so on. If only qualified voters had been allowed to cast ballots, Coleman would have won by a margin far greater than Franken’s razor-thin 225-vote lead. If Franken ultimately becomes a United States Senator, he will owe his seat to the Democratic Party’s deliberate strategy, here in Minnesota as around the country, of facilitating voter fraud by frustrating all efforts to require voter identification.
While our own are stuck on a few words thrown around by Rush, real stories are slipping right on by.
