Quote of the day

posted at 10:32 pm on March 9, 2009 by Allahpundit

“I’m often criticized for not being a ‘real’ Republican, and I have been called a RINO—Republican In Name Only—in the past. Many say I am not ‘conservative enough,’ which is something that I am proud of. It is no secret that I disagree with many of the old-school Republican ways of thinking. One of the biggest issues from which I seem to drift from the party base is in my support of gay marriage. I am often criticized for previously voting for John Kerry and my support of stem-cell research. For the record, I am also extremely pro-military and a big supporter of the surge and the Iraq war.

More so than my ideological differences with Ann Coulter, I don’t like her demeanor. I have never been a person who was attracted to hate or negativity. I don’t believe in scare tactics and would never condone or encourage anyone calling President Obama a Muslim. But controversy sells and Coulter is nothing if not controversial. Everything about her is extreme: her voice, her interview tactics, and especially the public statements she makes about liberals. Maybe her popularity stems from the fact that watching her is sometimes like watching a train wreck.”

Ms. McCain, I guess it’s a good idea that Ann Coulter just doesn’t care what you think. I know I don’t.

To the rest of the HotAir bunch, this is not an example of the voting block I wish to attract.

Is this the new GOP tactic, lightly attack each other to constantly be in the news? Why again was Megan McCain commenting on Ann Coulter at all? It just seems like there are a bunch of people who want attention so they go and attack others for said attention.

Topsecretk9 on March 9, 2009 at 10:38 PM

Actually Megan having your father as the head of the Republican Party was the disaster. He would however have made an excellent Democratic Presidential candidate. Mike Pence 2012.

she’s not hateful or negative…she stands up for her beliefs and she’s defamed by people like you who cannot defeat her arguments..

right4life on March 9, 2009 at 10:40 PM

I agree completely about Coulter, AP. She is perfectly willing to sacrifice the Republican party’s chances in any election in order to get her name in the news so she sells more books. I’m not a Republican but it seems that the party should wake up to that fact and disown her. The same thing applies to Limbaugh as well IMO.

Benaiah on March 9, 2009 at 10:40 PM

I’m still not that hot on Coulter, but I have been warming to her. And this is despite her personality.

darii on March 9, 2009 at 10:40 PM

What Megan accomplished in her life that we should take her opinion seriously? She’d be a nobody except for her dad.

Really, why would you post the opinion of someone whom no one takes seriously?

blue13326 on March 9, 2009 at 10:40 PM

As the pundit begins a series of national debates this week, Meghan McCain says that having her as the face of the Republican Party is a recipe for disaster.

Time to Make a “Love Connection”
—Russ from Winterset
It’s pretty bad when you lose “conservatives” like Buckley, Frum & Parker, but how low do you have to go before you lose rock-ribbed conservatives like……Meghan McCain! Writing over at The Daily Beast, Ms. McCain has declared in her most recent column that Ann Coulter Does Not Speak For Meghan McCain!

I know, I know. Whoda thunk it?

Now Meghan McCain has several things going for her here:

1. She’s rich. Mom’s family business means that Ms. McCain could coast through life like a Kennedy or a Heinz-Kerry.

2. Meghan McCain is a hottie. Let’s not let this thread degenerate into the myriad of ways that we’d “hit it”, but instead simply stipulate that Meghan Is Hot.

3. Her brothers were raised in a household where military service to our country is valued, so I think it’s probable that she feels the same way. That’s a big plus for her character in my book.

With all that said, I have a few problems with Ms. McCain’s position here.

Let me get this straight: Meghan McCain’s father spent the last 2 years and the years 1999 & 2000 vying for the nomination of the Republican Party for the Presidency, and Ms. McCain has only been a registered Republican for ONE YEAR? OK, let’s assume that she was too young to be politically aware when he ran the first time. Why wait until spring of 2008 to register? Was she waiting to see if Daddy got the nomination before she came on board with his party’s nominee? If John McCain had lost the primaries and had to watch this last election from the bullpen, I think it’s probable, even CERTAIN, that Ms. McCain would still be sitting on the fence. Let’s just say that her commitment to the Republican Party is based more on who their latest Presidential nominee was rather than a long-standing commitment to shared values. Hell, at least she’s still talking to Daddy, which is more than the Giuliani kids will do with their Pops.

I don’t mind seeing think-pieces from people who don’t think as clearly as I do. I usually figure that they’ve got something in their background that gives them an insight into the subject that I might not have. You know, like reading a Leonardo DiCaprio column on global warming because one of Leo’s 27 cars is a Prius? But Ms. McCain’s writing gig at the Daily Beast seems to be solely based on the fact that her Daddy ran for president last year. Shit, at least Chris Buckley wrote a few good novels while he was living off WFB’s conservative bona fides. What has Meghan McCain done that compels me to give two craps and a stroke about what her position on issues in the political arena happens to be?

I think that I’ve got a solution that will kill two birds with one stone. Ms. McCain previously lamented the effect of the 2008 election on her dating life, and we all know a certain NYC-based Beta Male pundit who couldn’t get laid at a women’s prison, even if he showed up with a bottle of roofies and a fistfull of pardons.

Let’s see if we can get these two wacky kids together and start the healing process!

On the plus side, this would make an EPIC sitcom. Just spitballing here, but I think the first season of this sure-thing powerhouse could revolve around the happy couple and their wacky misadventures on the way to the altar. The difficulties in getting the groom’s hot-blooded Asian American guardian to agree with the wife’s cranky old war hero father on the caterer, florist and photographer for the wedding is a multicultural EPIC WIN for whichever network picks this up first. Hell, daddy dropping the “gook” bomb at the first meeting between the families could carry an entire episode by itself!

This idea is pure genius, and I’m just GIVING. IT. AWAY. Because I care.

Entelechy on March 9, 2009 at 10:43 PM

JihadKiller1s1k on March 9, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Why again was Megan McCain commenting on Ann Coulter at all?
thphilli on March 9, 2009 at 10:37 PM

Because she’s bored now that her daddy blew the big election and desperately needs attention.

BTW AP, “the old-school Republican ways of thinking” are the moderate blue blood Rockefeller/McCain ways of thinking. Once we dumped the Bob Michael “I love being the minority” way of thinking and embraced the new thinking of Reagan and the Republican Revolution, we actually started to WIN some elections. It must suck to be winners but be sneered at by the fellow cocktail party guests. Some of us just prefer to win since the cocktail party set will never like us.

jnelchef on March 9, 2009 at 10:44 PM

LOL the irony.

Sweetheart your brand of “conservastism” isn’t. Admit it your dad was an awful candidate and would never win an election. Hell you voted for John Kerry, were it John McCain he would have lost to Kerry too…

Theworldisnotenough on March 9, 2009 at 10:44 PM

@ TexasJew on March 9, 2009 at 10:42 PM

Ann Coulter is great, but don’t think for a minute that she has the best interest of the GOP or conservatives in mind. She is a wonderful speaker and book writer, but she says what needs to be said to sell books and to generate interest for her speaking engagements. A majority of those things should never be said if the best interest of the party was truly at heart.

thphilli on March 9, 2009 at 10:45 PM

…does Allah pundit really agree that Ann Coulter is hateful?

Topsecretk9 on March 9, 2009 at 10:42 PM

Benaiah

Whoops! I thought that quote was from AP and didn’t see it was from McCain until I clicked the link. In any case, I agree with that portion of what she said.

I also agree with some other posters in this thread that her Dad being the Republican nominee was the disaster of the last presidential race.

Benaiah on March 9, 2009 at 10:45 PM

What’s the deal with all the double posting these days? Why even bother having it as a headline if you’re going to post it here?

I won’t repeat everything I said before, but it’s hard to take a girl seriously who only became a Republican because her daddy got the party nod. We railed on Michelle Obama for her recent discovery of her pride as an American, but Megan is really no different as a Republican.

Also, I’ve been hoping that since we’re no longer in power, we’ll be able to concentrate a little more on the opposition rather than the infighting that’s so prevalent in this party, but obviously I was wrong. Apparently Obama and her merry band of cabinet members aren’t enough of a target.

Esthier on March 9, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Okay, Allah. We know that you tripped and fell on your keyboard and this quote by a five year old got put up by mistake. We’ll all turn around for a minute and you can put the real QoTD up.

When are Democrats going to disown liberals who call Americans racist and ignorant, who think debate is calling conservatives “Hitler”, and who claim if you don’t support them you’re “anti-science”? When are conservatives going to start highlighting liberals who do these things instead of debating who to drive out of the Republican party next? When are conservatives going to stop falling into the trap of arguing about people instead of ideas? Liberals want us to argue about people instead of ideas! Our ideas are our greatest strength!

So, your solution is for Republicans to disown staunch conservatives and replace them with .. David Frum, who couldn’t find his head if it were glued to his ass.
Thanks for the insight, trollboy.

I’m perfectly fine with staunch conservatives like Coulter and Limbaugh, and many others. Opinions may vary, but why disown people who fight the fight and don’t run away? These two are the media gladiators of the movement, and they are willing to fight and to support people like Mick Romney, who would have beat Obama. How radical a candidate was Romney? The socialist Dems are trying to paint Limnbaugh and Coulter as supporting David Duke. Why play their game?

The Quote of the Day used to be more in line ideologically in the olden days but it was never a substitute for Allahpundit’s opinion. Recently it seems to more provacative. I think that is more a reflection of the conservative movement finding itself. If I had to guess Allahpundit falls more into the “realist” camp. Kind of like Newt Gingrich. He tends to accept the Democrat narrative and wants to offer better more conservative big government solutions than the Democrats.

Allahpundit I only say this because in alot of posts that you write I notice a skepticism towards sticking to conservative philosophy and seperating the wheat from the chaf, lest it mean an even bigger Democrat majority. But hey let them throw the country off the cliff, that is the best way to clean it up. Watch what happens to California. Welfare will be a thing of the past. The state will go into Federal receivership and will have dramatically cut back all services, nothing will be untouched. The nation will have a huge wake up call.

jcheney on March 9, 2009 at 10:57 PM

Miss McCain should try painting, her writing and politics are illogical.

My aim, then, was to whip the liberals, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread me. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

So you want to ban Michelle Malkin from her own site?

Brilliant idea!

“I don’t HATE McCain. [10 word snip] I never liked him or his policies”

enjoy barry’s term for us, won’t you?!

Dang what is with the trolls? When did they get here. Ban all the people that disagree with Megan McCain. Are these loons really trying/thinking they can redefine conservatism?

Lest we forget they shoved McCain down our throats, and now they are fattening up Jindal for 2012.

Is it conservative to want people banned for their opinions, brick?

AprilOrit on March 9, 2009 at 10:54 PM

BS, April. So what, it’s fine to be hateful towards Coulter, but it’s somehow crossing the line to be so towards Megan?

The woman is expecting people to take her opinion on the GOP seriously when she can’t even admit that had her father lost the nomination she would have voted for Obama, despite her lie that she supports the Iraq War (and how exactly does that square with her Kerry vote in 2004?).

Don’t preach “big tent” and then ask AP to ban all of those you disagree with. You’re generally much better than this.

and we all know a certain NYC-based Beta Male pundit who couldn’t get laid at a women’s prison, even if he showed up with a bottle of roofies and a fistfull of pardons.

I thought it was just the quote of the day, something which encapsulates the news of the day and fodder for an overnight thread.

Well, since I don’t think many consider Megan McCain’s inane rants encapsulating the news of the day and since it was already posted in the headlines. I guess I just got this crazy impression Allah was enthralled with the sentiment of a 5 year old and thought it ought to be reposted again. Silly me.

I’m not a Republican but it seems that the party should wake up to that fact and disown her. The same thing applies to Limbaugh as well IMO.

Benaiah on March 9, 2009 at 10:40 PM

Are you speaking as a potential Republican or are you speaking out of your ass?
