Operation Rushbo “explicitly authorized” by White House

posted at 6:20 pm on March 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Last week, Politico reported that the White House had quarterbacked “Operation Rushbo” as a means of demonizing Republicans, exactly the kind of political character assassination Barack Obama had campaigned against for the past two years.  Today, the International Herald-Tribune and the New York Times confirm this, albeit inadvertently, in a profile of Obama’s closest political adviser.  David Axelrod gave the order to launch the attack machine:

A glimpse of Axelrod’s day offers a look at how he spends his time.

He arrives at the White House shortly after 7 a.m., a torturously early hour for a man known during the campaign for sending messages until the small hours of the morning. A cup of Earl Grey tea is waiting for him — he hates the taste of coffee and recalls having only two cups in his life — as he walks into his first appointment of the day, a meeting in the office of Rahm Emanuel, the chief of staff, who has been a friend for 25 years.

He attends the economic briefing in the Oval Office, where the latest news and grim statistics are relayed to the president by a battery of advisers. When the classified intelligence briefing begins, Axelrod leaves the room. Later, he and a speechwriter sit down with Obama to review the three-ring binder containing each speech or statement the president will make that day.

Often in the late afternoons, he walks to the Situation Room to attend some meetings of the National Security Council, stopping to grab a handful or two of the M&Ms that are in a large bowl outside the room.

He also helps decide which fights to pick and which ones to avoid, making him a leading voice in setting the political tone in Washington. The recent back-and-forth with Rush Limbaugh, for example, was explicitly authorized by Axelrod, who told aides that it was not a moment to sit quietly after Limbaugh said he hoped that Obama would “fail.”

Hmm.  After my initial post on Operation Rushbo, some criticized Politico for overreaching on their report.  Do you think they may start to apologize for it, now that the NYT (which owns the IHT) has confirmed it, even as an afterthought?

And for that matter, why didn’t the New York Times report this separately?  The White House has ginned up an attack machine to pillory Rush Limbaugh, but meanwhile dozens of high-level appointments have yet to be made at Treasury.  They’re too overwhelmed to figure out correct protocol for Gordon Brown’s visit (and too busy to offer decent gifts), but they have the time to coordinate attacks on a radio-show host.

That’s an interesting set of priorities — for both Obama and the New York Times.

Look, Rush would be the first to say that if the stupid attacks on him from the geniuses at the White House takes away resources from their poisonous policies, then by all means continue. Let Axelrod show up at 6 a.m. (why is starting work at 7 a.m. considered so heroic?) and guzzle some overly caffeinated drinks.

Color me surprised that President Scratching Finger is immature, thin-skinned and aggressively partisan. I am sure the millions of people losing their jobs are comforted that Obama still finds the time to attack a radio personality, spend a few trillion and throw parties. The Brits can wait, though.

chunderroad on March 9, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Interesting…I will be curious if Rush picks up that Axelrod was in on it too.

One thing it shows is Axelrod and the gang are really reflexive. That leaves a weakness that can be exploited. Being reflexive in a campaign is one thing being reflexive in the WH is another. You can’t flip flop and have things forgotten as easily as this strategy requires while in the Presidency. Any rememberance of Bush’s presidency will make us realize that the opposition frames stuff for the wall and their is no clock to run out like a campiagn.

This would make for an EXCELLENT TV spot.

That’s an interesting set of priorities — for both Obama and the New York Times.

It’s not a matter of Obama’s priorities – it’s a matter of his competencies. He’s good at playing political games (e.g., going after Rush) but not so good at leading and making decisions (e.g., pretty much most everyone he’s every associated with, dealing with foreign powers whether ally or enemy, and dealing with a financial ‘crisis’).

The audacity of hope was for his campaign
Fear and demonetization will be for his reign

His presidency is shaping up to be much more like that of a Benito Mussolini

So Rush Limbaugh is to Obama what the Jews were to Hitler? Yes, I guess so.

If Barack Obama keeps this up much longer I will have to change Mussolini to Hitler and change Houdini to something that rhymes with it.

You obviously think words have meaning, and that when Obama says something, he means it. But this is just a case of what he said is not what you think you heard. Unskilled in the way of Democratic “nuance”, you fail to grasp the message, not the words.

For instance, there are times when you think ‘Bama’s just ‘makin shit up’. Not true. When he says it, he believes it, if he believes it, it’s true, ergo sum, not something that he’s making up on the fly. See how simple it all is?

Obama on the other hand, is trotted out as some sort of genius (or Jesus for those of his worshippers) on steroids.

Only the true survive. Only the strong survive. Only the smart survive.

We will survive. Obama, not so much.

A cup of Earl Grey tea is waiting for him — he hates the taste of coffee and recalls having only two cups in his life

Further confirmation that The Precendent’s closest advisors are all little sissy boys.

The White House has ginned up an attack machine to pillory Rush Limbaugh, but meanwhile dozens of high-level appointments have yet to be made at Treasury.

All this time we’ve been comparing Obama to the wrong former President. He’s not like Carter, he’s like Nixon. Without the charm.

David and Rahm set the agenda for the day? Then the communicator-in-chief strolls in for the daily marching orders?

I sure miss Carl Rove, the Texas gentleman.

That is rich.

getalife on March 9, 2009 at 7:14 PM

Could very well be. Ogabe is predicating his policy on the public’s relatively high opinion of him, he understands that it can disappear in an instant and his ability to pass whatever he wants will evaporate. As long as the illusion lasts, Ogabe will have an easier time.

Bishop on March 9, 2009 at 7:03 PM

On that subject have you ever seen the MSM argue that the opposition should go along with a law or policy because of the personal approval rating of the President?

I have seen that several times used as an argument. The popularity of Obama.

They seemed to know that warmed over socialism smells like sh*t once the public gets over the image created that Obama knows best what is right and they better not debate the deatils and let the whiff out.

A brilliant distraction.

The only thing that warrants distraction is failure.

http://www.newsmax.com/headlines/pelosi_durbin_amendment/2009/03/08/189685.html?s=al&promo_code=7BCB-1

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is supporting legislation that will force the Federal Communications Commission to “promote diversity” on the airwaves – a move many see as a stealth effort to regulate conservative-dominated talk radio without bringing back the controversial Fairness Doctrine.

Pelosi, D-Calif., has thrown her support to an amendment in a Senate bill that directs the FCC to explicitly “take actions to encourage and promote diversity in communication media ownership and to ensure that broadcast station licenses are used in the public interest,” according to CNS News.

More like Al Jolson. Who’s behind the mask?

Key West Reader on March 9, 2009 at 7:15 PM

Let’s see:
1. A cup of Earl Grey (with or without milk?)
2. Sit down with Rahm “Tutu” Emmanuel
3. Economics meeting, gets chased out before the classified briefing
4. Rehearses Obambi on his lies for the day
5. Handful of M&Ms
6. Makes his gripe list

My cat could do this job, but he’d barf up the M&Ms.

How is that gop leadership working out for ya?

Axe you magnificent bastard.

getalife on March 9, 2009 at 7:16 PM

The White House authorized the attacks on Limbaugh… but they’re “overwhelmed” and “don’t have time” for the British Prime Minister. Priorities, indeed.

The Obama administration is proving itself to be what we predicted during the campaign — the very worst combination of ill will and incompetence. Jimmy Carter meets Bill Clinton’s narcissism, on steroids, without the oral sex. (Or does that get rolled up in “Obama sucks?”)

At this point in time, Mizz Pelosi can throw her skinny a$$ in front of a train, be hit and smashed like a pancake; re-incarnate herself as human turd, be stepped on by a bum and have just a schmintz bit more credibility.

Nancy Pelosi. The leader of the insane klown posse that is driving us to hell at 185 mph in a windstorm. She can kiss my patootee.

Obama, Axelrod, Emanuel, Geithner… a low-rent bunch that got seated at the “grown-up” table prematurely.

Thugs, cheats, liars, crooks.

Yep, there is a concerted effort by Big Dummy and his media whores to keep the illusion alive, to keep breathing air into the idea that Ogabe knows what he is doing when it is apparent to all but the most retarded (getaclue, that would be you) that he is in WAAAAAAY over his head.

AubieJon on March 9, 2009 at 7:19 PM

That’s an interesting set of priorities — for both Obama and the New York Times.

Because liberals are children. They will cry and get into an “I’m rubber, you’re glue” shouting match rather than attempt to be useful leaders of the country.

getalife no party out of power has a designated “person” that is the leader after a Presidential election so nobody is looking for one anymore than they have in the past.

Quote me who the democrat leader was from 2001-2007 if it is so obvious to you. It wasn’t Obama he wasn’t even a part timer till 2005. I await the list.
