Obama phones NYT, tries to reassure them he’s not a socialist
posted at 4:41 pm on March 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Or, more precisely, that he’s no more of a socialist than George W. Bush was. Aim high, Barry.
I don’t think the Times needed any reassuring. On the contrary:
“Well, I just think it’s clear by the time we got here, there already had been an enormous infusion of taxpayer money into the financial system. And the thing I constantly try to emphasize to people if that coming in, the market was doing fine, nobody would be happier than me to stay out of it. I have more than enough to do without having to worry the financial system. The fact that we’ve had to take these extraordinary measures and intervene is not an indication of my ideological preference, but an indication of the degree to which lax regulation and extravagant risk taking has precipitated a crisis.”
He concluded the brief call by saying, “I think that covers it.”
The phone call came after the president was asked aboard his plane: “Are you a socialist as some people have suggested?”
He was clear in his first answer: “You know, let’s take a look at the budget – the answer would be no.”
“Is there anything wrong with saying, ‘Yes’?” a Times reporter pressed.
There is, of course, something wrong with saying yes, which is why The One’s straining so hard to rebrand hard-left statism as non-ideological, centrist “pragmatism,” driven by nothing more than a desire to find common-sense solutions to the problems of the day even though he was campaigning on these “solutions,” like health-care reform, long before there was any economic problem. That was the takeaway from his SOTU — that he doesn’t believe in big government, a claim that’s had pundits from George Will to Christopher Buckley laughing ever since. Riddle me this: If Obama’s intervention in the market is such anathema to his worldview, why do sinister, Snidely-Whiplash-ish comments about the crisis being such a wonderful opportunity for the left’s agenda keep popping out of the mouths of people in his cabinet? If Dick Cheney called an economic catastrophe an opportunity for the right, Pat Leahy would want to hold Senate hearings on it. Good grief.

He is a socialist in every meaningful way. He is trying to keep the messengers talking about Rush.
It the NYT calls him a socialist, that is way worse than if Sean Hannity calls him a socialist because of the NYTimes leftward bent….so he had a panic attack.
I still think the funniest thing he has done since becoming POTUS was give the British PM a bunch of DVD’s that can be purchased at Walmart. Mark Steyn rules.

The article comntinued…
Obama paused. I heard the muffled voice say, “What is wrong with my prompter?” After another short delay, President Obama came back on the phone and asked me if I thought he answered my question sufficiently. I told him that I did not hear his answer, not letting on that I heard is muffled question. The line went quiet again for a couple seconds. Obama finally said, “Well I hope I answered all questions clearly,” and he then hung up the phone.

It’s beginning to break down around him. Washington Post, NYT, even Chris Matthews chipping away.
My main problem with BHO is his lack of perspective. It confirms what I thought all along, he’s not a natural leader.
A true leader intuitively reads the opposition and works to bring them in.
It’s not in him.

Actually, Keynes would think Obama was nuts. Porkulus may be sold as Keynesian it isn’t even close – Keynes’ theory dictates spending a lot less than we are an in completely different ways. Porkulus is about establishing Democrat power and expanding the power and influence of the federal government – it’s just been sold as a solution to our economic woes.

When asked if he was a Socialist, Obama didn’t have time to get his teleprompters up.

Not a great parallel. When an unprecedented terror attack occurs, it’s reasonable to a) dismantle the regime that harboured the terrorists, and b) start putting the screws to other like-minded regimes that might be inclined to follow suit. Agree with it, or not, the logic follows.
If the economy hits the skids, investors start taking it in the ear, and people are losing their jobs, you can’t say that the reasonable & rational response is to nationalize health care, give the teachers unions and acorn a ginormous slush fund, slash the military and tax the hell out of everybody. That does not follow.
So yes, leftards would make that argument.

Obama’s inability, off teleprompter, to explain his political world view other than in a few catch phrases (like his “spread the wealth” line to Joe the Plumber) makes is more likely he’s only enamored with those beliefs in so far as they helped him get elected to his political offices, and that he’s more of a vessel for people on the left who couldn’t have ever hoped to have gotten elected on their own.
But once you get to the presidency, you have to stand for something, even if its mushiness. All the skill at teleprompter reading and on-screen affability will only keep the swing voters with Obama for so long if the economy keeps getting worse, and hostile countries start testing our willingness to back up our allies overseas (the latter could turn out to be an even bigger problem than the former for Obama, because the big media outlets will be willing to spin the domestic problems to help Barack by blaming Bush and the Republicans, but foreign leaders opposed to the U.S. don’t give a damn what the nightly news spin is, or even if the new president wants government to take over the private sector — if they think Obama’s weak, they’re going to take advantage of it).
jon1979 on March 9, 2009 at 5:19 PM
If it’s true that axelrod writes the scripts, then he sure is stuck on the blame Bush track. Guess he hasn’t figured out that most voters of any stamp have more or less forgotten about Bush or are in the process of doing so. I wonder how long they’ll keep it up?

Obama keeps saying that he inherited a horrible economy from George W. Bush.
Why then is his solution to continue doing the things that George W. Bush did to make the economy bad?
If my argument was that X created a bad economy by doing Y, I would definitely NOT be saying, “I’m going to fix the bad economy by doing Y to a greater extent.”
Does President Obama:
A) Not really believe that George Bush’s spending created the problem but keeps saying it because it polls well
B) Think that the spending created the problem but that spending more will magically fix the problem
C) Plan on spending as much as he can regardless of what problems it creates
OR
D) Have no idea what he’s doing and is just making it up as he goes?
