How would an NYT interview with Ann Coulter go?
posted at 5:20 pm on March 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Ever wonder what would happen if a New York Times reporter got an interview with Ann Coulter? So did Gray Lady cultural reporter Dave Itzkoff, and he got more than he bargained when he sent his request for an e-mail interview. Coulter replied to all of his questions — in her inimitable style. Itzkoff asked Coulter about her debate tonight with Bill Maher, and Coulter used all-caps for her replies to set them apart from his questions:
Many thanks, in advance, for taking these questions — let alone opening an email from the New York Times.
I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW, I AM THE TREASON TIMES MOST LOYAL READER. I WAS HOPING YOUR EMAIL WAS A DISCOUNT SUBSCRIPTION OFFER.
I get those all the time, but mostly from the Strib.
Have the events of recent years put a strain on your relationship with Bill, or do you still regard him as a friend (politics notwithstanding)?
I LOVE BILL, BUT I HATE HIS RETARDED MOVEON.ORG AUDIENCE ALMOST AS MUCH AS HE DOES.
I used to like Politically Incorrect, but the new HBO show should be barred by Geneva Conventions. If we’re making al-Qaeda detainees watch it, someone should get prosecuted. Rarely does one see an aggregation of ignorance so profound and prolonged in one spot — except, perhaps, Academia.
Itzkoff then suggests that tonight’s debate might help foster a spirit of “bipartisanship”. It’s at this point that Coulter makes clear that Itzkoff’s outgunned:
YOU SEEM TO BE UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT OF “DEBATE.” THE IDEA, SINCE AROUND THE TIME OF, OH SAY, ARISTOLE, IS TO DERIVE TRUTH. I DO NOT BELIEVE THE POINT OF THE LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATES, FOR EXAMPLE, WAS TO “FOSTER MORE BIPARTISANSHIP.”
How exactly does anyone conclude that a debate on policy fosters bipartisanship? Unless one has a debate topic so pointless as to get everyone to agree — such as “Do you want world peace?” — the exercise exists to put opposing viewpoints to a rhetorical test. You can almost hear Coulter rolling her eyeballs at this suggestion.
I’ll save her last blast at Itzkoff for you to click and read yourself. I have to give Itzkoff and the Times credit for publishing it, although they probably knew that they had little choice — as Coulter would have published it herself and accused the Gray Lady of hiding it.
Addendum: I’ve been critical of a few of Ann’s statements in the past, but she can be hilarious at times. She was one of our best guests on the NARN show a few years back. This exchange shows why it’s best to be prepared when having a dialogue with her.

Lay them to waste, Ann.

Sometimes you use honey. Other times a flamethrower will do.
The NY Times was long overdue for a flamethrower.

Well cease and desist the critical part. Let her be herself for better or worse. Her appeal lies there.
jeanie on March 9, 2009 at 5:24 PM
As a libertarian, I despise Bill Maher. Nothing pisses me off more than liberals calling themselves “libertarian” to look hip whilst spouting socialist rhetoric out of the other side of their mouth. Just because you want to smoke pot doesn’t make you a libertarian.

No, Ann, this is the era of Hope and Change. No more meanies!!! Let’s not talk substance. Let’s spend.

Very good answers but so unnecessary to use the word retarded in her answer. That should be beneath her.

Agree with Ed. The last answer in the NY Slimes post is a must read. LOL.

Why would she want to destroy poor Bill like that? He has no chance of winning a debate with her on a neutral court.

Don’t despise Maher, but he is kind of funny looking. He’s like a caricature of himself, but real.
jeanie on March 9, 2009 at 5:33 PM
Unfortunately, for many so called libertarians, libertarianism simply means legalizing pot and smashing proponents of gay marriage while still supporting a HUGE centralized government. This shouldn’t be surprising given that the left has proudly brandished the title of liberal for quite some time now – even if there policies are anything but.

On some threads a few months ago (feels like decades), large numbers of kids were attacking anything conservative and ripped Ingraham and poor defenseless Coulter every chance they got. They thought The One’s wife was adorable and everyone on Fox was horrible. They packed a lot of great and gross Ann insults. They came at me from all directions. Once or twice, I chased them back to their ipods. Like locusts.
Recently, I checked, the kids are all gone now. Their work is done.
Ann is still scintillating.

Ann Coulter is wonderful. Not because she makes me feel good–but because if I slipped up in her presence, she wouldn’t coddle me, she’d clobber me.
And, Ed:
Perhaps we need to ask the RINOS and Moderates this first. Then we can ask the Liberals.

I was checking my dictionary for the definition of liberal and was amazed to see that favoring more civil liberty has been moved to the 3rd definition and generous (e.g., being generous with other people’s money) is the 1st definition.

And she has no idea what constitutes treason.

Reminds me of a comment in All About Eve. “Margot Channing is a star of the theatre. She made her stage debut at the age of four in Midsummer Night’s Dream, playing a fairy. She entered, quite unexpectedly, stark naked. She has been a star ever since.”

getalife, how is this not funny? Lighten up buddy, Ann is hilarious.
Conservative Voice on March 9, 2009 at 5:45 PM
She is a polarizing figure but I like her “in your face”, unashamed, fearless way of getting her point across. Frankly, a little more of that is needed on the right side and quickly. I relate to her getting her frustrations out because in the dark corners of my mind I know that if I ever met Chris Matthews in person, I’d slap him up one side and then maybe shake his hand.
sherry on March 9, 2009 at 5:45 PM
By the way, her new book (Guilty) is darned good too. I wasn’t sure I’d like it, but as usual it is packed with facts which illustrate what scheming liars and Orwellian propagandists the Dems are.

Love Ann.
She smokes, though, so wouldn’t marry her.
That’d be the only reason I could think of from my side of the aisle…I’m sure she’d find many more reasons not to on her side.
Debate can lead to bipartisanship when one side convinces the other of its shamefully brazen idiocy.
Seriously, debates do create a kind of bipartisanship when it convinces followers of one side to commit to the other. You find Rush/Shawn/nameanyconservativeblowhard listeners admit to the fact they used to be liberally-diseased.
I doubt anyone could beat Ann in a real debate. She tends to make the other side shut up or regurgitate questions.
What we/USA needs now is for these blowhards to back ONE or at most TWO party-leaders with their voice and fund raisers to be the Repub/conservatives leaders nationally, while backing one or two members in the two houses. That would lead to more awareness and coverage.
But you have to have boots on the ground. Monthly CPACs in a different state every month with a CONSISTENT conservative message backed by the blowhards and the commies will blow away like so much dust.
klickink.wordpress.com on March 9, 2009 at 5:50 PM
She’s even funny after the event. I thought Joy Behr’s schtick about her appearance on the View later was one of the funnier moments on Larry King Live. Joy was spitting!
AnninCA on March 9, 2009 at 5:50 PM
That’s good.
chunderroad on March 9, 2009 at 5:50 PM
Coulter rocks.
Civility gets one nowhere with this current generation of communist democrats. We need to stand up and not be apologetic for what we believe. It’s suicide to think the democrats will listen to us if we ask them pretty please. Coulter knows how to deal with the communist scum, tell it like it is.

Ann is fearless. We need fearless unabashed conservatives who don’t retreat into PC Moderationland.
She is UNlike O’Reilly, Hannity, and most of Fox News with the notable exception of Glenn Beck.
Ann takes no prisoners, does not suffer fools AND she’s a hoot.

Chances are “getalife” takes Ann’s comments personally and is very defensive.
darwin on March 9, 2009 at 5:57 PM
Nothing like a little subtle editorializing–those were her books, so the “like” can only be meant as a put-down. The NYT never misses the opportunity to demonstrate why they are losing readers in droves. Soon, all they will be left with is such admirable thinkers as those in the comments section.
