Fullerton Tea Party gets 15,000 protestors

posted at 12:15 pm on March 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

KFI’s John and Ken decided to put a little local star power behind the “tea party” tax protest movement in Southern California, and it succeeded beyond all expectations.  As many as 15,000 protesters descended onto sleepy Fullerton to noisily demand an end to tax hikes in California and the nation:

They’re revolting. Families with children, bikers, seniors, pirates – by the thousands they descended on a Fullerton bar Saturday to join talk show hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of KFI in protesting tax increases recently approved in Sacramento.

Police estimated that some 8,000 people came to the Slidebar Café in downtown Fullerton to listen to a three-hour live broadcast of The John & Ken Show.

Some wore buttons. One man brought a bloody effigy head of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and waved it from the end of a pike, while the crowd joined their hosts in a chant of “Repeal, recall, revolt.”

Others directed their outrage at less personal synechdoche: “Total Recall” laser discs, action hero lunchboxes and other memorabilia from the governor’s Hollywood career, which they piled up and smashed with a sledgehammer.

Later estimates pushed the crowd to almost double that estimate, although crowd estimation is a highly inexact science.  What was clear was that thousands of people took time on Saturday to join the protest, and in an area not terribly amenable to that kind of turnout.  I used to live near there, and the area has narrow streets and terrible parking.  In the last decade or so, Fullerton has revitalized that area as a shopping district, but it’s still more adaptable for coffee shops than political protests.

Nor is it easily served by transportation from around Southern California.  KFI reaches a very wide geographic area in LA, throughout the entire basin, and the only freeway passing close by is the 91 Riverside freeway.  The tea party had to create quite a bottleneck.

Fullerton itself is about as controversial as apple pie, not a hotbed of political subversion by any means.  It’s the anti-Berkeley.Hot Air reader Vayapaso lives near that area, and tried to get close to the protest, to no avail.  The crowds were massive even though by that point they had begun to disperse.  It’s an impressive result in any case, but especially for an event planned in this sleepy burb.

I, Tuco Ramirez, will tell you something. Those politicians think they are better than I am. Where I came from, if one did not want to have to do actual work for a living, one became a politician or a bandit. They chose their way, I chose mine. Mine was harder! I don’t remember for how long, but I tried the political path! I tried, but it was no good! My standards may be low but I do have some standards. Now I am going to tell them something… they became politicians because they are too cowardly to do what I do.

I was suppose to go there. To far and we are having one on the Central Coast soon. I will see video’s of the party. That is awesome!! The People are not happy with being taxed to death.

sheebe on March 8, 2009 at 3:29 PM

I tried to attend, but there were too many other people trying to get in, and I got there late. The SlideBar is about 20 steps from the Amtrak station, and protestors came by the Metrolink-load. I saw tons of people, elderly and families and singles, pouring into the downtown area from parking spots half a mile away, carrying flags and placards and later, after it was all over, chanting!!

It was the most exciting thing I’ve seen in 30 years. It really does remind me of the early anti-war protests in fevah.

And Fullerton is not a sleepy burb any more, Ed. It’s a restaurant/party hub! Come on down to the SlideBar and show your support. Downtown

How the heck do you access PJTV pics, BTW?

And working on Florida.

A couple of years ago I met a woman who had moved from south Florida to central Florida where I live. She told me that the school system, etc. in south Florida was awful and they moved here where things were not as bad.

Now south Florida has long been a haven from retired Yankees. They have been creeping up the coast until my uncle, who used to live about forty-five minutes south of us, told me that his town had become “Yankee-fied.”

In the cases above, the term Yankee is used for those who moved because they wanted to leave their Leftist-created misery behind, but have a cognitive disconnect in failing to realize their Leftist ideas made the situation they hated.

Conservative Yankees are always welcome.

If it should pass, I will go to the polls and watch for illegals. They best not get a ballot or I will say my piece. We are fed up with illegals sucking us dry. You’re welcome.

This reminds me of a post I saw at UrbanGrounds, Texas blog. It was first on Neal Boortz:

A Divorce Letter to American Liberals

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters,

We’ve stuck together since the late 1950s, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know that we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and just will not ever agree on what’s right. So let’s just end it right now while we can do it on friendly terms. We can smile, shake hands, chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and each go our own way.

So here’s a model separation agreement.

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by land mass, each taking a portion. That’s going to be the difficult part, but I’m sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy. Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate taste. We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can have those. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. And since you hate guns and you hate war, we’ll take the firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O’Donnell. But you are going to be responsible for finding a biodiesel vehicle big enough to haul them around.

We’ll keep the capitalism, the greedy corporations, the pharmaceutical companies; we will keep Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have the homeless, the homeboys, the hippies and illegal aliens. We will keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, the greedy CEOS and all of the rednecks. We’ll keep the Bibles and we’ll let you have NBC and Hollywood.

You can be nice to Iran and Palestine and we’ll retain the right to invade and hammer anybody that threatens us. You can have the peaceniks and the war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we will provide them with security. You won’t have to worry about it. We will keep our Judeo-Christian values. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley Maclaine. You can also have the UN, but we will no longer pay the bill.

We will keep the SUVs, the pickup trucks and the oversize luxury cars. You can have the compacts, the subcompacts and every Subaru station wagon you can find. You can give everybody healthcare, if you can find any practicing doctors. We will continue to believe that healthcare is a privilege and not a right. We will keep “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and the national anthem, and I am sure you will be happy to substitute in their place “Imagine.” I’d like to teach the world to sing “Kumbaya” or “We are the world.” We will practice trickle-down economics and you can give trickle-up poverty your best shot. And since it so offends you, we will keep our history, our name and our flag.

Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along other like-minded liberal and conservative patriots. And if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the friendly spirit of parting, I’ll bet you ANWAR which one of us will need whose help in about 15 years.

Sincerely,

John J Wall

Speedwagon82 on March 8, 2009 at 3:36 PM

In a way. Pete Wilson and the aptly (if you know the penal code) Prop 187 drove Latinos to the left. Up to the ’80s, LA County was a moderating counterweight to the heavily leftwing Bay Area. Also, Silicon Valley hardly existed, and it was hardly clear at the beginning of the tech boom that the internet and cyberculture would skew left.

When Democratic governance broke down the first time, leading to the Gray Davis Recall, we looked primed for a Republican resurgence even despite the above disadvantages. Though veteran Republicans like Tom McClintock, John Campbell, and Dan Lungren might have been ready to make a statewide move, Arnold stepped in with his massive name recognition, massive bank account, and his well-rehearsed lines. Conservatives made a Faustian bargain with him, selling their souls in exchange for his relatively easy victory.

To his credit, he walked like a conservative for a couple of years, but when his attempt to re-make the state through ballot propositions blew up in his face, and he learned the power of the government workers’ unions especially, he pulled a reverse Clinton, tacked to the center and then some, and brought himself back from the dead.

If we defeat the tax hikes, maybe he’ll revert to his original platform, and not leave office as the worst, most destructive governor in California history.

Earlier that day I was at work down the street in Anaheim on Harbor Blvd and coming back from lunch I saw a pathetic 50 or so people out protesting the school cuts. Wearing pink and with both pink printed signs by the teacher’s union and home made signs. The were marching down Harbor. One home-made sign read: “Save the TEATHERS!” Yes, apparently teathers are endangered, whatever a THEATHER is. I tried to snap a pic with my phone but I was too far away to be able to read it. Comedy gold that was.

These Tea Parties should just keep getting bigger. The Narcissistic One doesn’t like things that don’t reflect well on him and threaten to reveal the man.

Evidently Obama is getting a tad touchy about people talking about socialism. He thinks if he denies it, people will be fooled.

I just saw this at RedState:

Obama gets defensive about socialist charge

RedState fisks a NYT interview with Obama on Air Force One in which the Times tries to nail Obama down on whether or not he’s a socialist. RedState estimates about 25% of the interview was on this subject and notes that when Obama said, no, he’s not a socialist, the Times asks what’s wrong with saying yes? Obama doesn’t answer the question directly, just drones and lies about his budget.

Obama also laughably says We have delivered on every promise that we’ve made so far.

(He must think the entire country is as dumb as those who voted for him).

The NYT keeps trying but Obama just evades.

Q. Is there one word name for your philosophy? If you’re not a socialist, are you a liberal? Are you progressive? One word?

A. No, I’m not going to engage in that.

This is the NYT transcript, such as it is. They edited it. They can’t even give us the raw data.

Then to show how determined Obama is to deny the charge, he calls the NYT less than 90 minutes after AF1 touched down to say even more:

The President Is on the Line to Follow Up on Socialism

Of course, he blames Bush. Rahm and Axelrod must have told him he needed to get on the line for the talking points.

Newsbusters remembers the love which socialists and communists have for Obama.

Barack Obama is a Fabian socialist. I should know; I was raised by one. My Grandfather worked as a union machinist for Ingersoll Rand during the day. In the evenings he tended bar and read books. After his funeral, I went back home and started working my way through his library, starting with T.W. Arnold’s The Folklore of Capitalism. This was my introduction to the Fabian socialists.

Arnold taught me to question everyone–my president, my priest and my parents. Well, almost everyone. I wasn’t supposed to question the Fabian intellectuals themselves. That’s the Fabian MO, relentless cultural and journalistic attacks on everything that is, and then a hard pitch for the hope of what might be.

That’s Obama’s world.

He’s telling the truth when he says that he doesn’t agree with Bill Ayers’ violent bombing tactics, but it’s a tactical disagreement. Why use dynamite when mass media and community organizing work so much better? Who needs Molotov when you’ve got Saul Alinski?

Its hard to believe that California voted almost always for Republican Presidents before 1988. Is the change solely because of Mexican immigration in the 90s?

Speedwagon82 on March 8, 2009 at 3:36 PM

I think it has more to do with “citizens” becoming “clients”.

ddrintn on March 8, 2009 at 4:52 PM

You can do to them what Dorian said. However, I hope you still believe in the free movement of our citizens.

It’s a dual sword. The states Californians move to love the money they bring, but then some of them bring their wacky liberalism too.

My husband and I have a ten year plan to move out of CA but we’re conservatives..why do the liberals leave to go other places? I thought they were living in their utopia…just dont’ want to pay for it I guess?

CCRWM on March 8, 2009 at 4:54 PM

MB4,

As much as O denies it, it won’t wash. However, the interview does indicate that he at least realizes that he can’t come out into the open.

From the NYT:

Obama’s Interview Aboard Air Force One

The President Is on the Line to Follow Up on Socialism

Calling the NYT to foist more Orwellian lies clarify is just laughable.

When we lived in a NH town on the state line, people were moving in from Taxachusetts to escape the high taxes. The problem was that once they were there they started demanding services for which you have to raise taxes. The logical disconnect is astounding.

Another anecdote: one time my husband was talking with someone who lived in MA. This other guy was saying how great it was that MA had a subsidy for home heating oil. My husband replied that if taxes weren’t so high, then perhaps people could afford to pay for their oil themselves. To which question, the other man had no reply.

resistnet.com go to Ca. site. Also Grass Roots tell about where all parties are being held. They even give maps.

Actually the 95 91 freeway passes by Fulerton, and it is accesible by the AMTRAK. I totally think people are getting it, which is nice.

MB4 Great Article!

Note that article was written 11.3.08

So here is the playbook: The left will identify, freeze, personalize and polarize an industry, probably health care. It will attempt to nationalize one-fifth of the U.S. economy through legislative action. They will focus, as Lenin did, on the “commanding heights” of the economy, not the little guy.

Did anyone else have a problem with the violent aspects of this gathering (destroying things and the bloodied Arnold S)? I understand the frustration but I don’t think it is to our benefit to start acting like liberals. There are better ways to frame our very real message but still keep it classy.

Here’s a question for anyone who attended? Was it really like that as a whole or were those just some sensational pictures?

Fullerton Tea Party gets 15,000 protestors

Now that’s what I’m talking about! Go Fullerton Tea Party! That is how you get change! Fill the streets! Instead of following the advice of these zero’s on conservative talk radio like Rush Limbo who has 23 million listeners to his program. He has 23 million listeners. Sean Hannity has, I think 15 or 17 million listeners. I’m guessing around there.. and all other types of radio talk show hosts like Laura Ingraham and Mark Levin. These radio hosts who have tens of millions of Americans who love him and adore them. Who listen to them for hours on a regular basis every week! Most of whom are conservatives. And they do nothing with all the money and support and the huge following that they have except sign increase their salaries and make more millions for themselves! That’s what they do!! They don’t build a movement like these Americans are doing in this tax protest! They don’t do anything! With all their power and influence they have they don’t build a movement on the ground like these people are doing! These hogs have never built a mass movement. What a joke! That is why I say it’s time to stop listening to these phonies and build an alternative media. There are so many decent God-fearing Americans who listen to conservative talk radio, but unless we build an alternative to these zero’s we will never build a mass movement. Because if we have alternative conservative media and have alternative mass movements that is when we can start to change the country! We need lot’s of people to join us. Now is the time to prepare for the foundation and the framework. Now! So that in future years we won’t ever be put in this situation again.

You got it!! All and all, tens of millions of Americans overwhelmingly conservative listen to these programs on talk radio. All these radio talk show hosts with tens of millions of listeners! Who love them! Who respond to them! Who listen to them for hours on a regular basis every week! And these radio talk show hosts have NEVER built a mass movement! If you can’t use those audiences and you can’t mobilize those audiences to influence them to get them on the streets protesting to take back America. If you can’t do that, that means you’re a paper tiger – you’re a joke. And so we must build a real conservative movement. Rush Limbo, and Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham, and all these other zero’s are not real conservatives. Neither is Fox television. They are all phonies. They are not real conservatives. Average everyday hard-working decent Americans all over this country, who are trying to support their familes, who are trying to make it, they are real conservatives!! We are real conservatives. We need to build a mass movement.

In a way. Pete Wilson and the aptly (if you know the penal code) Prop 187 drove Latinos to the left.

I’m glad someone on this side of the aisle realizes that the GOP shot itself in the foot in Cali being anti-immigration and it’s always why NV and NM might become as reliably blue as CA. Especially when amnesty inevitably comes up after the 2010 midterms.
