Fullerton Tea Party gets 15,000 protestors

posted at 12:15 pm on March 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

KFI’s John and Ken decided to put a little local star power behind the “tea party” tax protest movement in Southern California, and it succeeded beyond all expectations.  As many as 15,000 protesters descended onto sleepy Fullerton to noisily demand an end to tax hikes in California and the nation:

They’re revolting. Families with children, bikers, seniors, pirates – by the thousands they descended on a Fullerton bar Saturday to join talk show hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of KFI in protesting tax increases recently approved in Sacramento.

Police estimated that some 8,000 people came to the Slidebar Café in downtown Fullerton to listen to a three-hour live broadcast of The John & Ken Show.

Some wore buttons. One man brought a bloody effigy head of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and waved it from the end of a pike, while the crowd joined their hosts in a chant of “Repeal, recall, revolt.”

Others directed their outrage at less personal synechdoche: “Total Recall” laser discs, action hero lunchboxes and other memorabilia from the governor’s Hollywood career, which they piled up and smashed with a sledgehammer.

Later estimates pushed the crowd to almost double that estimate, although crowd estimation is a highly inexact science.  What was clear was that thousands of people took time on Saturday to join the protest, and in an area not terribly amenable to that kind of turnout.  I used to live near there, and the area has narrow streets and terrible parking.  In the last decade or so, Fullerton has revitalized that area as a shopping district, but it’s still more adaptable for coffee shops than political protests.

Nor is it easily served by transportation from around Southern California.  KFI reaches a very wide geographic area in LA, throughout the entire basin, and the only freeway passing close by is the 91 Riverside freeway.  The tea party had to create quite a bottleneck.

Fullerton itself is about as controversial as apple pie, not a hotbed of political subversion by any means.  It’s the anti-Berkeley.Hot Air reader Vayapaso lives near that area, and tried to get close to the protest, to no avail.  The crowds were massive even though by that point they had begun to disperse.  It’s an impressive result in any case, but especially for an event planned in this sleepy burb.

If the majority of people protesting were liberals, it would mean good things. That they would votefor non-RINO Republicans. But if they are right leaning to begin with, isn’t it more likely they will just go libertarian or some other third party?

At some point, it’s incumbent upon the public to step up and force these bums out of office. If it takes an everyday ordinary citizen running against them, so be it. If I recall correctly, that’s how a certain Alaskan governor started her political career.

These tea parties are a great start. But Californians need to look in the mirror and realize that handing control of their state over to one party is what led them into this mess to begin with.

Speedwagon82 on March 8, 2009 at 1:20 PM

Fixed that for ya. He was an outrageous liar. He was elected by John and Ken and their followers on a platform of low taxes / small government. Arnuld tried once to get his conservative agenda passed by popular initiative. He found it made him unpopular among the teacher’s union and the other liberals. So, he abandoned conservatism, became a big spending liberal, and even hired a Dem to be his chief of staff — and the Dems in CA are f’in socialist more than in DC. The betrayal by Arnuld knows no bounds.

I agree with katy about this April 15. Obama will continue to draft through the end of March because most of American will preoccupy itself carnivals and circuses (the NCAA tourney, which I confess that I love). But in early April, Obama will skip out of the country to Turkey just as Americans are receiving their March 31 (quarterly or monthly) statements for IRAs, 401ks, and other equity-market investments. And then they’ll be filing returns amd, perhaps, paying income taxes or estimated income taxes to a government that’s botching everything.

I think Obama’s popularity really starts tanking in mid-April–especially if he continues to concentrate on nonsense while picking his nose on banking.

ITs already started with me. The State of Ohip went back two years ago with my tax return and removed a deduction I had for a loan repayment. They said they overpayed me in a tax return.

I now have to go back two years and show that my tax deduction was valid. (Which it was. They simply deleted it without cause).

Also I got a nice nasty surprize on my utility bill last month. I got a $107 dollar Electric bill (higher due to winter weather.). Tacked on was a “enviromental” tax of 2.60 per Kilo hour of use. (totaling another $60 dollars on to my bill “For the enviroment).

It is just beginning.

The taxes in CA are hitting EVERYONE. Car registration is doubled, sales tax up %14, and my personal favorite a %5 surcharge on the income tax I already paid as a ‘processing fee’.

California is what happens when liberals run basically unopposed in the legislature. It’s a microcosm of where this country is headed now that it’s being run the same.

It is an illusion that California is a blue state. It is, and has been, horribly gerrymandered by the Democrats for the last 40 years to appear that way. Romeo13 on March 8, 2009 at 2:28 PM

I was at the Fullerton protest yesterday. Most of the anger was directed at Gov. Schwarzenegger and the quisling Republican caucus in our state legislature, but there was also visible anti-government sentiment directed at Obama’s socialist agenda, the corporate bailouts and the mortgage bailouts. What I thought was really interesting is that for the most part, the crowd was not composed of the usual cast of unemployed malcontents. They were mostly middle class types who probably don’t make a habit of showing up at political protests, and they were pissed.

I’d love to see this grow into a groundswell that will run a lot of politicians out of their comfy sinecures.

Cicero43 on March 8, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Nice start!

I suggest we have nationwide day of Tea Parties on Labor Day. It is a fitting day, people have the day off and it gives us enough time to begin to organize large demonstrations/parties, get the word out and perhaps get some media coverage and line up speakers, blogging from various locations, radio broadcasts etc…

I think if we start to develop a real fire, some of our representatives may decide to stop carrying water for Pelosi and the Reader of The Free World.

moxie_neanderthal on March 8, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Romeo13 on March 8, 2009 at 2:28 PM

California doesnt have a true Republican party, it has a bunch of Democrats that run as Republicans because fooling the Rebublican voters into thinking they are Republicans is the only way they can get elected. San Diego’s Mayor Jerry Sander and Governor True Lies are perfect examples of this.

doriangrey on March 8, 2009 at 2:33 PM

The purpose is to vote down Prop 1A on May 19 because it’s a two-year tax extension,” said Kobylt. “The purpose is to tell people how their Republican legislators lie about their votes. The purpose is to get support to recall Schwarzennegger, (Assemblyman) Anthony Adams, (Assemblyman) Jeff Miller, and everybody else.”

Most urgent for now – vote down Prop 1A. The liberal charlatans in the CA assembly even broke the law when they didn’t even note in the materials that this is a continued tax for 2 more years. The son of the famous/infamous CA Prop 13 has filed a law suit and a liberal judge ruled to keep it “as is” because some page…18…explains it. How many people read page 18?

Thos of you expecting the LAT to write about this, the only thing they’ll do is belittle John and Ken, at best.

John and Ken helped Arnold to win and they’ll help to destroy him.

Arnold ist ein grosses Arschloch!!!

John and Ken are not Republicans. They are either apolitical or Libertarian.

Those who think that the crowds consisted of Republican only are simply insane, or mental midgets.

Dorian is absolutely right on the gerymandering, whic will now end. Among the crapy and deceiving deal all the Republicans in the assembly and the senate made with Arnuld, this is the only good thing which Maldonado negotiated for, to the disgust of both parties. As is now, the liberals and the conservatives never lose a single seat, no matter how disgusted we are with them.

Yes, Metrolink was used heavily, and buses went from San Diego to Fullerton. In addition, many people came from out of state. There were folks there visiting for business or privately and happy to participate in this historic event. It will be talked about for many, many years, and is just the beginning.

As California goes, so goes the nation. Those of you on the right, or on the left, who underestimate John and Ken, do so out of sheer naïveté. They don’t care who’s head is on a stick, nor which ars is being roasted on a hot plate. They truly look out for us.

My drive home is mostly a delight due to these two courageous dudes. I love them because they are equal opportunity hypocricy slayers. You go J & K, you go California, and you go America. We’re not dead, yet. The looters, moochers, and the ones who fool and exploit us, have been put on notice.

Gnats and gadflies, you are not even remotely significant.

In case you have not noticed the MSM propaganda machine has pretty much emasculated (in more ways then one ifyouknowwhatImean). If the MSM covering these protests was the be all and end all they would not be drawing the ever increasing crowds they are. The majority of people in the US do not get their news and information from the MSM anymore. Rush draws more listeners daily then ABC/NBC/CBS’s nightly newscasts do combined and when you take into account Hannity, Levine, Beck and the rest they have more listeners on a daily basis then the entire MSM has readers/viewers. Fox gets 3 times more viewers then Corruptocrat propaganda channels CNN and MSNBC and their ratings are skyrocketing. I won’t even get into the internet page views, the Corruptocrat sponsored websites may seem to get more traffic but that is an illusion. The moonbats love their Volkische Beobacter wanna be echo chambers like Kos or PuffHo and only visit them whereas people like me may view 30+ blogs a day from national/international ones to local/specialized to commentary/opinion ones.

That is why the Corruptocrats are so desperate to install their “fairness doctrine” because their MSM allies no longer are the gatekeepers of information and they need them to be so they can install their full Marxist totalitarian agenda.

Here is the problem with this article below from top of the headlines. And I read the post right here on this Blog- that stated, Obama said, don’t expect a lurch to the Left that he was going to Govern from the Center. So this article is going back to his campaign promises, and ignores what he stated after he was elected. So one way or another Obama lied depending on the person’s political ideology, they can decide which lie they want to buy. Or if you are an Obama Cultist, start with the Apologist Posturing Now. Obama can’t be everything to all people, he leaves himself intentionally vague to be projected upon. That isn’t Leadership that is Political Gamesmanship.

Arnold, repealing the car tax, as soon as he won. Now, it’s back, the hypocritical pig that he is.

We had a little over 700 at Overland Park KS, two weeks ago, I’m sure it would have been more if it hadn’t been 20 degrees and windy out.

Speaking of Obama and Taxes.

There is this lovely Photos of Bush Morphing into Obama.

Wife & I were among the 15,000 yesterday. The line backed up through Harbor Drive; to the offramp, onto 91 fwy in both directions.

Local NBC affiliate gate it roughly 20 seconds of reporting. No interviews, no explanation. Had it been a protest of 20 illegals, well, it would have lead.

True the majority was directed toward the Gov. I think that was out of a sense of betrayal by the KFI guys since they spearheaded the recall that brought Arnold to power. The feeling of a backstab was palatable.

The second level of wrath was toward republican legistlators who signed a “no new tax” pledge and then betrayed that. The third level of wrath was against prop 1A which will extend this tax 2 more years.

I understand (though have not personally verified) that some of the Republican representatives have removed all contact information from their websites – thus opening up the “taxation without representation” issue.

One peculiar thing, among so many here, in CA, is that the teachres’ union is currently running ads against cuts. If they are so strapped for money, how come they have funds to finance the ads, especially with our taxes. I hate them with a raging passion.

If the President keeps going in his current direction, that will become very hard to continue to assert, sadly enough.

Machiavelli said “a man will forgive the loss of his father sooner than the loss of his patrimony.” In America, the free market system and citizenship in the greatest country in the world is our patrimony. The stock market represents the patrimony of millions upon millions.

At this rate, there are going to be far too many people around with nothing left to lose.

This movement did not start in California.

On a personal note…

I am really sick of all the arrogant Californians who have moved here. They let California be destroyed by the Marxists and the Corruptocrats. Instead of staying and cleaning up the mess they created they are leaving in droves and they are not leaving their “California values” cargo cult at the California border when they do.

If I hear “that isn’t the way we did it in California” one more time out of one of these idiots…Well, I will have to try to restrain myself…

Sorry, but no one in Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Montana, Texas, Tennessee or the Carolinas want you around. We have seen what you have done to formerly nice, decent places to live like Oregon and Washington state. It ain’t pretty.

PS-The same can be said for the people from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota that are running away from the mess they created. Yankees go home!

Patriots are always a small group and all politicians are pandering cowards.
June 16 and the 4Th of July just go to DC and occupy the Capitol.Clog the streets, same with all the state capitols. If in session suit up and show up.Beggers will want you to go home, hell if the bank has you home then the capitols belong to you.Remember “keep off the grass.”

Ryan Gandy on March 8, 2009 at 2:59 PM

You muste get more informed. If Maldonado would not have caved, they could have never passed the tax increase, since they legally need 60 votes.

Plus, what John and Ken exposed is that the Republicans were all in on the tax increase, but put up about 6 stooges, in more liberal districts, and who’re not close to being termed out, to vote for it.

Not a single one of the Republicans in the assembly or the senate are coming on the John and Ken show these days, whenas they showed up regularly during their runs, promising “no new taxes”, the Schweine that they are.

All are faulty, the liberals for all the obvious reasons, the conservatives for being the true hypocrits, and Arnold for being the liar and hypocrite in chief.

All their heads need to roll.

p.s. for the getalifers, I mean that ficticiously, not literally.

Those fools arent actually from California, their just the Marxist tools who moved here from somewhere else and ruined California and like loccus have moved on to greener pastures to ruin them. So next time you see one that says that to you, please for the love of all that is holy, dont restrain yourself.

California truly is a microcosm of the rest of the country. Looking at the way its voters have gone for the past few elections, county wise, there are way more red than blue. The reason these states go blue is because of the concentration of population in the larger cities tend to be Democratic.

This happened in Nevada in the last election. Clark county with nearly 2 million people, by far the vast majority of Nevada’s population, voted Democratic enough to turn the state blue.

In times of change, the Patriot is a scarce man; brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot.

Eventually a “party” in front of a few of the MSM corporate centers with slogans like… “Ignore This”, and “Report the Truth” might also be in order… But, taxes and spending first works fine now. You always cut the tightest noose first.

I live in LA and another sign of people being fed up is that Prop B the Solar initiative that was pushed heavily by all politicians especially the mayor was defeated…narrowly …but it was… Arnold did betray us. We don’t need more taxes we need less spending. But he said oh we have to raise taxes and tried to tell us this was a great and historic budget the day it passed! I have mentioned the High School we built in downtown LA for $350 million… it’s for the children of illegal immigrants …you will not see one caucasian kid… we have illegal immigrants that have their kids at our hospitals and they don’t a pay a dime and then all the entitlements… it’s ridiculous… so a lot of us are mad…the spending has got to go down…we need to stop this madness of giving people who don’t pay taxes (they get paid under the table) every f’n benefit a legit citizen pays for!
