Hillary competes with Geithner for competence nadir
posted at 9:16 am on March 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
What Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner does for the markets, Hillary Clinton does for diplomacy. Maybe Hillary should have kept the “overcharge” button instead of giving it to Sergei Lavrov, since whatever she’s getting paid as Secretary of State outstrips her value. Even Reuters can’t hide the embarrassment of Hillary On Parade.
Forget the fact that State can’t translate Russian. Hillary doesn’t understand history. She dropped this little gem on the European Parliament:
“I have never understood multiparty democracy.
“It is hard enough with two parties to come to any resolution, and I say this very respectfully, because I feel the same way about our own democracy, which has been around a lot longer than European democracy.”
The Greeks might beg to differ, and they’d have a point — since they invented the term democracy more than two thousand years ago. The Dutch had a republic before we did. And do diplomats regularly go to other countries to disparage the political systems of their hosts? In other words, Hillary managed to screw up history while insulting the Europeans on her first visit as our official top diplomat.
And how difficult is it to understand multiparty democracy, anyway? We have one on our northern border, for Pete’s sake, and they’ve been doing pretty well for as long as we have. I thought Hillary was supposed to be experienced at foreign affairs.
But Hillary wasn’t finished. Someone needs to get her some flashcards, stat:
One working lunch later with EU leaders, Clinton raised more eyebrows when she referred to EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, who stood beside her, as “High Representative Solano.”
She also dubbed European Commission External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner as “Benito.”
I’ve been calling the Obama administration “amateur hour”, but that’s too kind. It’s the Gong Show, only with the media as the panelists, we keep seeing 10s instead of mallets hitting the gong. At least the Gong Show had a sick, train-wreck entertainment quality along with its embarrassing incompetence, and it was blessedly over in 30 minutes.

The bizzaro world view of all this is that she honestly thinks that we need to undo Bush diplomacy. Do you suppose maybe that he knew what he was doing? On his last tour of Europe as prez, he was warmly received.

“amateur hour” Seems to be the case. But, his inexperience was hammered home more times than are countable during the campaign and it never took. He does have a partial out here though and refuses to take it. He could enlist the help of clever, experienced people and then leave them alone to do their jobs without his ugly politics and power first mantra continually getting in the way and preventing or destroying any progress. He could put a leash on his principal spoiler, Emmanuel, but does not have enough sense or expertise to do it. He could limit the damage being done by Pelosi/Reid and company but doesn’t do that either. Is he really that into self-destruction?

Now, now! Remember, this is “The smartest woman in the world” according to the MSM. Not only does she not understand history – she doesn’t understand the Constitution. We are not a democracy – the United States is a representative republic. (…and to the Republic, for which it stands…) .
The truth is the people in the Democrat Party really do want a democracy – and the mob rule that goes along with it.
I really thought no one could be worse than Jimmy Carter in my life time. Boy, was I wrong on that score..

<blockquotParliament President Hans-Gert Poettering was effusive in his praise, saying that with the new administration, the United States and Europe once again “share the same values.”
“What you said mostly could have been said by a European,” he told Clinton after she fielded questions ranging from climate change to energy security and aid to Africa and one on gay rights from a participant wearing an “I love Hillary” t-shirt.

MaiDee on March 7, 2009 at 9:35 AM
Just because you’re “just saying” doesn’t make it any less moronic. Hillary is the top diplomat of our country. I don’t care how tired she is – the position demands, at a minimum, that she get the names right, that she has an understanding of history, and that she can delegate to the right person mundane matters such as translation.
And I’m very interested to hear about this healthy sense of humor that we lack and that the left and the media have displayed over the last 8 years.
CarolynM on March 7, 2009 at 9:35 AM
Can you imagine the headlines had Bush and company made these exact same gaffes? The “button” and cheap gifts would have been front page news on the NYT. Jay Leno and David Letterman would have had a field day.

I thought so also. It looked like she was going to keep her distance and stay away from the fray a little bit to earn her creds. A perfect scenario for her to pop up again as candidate in 2012 – as the sensible reliable one. But I guess she is on her way to blowing that cover.

Well, I hope I would have realized that I needed a little more seasoning before I agreed to take the job…which statement applies equally to Obama and Hillary. Clinton’s so called and much touted foreign policy expertise before she took the job was really just smoke and mirrors. o’s did not even reach the level of smoke and mirrors. However, if I were asked to place a bet on which of those two will survive and grow from bad experiences, I’ve got to go with Hillary.

Indeed. Obsessing over this Administration’s little mistakes – like the destruction of hundreds of billions of dollars of market wealth, elevating a parade of tax cheats to top office after dropping a trillion dollars in new taxes on the next generation, or appointing a top diplomat who can’t go two hours without insulting everyone within earshot – is so inappropriate, when we should be celebrating their triumphs. Oh, wait, those are their triumphs.
I feel a little embarrassed for the Right, now that you’ve called us out on our petty vindictiveness. After all, who can forget the grace and energetic support the Left showed Obama’s Republican predecessor, in the early days of his administration? Those were magical times, in which every liberal politician and commentator rushed to their microphones and word processors to wish the new President the best after a difficult election, and vowed to help him succeed at his agenda now that he was finally in the White House. And here we are, churlishly pointing out Obama seems to have the economic acumen of a third-grader raised by a hippie chick and a union boss, or that his Secretary of State thinks diplomacy is a four-year victory lap around the world to collect laurels and applause!
It’s especially unkind of us to attack Obama this way, since his campaign and presidency were all about honoring his political opponents and respecting their constituencies. The man spent twenty years of his life in church, for heaven’s sake, learning to love his neighbor and look for the best in people! And his campaign was so honest and informative. I loved those town meetings he would do, where he’d engage in spirited debate with his Republican opponent, and produce carefully researched charts showing how much he planned to spend in office, and how much each American would pay in increased taxes to fund his agenda. And I remember how attentive he was to the needs of the elderly, especially his senile old opponent who couldn’t send e-mail, and how he took a little time from his busy schedule to explain the Marxist dialectic to an Ohio plumber. And remember how he bravely risked angering the Left by making it clear he would keep almost all of George Bush’s wartime policies in place once he got into office, because they were common-sense and effective, while the Left’s criticisms of them were childish and insane?
I love how he spends every day singing the praises of the American doctor, businessman, and taxpayer – the people who make this country work. I love how he’s focused like a laser beam on getting the economy moving forward again, and not wasting his time doing ridiculously counterproductive things, like trying to nationalize health care, passing economy-destroying restrictions on energy production to please radical environmentalists, or tossing business-killing sops to his union supporters. The President could have seized this moment of unprecedented political power and tried to ram some lunatic liberal wish-list of pork and statism down the voters’ throats, while they were too panicked and confused to resist. But, instead, he works every day to improve the business environment and address the economy as his top priority: announcing tax reductions for businesses, scaling back government regulations, reducing the deficit, and slashing wasteful government spending to move resources back into the private sector. He’s been tireless in hunting down and prosecuting corrupt government officials like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, respecting his duty to safeguard the public treasury by making sure the people who caused the Fannie Mae crisis can’t get anywhere near the financial system, ever again. He’s been a tireless champion of free speech, encouraging robust debate and thoughtfully engaging the criticisms of private citizens who have the media platform and speaking skill to voice them. It’s not as if he’s tried to stifle dissent or insinuated that disagreeing with him is seditious, for God’s sake!
And all we do is sit here and attack. You’ve done us a valuable service by pointing out the error of our ways, you sly little genius you. We should spend whatever remaining time this blog is still legal to sing the praises of our Dear Leader. Perhaps Allahpundit could begin posting a Special Fact About Obama every day, and we could use the comments thread to suggest wonderful new things he could use for upcoming posts. One of Obama’s political heroes once remarked that capitalists would sell the rope that would be used to hang them, but we can do better than that. We can be cheerful about it, and tie the nooses ourselves.
