Chas Freeman: 9/11 our fault, and the Israelis’

posted at 1:54 pm on March 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Talk about a failure in vetting!  Dennis Blair’s choice to head the National Intelligence Council and to create the critical NIEs that guide our security policies looks worse by the day.  Martin Kramer gives his analysis of Freeman and finds a Saudi apologist — and a card-carrying member of the Blame America crowd:

How important has resentment of Israel been to Al Qaeda’s terrorism? Here is one side of the argument, by an American who knows Saudi Arabia well:

The heart of the poison is the Israel-Palestinian conundrum. When I was in Saudi Arabia, I was told by Saudi friends that on Saudi TV there were three terrorists who came out and spoke. Essentially the story they told was that they had been recruited to fight for the Palestinians against the Israelis, but that once in the training camp, their trainers gradually shifted their focus away from the Israelis to the monarchy in Saudi Arabia and to the United States. So the recruitment of terrorists has a great deal to do with the animus that arises from that continuing and worsening situation.

And here is the opposing view, by an American who knows the Kingdom equally well:

Mr. bin Laden’s principal point, in pursuing this campaign of violence against the United States, has nothing to do with Israel. It has to do with the American military presence in Saudi Arabia, in connection with the Iran-Iraq issue. No doubt the question of American relations with Israel adds to the emotional heat of his opposition and adds to his appeal in the region. But this is not his main point.

So now you’ve heard two sides of the debate. Who made the first statement? Charles “Chas” Freeman, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and the Obama administration’s nominee to head the National Intelligence Council (NIC). Who made the second statement? Charles “Chas” Freeman, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and the Obama administration’s nominee to head the National Intelligence Council (NIC).

But that’s only the start of it.  Kramer notes that Freeman has a particular point of view on the cause of 9/11, too.  In a 2005 roundtable discussion hosted by his Middle East Policy Council (which included Professor Juan Cole), Freeman came up with yet another explanation of the attack that killed 3,000 Americans:

MR. FREEMAN: On the question of U.S. strikes on targets on Iran or elsewhere, I simply want to register what I think is an obvious point; namely that what 9/11 showed is that if we bomb people, they bomb back.

Uh, what?  Starting in 1993, al-Qaeda conducted a series of attacks on American targets, including the World Trade Center, Khobar Towers, two American embassies in Africa, and the USS Cole.  We didn’t attempt to bomb them until 1998, when we missed them entirely, thanks to a collapse in operational security.  We didn’t bomb the Saudis or Yemenis at any point, the two nationalities to which Osama bin Laden can lay claim, or Egypt, where Ayman al-Zawahiri was born.

And it gets better:

In 2006, Freeman finally went the extra mile, offering this explanation for 9/11:

We have paid heavily and often in treasure for our unflinching support and unstinting subsidies of Israel’s approach to managing its relations with the Arabs. Five years ago, we began to pay with the blood of our citizens here at home.

So it’s our fault, not for bombing people, but for allying ourselves with a Western-style democracy which may not be perfect but far surpasses anything else in the region.  Does Saudi Arabia offer more freedom and liberty to its people than Israel?  Jordan?  Egypt?  Syria?  Iran?

The central fallacy behind this thinking is that al-Qaeda is some kind of liberation movement.  It’s not, and neither is Hamas or Hezbollah.  These are terrorist organizations looking to impose a brutal oppression on people by the imposition of shari’a over the entirety of southwest Asia, and later the entire world.

We can’t have anyone this clueless in charge of our intelligence analyses.  The Senate needs to tell Barack Obama in no uncertain terms to dump Chas Freeman, and fast.

Chas Freeman Redux: “When Idiots Attack”

Robert Dreyfuss – Wed Mar 4, 3:55 pm

The appointment of Chas Freeman as chairman of the National Intelligence Council is a done deal, and it’s probably the single best appointment that Obama has made to date. But small-minded critics are out for blood. And now John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and other Republicans on the Hill are demanding Freeman’s head.

The critic with the smallest mind, I’d say, is Jonathan Chait, a rabid, pro-Zionist hawk and supporter of the war in Iraq, who wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post this week called “Obama’s Intelligence Blunder.” Chait, who knows squat about intelligence, had the temerity to call Freeman a “fanatic.” As in:

Freeman was attacked by pro-Israel activists, but the contretemps over Freeman’s view of Israel misses the broader problem, which is that he’s an ideological fanatic.

By “fanatic,” Chait meant that Freeman is a “realist,” which is sort of like calling someone a fanatical moderate. Listen to Chait’s “reasoning”:

We can’t say we did not try to warn the American people, but the Obama camp played them like a fiddle. The old dude that ran against Obama also seemed to pluck a few fiddle strings for Obama while undercutting any negative thing our side said about him. Palin was the only one with enough balls to point out what was coming at that level.

Mr. Freeman, let me put this as delicately as possible:

Problem with vetting? A guy who is anti-isreal, a truther and believes that government should squash protesters with force, like china did but only harder – this is exactly what President Jerkoff wants. BHO believes that if and when a protest/revolution pops up to stop his government from destroying the USA, it will need to be crushed and damn the rights of the people.

Everyday this seems more deliberate than incompetent. And that is making me nervous.

katy,
this is just the previews.

rob verdi on March 7, 2009 at 2:21 PM

As much of a problem as I might have with the other statements, the first pair of statements is not contradictory; in fact, it is quite illuminating. Recruited extremists are drawn in using bait-and-switch; while bin Laden doesn’t have the Palestinian cause as a primary motivation, he knows that others do, so he gives it lip service. Then he calls for attacks against America for our presence in the Middle East. It’s a fairly common theme: Folks are drawn in because of what their culture tells them to despise — Jews in Israel, Indian control of Kashmir, a secular Afghan government, a Shiite Iraqi government, dictatorship in Egypt or Saudi Arabia — and then turned to whatever the real goals of the terror group happens to be — Hindus in India, Jews anywhere, Americans in Iraq, other American targets, American allies, etc. I think the head of the National Intelligence Council should understand this. It’s not a contradiction.

The rest, though, gives me pause….

calbear on March 7, 2009 at 2:21 PM

And this “failure” surprises you…why?

Check the Hebrew prophet Ezekiel, (among others) who wrote that in the last days the “whole world” would unite and attack Jerusalem. Until Obambam took over, the Jews could depend on the U.S. Now, the “whole world” can go lookin’ for some Jews to kill, ’cause Uncle Stupid has FINALLY SEEN THE LIGHT!

oldleprechaun on March 7, 2009 at 2:22 PM

The head of the NIC should understand that it is not a contradiction, but it would be nice if he were also aware that eliminating Isreal would not eliminate that tactic, just force Al-Queda to find another bug-a-boo as the source of their bait and switch.

Bishop on March 7, 2009 at 2:02 PM

In ordinary times — say, when a Clinton or someone of his type is our Dem president — I would agree with you.

But I don’t think this is a time to be looking at possible political gains in three years. These people — Freeman, Osama Obama, Hildebeest, et. al. — think pretty much alike, and what they think portends some major disasters for this nation, and for Israel.

I don’t know how we can generate a movement that would result in the child-president’s removal from office, but it’s what needs to be done before Obama’s real “Czars,” hate-filled types such as Ayers and Wright, are put into position to increase the peril to our country even more.

MrScribbler on March 7, 2009 at 2:34 PM

I sen this in as a tip several days ago but never saw it posted here. 9/11 isn’t his only major issue:

Freeman’s soft spot for dictatorships

On May 26, 2006, Chas Freeman sent an e-mail to a confidential listserv called ChinaSec. The subject under discussion was the Tiananmen Square massacre, the 1989 Chinese government crackdown on peaceful democracy demonstrators. Sounding like a hard-line Chinese Communist Party flack, he referred to the young activists as constituting a “mob scene,” termed their appeals for liberalization “propaganda,” mocked the “goddess of democracy” they had erected in honor of the Statue of Liberty and deemed the government’s response — which resulted in over 2,500 deaths — “overly cautious.”

Savor that last line for a minute, and call to mind the indelible image from Tiananmen Square of the anonymous man standing in front of a line of tanks. In light of Freeman’s criticism of the Chinese regime’s “ill-conceived restraint,” one cannot escape the conclusion that he would have preferred that the episode had ended with the man being flattened, the vivification of George Orwell’s aphorism that totalitarianism is a “boot stomping on a human face.”

This missive became sadly relevant last week when Dennis Blair, the director of national intelligence, announced that Freeman would serve as chairman of the National Intelligence Council

I don’t know either so I think the only solution will be a Congress controlled by the GOP. I mean the Hose and the Senate and the support of the military too.

clemycali on March 7, 2009 at 2:36 PM

I’ll be brief. This administration is a joke. Bush had a lot of poor to mediocre people that hurt his administration but they look a lot better now after seeing the clowns that BO has picked. Must have fallen through the cracks here.

Here’s a little more for those who don’t want to click on the link:

The Chinese Communists are not the only authoritarians for whom Freeman seems to have a soft spot. From 1989 to 1992, he served as ambassador to Saudi Arabia, where he developed an affinity for the monarchs who run the kingdom as their own personal fiefdom….

In 1997, he became president of the Middle East Policy Council, a Saudi-funded think tank in Washington. There, he bragged about publishing an “unabridged” version of “The Israel Lobby” by professors Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, which purports to expose the Jewish state’s nefarious power and the dual loyalties of Jewish government officials, journalists and political activists….

But what’s been most telling about the Freeman appointment has been the response — or lack thereof — from liberals….The mix of silence and pleasure that has characterized American liberal reaction to the Freeman appointment is but the latest, sad episode in the decline of the American left’s anti-totalitarianism and international solidarity.
