Why the Aussies could have predicted Geithner’s incompetence

posted at 5:12 pm on March 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when the Obama administration and its allies in Congress urged the confirmation of Tim Geithner despite his tax problems?  They claimed that Geithner was “uniquely qualified” to lead the nation out of an economic collapse, and that no other candidate could possibly replace Geithner.  Former Australian prime minister Paul Keating must have thought the Democrats and American media had discovered a completely different Tim Geithner than the one he knew:

If anyone in the US media had thought to ask a former Australian prime minister for his assessment, they would have heard a different view. And they would not have been so surprised at Geithner’s performance since.

In a speech to a closed gathering at the Lowy Institute in Sydney on Thursday, Paul Keating gave a starkly different account of Geithner’s record in handling the Asian crisis: “Tim Geithner was the Treasury line officer who wrote the IMF [International Monetary Fund] program for Indonesia in 1997-98, which was to apply current account solutions to a capital account crisis.”

In other words, Geithner fundamentally misdiagnosed the problem. And his misdiagnosis led to a dreadfully wrong prescription.

In fact, Geithner bungled the job so badly that Asian nations still refuse to “stick their head in the IMF noose,” as Keating puts it.  Despite 7% compound growth over several years afterwards, Indonesia still couldn’t get itself out of the hole Geithner dug for them.  Soeharto lost power, and countries like China paid attention.  Instead of working more cooperatively, China built up big reserves instead, creating a debt imbalance that helped make the current financial crisis much worse than it might have been.

Geithner’s performance since his confirmation hasn’t surprised Keating at all.  The dithering on bank issues has left the US with few realistic options outside of nationalization on some scale.  The vacillation and fumbled rollouts of economic policy have left the markets with no confidence at all in his leadership, leading to a flight from capital investment clearly shown in the stock market performance of the last few weeks.  Keating understands that lack of confidence from his own experiences with Geithner, but the US has just begun to figure out Geithner’s incompetence.

That sound you hear from down under?  Laughter at the gullibility of Congress and the media in buying the argument that a man who couldn’t figure out his own taxes had the only qualifications for handling American economic policy.  Our mainstream media never reported on this botch-up until it was far too late to do anything about it.

Update: Jen Rubin apologizes to Geithner for not realizing he was a boob instead of a cheat.

Great article Ed. Never heard a whisper of that before. But surely they never “bought” the argument–they created it. The American people largely “bought it.”

JiangxiDad on March 6, 2009 at 5:15 PM

I wrote a research paper during the Asian financial crisis with a focus on the role of the IMF. My very basic research revealed IMF screw-up after screw-up.

The IMF has since faded in importance–but this new financial crisis is giving the IMF new undeserved importance. There is an article in today’s WSJ about it.

Not good.

The IMF, much like the UN, long ago out-grew it’s initial focus and is now a half-way house for incompetent bureaucrats with over-sized egos.

He’s applying a current account solution to a capital account problem again.

So not only does he have a track record of never learning (as in failing to pay his taxes twice for the same thing, and diagnosing the wrong illness when presented with similar symptoms), but he’s also too stupid or obtuse to learn.

This obama administration will go down in history as the most corrupt and incompetent in US history. It really is starting to look not like a US government, but more like some African pseudo-nation. Even the president’s name hints at something from the Congo. Soon he will be showing up in public in a military uniform adorned with epaulets and medals and wearing dark sun glasses while holding a baton.

Actually, this is not far from the truth. Here obama is in Africa with another despot, Odinga.

We have a Vice-President who can’t count to 4, asks wheelchair bound people to stand up and lives in some type of wacko fantasy world where FDR is on televison.

We have a Treasury Secretary who can’t figure out TurboTax and who destroys every economy he touches.

We have a Secreterary of State who mangles the names of every foreign diginitary and tells her Russian counterpart to press a button that says “overcharge”.

You wanna know the real reason Obama picked Timothy Geithner?

Barack Obama – Born Aug 4, 1961
Timothy Geithner – Born Aug 18, 1961

Timothy Geithner’s one great qualification is that he is younger than Barack Obama.

In fact, four Cabinet Secretaries are younger than our very young President. So are the Administrator of the EPA, the Director of the OMB, and our Ambassador to the UN.

My sister was named a Assistant Deputy Treasurer to the State of Michigan at a ridiculously young age in the administration of Governor Jim Blanchard (AKA The Boy Gov). Blanchard was elected Governor of Michigan at the age of 41, and insisted that head of the various departments of state government be younger than he was. These department heads then went out and selected deputies that were even younger than they were. So my sister, at the age of 32, was entrusted with a very high-profile job, because she was the one person in the state who met the qualifications and was younger than her boss.

I would wager that the pool of qualified applicants for Deputy Tresurer of the United States who happen to be born after August 18, 1961 is pretty small. No wonder they are having such a hard time filling those 17 deputy positions at Treasury…

They won’t be able to get to a tenth of their agenda because they don’t know what they’re doing. And if Obama thought he could rely on Congress to do the nuts and bolts work, this only shows how incompetent he is at recognizing the grand incompetence of Pelosi and Reid.

It’s time to strike back, not try to negotiate. Even the mild John McCain sees what’s going on. then appoint 535 Regular citizens from all walks of life
and we could put together a funtional government in less than 30 days..

So lets think about this ..
they keep electing fraudsters , tax cheats, homosexuals
perverts, drunkards, murderers (albient never convicted) to the halls of congress and we have a God damn MESS

If we either deported all of them or worse if we had to
Shot all of them..
and then for 30 days elected 535 non party members to congress (we would end up with a government)
By the people and for the people..

Sounds exactly like what our forefathers had in mind..

I say its time to CLEAN House..
All three of them
the senate
the house of representatives
the white house..

Oh and also BAN all the media EXCEPT for FOX news..
since they are the only ones who actually TRIED to tell the truth

Incompetence on trillions of our forced tax dollars.

No More Taxation Tyranny By Representation.

Incompetent or purposefully destructive?

\
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that not only did Geitner purposefully screw up Asia, but congressional Dems & Fannie/Freddie purposefully screwed up our real estate market & subsequently the entire economy.
Now they have a crisis to take advantage of.

Look at the history of the “mark-to-market” rule and its role in popping the real estate/credit bubble.

Emperor Obama and General Wrong-way Geithner are doing a financial version replay of WWI. In WWI million of troops were sent into a meat grinder and killed with little, if any, advancement in battlefield position achieved. Now Emperor Obama and General Wrong-way Geithner are sending billions of dollars into a pork grinder/Black Hole with little, if any, advancement in the economy being made.

History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.

The chattering classes are starting to wonder if Geithner should be fired. Like this:

We don’t mean to sound impatient, but we’ve seen enough. The country is in the middle of the worst financial crisis in 75 years, and the second-most-important person in charge clearly isn’t the right man for the job.

When both engines on US Air Flight 1549 quit after takeoff, Capt. Sullenberger did not cling stubbornly to his preconceived view of the situation. He did not float endless versions of the same bad plan to air traffic controllers to see what they thought of them. He did not spend months preparing for a moment just like this only to be seized by indecision when it arrived.

Instead, he just took the controls and landed the plane in the Hudson.

Geithner needs to go…..ASAP! He is in way over his little head.

May I suggest that his replacement be given a Placement Test, ’cause if you can’t add, subtract, or use Turbo Tax, you don’t get the job.

Never trusted Paulson because he had a huge conflict of interest with his old company getting a great deal.

getalife on March 6, 2009 at 6:11 PM

Hank had a better feel for the markets and a sense of urgency that Geithner doesn’t have. Paulson waved a 3 page plan in front of congress and said he needed $700B right away. When Congress marked his plan up with all sorts of stuff, Hank just injected the money directly into the banks.

Hank had his faults, but the difference between him and Geithner is the difference between a CEO and a bureaucrat.

dedalus on March 6, 2009 at 7:39 PM

That’s right, and now he is applying a liquidity solution to a risk problem. The Fed and Treasury, with Geithner intimately involved, implemented the wrong solution to the problem from the very beginning. Instead of moving quickly to isolate AIG and corral the risk there, and to move the riskiest assets off the balance sheets of the banks (the original intent of TARP), they decided to pour cash into all of the institutions. It was the wrong solution and still is. This a huge reason why the markets are still tanking, credit is still frozen, and 2 trillion in private capital is sitting there doing nothing while our banks slowly bleed to death.

The President just held a great big conference on health care reform. Would it have been so hard for him to have held such a conference in December or January and brought together some leading investment bankers, academics, and equity fund managers to diagnose the problem and recommend solutions?
