Video: Blue Dog speaks out against Card Check
posted at 3:47 pm on March 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s more symbolic than significant, at least at the moment, since Nancy Pelosi presumably has the votes to pass Card Check, but Dan Boren has broken ranks and publicly opposed it. Boren (D-OK) spoke at a meeting of local businessmen at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, explaining exactly why Card Check is so objectionable, and not just for its elimination of the secret ballot from organizing elections. Greg Sargent at Plum Line reports that the unions have taken notice:
The SEIU hit Boren hard for favoring CEOs over his hard-working constituents.
“Boren chose to turn his back on the needs of struggling Oklahomans,” SEIU political director Jon Youngdahl said in a statement sent to me. “If the Employee Free Choice Act passes, 900,000 Oklahomans would see a 14% raise -– bringing more than $410,000,000 straight back into the state economy, every year. That’s math even Dan Boren can understand.”
I’m told that the SEIU will follow up next week with an aggressive campaign against Boren. Battle lines are drawn.
The SEIU apparently didn’t hire too many mathematicians, accountants, or people with common sense. How exactly does that translate to “bringing” that money into the state economy? It doesn’t get created at the moment workers cash their checks. It comes from employers, meaning that the money was already in the state economy. The SEIU just wants government to forcibly distribute it differently. That’s an absurd argument on its face.
And as we discussed yesterday, the true impact of Card Check means massive job losses, as many as 3.5 million over the next few years, as investors hold back and employers have to make up losses from increased labor costs. It’s not rocket science; the more labor costs, the less labor business will be able to buy unless they can raise prices to generate more revenue. With the economy stalled, price hikes will almost certainly be out of the question.
Expect Big Labor to come after Boren — hard. If he stays publicly opposed, other Blue Dogs may follow suit. That will give moderate Senators like Blanche Lincoln, Mark Pryor, and Mary Landrieu reason to withdraw their support, which is the real risk of allowing Boren off the reservation.

Why be in a Union if you don’t have a job?

Apparently the Obotomy failed when it was Boren’s turn.

Rush made a good point today, The Obama trashing those rich fat cat ceo’s partying with tax payer money so intimidated everyone else that they’ve halted plans for business trips, conventions. So who gets hurt when business stop spending on all those conventions at all those high profile convention centers and adjacent hotels
SEIU membership.

Shoot, if Boren gets hit from the left, he could run as an R in Oklahoma and still get elected.

How can any sane person doubt that “check card” is a totally insane idea. No sensible person would support it.

Libs don’t always lie outright, they sometimes just omit. Um, where are employers going to get that extra 14% to pay their new union employees?
SEIU: “The management will just have to take pay cuts!”
Me: “Um, right, so if they don’t do that, and they won’t, then where does it come from . . ”
SEIU: ” . . . ”
Me: “That’s right, they will let other people go and stop any hiring they were thinking of doing. So yeah, the people still working will have 14% more, but there will be many, many more unemployed people. Feel good now?”
SEIU: “You’re racist and classist, PastorJon!”
PastorJon on March 6, 2009 at 3:58 PM
The majority of people don’t. It’s the nest of scum and villainy in Congress that’s pushing it for the dark lords in the Unions.

I agree with you and don’t know why I even bother to comment. Maybe the old south should try secession again while adding the rest of middle america. The Supreme Court would probably approve this time.

The public didn’t support TARP, but it passed. The public didn’t support the stimulus bill(once they learned what was in it), but it passed. The public doesn’t support the mortgage bailout plan, but it’s passed the House.
The public doesn’t support card check…..fill in the blank.

More job losses in the private sector will provide the Democrats more reason to create government jobs (someone has to payout private workers money to the unemployed). And government jobs is where unions are strongest. Makes sense for unions, not for the other 85%.
Does anyone know if governments contribute to unemployment insurance like private companies are forced to do?
WashJeff on March 6, 2009 at 4:13 PM
…not even counting the job losses to the business owners (who often are within 15 years or less of retirement) that shut their doors because they’ve had enough of sock puppets crap.
I’d shut my doors too if the unions came barging in demanding my employees fill their wallets and provide them with nothing but fatter unemployment checks.

No. No. No. He voted for porkulus in February. He can stay with the Dems.

I’ve been invited to an SEIU sponsored Townhall meeting (March 14) for city council candidates. Attending will be the electricians local, the police union, the fire union, the city employees union, and the teacher’s union. The 25 page questionnaire/RSVP form I received is breathtaking. Let me put it this way…I answered “no” to every question on it.
I’m going to go to that Townhall, look straight at them and explain free market economics. I probably won’t gain any votes, but they’re going to get the truth.

Republicans need to stand on principle and if a Blue Dog is standing alongside us in this belief that Card Check is an attack against voter privacy, then who cares what “side” their on. If we consistently stand on principle, we won’t lose our way and perhaps attract others with like principles. Is that so bad?

There are pros and cons about Unionization…mostly “Cons”. I speak as a ‘dismember’ of (2) Unions over a span of 30+ years. I know what I speak of. “Seafarers International Union” and “American Maritime Officers Union.” I had to pay ‘dues’ in both unions (due or die) in order to retire with a paltry retirement. I drive a 1999 Chevy pick-up, and live in an apartment complex paying $750 a month, and food and utilities ain’t getting no cheaper.
P.S. You can call me Captain (Tugboat Joe)…as if that would pay the rent.
JoeySlippers on March 6, 2009 at 5:36 PM
Well there is a way to fight back though it may take some time. Do not stay at or book events or attend events where SEIU calls the shots. I will certainy do this in the future, it will make me feel better I think.

I’m getting to be curious about secession. And just a couple of months ago I was telling my son that America is the greatest country on Earth. What is going on right now is disgusting.
melda on March 6, 2009 at 6:33 PM
The SEIU doesn’t have a pot to piss in in OK. Look at the election results from November—only WY gave McCain/Palin a higher percentage of votes for president.
Boren’s perfectly safe, and perfectly in line with his constituents on this issue.

of course
I think that’s what Michael Steele was talking about when he said the GOP needs to be able to support moderates…we need allies and you don’t make allies by spitting in people’s faces.

At the base is the concept that elected officials think they are rulers. Long ago, most of them forgot or ignored the idea that they exist to protect the liberty of US citizens and ensure the the continuation of the republic.
Ees time for rrrevolution!!!
Imagine Frank, Pelosi, Reid etc. paraded through the steets on their way to their deserved fate.
