Revolt over: White House puts Brooks back on the leash
posted at 9:42 am on March 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Allahpundit noted with some amazement that even David Brooks had experienced a Road to Damascus moment this week, with the scales falling from his eyes and discovering that the man he’d backed in the election turned out to be a statist liberal. Thankfully, St. Paul was made of sterner stuff, because he didn’t try to put the scales back on his eyes after just four phone calls from Rome. The White House had four staffers call Brooks, and voila! Brooks is back in the fold:
On Tuesday, I wrote that the Obama budget is a liberal, big government document that should make moderates nervous. The column generated a large positive response from moderate Obama supporters who are anxious about where the administration is headed. It was not so popular inside the White House. Within a day, I had conversations with four senior members of the administration and in the interest of fairness, I thought I’d share their arguments with you today.
In the first place, they do not see themselves as a group of liberal crusaders. They see themselves as pragmatists who inherited a government and an economy that have been thrown out of whack. They’re not engaged in an ideological project to overturn the Reagan Revolution, a fight that was over long ago. They’re trying to restore balance: nurture an economy so that productivity gains are shared by the middle class and correct the irresponsible habits that developed during the Bush era.
The budget, they continue, isn’t some grand transformation of America. It raises taxes on energy and offsets them with tax cuts for the middle class. It raises taxes on the rich to a level slightly above where they were in the Clinton years and then uses the money as a down payment on health care reform. That’s what the budget does. It’s not the Russian Revolution.
We often complain about regular reporters injecting their opinions into what should be objective articles. This is the reverse of that problem. Brooks writes an opinion column, but the opinions are supposed to be his. In this column, he basically turns his newsprint space over to Rahm Emanuel and his staff and merely takes dictation. Had Brooks and the New York Times run this as an interview news piece, it might seem less obsequious than how it appears in Brooks’ column today.
How obsequious? Brooks finishes with this paean to White House flacks:
Nonetheless, the White House made a case that was sophisticated and fact-based. These people know how to lead a discussion and set a tone of friendly cooperation.
Do they? I guess they didn’t say, “We won” when talking with Brooks, but then again, they didn’t have to. This sounds less like “friendly cooperation” and more like a push to get back on the Obama reservation. The biggest laugh of the column? Emphasis mine:
I didn’t finish these conversations feeling chastened exactly.
Does Brooks even think it’s their job to chasten him? They’re supposed to work for us, David, not the other way around. Remember that when you talk to them the next time. It might keep those pesky scales from reattaching themselves to your corneas.

YES. Totally freaked out that these Goodfella thugs are “gently discouraging” journalists from speaking their minds- AND that for whatever reason, (ha) the journalists see fit to completely alter their views. They are barely six weeks into their “rule”. Where, will they go from here?!

Too good to be true. What a tool, I have never seen an administration manipulate the press like this. No matter how much this country is going down the tubes, the media will just not let this Marxist fail.
We can only hope the Slimes goes under (assuming they don’t get a bailout) and people like Brooks are forced to start their own hardly read lame ass blog, like our buddy Frum. I think Brooks needs to go on Levin’s show for a slapdown.
What a bunch of ass kissing jerks….

I think it has less to do with the ballerina being brilliant as much as a NYT “conservative” (lol!),wanting to be the popular high school girl he always secretly desired.
I will give the White House credit for identifying a psychologically damaged columnist to be used.

So, this is one of the “intellectuals” who the “anti-intellectuals” should allow to speak for the GOP? If only Brooks, Frum, et al, could be given carte blanche to represent the party, then the youth vote, minorities, and all “moderates” would surely flock to the GOP, right? Does any of Brooks’ account of his having been taken to the wood shed by the king’s men sound even the slightest bit intellectual you anyone out there? Is it any wonder that calls for “reform” from Brooks and his brethren continue to garner ridicule from the rank and file?

That seems like a harsh comment, but I understand it. I’m trying really hard not to rip into every Obama voter I know; It’s never worth it, they usually try to tell me, “You have to give him time” Time to what? It’s been six weeks and look at the damage he’s done. It’s natural that people don’t like to admit they were stupid, but if I were one who had an “Obama 08″ sticker on my car- I’d remove it and fast.

Hey “girlie-man”, all it takes is four, FOUR, white house reps to contact you…ever think that the president has better things to do then to send out his worker bees to chasten you?
Obama is obsessed with reporters and what they write…Obama should just do the right thing then he won’t have to worry.
This is carried from his campaign, let no negative comment lay…he attacks every negative comment. Doesn’t he have a country to lead?
Believe me, I am less worried about some “reporter” being taken to the woodshed, then I am about the leader of the most powerful country in the world who is worried about insignificant writers and talk show hosts.
This will be written about historically for years…after he is gone.

My aunt is a flaming liberal. I did not talk to her about the election nor she me except for some annoying facebook comments from time to time. Day after election, she wrote me and some friends this gloating email…I mean, she let me HAVE IT. and I told her she was a insulting and that my country meant more to me than some American Idol contest or a Duke/Carolina game when gloating is more than acceptable. I really couldn’t believe her nerve. We have no spoken since. And we were very, very close.

Anyone who repeats this message from the W.H. with no rebuttal or critique has no true insight. Carter-era problems were taken care of by the Gipper, over time, and we had a looong period of national prosperity as a result.
Present is Carter II. How are his policies anything but antithetical to Reaganism?

This is part and parcel of the narcissistic, adolescent mindset that pervades the WH. It reminds me of the popular crowd in junior high who would beat up on the geek/nerd wannabes just to prove their superiority. As someone so eloquently quoted Bugs Bunny in another thread, “Wadda maroon?”

Their sophisticated argument is: It’s Booooooooosh’s fault!
And their solution is to do the things they railed on Bush for – but on a much more massive scale. And all the crap about ensuring that the middle class sees the benefits of the soon-to-be-booming economy is code for more government intervention to a problem largely created by government intervention. Facts indeed.

If he hadn’t been marginalized thus far, he’s now irrelevant. Brooks needs to go stand in the corner with a dunce cap on along with Kathleen Parker–two writers who are no longer worth reading.
The only reasons two to go to the NYT Web site is to get William Safire’s weekly On Language column and Philip Corbett’s weekly After Deadline blog post. (Thanks for the free content, NYT.)
The excerpts from Brooks’s column are nothing short of bizarre. Talk about having your column hijacked. Now that the White House has used Brooks, I hope he doesn’t expect them to call him back. And hope, for his sake, that he didn’t e-mail them naked pictures of himself because they’re going to shoot them all over the Internet.

I love the way these maroons try to pretend that all they are doing is returning the tax rates to what they were in the Clinton days. Without acknowledging that:
1) When Clinton raised taxes, a rising economy stopped rising.
2) Since then, most of our economic competitors have lowered their tax rates.
3) At the same time that this “small” increase in taxes is going through, Obama is also gutting the available deductions, so that even though it’s the same rate, it hurts much more.
MarkTheGreat on March 6, 2009 at 11:19 AM
They’re lying scum, moron.
Is there anyone in the world, now, who doesn’t know that David Brooks has an IQ of 53?

Cartoon: Obama (down in a deep hole digging furiously)—-caption: ” My economic advisor’s told me if I dug deep enough, I could reach China—-where the money is supposed to be”.
Rahm Emmanuel: (hollering down the hole) “Mr. President, China just called and said your line of credit will end soon. I would suggest we bundle our remaining home assets and send them over to Freddie Mac pronto.
Obama (hollering up out of the hole): “Call Brooks and tell him he’s covered”.
Rovin on March 6, 2009 at 11:29 AM
While I understand the sentiment, it’s not Brooks’ IQ that’s really in doubt. He’s obviously an intelligent person, by conventional standards. That even intelligent people can be seduced, for a variety of motives, by extreme political ideologies, is why our enemy is so dangerous. Brooks’ is not the enemy, per se, he’s a victim of our enemy. That being said, I scarcely think he can cause much more harm now.
JiangxiDad on March 6, 2009 at 11:29 AM
I said exactly the same thing wrt Brooks on Newsbusters some time back. Combine the pink tie with round-rimmed glasses and you know the guy’s a closet libtard at best. A very reliable heuristic I’ve arrived at empirically.
DarkCurrent on March 6, 2009 at 11:33 AM
LOL. Prob. true. Elbow patches speak something to me :)
JiangxiDad on March 6, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Sorry, JDad, but I have to disagree with you on this. I have never seen signs of intelligence in any of his writings. He might be a hard worker, but that’s about it, by my estimation. He has never shown any ability to follow complicated reasoning. He draws simple implications (often incorrect, themselves) and has a habit of taking the most pedestrian route for these logical steps – at least by my limited reading of his work.
Emotionally handicapped people are dangers to everyone and everything around them, always. Intelligence often has no power in the face of strong (usually distorted and misplaced) emotions sweeping over an individual, though more intelligent people might be able to hold on a little longer. Brooks suffers the emotional handicaps and lacks the intelligence to hold out for any period of time – again, by my view.
Useful idiots are as dangerous as the main players. That said, I don’t look at Brooks as an enemy, just a moron. I don’t think he has any effect on anyone.
progressoverpeace on March 6, 2009 at 11:39 AM

How many WH staffers does it take to re-educate a “conservative” NY Times columnist?
Four. Just one for the re-education but three to tell him how much he will be appreciated for falling into line and sharing the Obama gospel.
Future riddle for a David Brooks column:
How many pragmatic, naive, overconfident elite intellectual technocrats does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None are needed because the economy is more efficient now. Investment is centrally controlled, light bulbs factories are boarded up and electric light bulbs are illegal.

But since you asked, I like the movement towards pink/purple/baby blue ties, it’s a little nod to the 50s but the shades are slightly more metrosexual so it’s also a fun play on massculinity. I have to say though that the brothas on NFL Sunday/Countdown/Primetime seem to rock the bright shiny ties better than Gibbs or Brooks merely because, as you’ve noticed, skin tone matters as does the suit you wear it with. brooks et al should take a cue from “family” member Andersoon Cooper, a strong rich blue is good when you’re pasty white and please Brooks and other print journalists would it kill you to wear suit jackets that fit.
