Ramirez picks up the Nero theme
posted at 8:57 am on March 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
On Wednesday, I wrote that the main theme of the first six weeks of the new administration was this: Obama fiddled with Rush Limbaugh while Wall Street burned. It turns out that Investors Business Daily editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez was on the same wavelength. Today’s entry by the two-time Pulitzer winner captures this perfectly, extending it to the entire Democratic political leadership (via Power Line):

Ramirez has a terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives a fascinating look at political history. Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here. And don’t forget to check out the entire IBD site, while individual investors still exist.

The problem with the Nero analogy is that the Precedent isn’t fiddling, he’s busy lighting the fires as fast as he can. I think the idiot messiah and his lunatic Congress just passed another bill spending $476,883,339,874 for green salamanders in Chicago within the time I was writing this comment.
The Precedent isn’t wasting time fiddling. He’s working hard to burn this nation to the ground as quickly as possible.

Don’t worry, Ed. A friend of mine at work likened the continuing Wall Street meltdown to when you gain and lose weight. And something, something, magic. Then it will all work out in the end. I’m not so optimistic.
Is it awesome that they are continuously playing “Cabaret” on one of my TV channels? Fairly appropriate for this time…
mjk on March 6, 2009 at 9:02 AM
According to a book called “Eyewitness to History”, the fire that occurred during Nero’s reign happened during a party when Nero staged a mock wedding between himself and one of his generals. They were about to consummate the marriage on an altar when the fire broke out.
Either story line fits.

I also like Mark Levin’s analogy of Obama as Sherman marching through Georgia burning and killing everything in his path.

Until the omnibus bill, I was chalking it all up to a large measure of incompetence mixed with ideology. But I am now leaning toward your view – that the more damaged the fundamentals of the capitalism are, the more easily he can usher in a ‘new era’. And it ain’t gonna look anything like capitalism. Before 2012, there isn’t going to be anything left for Republicans (or anyone else) to fix.

It’s also noted that he often lit the garden pathways at his party with flaming human torches made from Christians (or those he thought MIGHT be Christians). They were crucified, then wrapped in leather and coated with tar, then set alight.

This is a ridiculous cartoon… first of all, it breaks a cardinal rule by directly telling the audience what they should be thinking.
Second, people are criticizing Obama and the Dems for trying to do TOO MUCH. They aren’t “fiddling why Washington burns” but, in fact, doing a lot to try and fix the economy. Now, some people think they’re doing the wrong thing, but to try and suggest they are engaging in trivial matters while ignoring a catastrophe is just incorrect and is a blatant error in concept.
Second, another aspect of this is that responding to criticisms by Limbaugh is trivial. I find this angle funny, considering Republicans in Congress can’t kiss his ass fast enough. If it’s trivial to engage Rush, what is it to grovel to him?
Tom_Shipley on March 6, 2009 at 9:31 AM

No, Obama is not helping to put the fires out. He sets them, he stands in the crowd watching, and he may discuss with others in the crowd about how to put the fires out. But, mainly, he instills fear and panic into the crowd.
He never does anything useful – he just starts more fires.
Completely destructive.
I don’t think the man is so incompetent that he doesn’t know what he is doing – he knows _exactly_ what he is doing. To build a new Amerika in his socialist image, he needs to destroy the old America first…

Limerick on March 6, 2009 at 9:34 AM
If you are looking for a comparison between the legions and our military, you won’t find many. The legions then were sworn to initially defend the Republic, but by Nero’s time had long been sworn to the Emperor instead. Our military swears an oath to defend the Constitution, and although the President is considered the Commander in Chief, he also swears to defend the Constitution. The real question has been whether or not POTUS is also considered to be bound by the UCMJ, the Universal Code of Military Justice, as are all members of the military.
WE have a professional military with incredibly high standards and dedicated people. There has never been a successful mutiny in any of our military units. Ever. However, given the right set of circumstances, they would be obligated to remove a President, or other members of the government or to take such actions as deemed necessary to ensure the safety of the Constitution, and the Nation as a whole.
It is worth remembering that, although the elected officials are responsible for the running of the government, the military is responsible for the safety of the nation from ALL threats, both from without and from within.

For that I blame the media who are doing what could best be described as an absolutely dismal job of reporting on these massive spending bills and analyzing what their consequences are likely to be. I’m encouraged at how flat his rhetoric is falling.
Folks who know what he’s doing hear the code words, talk about a crisis so bad that we just might not ever recover from it, talk about bold, unprecedented action. Even Biden’s talk of girding our loins, and preparing ourselves for actions that we might find shocking or disconcerting.
It’s not working. People want capitalism, they understand it. Obama’s rhetoric isn’t swaying them, they have no idea what the hell he’s talking about.

Study: Dow’s Decline Is Fastest for a New President in Nearly a Century
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen 20 percent since President Obama took the oath of office.

Of course when Bush was President, everything that happened on his watch was his fault according to liberals.
Now that Obama is President, well according to liberals, everything is still Bush’s fault.
How progressive!!!!!
By liberal logic, we can now blame 9/11/01 on Clinton right?
Bush had only been in office a few months(Florida recount put him even further behind being able to get a staff together).
I mean Clinton totally failed against al-qaeda/Saddam and passed this failure right on over to Bush along
with the dot-com bubble deficit.
You can’t have it both ways if you are dealing in reality.

Yeah, this bush depression sux.
The cartoonists loved the rush fiasco and Letterman was really funny last night with Stewert.
Then Colbert trumps Beck:

Check out “Gathering of Eagles”, “Patriot Guard Riders” “Eagles Up” etc. Lots of veterans groups are getting involved these days. We’ve all had enough of the leftists.

My local legion has a small group of vets who have discussed various things, actions they might like to get involved in. We had tried to get out to D.C. for the last GoE but couldn’t find enough participants to make the cost worthwhile from Minnesota.
Still, it’s gratifying to find vets groups online to coordinate with, I’ve even managed to find a handful of people I served with back in the day who are as vociferously faithful to the military and the country as they were back then.

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

If forced to choose between the penitentiary and the White House for four years, I would say the penitentiary, thank you.

In the words of your buddy Biden:
“I’ve got two words for you…”
You’re a tool.

Even that wasn’t right since it’s price/earnings ratio. He admitted that he knows nothing about the stock market, so let me tell him about the 50% hit that my children’s college funds and my husband and my 401Ks have taken. But according to The One, most of us aren’t in the stock market, so I guess we have nothing to worry about since we have all this money to spend on buying stocks that are heading south faster than snow birds in December. Sheesh!

Tell that to your bill collectors! Good luck finding the end of that rainbow.

Nope. Wishful Thinking. Fortunately, people aren’t as black and white, or dumb shall we say, as that and will connect the dots. They already are.

A famous quote of the bush depression is:
“Wall Street got drunk.” Then the Paulson meeting telling the President the shit has hit the fan to socialize the banks.
It will be in the history books but go ahead and spin so you do not have to deal with reality.

Also, in effect, you are saying that Barry, despite his well thought out practical approach to revitalizing the economy, will FAIL. Hope Dkos doesn’t find your treasonous post.
