Obama administration sends invite to Tehran on Afghanistan
posted at 11:48 am on March 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
In accordance with Barack Obama’s pledge to offer an outstretched hand to America’s enemies, Hillary Clinton invited Iran to take part in a regional conference on Afghanistan. Fittingly, Al-Jazeera broke the news last night:
Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has said Iran will be invited to a proposed international conference on the future of Afghanistan.
Clinton suggested the meeting at a gathering of Nato foreign ministers in Brussels on Thursday.
She said the conference involving “all the stakeholders and interested parties” should take place by the end of the month.
Clinton emphasised that all of Afghanistan’s neighbours would be asked to attend the conference.
“If we move forward with such a meeting, it is expected that Iran would be invited as a neighbour of Afghanistan,” Clinton told a news conference in Brussels.
Al-Jazeera called this a “sharp turnaround,” and for some it might seem so, but the US has had lower-level contacts with Iran regarding Afghanistan for years. The reason: drug interdiction. On occasion, the American media reported on these efforts, but for the most part they rarely got noticed. The Iranians and the US have a rare paralleling of interests in this realm, with the Iranians fighting a scourge of opium addiction, and mostly losing. The Iranians had their own domestic reasons for downplaying that partnership, which is why the Bush administration took care not to publicize it irresponsibly.
Of course, Iranian and US interests have diverged significantly at times as well. NATO officials had proof of Iranian support for Taliban attacks inside Afghanistan in 2007, and in 2006 the Guardian reported that the Iranians had begun sending jihadists to aid the Taliban directly. The Iranians apparently want to play both sides of the street, perhaps using their contacts as leverage for more influence on NATO policy in Afghanistan.
Given the existing level of cooperation during the Bush tenure, it seems appropriate to have the Iranians involved to some extent in regional conferences on Afghanistan. One can certainly question the high-level invitation offered by Hillary Clinton in Brussels, though, rather than the previous low-key approach. And before getting a seat at the table, NATO and the Obama administration had better verify which side Iran is on.

Other than the drug issue you refer to, does Iran have a problem re. Afghanistan? I thought all Iran wants is more time to develop their nuclear weapons. Since everyone is giving them as much as they need, where does Obambi/Clinton get the idea that there’s some problem they’d like solved?

Actually, low level contacts have been a part of war for many years, including prisoner-of-war swaps, etc. This includes Nazi Germany. Do you question that Axis of Evil? And like Ed said, the purpose for these particular low-level contacts had everything to do about the drug trade, which both sides have an interest in stifling. I do have a problem with giving Iran a world stage, knowing that American blood is on their hands.

Of course not, Hack. Why have facts get in the way of your opinion of conservatives. Heck, we’ve been talking to Iran for years on their nuclear program, along with Britain, France and Germany. And Bush tried negotiating with Saddam first as well. It’s not that conservatives don’t believe in diplomacy. Rather it’s that they understand that other countries’ foreign policy are more due to their own agenda and isn’t merely a reaction to US foreign policy. Sometimes diplomacy works, but what do you do when it doesn’t?

Once again, it show how little you know about conservatives…we know about “behind the scenes” and low level talks, we understand using third parties like the church that is often used for sensitive negotiations (extra credit if you know which one, don’t google, I will be able to tell if you can answer in just a couple of minutes).
We don’t want, and we abhor, high level talks without pre-conditions, these are murderers, terrorists, asking for the destruction of our culture, and our allies destruction.
Chamberlain never understood that…Churchill did.
Which is why Obama probably removed Churchill bust, and returned it to Britain. Obama doesn’t get it either.
Now the church…you have just a couple of minutes.

Yes and as I remember, all the talking with Iran and the really bad sanctions that Jimmy Carter imposed on Iran really paid off also; on the other hand, they released the hostages very quickly when they were looking straight down the barrel of Ronaldus Maximus’ guns and determination. Why don’t you go and ask the women in Afghanistan what they think of the US? You are just precious! First of all it’s a little bit pathetic that you so closely monitor me and these threads that you do a countdown on how long it’s taken me to respond. If there’s any difference between you and a 15yo girl waiting by the phone for me to call her up I certainly can’t tell.
Now to your oh so important point. I get that there is a difference between low-level talks and Presidential talks. But that’s NOT how the GOP has framed the political discourse about the role of diplomacy in our foreign relations. Bush campaigned on a purely muscular foreign policy: These countries are evil and you don’t talk with evil.
There was no subtlety, no nuance, no “well we actually talk to them about these things, because it makes pragmatic sense to.” And he could NEVER make such a claim because it would undermine his political strategy of being “tough on people who hate us.” I would suspect the vast majority of people who voted for Bush in 2004 had no clue about the various ways we had diplomatic relationships with Iran and who treated the NYT stories on the matter as “liberal bias” attempting to smear the President. My argument isn’t that our diplomatic aren’t pragmatic, and thankfully they are going to be more so now. It’s that the President was disingenuous for purely political reasons.

Just like the Bed Crapper in Chief, his merry party full of serial liars and the DNC poodle media you are extremely apt at setting up straw men and knocking them down.

Like the Bed Crapper in Chief, not so good.
NoDonkey on March 6, 2009 at 1:35 PM
This is your favorite tactic ever, throw a bunch of insults arond, accuse someone of setting up a strawman and then doing zero intellectual work to demonstrate why it’s a strawman. Here I’ll help you half way by defining what a strawman argument is, you don’t seem to understand. A strawman is when you falsely conflate an extreme version of your opponents argument as their own and defeat that. That way you don’t have to substantively engage their position.
Now that you knwo what it is, care to explain how I did that?

I know I shouldn’t feed the trolls but I can’t help it when it comes to my favorite HA troll get-a-clue. This is long I know, but I just had to get it out and hopefully it will enable getalife to get-a-clue, but I doubt it as he/she is obviously drunk on the kool-aid and there is no hope for him/her.
Well, well, what a surprise, get-a-clue troll extraordinaire has popped his head out of his hole. First of all I fail to see where the US has had a “war monger” attitude toward Iran, some saber rattling yes, but again I fail to see how the US responses to Iran over the years can be construed as “war mongering.”
In fact if anything I’d say the US has been much too restrained when it comes to responding to Iran’s belligerence, especially after they stormed our embassy in 1979 and held Americans hostage, you do remember that don’t you get-a-clue? In case you are not aware an embassy in a foreign nation is considered by international law as a sovereign nation within the host nation and what the Iranian’s did in 1979 was an act of war that should have been firmly responded to militarily, but then again we had the pacifist, appeasing, terrorist apologist peanut picking Carter as POTUS at the time so it’s no wonder the only thing Carter was able to do was launch an ill conceived “rescue mission” that only managed to make the US look weak and embolden Iran to become what it has become over the last 30 years, an axis of evil hell bent on destroying the West, especially Israel and the US!
Also, I love how lefty trolls like you throw out the “war-monger” label whenever it comes to those of us on the right or anyone that would even consider it prudent to protect ourselves using military force when it’s obvious diplomacy and talks will not work as they have never worked when dealing with the mad-mullahs of Iran, in fact I challenge you to come up with one example of how any negotiations over the last 30 years with Iran and/or other similar regimes has honestly worked.
No one in their right mind wants war get-a-clue, so for you and the left to constantly throw the “war-monger” label at us is not only tiresome but it’s totally dishonest!
I believe most people in the world would like to see all conflicts solved through talks and negotiation, however I also believe many people (like you) have forgotten the basic rules when it comes to negotiations, and one of the most important rules in negotiations is being able to find some middle ground that both sides can agree on, however when one side has an absolute fixed agenda that they are unwilling to concede (like Iran’s desire to wipe Israel off the map and “death to America” as they chant after every Friday prayers) well then talks and negotiations become a moot point and the only thing negotiations accomplish is providing Iran more time to do things like, oh, say, develop a nuclear weapon and build its military arsenal.
n fact Iran loves it when the EU and/or the US (through back door diplomacy) tries to negotiate, they brag about how stupid we are laughing behind our backs at how weak we are and what suckers we are to negotiate with them when all it is accomplishing is giving them (the Iranians) time to get close to accomplishing their previously stated goals!
So call us “war-mongers” all you like, but at least we are intelligent enough to know when talking and negotiating with Iran won’t work any better than talking and negotiating with the cyborg from the terminator movie!
Here’s a pop culture reference that may help you wrap you’re scared little head around what I’m attempting to get across to you, as John said to Sarah; you don’t understand, the terminator cannot be reasoned with, it cannot be bargained with, and it won’t stop until you’re dead!” and in our situation Iran and its mad-mullahs are the terminator, they cannot be bargained or reasoned with and will not stop until we (the infidels, that includes you too get-a-clue) are all dead.
Just like in the song “Coward of the County” sometimes you gotta fight when you’re a man, and our nation in order to protect its way of life and freedoms must also fight when we are left with no choice but to do so, and Iran over the last 30 years and up to this day is leaving us with no choice as long as they continue to cling to their current ideology and path, so no matter how dark you tint those rose colored glasses of yours or how deep you bury your scared little head into the sand all the negotiating and talking in the world is not going to get Iran to turn away from its sick and twisted fascist death cult religion nor its ultimate goal of destroying the US!
One day get-a-clue you will come to realize just how wrong you are and you will also come to regret that your dear leader Obambi didn’t have the stones to do what needed to be done when it comes to Iran but instead tried to talk and negotiate with them…mark my words.

Oh and one more thing that nobody has paid attention to, remember Moammar Qaddafi? Remember what he did when he saw that Bush meant business? No? He scrapped his whole nuclear program and allowed inspectors to go in and make sure they were doing it. Why did that happened? Oh yes, because they knew that Ogabe would win and they wanted to be in his good side, right? Oh and Lebanon is free of Syria, and they have elections there and 50 million people are free, c’mon, you liberal moron you, aren’t you for women’s rights? how about liberating the women of Afghanistan? You just won’t admit it.
One more thing, are you going to start with Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the first media hacks to get the death penalty? That I would pay to see.

I need to add, which finally exposed the true depth of AQ Khan’s nuclear black market, which means that, in the end, the Iraq War turned up much more WMD than anyone ever imagined (and more important WMD, since this was the international market of nukes) but it came via Libya, though due only to the fact that we went into Iraq and scared the living sh!t out the middle east for a little while. That’s how things get done.

This was all to your incredibly naive statement that conservatives did not know about “discussions”.
You never knew the one organization, that for over 100 years, has been at the forefront of negotiations, and as stated was the older religious lobbying company.
A church, who has been involved in most every major negotiations, and even has an office at the U.N. Whom calls on them often.
The church, surprisingly, Nixon belonged to…the Quakers.
So my little liberal friend, the most basic information is now imparted to you…I am shocked that a liberal didn’t know that (the oldest pacifist organization in America), actually I’m not, you have so seldom been correct in your statements or analysis…and this is just another one in a long list of…DUHHHH’s

So why can’t we negotiate with Osama Bin Laden if we can negotiate with the terrorist Iranian mullacracy?

“Smart Power” update:
Evidently, the Fox story is true about the moronic “reset” button. It’s now on Drudge, too.
I can just hear the forced cackling going on and on and on …
“Smart Power”. More to come, no doubt.

And I hold my head up high
Put my thumb up to the sky
Waiting for a ship to pass me by
Hoping it will take me for a ride

Other than the small possibility his own people will remove him somehow, Ahmadinejad will be the cause of a nuclear war. Clinton would serve us best by stabbing him to death at the table.

Any bets that His Oneness will re-instate the U.S. Embassy in Tehran?
That is one instance where I personally would not blame any U.S. Marine assigned there for deserting.
