Video: Stewart rips an absent Santelli
posted at 6:40 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Honestly, the one firm media rule that every pundit should have tattooed on their hands is this: Don’t stand up popular TV hosts. After bailing out of the Daily Show, Jon Stewart has a field day with Santelli in this longish segment. He especially lights up Santelli’s network, CNBC, for their prognosticating peccadilloes:

Blowback

most overrated hack ever….go back to talk soup twit
sven10077 on March 5, 2009 at 6:43 PM
This behavior by tv hosts is reprehensible. It is identical to a 3 year old having a temper tantrum. Stewart should be shamed for this stunt, instead of rewarded with links.
Nessuno on March 5, 2009 at 6:43 PM
Stewart is a pimp for the left
he has none of the guts Santelli has

No wonder his ratings have tanked lately.

Jon Stewart – Occasionally funny.. But I would be too if I had 10 writers working day-night for 30 minutes of material..
Libs show the ugly when its their own rant.
Jason Gillman on March 5, 2009 at 6:48 PM
Stewie keeps saying over and over that Santelli is “mad at the homeowners”. A bold faced lie. Santelli’s cry went out to and was reciprocated by homeowners. Big big difference.
Guardian on March 5, 2009 at 6:49 PM
Oh noez! Now Santelli has been ripped by a liberal Comedy Central host who would’ve spent the time ripping him for not believing we should bailout losers in the first place. I’m sure he’s shaking. And was Stewart really mocking “cheap populism”? That’s Obama’s entire schtick.
amerpundit on March 5, 2009 at 6:49 PM
No reason to listen to John the Baptist anymore…the Messiah has already ascended into the Whitehouse.

The ratings for Stewart are minuscule, why he has been given a forum here I haven idea. He is a nobody that only speaks few dead end lefties. Ignore him.
echosyst on March 5, 2009 at 6:51 PM
A few more things.
A) Stewart seems to think that people are innocent if they blindly accept money because someone offers it to them.
B) Cramer was making that prediction sometime around he was endorsing Obama.
C) CNBC said AIG wouldn’t go bankrupt because it’s the biggest insurer in the world. AIG was stopped from going bankrupt because it’s the biggest insurer in the world. Did I miss something there?
amerpundit on March 5, 2009 at 6:53 PM
All of these idiots ratings are going to tank if they act as propaganda wings of Obama Crime Inc.
I literally had to stop watching, it was such painfully obvious toadying to his “master”..
jjshaka on March 5, 2009 at 6:53 PM
how many times did you have to re-write that description to find one that described whatever it is that Stewart does.

John Leibowitz. Such a proud man he had to change his name.

Not a lot of fans of little Jon Liebowitz, here.
Angry Dumbo on March 5, 2009 at 6:56 PM
I don’t agree with his politics; but, on this occasion, I thought the bit was funny. CNBC analysts said a lot of stupid things about the economy and the market over the last couple of years (the Fox “experts” were no better – be grateful Jon Liebowitz didn’t go after them as well).
Phildorex on March 5, 2009 at 6:59 PM
John Stewie is a lot like Keefe….smarm a mile wide supported by an intellect an inch long…
I notice he like the other late night and comedy hosts somehow missed out on Bambi’s little P/E problem….
sven10077 on March 5, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Conservatives keep picking the wrong guys saying the right messages. I can see the merit in what Joe the Plumber, Santelli, and Limbaugh have to say, but as long as most Americans see them as ignorant anti-intellectual jerks, they’re the wrong ones to deliver those messages day in and day out. Jon (for once) is right. Professional traders and cable TV analysts shouldn’t be the ones badmouthing Obama’s mortgage bailout; economists, politicians, and political reporters and pundits should. If conservatives want a sure way to lose, having the right ideas with the wrong spokesmen is a surer way to do so than even having the wrong ideas with the right spokesmen (as we’re seeing in the White House).
calbear on March 5, 2009 at 7:01 PM
When you want to talk seriously about a topic, Stewart’s show is the last one you want to be on. Unless you like talking to idiots.

Maybe Santelli has better things to do,…
walking the dog,
feeding his fish,
taking a nap.
Anything but Mr Stewart.

Is this the same John Stewart that was wet for Obama? A person could have as much fun with Him and his adoration of Obama’s failing policies.

Anything to draw attention away from the destruction of millions of Americans’ life savings by Stewart’s messiah.

sven10077 on March 5, 2009 at 7:06 PM
John Leibowitz is an idiot. Rick Santelli has been more correct than the Prez.
Market needs more Santelli less Leibowitz
moxie_neanderthal on March 5, 2009 at 7:07 PM
That’s not true. If you’re a liberal he’ll given you loads of time to go on and on about things. Of course if you’re a conservative he’ll do his version of O’Reilly and keep you from talking. (Usually by butting in with a cheap 1 liner to interrupt the train of thought and get the audience cheering for the next 20 to 30 seconds.)
That reminds me, guess my predicition will be wrong. I predicted Obama would be on during his first 100 days and this would be the high point of the show. (IE it’d be all down hill from there.) At this point I don’t think Barry’s coming on anytime soon. (Still I’m sticking with my prediction that his audience will soon start dumping him like crazy because he is literally getting too old for them. I’m sorry, when you’re 45+ you’re not cool or hip anymore.)
Dave_d on March 5, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Well, it would be nice if, in addition to looking right for the part, he or she could also explain what the bloviators are trying to explain, only without the bloviation. For example, “Treat the homeowners like you’d treat the financial firms. Give them a loan. Bet on them, if you’re feeling lucky. But don’t give the no-strings-attached money (in the form of enforced loan restructuring) as a reward for poor financial decisions. No one should get a free lunch for bad behavior, because that just encourages more bad behavior for more free lunches, leading to ruin.”

This scares me. A media figure was forced by CNBC to shutup. His company. Ge than allowed him to be attacked on national tv and had is character and honor slimed and not be able to defend himself. this is a message to the MSM do not talk bad about the dear leader. can I click my shoes and return to Kansas?

well done by Stewart. I recommend Fox Business if you want real news from people who don’t think their crap doesn’t stink.
I hope Fox Business makes it through the tough times. CNBC was great for a while, but I really hope Fox Business becomes the leader in business news. They have had the best news shows for years in a two hour block on Saturday.

I sure hope this saying is true. “You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all the time”. I think that is the quote. God save America.

I’m 27 and lots(maybe most) of my friends get the bulk of their news from The Daily Show. Obama is The One, Palin is retarded, whatever John Stewart says goes. It makes me think back to his appearance on Crossfire. I see a self-righteous smarmy hack, they see enlightened man tellin’ it like it is. John Stewart, you are culpable for Obama’s election and all the destruction he is causing to my country.

getalife on March 5, 2009 at 9:09 PM
Santelli isn’t mad at homeowners. He’s mad at morons who cannot do simple math, don’t understand basic budgeting, and sign any piece of paper that the nice salesman shoves in front of them.
Illinidiva on March 5, 2009 at 9:12 PM
At least Rick Santelli knows at least as much as a freshman in an introductory business school class. By contrast, your guy is attempting to fundamentally change our economy and is apparently incapable of properly defining the most rudimentary financial yard stick….the PE ratio!
If you’re legally blind but driving the bus, it might be a good idea to at least apply the brakes when you hear the passengers screaming.
moxie_neanderthal on March 5, 2009 at 9:17 PM
Agreed… Hey I’d be willing to be a spokesperson against Obama. Here’s my deal.. I graduated Summa Cum Laude at UIUC, so no one can call me an intellectual. However, I am 27 and make only $42K per year and I rent an apartment because I cannot afford a condo in Chicago. I knew that I couldn’t afford a condo, so I didn’t even look in 2006 or 2007. The bailout is benefiting those who were irresponsible and bought homes that they couldn’t afford on the tax dollars of those who are responsible. I also do this cute innocent victim act (5’1” and look about 18) which really seems to work with many people.
There are probably similar people like me on this board… The best way to finally “trap” the Messiah is to have one of us ask him a question on the meeting. As long as that person comes off reasonable and logic and has a certain background, it’ll be really hard for the Messiah’s minions to debunk them. They can smear Joe the Plumber as a blue collar hick and Rick Santelli as a rich trader, but how exactly are they going to smear a middle class woman in her late-twenties who works as an entry level financial analyst making fairly low wages, had an upper middle class upbringing, and graduated from college with honors.
Illinidiva on March 5, 2009 at 9:25 PM
This thread is funny. Lots of owned Santelli fans. Good job, Stewart.
BTW, I oppose the bailout for the homeowners. I’m one of those who made more money than a bus driver yet thought I couldn’t afford a house half as expensive.
That being said, Stewart is excellent at owning people for their hypocrisy.
radiofreevillage on March 5, 2009 at 9:45 PM
Nice sentiment, but the left will smear anyone who gets in their way…..remember Judge Bork, and the confirmation hearings for Justice Thomas?
The key, IMO, is to not let them smear you; fight back and do it with a smile, but fight…

cryptojunkie on March 5, 2009 at 10:05 PM
I’m still trying to figure out what they will smear me on… Hmm. I’m basically a “white” person, but am not dumb enough to vote like most “white” people (Y’all who read the blogs will know what I mean). I graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of IL. (It isn’t Havard, but I don’t think that I’m a low class hick). I don’t have any parking tickets, back taxes, secret pregnancies, or vindictive boyfriends. I also look about eighteen even though I’m twenty-seven and am very good at playing the victim. I want to see the liberal bloggers gang up on sweet li’l me; I could probably even shed a few tears on TV. Ganging up on a big plumber might work for the Obama minions; ganging up on a petite woman won’t work so well. I’m sure that I’m not the only one out there.
Illinidiva on March 5, 2009 at 10:18 PM

ernesto on March 5, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Honestly, I have no idea how well his ratings are; however, he may suffer in the future due to a lack of comedic material. We can all take a joke and could laugh at some of his Bush jokes, but if he refuses to go after the congressional (D)-majority and Obama (all who have many of their own faults), then his show will fail to be very relevant. He simply can’t bash Republicans/conservatives out of existence. If he could, whom would he go after? The Amish, perhaps?

Alex, I’ll take self-loathing, name changing liberal Jews for $400.
This is funny, for what it says about Leibowitz. He is liberal attack dog. His open attack on Santelli must have come from above. Tactically it means that the polls suggest that democrats OWN the economy and the stock market specifically, much as republicans owned the war during the last election cycle.

So, Stewart complains about cheap populism by… engaging in cheap populism. But it’s OK, cause he’s just a comedian, and nobody actually listens to him for news, right? Well, except for the people in my generation who voted in the one of the authors of generational theft.
Esthier on March 6, 2009 at 11:33 AM
Mr. Stewart, in all his wealth, wouldn’t understand this, but most people actually have to ASK the BANK for mortgage money, rather than have it offered to them. “Here Mr.Smith, take this $100,000 as a down payment on a million dollar home you can’t afford”. Yep, it happens every day. What a jerk!

Uhh – just this week Jon did a segment that directly mocked Obama’s words – just like he did with Bush (and even better, it was while comparing Obama to Bush).
Reading these comments make me shake my head – you see *one* clip and decided he obviously must never make fun of Obama.
Of course, then we have someone like ‘Illinidiva’ already ready to go on TV and shed tears and play a victim? Wow.

I’ll take you up on that. I watch the show often enough to know that’s just plain untrue. He does call out the left on rare occasion, but a thousand? examples? Come on. I’m willing to go on TV and play victim if I ever get the chance to ask the Messiah a question about his idiotic policies, like his stupid McMansion bailout. I’m all for someone asking him something like that at one of his idiotic pep rallies.
Of course, if I ever get the chance, it’s likely you and your Kos buddies will try to eviserate me ala Joe the Plumber. Of course, you won’t find anything, not even any moving violations. But in that scenario, I get to go on TV and cry about how some mean Internet people are trying to ruin my life. I’m very cute and look like I’m eighteen, so pray tell me who do you think would be the winner in that situation… Of course, this will likely never happen but it is a fun fantasy for y’all Obama cultists to ponder between your sips of Kool Aid. I hate to tell you that not all Conservatives can be smeared as stupid hillbillies.
