Obama the Cheapskate: 25 DVDs for Gordon Brown?

posted at 2:10 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The British have begun to worry about the “special relationship” in the Anglosphere since the election of Barack Obama.  First, the visit from Gordon Brown failed to get the usual Rose Garden joint-presser treatment from the White House this week.  Now the Daily Mail reports that Obama cheaped out on the traditional gift exchange, rustling up some DVDs in exchange for a thoughtful gift from Brown:

Gordon Brown has been given a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama.

The Prime Minister flew home from his successful trip to Washington this morning with the ‘special collector’s box’ of films hidden in his luggage.

No 10 had tried to keep the present a secret, refusing to answer reporters who asked what President Obama had given to mark the reaffirmation of the special relationship.

Wow.  You know, Amazon often sells collections like that at steep discounts, even in Blu-Ray.  Thankfully, Obama saved the US taxpayers a few bucks.  I’m sure that Brown put a similarly negligent amount of thought into his gift, right?  Right?

Er …

Mr Brown’s gifts included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President.

Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.

Another treasure given to the U.S. President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.

Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

Brown also brought gifts for Obama’s daughters, a rather gracious act, especially considering the reciprocity.  The Daily Mail also notes that Brown isn’t a film buff anyway, which makes the DVD set rather pointless.

People objected when Obama returned the bust of Winston Churchill to the British Embassy, which had loaned it to George Bush eight years ago.  I didn’t find that surprising, especially given the history of Obama’s grandfather, or at least how Obama understands it.  I’d not likely keep a bust of Oliver Cromwell in the West Wing if I were President, gift or not, for similar reasons.  (I’m an admirer of Churchill, though.)

However, this seems like a rather deliberate insult, or at best diplomatic incompetence.  It’s one thing to cheap out on a gift for a friend or relative at Christmas, but the British have stood by the US for many long decades, through some very dark times.  Despite unpopularity at home, they remained at our side in Iraq and Afghanistan.  They deserve a little more effort from this administration, and a hell of a lot more appreciation.

Update: Ace and Moe Lane have more thoughts about the thoughtlessness, which extends to the First Lady as well.  Two plastic replicas of Marine One from the White House gift store for Brown’s sons?  Wow.  Don’t strain a biceps with that effort, Mrs. Obama.

Update II: People wonder why I took a shot at Oliver Cromwell.  All one has to do is read about his campaigns in Ireland, which amounted to a brutal ethnic cleansing, to understand, but even apart from that, Cromwell was a rather despicable figure.  Ironically, I can quote Winston Churchill from his History of the English-Speaking Peoples as an authority:

If in a tremendous crisis Cromwell’s sword had saved the cause of Parliament, he must stand before history as a representative of dictatorship and military rule who, with all his qualities as a soldier and a statesman, is in lasting discord with the genius of the English race.

Churchill blasts Cromwell for his actions in Ireland, too, describing them as “merciless wickedness [which] debased the standards of human conduct and sensibly darkened the journey of mankind.”

He should have given him a couple copies of one of those inaugural books. They are REDUCED now – significantly – Amazon.com and on the bargain table already at a college bookstore I was in today. Two months in and they are not selling well at full price. The perfect gift.

When she delivers enough to do this every week, then I’ll be impressed. Again, one-off acts of charity with the cameras rolling don’t impress me:

Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

In other words, she’s already gotten her reward in your adulation.

Given how incompetent and clueless the Obama’s are, I’m guessing someone said: “Aw…CRAP! It says here that when entertaining dignataries from other nations, particularly your best and longest term ally, it’s traditon to give them a gift. So,who has the gift? Barry? Weezie? Rahm? Anyone? Shit! Quick, someone go to Costco and get one of those DVD collector sets. And we need something for the kids. Weezie! Run down to the gift shop and pick up some trinkets for the kids! I don’t know!!! Some plastic helicopters. Something! Quick! They’re leaving in an hour!”

DVD’s and plastic helicopters! Unbelievable! As Banya would say:

I don’t know if Obama had this done to order “diplomatic” gifts in bulk or what:

But the Mail has learned it included classics such as Star Wars, The Godfather and Citizen Kane and was produced by the American Film Institute as a ‘special request’ for the White House last month.

INC on March 5, 2009 at 9:24 PM

Ugh… The imagine of Rahm running down to Best Buy and picking up a DVD at the last minute is a hoot, but the fact that someone at the White House thought that world leaders actually gave a hoot about Star Wars and took the time to burn DVDs in bulk is just plain wrong and speaks to a long four years.

Sorry but I must call you out on Cromwell. Cromwell was harsh in a couple of sieges but it was an accepted convention of war at the time that if a town refused to surrender then the population could be put to the sword. There were several towns where the population wasn’t slaughtered. You must also remember that there had been recent incidents of Catholics massacring Protestant settlers. A great deal (not all) of the story about Cromwell in Ireland is nineteenth century Nationalist propaganda.
A lot of us here in the UK are extremely angry about the hon knighthood for Kennedy. It reminds us that in the last thirty years many Americans gave money to Noraid and sang sentimental songs in Irish bars about the IRA while their heroes were not just killing soldiers or policemen and women but using bombs to kill and maim ordinary citizens. Suddenly after 9/11 we heard much less of that so please understand our cynicism when we here lectures from Americans about terrorism – we had thirty years of it.
As for Cromwell he took up arms against a King who wanted to emasculate Parliament. From the age of 40 this man who had never had any military experience proved himself one of the greatest generals in history. Read also his contributions to the Putney Debates in 1647 – they provide the groundwork of the US Constitution. Once in power he tried to work out some semblance of representative govenment but was assailed from right and left so became one of the worlds least willing dictators. He also refused the offer of the crown. Churchill’s view of him is biassed because he came from an aristocratic family thta had supported the Royalists in our civil war and Cromwell himself was just a small farmer.
Never expected such Kennedyesque posing and blind acceptance of faux history here on HA…

Sorry, but Cromwell was a savage. He personally led his English troops in the murder of over one million Irish men, women and children. He then spread the word in England that the Irish extermination was a good thing, as the Irish were not really fully human, and indeed they bodily possesed the tails of lower form primates.

Also, please don’t even try to go there with Irish having to be put down for killing the English, who came to that beautiful country and stole the land, and the food grown on it. The “potato famine” was really another genocide, as the Irish grew many crops and raised delicious livestock. However, all of the crops and livestock were exported from the country by the English, who owned the land that they so “generously” allowed the Irish to farm. All that was left was a rotting potato crop. Thus, millions died.

The English have been a horrible scourge to the Irish throughout most of the last eight hundred years, yet the Irish forgive and move on. However, forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting the truth and forgetting to honor those who suffered so mercilessly at their hands.

Sorry but this is exactly the sort of Hamas style mythology that illustrates my point. Please read “New History of Cromwell’s Irish Campaign” by Philip McKeiver…..

“Oliver Cromwell’s Irish campaign of 1649/50 is the most controversial in the Lord Protector’s not uncontentious career. Recently, two Irish historians have produced books which give diametrically opposed verdicts on his conduct : one acquitting him of ordering atrocities; the other confirming the traditional hostile Irish view of the ‘massacres’ which accompanied the storming of Drogheda and Wexford. In this work, Philip McKeiver sets out, by analysing the relevant historiography, to shatter several myths. Much of what we believe about these events, McKeiver argues, is based on propaganda which has muddied the historical waters. The result of a decade spent researching the evidence, McKeiver concludes that Cromwell’s reputation, record and character has been systematically vilified and blackened; and that most of the allegations against him are dubious and unsupported by primary documents. Sadly, it suited both England and Ireland to exaggerate Cromwell’s Irish actions and by so doing prostitute history for political
and religious purposes.”

callingallcomets on March 6, 2009 at 6:12 AM

What the British did in Ireland under Cromwell is as bad as what is going on in Darfur now. Not to mention what they did during the Irish Potato Famine, so I think it is best for the Brits to not try to “nuance” anything that happened there.

Obambi’s grandfather being killed by the Brits notwithstanding, this ain’t no case of a diplomatic faux pas. Remember, BHO’s mantra that he would succeed where Bush failed by using “smart” diplomacy.

Hence, this is meant to be an insult, and a rather ironic one at that.
1) For one who masquerades as an “African-American” (not really) — as in Black with all the history & legacy that accompanies most Black Americans — he, on behalf of all Americans descended from slaves should be appreciative of this significant token from the HMS Gannet. This from the One who identifies himself closely with Abe Lincoln, which is a break from the typical Liberation theology group that damns Lincoln as just another Whitey that would gladly keep slavery going.

2) Seeing how he’s actually a Kenyan-American, this is an insult for a wrong committed against his grandfather. As a Kenyan Head of State, this sort of slight would be perfectly understandable, what with the spirit of tribalism and all that. However, as POTUS, he represents We-The-People, not Kenyans.

I’m still trying to reconcile the above points with his own treatment of his immediate family on the Kenyan side. Hmmm…

Methinks that the whole MauMau saga is perhaps tangential to his Marxist ideology. Who supported the MauMaus? USSR.

Friends of liberty be damned and communists be praised. IOW, expect more of the same with the upcoming visit to the Queen.

But when he meets Putin/Medved, don’t be surprised to see him on bended knee to kiss their ring finger and bearing meaningful gifts.

As POTUS Barackobambi should represent all of us. Itll never happen. What a combo – Marxist Narcissist. Hmmmm maybe not unusual at all.

Both Obama’s are arrogant and neither has any social graces. Remember the 9-11 ceremony at the WTC when Obama tossed his flower rather than laying it down gently?

I am upset with Obama’s dilike of Churchhill and here’s why: let’s pretend that Obama is our first Japanese-American POTUS instead of black. Imagine that he hated FDR because of Japanese internment and decided to remove any FDR image from the White House. This, imo, is a similar position and it’s an outrage. Ed, I am also of Irish descent and can understand your statement about Cromwell. But, let’s pretend again. Let’s pretend that Cromwell not only was cruel to the Irish BUT ALSO fought alongside America in one of our biggest wars. As an Irish-AMERICAN my loyalties are to the USA first and I would’ve made peace with Cromwell in light of that.

It’s a similar way conservatives feel about FDR. We all know he was a Commie (how many Commies were in his cabinet, again?), but he fought WWII and won it. Thus, even conservatives wouldn’t kick a bust of FDR out of the WH.

Obama’s behavior isn’t surprising in the least, but hopefully this opens some eyes about who he is here and in Britain.

That being said, the Lord Protector is one of my favorite historical leaders so I’d be happy to have his bust in my Oval Office (being a Republican it’s not like I’d win Mass. anyways). My views on Cromwell are admittedly biased by my slight, to understate it, dislike of Ireland.

If you read the link, she spend two weeks organizing a food drive in the article and collected two weeks worth of food for the homeless shelter. More than just 20 minutes went into this. As usual, people with no experience community organizing think that all that goes into these things is the public presentation.

Emphasis mine.

She must not be very efficient with her time. Two weeks to organize a food drive? Seriously? I could plan a wedding in two weeks’ time. Ever heard of email and a box by the employee entrance?
