Obama the Cheapskate: 25 DVDs for Gordon Brown?
posted at 2:10 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The British have begun to worry about the “special relationship” in the Anglosphere since the election of Barack Obama. First, the visit from Gordon Brown failed to get the usual Rose Garden joint-presser treatment from the White House this week. Now the Daily Mail reports that Obama cheaped out on the traditional gift exchange, rustling up some DVDs in exchange for a thoughtful gift from Brown:
Gordon Brown has been given a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama.
The Prime Minister flew home from his successful trip to Washington this morning with the ‘special collector’s box’ of films hidden in his luggage.
No 10 had tried to keep the present a secret, refusing to answer reporters who asked what President Obama had given to mark the reaffirmation of the special relationship.
Wow. You know, Amazon often sells collections like that at steep discounts, even in Blu-Ray. Thankfully, Obama saved the US taxpayers a few bucks. I’m sure that Brown put a similarly negligent amount of thought into his gift, right? Right?
Er …
Mr Brown’s gifts included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President.
Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.
Another treasure given to the U.S. President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.
Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.
Brown also brought gifts for Obama’s daughters, a rather gracious act, especially considering the reciprocity. The Daily Mail also notes that Brown isn’t a film buff anyway, which makes the DVD set rather pointless.
People objected when Obama returned the bust of Winston Churchill to the British Embassy, which had loaned it to George Bush eight years ago. I didn’t find that surprising, especially given the history of Obama’s grandfather, or at least how Obama understands it. I’d not likely keep a bust of Oliver Cromwell in the West Wing if I were President, gift or not, for similar reasons. (I’m an admirer of Churchill, though.)
However, this seems like a rather deliberate insult, or at best diplomatic incompetence. It’s one thing to cheap out on a gift for a friend or relative at Christmas, but the British have stood by the US for many long decades, through some very dark times. Despite unpopularity at home, they remained at our side in Iraq and Afghanistan. They deserve a little more effort from this administration, and a hell of a lot more appreciation.
Update: Ace and Moe Lane have more thoughts about the thoughtlessness, which extends to the First Lady as well. Two plastic replicas of Marine One from the White House gift store for Brown’s sons? Wow. Don’t strain a biceps with that effort, Mrs. Obama.
Update II: People wonder why I took a shot at Oliver Cromwell. All one has to do is read about his campaigns in Ireland, which amounted to a brutal ethnic cleansing, to understand, but even apart from that, Cromwell was a rather despicable figure. Ironically, I can quote Winston Churchill from his History of the English-Speaking Peoples as an authority:
If in a tremendous crisis Cromwell’s sword had saved the cause of Parliament, he must stand before history as a representative of dictatorship and military rule who, with all his qualities as a soldier and a statesman, is in lasting discord with the genius of the English race.
Churchill blasts Cromwell for his actions in Ireland, too, describing them as “merciless wickedness [which] debased the standards of human conduct and sensibly darkened the journey of mankind.”

getalife,
You are’nt going to convert any one here to your.. ahem.. “indepedent” streak of politics. You are simply wasting your time trying to pick up fights insulting conservative pols – you will find a more receptive audience at HuffPo, DKos and all other useless lefty blogs.
You may consider yourself a brave/noble warrior of the 101 Keyboard brigades trying to get us dumb people to realize how dumb we are. But you see that’s the problem – we are too dumb to see your righteousness and brilliance.
As far as Gordon Brown goes, it is nothing short of humiliation the way Obama has personally treated him. But why does any one expect any better from a guy who was the personal friend of Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko and Crook County overloads – not to mention Mayor Shortshanks.
Does’nt surprise me at all. If Brown was transparently snobbish like Chirac or Schroeder, he would have gotten along just fine with Obama.
All those Brits who supported Obama must be secretly feeling a lot of embarrassment.
Who you have for friends and how you treat old friends tells a lot about a person – Obama is pretty bad on both counts.

I saw that story earlier today and that was ostentatious of Michelle. Lady Bountiful with the poor. You must have missed the actual numbers on how much the Obamas give of their own money to charity. I’ll find the link.
Obama snubbed Brown. That’s no way to have a good working relationship.

Of course, the DVD’s could be all that the Obamas could afford. Maybe they’re saving up for when Barry’s tax plan is implemented.

And they all want to change the subject away from the fundamental question: Why would a President (supposedly such a brilliant one) treat the head of state of our closest ally so shabbily?

Giving out food that other people made possible through donations. Michelle served 50 people before making a short speech that we should all volunteer our time to help the poor. She is magnanimous taking 20 minutes out of her busy schedule.

The First Lady’s office arranged a White House-wide food drive that yielded almost eight cases of fresh fruit, delivered Wednesday evening, which should be enough to provide fruit for almost two weeks of meals, according to executive director Scott Schenkelberg, who introduced Mrs. Obama
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2009/03/63695899/1?csp=34
Other reasons Michelle may have been busy with higher priorities than picking out something special for the Browns. In theory the Browns gave their gifts without a sense of getting something in return and now that they are aware of how the Obama’s approach these things they’ll buy less expensive stuff next time. Meanwhile this topic has the most comments ever, jeez.

If you read the link, she spend two weeks organizing a food drive in the article and collected two weeks worth of food for the homeless shelter. More than just 20 minutes went into this. As usual, people with no experience community organizing think that all that goes into these things is the public presentation.

Buffoon. These aren’t gifts from friends to friends. They’re gifts of state, and should be handled as meaningful tokens of the diplomatic relationship, and, at the very least, would be handled by protocol officers to be something appropriate and meaningful to the diplomatic concerns.
Not cheap thoughtless crap from the bargain bin.
And STILL no troll will endeavor to explain why the ‘diplomacy’ president wound up acting so (pardon the expression) ‘bush league.’

Wow….. So like Michelle Obama should be applauded for doing the same sort of community service that junior high and high school students participate in to get National Honor Society credit?? My mom also participates in community services now that she’s retired. Perhaps she should also be worshipped with the same reverence as Michelle Obama… sarc off.
Picking out appropriate presents and performing other diplomatic/ White House social functions is part of the job of the First Spouse. Michelle and Barack Obama didn’t even have to waste her time picking out the presents; a staffer did it. However, what reflects badly on the Obama administration is the fact that there are staffers there that think that cheap plastic toys and DVD box sets are appropriate gifts for diplomatic visits. What reflects badly on the Obamas themselves is the fact that they seem to have agreed with these choices.

Again you guys can’t seem to decide if the Obama’s are capitalists or not. Yeah she was brought in as a cost cutter and has zero history when it comes to universal health care. Luckily she’s the first lady, not the architect of the universal healthcare bill. Ideally she’ll have some input on cost cutting measures as that was her job. You act like people who support Obama don’t already know these things. I was living in IL in 2004, I know Obama.
DeathToMediaHacks on March 5, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Only thing “pathetic” about it was that the 7 point gap was the result of 2 things.
1. An “objective media” almost totally in the tank for O’bama. They totally ignored Wright and Ayers. If they had accurately “reported” on O’bama’s past, he would never have won.
2. A third of the people in America eligible to vote didn’t.

One of my boyfriends in high school was an Eagle Scout, and his community service project was to organize a massive food drive. He worked more than two weeks on his project and probably collected more food than the First Lady did. So he should like be worshipped as well… right?
Illinidiva on March 5, 2009 at 5:04 PM
Don’t be a fool. FLOTUS is only a patroness, she has people do the organizing and collecting so she can make a photo-op. Eight cases of fruit is pretty damn cheesy if that is all she could collect in two weeks.

It has nothing to do with the expense, it’s the thought and the symbolism. Brown’s gifts were reminiscent of history and reflective of continuing alliances… Obama’s were simply unworthy of a state visit…

What they are not telling you is that Gordon Brown got 25 DVD’s for free, but he has to purchase 3 more at full price within a year to meet the requirements of Columbia house.
portlandon on March 5, 2009 at 5:09 PM
And while some of her aides are working on the food drive, I think that the Social Secretary could have picked up nice appropriate gifts for the Gordon Brown visit. Laura Bush managed to do both good work in the community (for a heck of a lot more complicated causes than a food drive that any junior high student could pull off) and manage the White House diplomatic/ social functions. I’d think that someone with a Harvard Law Degree would be able to juggle more than one thing at the same time.

Are you saying that Obama did Brown a favor by not doing standard diplomatic protocol? Here it is supposed to go. It has been done this way since JFK. Obama followed this list until the last part of the arrival press conference. If every single diplomat is able to give a speech and have a press conference at the end but not Brown, that is a snub. You are asking if it matters or not? After all it was only a DVD. These websites think so:

the real problem with this gift is the diplomatic precedence it sets going forward. Now if Obama gives another countriy’s leaders a nicer gift it will be seen that the UK has gone from special ally to just another country. what if Hamas gets a nicer gift or Iran or Russia? Or France what will that do. The people that run these things in the WH needs to be fired ASAP and Obama needs to make a special trip to the UK to apoloze forthwith. This is not just classless it is slighting a needed ally during wartime. But then again maybe Obama thinks of europe as just a bunch of white guys that stoled the wealth of the world.

Just google “PM Brown White House gifts news” to get a glimpse of the Brit reaction to the deeply thoughtful State gifts presented by the President of the United States to the British Prime Minister. Then take a gander at what Gordon Brown brought along for the Obama’s. Every one of the British State gifts, to include the items for the Obama kid’s, had a defined symbolism…and purpose.
If the Brits think this is a snub…and they do…all the well-coiffed, crisp white blouse, Neiman-Marcus sweater wearing Michelle photo ops at a DC soup kitchen are not going to molify the Brits.

And as the US Archives reminds us:
In this respect, O’bama’s “gift” of DVDs, and his wife’s “gifts” of White House souvenirs is incredibly tacky, and totally tone-deaf to the rich history of the exchange of such gifts by past Presidents.
