Obama the Cheapskate: 25 DVDs for Gordon Brown?
posted at 2:10 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The British have begun to worry about the “special relationship” in the Anglosphere since the election of Barack Obama. First, the visit from Gordon Brown failed to get the usual Rose Garden joint-presser treatment from the White House this week. Now the Daily Mail reports that Obama cheaped out on the traditional gift exchange, rustling up some DVDs in exchange for a thoughtful gift from Brown:
Gordon Brown has been given a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama.
The Prime Minister flew home from his successful trip to Washington this morning with the ‘special collector’s box’ of films hidden in his luggage.
No 10 had tried to keep the present a secret, refusing to answer reporters who asked what President Obama had given to mark the reaffirmation of the special relationship.
Wow. You know, Amazon often sells collections like that at steep discounts, even in Blu-Ray. Thankfully, Obama saved the US taxpayers a few bucks. I’m sure that Brown put a similarly negligent amount of thought into his gift, right? Right?
Er …
Mr Brown’s gifts included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President.
Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.
Another treasure given to the U.S. President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.
Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.
Brown also brought gifts for Obama’s daughters, a rather gracious act, especially considering the reciprocity. The Daily Mail also notes that Brown isn’t a film buff anyway, which makes the DVD set rather pointless.
People objected when Obama returned the bust of Winston Churchill to the British Embassy, which had loaned it to George Bush eight years ago. I didn’t find that surprising, especially given the history of Obama’s grandfather, or at least how Obama understands it. I’d not likely keep a bust of Oliver Cromwell in the West Wing if I were President, gift or not, for similar reasons. (I’m an admirer of Churchill, though.)
However, this seems like a rather deliberate insult, or at best diplomatic incompetence. It’s one thing to cheap out on a gift for a friend or relative at Christmas, but the British have stood by the US for many long decades, through some very dark times. Despite unpopularity at home, they remained at our side in Iraq and Afghanistan. They deserve a little more effort from this administration, and a hell of a lot more appreciation.
Update: Ace and Moe Lane have more thoughts about the thoughtlessness, which extends to the First Lady as well. Two plastic replicas of Marine One from the White House gift store for Brown’s sons? Wow. Don’t strain a biceps with that effort, Mrs. Obama.
Update II: People wonder why I took a shot at Oliver Cromwell. All one has to do is read about his campaigns in Ireland, which amounted to a brutal ethnic cleansing, to understand, but even apart from that, Cromwell was a rather despicable figure. Ironically, I can quote Winston Churchill from his History of the English-Speaking Peoples as an authority:
If in a tremendous crisis Cromwell’s sword had saved the cause of Parliament, he must stand before history as a representative of dictatorship and military rule who, with all his qualities as a soldier and a statesman, is in lasting discord with the genius of the English race.
Churchill blasts Cromwell for his actions in Ireland, too, describing them as “merciless wickedness [which] debased the standards of human conduct and sensibly darkened the journey of mankind.”

I cannot give you the precise ethics, because I am a lowly professor in an ag school. I can give you some historical examples and you can decide if they measure up to the DVD set. I will quote the book of Symbols of Diplomacy: Head of State Gifts by Ann Bethel
Thinking objectively, do you honestly believe that the Obama gift measures up? Especially since Brown is not a fan of movies.

Thank God we won’t be embarrassed internationally anymore.
It’s not our fault if Gordon Brown misoverestimated the gift giving occasion.
Historically the gift exchange between heads of state has been kept to $25 or below. I remember Reagan getting Gorbachev a coffee grinder and two bags of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.
How embarrassing for Gordon.
Dorvillian on March 5, 2009 at 4:08 PM

To apologize for his thoughtlessness as a statesman, Obama’s staff just this afternoon emailed Gordon Brown a link to this more appropriate DVD and suggested the rights could be purchased by the BBC forthwith. The hope is that he will it will resurrect Obama’s image in the eyes of Brown and the British people.

Stewart: Yeah man, Wall Street is mad as hell! And they’re not going to take it anymore. Unless by it, you mean two trillion dollars of their own bail out money. That they will take.
Now Mr. Santelli was invited to come on this show and accepted the invitation and then on Friday canceled, or I guess the phrase would be bailed out.
How many people would have liked to see Santelli come on this program, are you listening? Are you listening, Rick Santelli? You see, Rick Santelli is angry that these loser home owners are going to get bailed out. He believes in personal responsibility, he believes in not rewarding the losers for missing all the warning signs. For God’s sake, the guy works at CNBC. They’re the best of the best.”

getalife on March 5, 2009 at 4:23 PM
To me that statement show how inept Obama is, not that Brown was terrible. He is the leader of the US and should not let his personal grievances, no matter how justified they may be, cloud his ability to keep an ally happy. FDR and Churchill loathed Stalin, but they were nice to him in all ways possible to make sure the Alliance held together. Alienating our closest ally is never good policy. He instulted Brown in almost every way he could other than calling him a “doody head” while he was here. No dimplomatic protocols given, press kept at bay, no joint press conferences, pretty much he was treated like a high class donor.

I am not saying the gift will destroy our friendship. The gift is more like the cherry on top of a disaster of a visit. Unless some serious fecal matter hits a fan Britain and America will be allies for the foreseeable future. Obama openly insulted Brown by his actions. When your best friend, who helped you out in your time of need, comes over for dinner; you don’t send him to a kiddy table to eat corn dogs while you go and talk with the grown-ups. You put out the fine china, cook the best meal you can, and talk about how wonderful he was for helping you.

Apparently not a priority for this Administration.
Guess when One is too busy still learning about ruling the world, with an army of “yes men” all around Him, protocol means nothing.
On the diplomatic front, if you pay attention to history, more than one relationship between nations has been sent down the dumper because of a diplomatic faux pas.
Yugoslavia had a major NATO-Yugo impasse when the US Air Force Band out of Ramstein played the former Royal Yugoslavian National Anthem at a Euro-Cup soccer match in Luxembourg back in the 1980′s, televised live all across Europe, to include Yugoslavia. The “jugs” backed out of all meetings with all NATO members at a time when Tito was ripe for skipping out completely from under the Soviet yoke and looked to NATO as his new best friend. Wonder how that Serbia, Kosovo, Croatia thingie years alter would have worked out had this little diplomatic slip not happened?
Just a minor thing…royalist national anthem being played for a clearly non-royalist nation.
But, just protocol…not all that big a deal…
