Obama the Cheapskate: 25 DVDs for Gordon Brown?

posted at 2:10 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The British have begun to worry about the “special relationship” in the Anglosphere since the election of Barack Obama.  First, the visit from Gordon Brown failed to get the usual Rose Garden joint-presser treatment from the White House this week.  Now the Daily Mail reports that Obama cheaped out on the traditional gift exchange, rustling up some DVDs in exchange for a thoughtful gift from Brown:

Gordon Brown has been given a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama.

The Prime Minister flew home from his successful trip to Washington this morning with the ‘special collector’s box’ of films hidden in his luggage.

No 10 had tried to keep the present a secret, refusing to answer reporters who asked what President Obama had given to mark the reaffirmation of the special relationship.

Wow.  You know, Amazon often sells collections like that at steep discounts, even in Blu-Ray.  Thankfully, Obama saved the US taxpayers a few bucks.  I’m sure that Brown put a similarly negligent amount of thought into his gift, right?  Right?

Er …

Mr Brown’s gifts included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President.

Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.

Another treasure given to the U.S. President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.

Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

Brown also brought gifts for Obama’s daughters, a rather gracious act, especially considering the reciprocity.  The Daily Mail also notes that Brown isn’t a film buff anyway, which makes the DVD set rather pointless.

People objected when Obama returned the bust of Winston Churchill to the British Embassy, which had loaned it to George Bush eight years ago.  I didn’t find that surprising, especially given the history of Obama’s grandfather, or at least how Obama understands it.  I’d not likely keep a bust of Oliver Cromwell in the West Wing if I were President, gift or not, for similar reasons.  (I’m an admirer of Churchill, though.)

However, this seems like a rather deliberate insult, or at best diplomatic incompetence.  It’s one thing to cheap out on a gift for a friend or relative at Christmas, but the British have stood by the US for many long decades, through some very dark times.  Despite unpopularity at home, they remained at our side in Iraq and Afghanistan.  They deserve a little more effort from this administration, and a hell of a lot more appreciation.

Update: Ace and Moe Lane have more thoughts about the thoughtlessness, which extends to the First Lady as well.  Two plastic replicas of Marine One from the White House gift store for Brown’s sons?  Wow.  Don’t strain a biceps with that effort, Mrs. Obama.

Update II: People wonder why I took a shot at Oliver Cromwell.  All one has to do is read about his campaigns in Ireland, which amounted to a brutal ethnic cleansing, to understand, but even apart from that, Cromwell was a rather despicable figure.  Ironically, I can quote Winston Churchill from his History of the English-Speaking Peoples as an authority:

If in a tremendous crisis Cromwell’s sword had saved the cause of Parliament, he must stand before history as a representative of dictatorship and military rule who, with all his qualities as a soldier and a statesman, is in lasting discord with the genius of the English race.

Churchill blasts Cromwell for his actions in Ireland, too, describing them as “merciless wickedness [which] debased the standards of human conduct and sensibly darkened the journey of mankind.”

I’m not surprised that the exchange was one-sided. It’s ALL about the slave trader in chief’s sense of entitlement, ya’ know.

My collie says:

I just want to know one thing — did the POTUS make an offer to Brown that in any way resembled “I will give you all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor, if you will just bow down and worship me” ? If he did, I’m glad Brown refused.

CyberCipher on March 5, 2009 at 2:46 PM

I have an Air Force One gift set that includes a little Marine One purchased from the Nixon library. I love it and think it is kind of cool. But I wouldn’t dream of giving it as a diplomatic gift.

It’s telling and that’s why it’s not a nothing story. It sort of crystallizes who the Obamas are. Those little things indicate a lot about character and graciousness. (Of which we’ve seen none in this WH).

INC on March 5, 2009 at 2:46 PM

After a little research I found out what Obama gave Brown. I did a search for the movie list on the internet and it came up with “AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition) (1-25)”. Amazon has it listed for sale for $99.98. Way to go Obama. Priceless historical artifact for a DVD set worth $100. Way to go Obama!

Does anyone see the irony in Barry giving On the Waterfront as part of this collection?
Dubn8tr on March 5, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Not only that, but the collection included three copies of “Zulu Dawn” which depicted a British army being annihilated by black warriors at Isandlwhana.

I know a bunch of antiwar movies came out, but I don’t remember any of them other than Redacted

Agree, although I am no fan of Brown, he deserves utmost respect when he visits as the leader of our closest ally.

The Browns gave great thought and concern on their gifts to the Obamas.

The Obamas rushed down to Sam’s Club, got a DVD set (which won’t even work in the UK!) and then snapped up a couple cheap-ass plastic helicopter sets from the WH Gift Shop.

I have never been so embarrassed on behalf our country before. Obama makes Dhimmy Carter look like a thougtful patriot.

Thanks for the polite correction. You’re right. I was in a hurry to post and it was the first name that popped into my mind.

Anyone want to make any bets as to what the One will give to the Kenyan Head of State? The commenters on AOSHQ were convinced all the snubs to the British and their PM were race based…payback for all the racist actions of the British Empire.

He’ll probably offer him the keys to Fort Knox.

As for Obama’s rude, classless behavior towards the British P.M., I don’t give a rat’s a$$ about Obama’s Kenyan father (the lying, drunken, Commie who abandoned Obama), or his goat-herding Kenyan grandfather, or any of his radical Muslim Kenyan relatives. When Obama’s acting in his capacity as President of the United States, he is representing this nation. It’s not about him or his Kenyan relatives or their grievances against Britain. Britain is one of the U.S.’s oldest, most important, and most loyal allies. If that fact makes Obama personally uncomfortable, that’s just too damn bad.

Do you want a cigarette and a blindfold? What do you think the purpose of the Porkulus is?

I don’t get the criticism.
0 also gave Brown a case of Malt Liquor and a box of Phillie Blunts.

Case of 40′s and a bag of KGB.

Pretty low-bidder behavior from BHO. Sort of like forgetting you were invited to a birthday party then racing around the living room looking for a lamp, or ash tray, or book you can re-purpose. I wonder if there was a gift tag on the box “To BHO from HC”

bob53186 on March 5, 2009 at 3:03 PM

I’m surprised Obama didn’t give Brown a painting of the new stimulus bill symbol on black velvet.

Christina_M on March 5, 2009 at 3:04 PM

But listen to ABC news on the radio….fawning as ever and no mention of this “disgrace”. They love to say PRESIDENT Obama and will always cast him in a favorable light.

They will tolerate any lie as long as it’s prettily stated with his wonderful baritone.

WORDS speak louder than ACTIONS these days.

So if Bamster gave Brown gobmint cheese or turds in a bowl as long as he said Brits are “special” the media will take it at face value.

I hear that ballerina boy’s dance recitals were included in the not-much-there “package” of dvd’s

It was a 25-pack of BVDs. The accompanying note read: “Hope I don’t make you change them too often! XOXO, Barry”
