Obama loses two more nominees

posted at 9:15 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

And this one’s just strange.  Without much explanation, CNN announced that their very own Obama administration nominee, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, would decline his appointment as Surgeon General.  That makes … how many appointments to fail in the Greatest Transition Evah?  And the countin’s not done yet:

CNN correspondent Sanjay Gupta has withdrawn his name from consideration as the nation’s next surgeon general, opting to continue to devote time to his reporting and his medical career.

The choice of Gupta raised eyebrows from the beginning.  People wondered why Obama would have selected a media doctor rather than someone with more real experience in managing health systems or research.  However, since the role of Surgeon General more or less parallels that of CNN Health Correspondent — look good on camera and deliver scripted lines — the criticism was mild.  Most assumed that Obama wanted a little star power on his team.

Also, Obama lost Tim Geithner’s choice for Deputy Secretary of the Treasury tonight:

The person Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wanted as his chief deputy withdrew from consideration Thursday, dealing a setback to the agency as it struggles to address the worst financial crisis in decades.

Annette Nazareth, a former senior staffer and commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, made “a personal decision” to withdraw from the process, according to a person familiar with her decision.

As Jazz Shaw noted, John Tyler held the record for Cabinet flops in a transition with four.  Obama has three, but Gupta and Nazareth don’t quite qualify as Cabinet appointments, so Jazz’s count for Obama remains at three.  With Nancy Killefer before and perhaps Chas Freeman on the way out now, this is looking more like the rule than the exception.

Still, maybe at some point, we’ll get the media to recognize that their obsequious hosannas to the Obama transition had no relation to the truth.

Open letter to President Obama:

Dear President Obama,
You promised us change during the campaign. You filled our hearts with hope during your historic election. Your transition was touted as one to rise above the challenges of the past.

Now that you have had 4 appointees withdraw for various reasons, you can be confident in the fact that the American people will revere you even more if you also withdraw from office.

Consider the HISTORIC implications of such BOLD and DECICIVE action. We have great hope in our future and want you to know that that hope will not be diminished should you step down. Additionally, once out of office, you will have much more time to spend with your lovely wife Michelle and volunteer at the soup kitchen. Consider your kids too, they’re not getting any younger, and the pressures of holding the office of president have no doubt pulled you away from your family. And not to mention your hair – its only been a few weeks, so maybe that grey hair will go away absent Rahm’s incessant texting on your blackberry.

Anyway – I just wanted to let you know that we’re thinking of you and only want what is in your best interest.

Mmmmm, bear in mind that Michael Moore has also dissed Gupta (for not liking his healthcare propaganda film). And that Indians are fair game, not being dependent on liberals’ largesse to get ahead, so it’s OK to be racist towards them.

Scene: Whitehouse press room. A very confident President Obama stands at the podium center stage, the seal of the office hangs behind him on a blue-curtained background. Members of the press have filed in and are finding their seats. The president gives one more check of his teleprompter and begins to address the reporters.

Obama: I have called this meeting today to announce my new choice for Surgeon General. As you know, my previous choice, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, has dropped out for personal reasons.

Reporter: (raising hand and standing up) Mr. president, is it true that he was fired for not being bat-crap crazy enough to for your administration?

Obama: If you would please save your questions for later. There will be plenty of time to ask them once I have made the announcement and left the stage. Now, getting to the announcement. I have been wracking my brain for long nights to find someone more suitable and more qualified for the position and I can say with some confidence that tonight you will meet a man who is perhaps the most qualified in this world to act as the Surgeon General of our great nation. (Motions to his side, a bearded fat man in a white robe appears and approaches the podium). Ladies and gentlemen, meet Meldor.

(Reporters burst into polite smattering of applause, Meldor takes the podium).

Meldor: Thank you, Mr. president. Thank you all.

Reporter: Ah, excuse me Mr. Meldor–

Meldor: It’s just “Meldor”, thank you. I have no last name.

Reporter: Oh, okay, “Meldor” could you please tell us what makes you so imminently qualified?

Meldor: Well, I am a great healer. I am what you would call a “White Mage”.

Reporter: Excuse me — a … White …

Medlor: A White Mage. I cast white magics to support the fighting characters in a party while on quests. I can cast very useful spells such as “Cure”, “Esuna”, or the more powerful “Cura”.

Other reporter (standing up): So … you’re a character from Final Fantasy.

Meldor: Yes. Well, I belong to a class from Final Fantasy.

Other Reporter: The video game.

Meldor: The RPG. Yes.

Other Reporter: Prove it.

Meldor: You mean you want me to cast a spell?

Other Reporter: Yeah. Look, here’s Helen Thomas, she’s on in her years. Cast a spell on her.

Meldor: If you insist. (rolls up sleeves and wiggles fingers towards Helen) Cura!

(The numbers 132 appear above Helen’s head)

Helen Thomas: (not sure if it worked) Well, I feel a little bit better…

Other reporter: Wait! You only gave her 132 hit points!

Third reporter: Yeah, what the hey! That was weak!

(Meldor shakes his head)

Other reporter: Mr. Mel– Meldor, what level are you?

Meldor: I am ah … I am a level 15 (reporters burst into laughter) But I am getting stronger everyday! (More laughter, Obama pushes Meldor aside)

Obama: Clearly, there have been some communication issues regarding the vetting process. I, ah, thought I requested a level fifty– (looking up, in total astonishment) What the — ! (points to the back of the room) Rush Limbaugh and Brad Pitt are making out in the back!!

(The entire press corps gets to its feet and turn their cameras on the back of the room. Obama grabs Meldor by the nape of his robe and leaves the room before anyone can notice.)

Certainly says a lot about an administration when so many nominees have had to decline their appointments before the administration is even settled in. It also says a lot about the sort of people Obama likes to work with and thinks are up to the task of running the United States Government.

But of course the drive by media will never criticize Obama for his poor choices in this respect, instead they will probably just try to find a way to blame it on the Republicans, Conservatives or Rush Limbaugh.

Revrum’ Wright probably could help Obambi scare up a witch doctor from somewhere for Surgeon General.

Hoover could have pointed the finger at Silent Cal but was too much of a man to do so. In an era when the Clintonian habit of passing the buck was more often precluded by honor.

viking01 on March 5, 2009 at 11:59 PM

Forgive me if someone’s mentioned this already, but my guess about Gupta is that Obama’s vetters finally just realized, and I’m paraphrasing an old TV ad campaign, that Gupta’s not a real doctor, but he plays one on TV.

As far as Geithner’s subordinates are concerned, I’m betting these nominees are all looking at the current situation and noting what Obama’s plans are, and they don’t want any part of this. It’s kind of like getting an offer to be an assistant coach for the Detroit Lions two games into the season. Who really wants epic fail on his or her resume?

Let’s face it. When Geithner finally fills all the slots on his staff, the staff will consist of employees of the caliber of George Costanza and Kramer from Seinfeld.

Hoover was guilty of a lot of the mistakes FDR made down the pike in fact FDR cribbed about 95% of Hoover’s response and then garnished it with Constitutional overreach in a fit of “I do not want the salt to lose its savor”

sven10077 on March 6, 2009 at 12:11 AM

I’m not saying Hoover is blameless just that many of the problems he encountered were the result of Wilson and the bills for some of Wilson’s decisions finally coming due. Harding didn’t help much either.

with a fair press it’d be a hard sell for them given their “hey look at the calender 9/11/01 happened on Bush’s watch” routine but with what we’ve got as a press right now it’ll work unless we go for their throats out of the gate….

sven10077 on March 6, 2009 at 12:35 AM

Agreed. I suspect the press is depending on a poorly educated public to make selling Obama easier. Though now that even the Libs’ 401ks are starting to look like 50ks some of the Left may snap out of their trance. Sadly, Obama was smart enough to choose Biden as VP knowing no one would dare want Biden to succeed him.

Scientologists are famously opposed to pharmaceuticals, and Mr. Cruise has been especially outspoken in that believe. If you want to get the nation accustomed to a devastated, nationalized, stagnant pharmaceutical industry, the easiest way is to convert them to Scientology. And given the way Scientology usually welcomes high-profile celebrities, something tells me Barack Obama’s first e-meter readings would turn out to be fabulous… He’s probably a fully operant Thetan already! Matticus Finch on March 6, 2009 at 11:05 AM

Almost anyone would be better than what we actually got, but this does seem like it would have been Romney’s moment. Isn’t it interesting how the voters almost always nominate a Presidential candidate to solve one crisis, but a different crisis turns out to be lurking on the far side of Election Day? Republicans nominated McCain (to the extent Republicans actually selected him) because they thought firm foreign policy and military leadership were the most important qualities in a candidate, while Democrats turned to Obama on racialist/moral grounds (he’s the avatar of “hope,” it’s racist not to vote for him), a yearning for his fairy-tale solutions to foreign policy problems, and because he seemed to be the candidate least like the hated Bush.

Now we get to March 2009 and find out what we really needed was someone with sound business instincts and a good grasp of economics, someone able to rescue a government in crisis. That sounds most like Romney’s resume, and to a lesser extent Giuliani’s. (Giuliani did manage to rescue a huge city teetering on the brink of collapse from its own worse tendencies, after all.) McCain’s economic credentials were thin, to say the least, and Obama does not appear to understand what an economy is, other than regarding it as a magical ATM that dispenses cash to spend on social programs and vote buying.

It’s much like the way Clinton defeated Bush because the voters were persuaded he would be able to improve “the worst economy in the last 50 years,” and would be better than Bush I at reducing the deficit. (Don’t laugh – it’s true. Perot’s remarkably successful third party run was based almost entirely on a platform of deficit reduction. Those were the days, huh?) Once Clinton got into office, the economy rolled into a boom he had nothing to do with, based on a new technology that barely existed when he was campaigning, although he deserves sincere credit for not interfering in the new economy as much as he could have. Instead, the great crisis turned out to be foreign policy, which everyone thought was a non-issue after Gulf War I was concluded… and Clinton was a spectacular failure at this, leading to the Islamist terrorist crisis of the 2000s.

Voters are like bad generals: they always seem to be fighting the wrong war.

Maybe Barry needs a different token Republican in his Administration, since he didn’t get Judd Gregg.

How about Bill Frist? At least he’s a real doctor.

You’re probably right on this one. McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin looked good in August, when people were complaining about $4/gallon gasoline, but the October surprise of the bank failures sent the McCain campaign reeling, and McCain didn’t have the smarts and/or cojones to blame it on Democrats who forced banks to make bad loans, and Obama just blamed it on Bush. Bush didn’t help himself by blaming Wall Street instead of the Democrats.

McCain might have won the election if he had announced Romney as his Treasury Secretary in October, then sent him front-and-center in the media to announce his plans.

We could sure use Romney in a position of power right now…but oh heavens, he’s a Mormon!

Steve Z on March 6, 2009 at 11:42 AM

maybe at some point, we’ll get the media to recognize that their obsequious hosannas to the Obama transition had no relation to the truth.

Yeah, that’ll happen at about the same time that Obama admits that he’s not really “very good” at being president, as he told some media types last week.

The stunning incompetence of this bed crapping administration marches on.

Who would have ever thought electing an unqualified, unaccomplished jackass to the highest office in the land, would cause this many problems?

Next time, let’s just draw straws. We’ll undoubtedly get a better President out of it than Bammy, so we’ll have that going for us.

Link?

Because if that’s true, I’ll have to record it.

It’s the most intelligent thing I’ve heard Bammy say yet, if it is true.

Gives me hope he’ll wise up and resign, after getting Biden and Pelosi to agree to resign along with him.

I LOVE THIS. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! BURN B. HUSSEIN OBAMA. BURN YOUR PATHETIC CHARADE AS PRESIDENT TO THE GROUND. THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING, I FULLY BELIEVE ALL HIS DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS (HIS TRUE FATHER, ETC.)WILL SLOWLY START ROLLING OUT FOR ALL OF THE WORLD TO SEE. AT LEAST I CAN HOPE THEY WILL. TRUST ME, I AM PRAYING HARD EVERY DAY FOR THIS ALL TO COME TRUE. HARDER THAN YOU COULD EVER, EVER, EVER IMAGINE.

Unfortunately we are into this failure in government for the long run.
Were Lovebama resign or be impeached we wold be stuck with Biden who can’t even remember where he gets his coffee in the morning, lies constantly and is too dumb to rememder the last lie.
Then of course is third in line the former princess of Baltimore now the queen of Haight-Ashbery Ms. Pelosi.
Followed by the ancient Grand Klugan of the KKK Sheets Byrd.
Rush is right elections have consequences.

You practically took the words out of my mouth, getalife.

…except I get the impression I would have intended more irony than you did.

(Kind of like how I might say something like this: We really shouldn’t get distracted by all these little fits and starts of this transition.)
