Obama can’t break the teleprompter habit, either; Update: Tapper and Sawyer in August

posted at 5:10 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Rumors about Barack Obama’s addiction have crept around the capital for the last few weeks, but no one has wanted to explicitly report it until Politico did so this afternoon.  Has Obama relapsed on smoking?  Do his massive government spending plans indicate an acute gambling problem?  No, in this case, Obama has another crutch:

President Barack Obama doesn’t go anywhere without his TelePrompter.

The textbook-sized panes of glass holding the president’s prepared remarks follow him wherever he speaks.

Resting on top of a tall, narrow pole, they flank his podium during speeches in the White House’s stately parlors. They stood next to him on the floor of a manufacturing plant in Indiana as he pitched his economic stimulus plan. They traveled to the Department of Transportation this week and were in the Capitol Rotunda last month when he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln in six-minute prepared remarks.

Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is unusual – not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events large and small.

After the teleprompter malfunctioned a few times last summer and Obama delivered some less-than-soaring speeches, reports surfaced that he was training to wean himself off of the device while on vacation in Hawaii. But no luck.

This may be news to the throngs of Obamabots who elected him, but not to those of us who paid attention to Obama on the campaign trail.  When he had the TelePrompters, he made crowds swoon.  When he didn’t, though, things would go terribly wrong.  Most of the fumbles on the campaign trail — such as Iran being a “tiny” and therefore no threat, America not being “what it once was”, came when Obama had to go off script.  Once, his TelePrompter failed for a couple of moments and he stammered until someone apparently fixed it.

It’s not exactly news among the media, either, but they didn’t exactly trip all over themselves to report it.  Give CNN a small credit for mentioning Obama’s crutch once in the midst of a flurry of criticism of Sarah Palin for her lack of extemporaneous talent:

The Democratic presidential nominee has never tried to hide the fact he delivers speeches off the device, though normally he doesn’t use one at standard campaign rallies and town hall events.

But the Illinois senator used a teleprompter at both his Colorado events Monday — making for a particularly peculiar scene in Pueblo, where the prompter was set up in the middle of what is normally a rodeo ring.

This came two weeks after the Obama campaign derided Palin for using a speechwriter, which CNN failed to mention in its report and which the rest of the media ignored. They liked painting Palin as some sort of empty suit, and heralding Obama as a secular messiah with wisdom rolling off his tongue at every occasion.  They swallowed the meme gladly from Team Obama.

Look, a TelePrompter is a tool, like anything else, and using the right tool for the right job is part of competent performance.  Using it a press briefings, though, looks more like Obama is helpless without a script than a man relying on technology for success.  Had the media paid attention to Obama’s disastrous off-script performances during the campaign, he might not be at the podium at all now.

Update: The video’s been pulled, but Jake Tapper told Diane Sawyer in August about Obama’s TelePrompter crutch.  Video here.  And while I always enjoy my friend T-Steel’s posts, his criticism about this not being a real story runs a little cold when we count up the I-hate-Rush posts his co-bloggers have piled up over at TMV the last couple of weeks.

Regardless, it was a better education than what some Ivy League schools have to offer.

youngTXcon on March 5, 2009 at 8:04 PM

I feel the same way. I had an extraordinary education because of the size of the school.

I got my Masters Degree at Johns Hopkins. Undergraduates at this school pay tens of thousands for what is essentially the same basic courses available at any college. And I remain unconvinced that the quality of the education improves when it comes to English 101.

Ed, Allah, et al;

I suggest a different motive for the teleprompter. While he does use it while giving a speech, and no one would deny it’s benefits for that, I wonder if the teleprompter is also being used as an answer machine.

He seems to hem and haw for a few seconds when asked an off-script question, then SHAZAM!, from out of nowhere comes a perfect-pitch answer.

I don’t have the time or resources to compare his answers without a prompter vs. with a prompter, but I’m willing to bet he performs eloquently only with a prompter.

Yeah, my background is not in this field,

Me neither. I come from Mathematics – the other side of the world from Law.

but as I understand it it’s not unusual for former politicians, ex-judges, or whatnot to get these sorts of jobs. If the person was accomplished in their field — but they didn’t publish academic papers or books — then the Senior Lecturer position provides the prestige of a faculty slot and brings prestige to the institution by having that person associated with them.

Spectacularly failed dems and leftists get automatic positions at the Kennedy School. The rest are parceled out among the “lesser” institutions.

The part that seems odd to me is that at the time Obama was hired by the U of C (which is my alma mater, incidentally) he had really accomplished very little, either in the legal profession or in politics.

He did have the Precedency of the Law Review, which should have been enough of a “credential” to get him a position anywhere. The fact that he started as a plain adjunct (1992-1996) seems pretty odd, in that context.

I accept that he may have been good in the classroom, but to be recruited several times for a tenure-track (aka “real”) faculty position without a single scholarly publication is bizarre.

I’m sorry to say that I suspect the U of C’s eagerness to recruit Obama reflects more than even the desire to hire a minority faculty member. It really appears to be because of the “favors” Obama did for the university.

Really disgusting.

Y-not on March 5, 2009 at 8:09 PM

No question about that. You know academia. Affirmative action in faculty hiring is totally out of control. It’s beyond ridiculous.

You forget all the money of the Annenberg Challenge that he wasted.

“There were no statistically significant differences between Annenberg schools and non-Annenberg schools in rates of achievement gain” and that “any improvements were much like those occurring in demographically similar non-Annenberg schools.”

Behavior was worse.

Classroom behavior, students’ sense of self-efficacy, and social competence were weaker in 2001 than before the Challenge. Like student academic achievement, there were no statistically significant differences in these outcomes between Annenberg schools and non-Annenberg schools.

Statement Regarding Barack Obama

The Law School has received many media requests about Barack Obama, especially about his status as “Senior Lecturer.”

From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School’s Senior Lecturers has high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.

In legal circles, this is what is known as “resume padding.” Full tenure positions require significant scholarly work and publication. Ghostwritten autobiographies do not count.

I don’t know why it is so hard for liberals to accept that Obama basically shucked and jived his way into the White House, without any serious accomplishment or scholarship along the way. I thought they were all opposed to meritocracy and supported affirmative action!

I want to see Jake Tapper ask Gibbs a question about this. Speaking of Gibbs, maybe he should use Obama’s prompter…

youngTXcon on March 5, 2009 at 8:10 PM

I have yet to see Tapper get a straightforward, coherent answer from Gibbs. I’ve started checking Tapper almost daily for his WH questions just to see if anything changes. Gibbs gives basically the same non-answer to every question.

I am sure that it was more than just his color. The U of C appears to have benefitted financially. It’s really infuriating.

After the election the University sent out one or two emails celebrating Obama, including proudly claiming that he was being referred to as “the University of Chicago president.” And he was profiled in the alumni magazine, resulting in a flurry of negative letters.

Lately… not so much. Perhaps having to send the alumni those somber letters from the President about the endowment’s poor performance and the announcement of cut backs at the med school (including eliminating Michelle Ma Belle’s incredibly important VP position, oddly enough) has helped the university re-think its enthusiasm.

Or maybe some of the B-school alumni are withholding their donations.

Y-not on March 5, 2009 at 8:23 PM

Nothing about that is incorrect. He said Iran is tiny compared to the Soviet Union, and that the threat they pose is not as serious as the threat posed by the Soviet Union. These are basic facts.

Do you think Iran is capable of annhilating the US via nuclear weapons? If not, then you agree with Obama.

Seriously, Ed. “No” threat (your claim) is obviously different than not posing “a serious threat…the way the Soviet Union posed a threat” (what Obama actually said). Surely you’re intellectually honest enough to admit this.

orange on March 5, 2009 at 5:58 PM

I wonder, were you ever that much of a stickler on “misinformation” concerning, oh, Sarah Palin?

The fact is, Obama was minimizing the threat Iran poses. Is Iran capable of annihilating the US right now? No, but Obama is probably willing to give them plenty of time.

Wasteofalife should realize that the market plunge being experienced now can in no way be blamed on Bush or the previous administration. The market is forward looking, it doesn’t care what happened in the past. If The One’s plans were perceived by the market as resulting in a positive outcome and economic recovery from the Democrat CRA/Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae debacle, the market would be holding steady or possibly rising in anticipation of that economy. That’s not what’s happening though, the market has tanked since Obama’s election. That is not the sign of a hopeful market anticipating a positive future change. That is a sign of a market that does not trust the one who was brought to power and a market that is not anticipating positive future results.

AZfederalist on March 6, 2009 at 12:37 AM

GaL you like lists?

Well Ogabe is adding geometrically while bush was arithmatically….

now hush I need to go study the profits earnings ratios so I can buy in a market that has dropped 35% since he was annointed….

do you get how stupid that was….we were taught about P/E ratios in the 5th grade at my elementary school in Ohio….?

we are all the market now to one degree or another….
