Minnesota Recount: Reid still not going to seat Franken until certified
posted at 4:25 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
My friend Eric Black did a little digging when he read Politico’s story that Harry Reid might try seating Al Franken while the election contest process continued. Reid earlier backed away from a previous suggestion that he might do so when Senate Republicans vowed to bring the upper chamber to a halt. Since the numbers hadn’t changed since, Black’s skepticism was aroused — and vindicated:
But it made little sense to me, because Reid has long since learned that Senate Repubs are prepared to block the action at least until a certificate is issued. I wondered whether Reid had some indication that the Republican’s cloture-proof 41-member solidarity on the question had changed. I checked with Reid’s able spokester (and native Minnesotan) Jim Manley who confirmed that the stories were wrong, that Republicans are still in position to block any effort to seat Franken without a certificate and that no attempt would be made. …
As for the reference to April that Politico picked up, Reid said only that he was hopeful/optimistic that the court action would be done in April.
The Contest trial could conceivably end by then, but Coleman then has the right to appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. Neither he nor his legal team have said anything definitive, but their recent public rhetoric would suggest they will make at least the first of those appeals. Gov. Tim Pawlenty has said that he doesn’t believe he can issue a certificate until the last appeal is resolved.
At this point, it makes little difference anyway. Had Jim Martin won in Georgia, Reid might have been emboldened to force Franken down the GOP’s throat, but Franken only gets him 59 seats anyway. Such an action might have alienated the Porkulus 3, whose cooperation makes that kind of maneuver unnecessary.
Reid can afford to wait it out. If the contest panel throws out the election altogether, though, he might change his mind — but that’s as big of a long shot as predicting a playoff appearance for the Detroit Lions next year.
Addendum: Eric writes for the center-left MinnPost after a long career in traditional journalism, last at the Star-Tribune as an editor. I’ve known Eric for a few years, and while he and I don’t agree on politics, he’s worth reading on a regular basis. He’s a gracious and generous friend who has often challenged and encouraged me, and his explicitly non-objective work is fairer than most of what we see from supposedly objective reporters.

I would think if the election were thrown out, Reid would be less inclined to play games by trying to seat the fool.

Nuclear power is dead in this country.

Interesting thought…….
………. I wonder how Mr. Teleprompter’s first month in office would sway the re-election towards Coleman.
Can you say “Landslide”?

That’s how I see it. It would be a voter’s referendum on Obama.

Can we just give Minnesota to Canada, and move on?

“Reid still not going to seat Franken until certified.”
Certified? Reid? Franken? Face it, they are both certifiable.

A sad story…without nuclear we will never be independent…and this is something that helps the environment, helps society, employs people.
But it does one thing…once again points to how Obama lied when he said he “is not against nuclear power”…so he is consistent with his lies that he stated in debate.

I guess all the new electric cars will be powered by hamsters on treadmill driven generators. Either that or they will push for technology to reprocess aborted babies into a fuel source. Real People of Geniuses those leftists.

The possibility of Franken in the senate was appalling during the campaign. The narrow Coleman victory was shocking. The re-count madness has been embarassing.
But now, after seeing Obama, with his tacky treatment of allies, he tax cheating cabinet, his foreign policy blunders and the absurdity of the stimulus, the bailouts, the mortgage mess and the stock market…
Well, I no longer care if Franken becomes a senator. He is a joke. This government is a joke.

No, you can’t and won’t give MN to Canada……. there are too many of us conservatives living here…. we’ll fight you other conservatives as well as liberals. Getting very tired of trash MN comments. We few conservatives will kick all your asses if we have to. Sorry, I have a short fuse today.

If Minnesoota, Mitchigan, Oyo, Indiaduh, Swissconsin and Illinoise all want to be part of worker’s paradise version 3.1 we should allow them to go to the grandaddy of the Anglic Nanny states IMHO and I am saying that as a Conservative Ohioan….
sven10077 on March 5, 2009 at 5:07 PM
Coleman obviously won the election. The Dems total approach is to try to use the courts to overturn an election. They tried this with Bush and they are trying it with Coleman. It looks like every close election in the future is going to be just this way.

What is the muslim population in Minnesota? Help me out here Hussein and Soros. Shut up Franken, speak only when Soros gives you permission. Note to Minnesota voters…your brains are frozen!

OI.
Franken is certifiable.
FER SURE.
seejanemom on March 5, 2009 at 5:11 PM
federal law prohibits asking religious questions when trying to determine the population of a group. Muslim population of Mn ranges from 30,000 to 150,000 according to the Federal Bank of MN. Mn has the largest Somali population in the US. Oh, and I carry a concealed weapon for that and sundry other reasons. We may be a minority of MN’s we conservatives… but we’re dangerous if we have to be….. worry about your own states…. none of you are clean.

my state loathsome though it is, is not holding up our ability to have an easier filibuster of Harry Reid thanks….

I think MN is a lovely state. I have learned just a little bit about it through the “Prey” novels by John Sanford.

Your freakoids effect all the USA. You need some civic lessons.
Wade on March 5, 2009 at 5:44 PM
I’m not sure why this is being talked about in an article about the idiot Al Franken, however, I completely agree! I said if we were going spend all of this money it should have been on 50 or 60 nuclear power plants and conversion to natural gas automobiles. Instead, the money is just being used as a payoff to Democrat supporters with little real stimulus. It’s going to lead to hyper inflation and disaster!
CrusaderPatriot on March 5, 2009 at 5:49 PM
Hey, easy turbo…just having some fun.
But you have to admit, there is only one state who messed up the election…I figure Canada is screwed up, they probably wouldn’t even notice Minn.
When you live in a state like that, trust me I lived in Ca. for too many years, it goes with the territory.
At least this year you won the “there is no global warming” debate…just by being.

Send the McLin family out to Canada and call it a day.
This coming from an Ohioan who would rather not have people try to collapse the state – but to put the people to work.

we used to be the pride of the region and now we have convinced ourselves that is just the right number of donks get elected 1981 is coming home….
screw the auto workers slash the state income taxes and corporate tax and make Ohio work at resource exploitation, new industry and for God’s sakes render a right to work law….
instead we’d rather have Dick Celeste 2000….

I know I know…. but the thing that chaps my hide is the fact that so called comedians here on HA will say the things they do about MN. No one thinks, that we few who fought against Franken and his minions aren’t dealing with this every day? You think we don’t understand the battle we’ve fought and will continue to fight?… It’s not funny when you live in a beautiful state and you see stupid people bringing it to ruin because they are primarily frustrated 60′s flower grannies and dads, welfare, illegal immigrant, minority based recipients of government largesse. We few wake up angry. Then to come onto a site, ostensibly somewhat conservative and get ripped for just existing…. sorry, I’m losing my sense of humor.
MNDavenotPC on March 5, 2009 at 6:22 PM
don’t do that sincerely…
look once upon a time MN was a bastion of hardwork….manned by hardy people who valued initiative….then easy living happened….
after Ogabe’s crap’n'trade your region will devolve into New Siberia and the weak will move on….heck I may get exiled there.

Franken would just be the icing on the sh!tcake, wouldn’t he?

I used to pray we’d get O’Franken in to use as a bludgeon in future campaigning but with the 100 delays transition and Chicago Jesus Stock tips we may not need him….
sven10077 on March 5, 2009 at 6:51 PM
You gotta take it in stride. My state (Arizona) was once a beautiful and conservative state. Between the millions of newcomers – Democraps and illegal aliens escaping from their hellholes so they could turn Arizona into the same thing they came from – and Janet Napolitano (newly of Homeland Security, God help us all), it’s hardly recognizable anymore. Half the real estate transactions in the Phx metro area are foreclosures. A few years ago we had a budget surplus, Auntie Jan has left us a billion plus in the hole. Phoenix is the kidnap capitol of the USA.
Chin up, guy, you gotta laugh sometimes to keep from crying.
Shay on March 5, 2009 at 8:27 PM
Really?
Top marginal tax rate in Canada id 29%. Here it will be 39.6% next year. And Canada last year re-elected a Conservative government while we elected a communist.

Oh, but both of your solutions create “green house” gases….what can we do???…..hmmm…..
I’ve got it!….. let’s increase taxes; that will solve it. Oh and spend $7-Trillion in 6 weeks, almost forgot that.
JeffVader on March 6, 2009 at 2:58 AM
All true {applause}, but lets not forget aboooot the Provincial income taxes; up to 18% at a much lower margin than most US states as I recall.
