It begins: RNC member calls for Steele’s resignation

posted at 7:25 pm on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This didn’t take long.  An RNC member called for Michael Steele to resign as chairman of the party after a series of strange gaffes in the media left him floundering for footing, and after reports of chaos within the GOP’s leadership.  The call comes from Dr. Ada Fisher, an African-American herself and the head of the North Carolina party, who called Steele’s performance inept:

Michael Steele should resign as Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman, according to a committee member from North Carolina.

In an e-mail to fellow RNC members obtained by The Hill, Dr. Ada Fisher, North Carolina’s national committeewoman, said Steele is “eroding confidence” in the GOP and that members of his transition team should encourage him to step aside. Fisher added Steele’s personal e-mail address to the e-mail.

“I don’t want to hear anymore [sic] language trying to be cool about the bling in the stimulus package or appealing to D.L. Hughley and blacks in a way that isn’t going to win us any votes and makes us frankly appear to many blacks as quite foolish,” Fisher wrote.

Fisher, who is one of three black members of the national committee, backed South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson, whom Steele edged out in the final round of voting to win the chairmanship in late January. She has voiced repeated opposition to Steele, sending dozens of e-mails to committee members even after Steele won election slamming him for any number of chips that have fallen awry.

Fisher may have an axe to grind, but her response may indicate a rising level of buyers remorse at the RNC.  The Hill doesn’t mention the one incident that will be sure to have angered the committee, Steele’s lack of rebuttal when Hughley characterized the 2008 Republican Convention as looking like a Nazi rally.  Since the RNC staged that event and participants came from the state organizations represented at the RNC — including Fisher herself — the lack of response on that may wind up being more troubling than the Rush Limbaugh contretemps, which has apparently already been smoothed over.

It’s too early to dump Steele, although his performance on the Hughley show was particularly bad.  Pushing him out after less than four weeks is a little unfair.  He deserves more of a chance to atone for his mistakes and correct his errors.

But I would also say that the time for atonement and correction may well be closing.  Instead of focusing on being a pundit in the immediate term, Steele should be replacing all of the people he fired when he won election as chair.  In fact, that should have been his first priority, as the party needs to start working now to build momentum for the midterm elections in 2010.

this just in Howard Dean blacker than Steele….

sven10077 on March 5, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Obviously the first “black” president is going to go down as the worst president in history. How long do you think it will be before the blacks throw him back and disown him.

There’s a betting pool for you.

Virginia Shanahan on March 5, 2009 at 8:14 PM

He will not go down in history as the worst president. Quite the contrary, the media will continue to do whatever it takes to make him out to be the the greatest, and the majority of the country will buy it. The consequences of his failing are too great in the eyes of many. He will not be allowed to fail no mater what reality says.

neuquenguy on March 5, 2009 at 8:33 PM

We know he’s gone. So be merciful on us all and get it over with.

Why?? Another month can mean another trillion spent and another 1000 point drop in the stock market. We need someone leading the RNC now who understands the seriousness of the situation.

Virginia Shanahan on March 5, 2009 at 8:38 PM

And, I agree with Ed that the Nazi Germany crack was far worse than the Rush stuff. For some reason, that’s being kind of swept under the rug in all this.

I’m really let down by Michael not fighting about that remark.

I was called a Nazi and he does nothing about it.

Would Blackwell have even wasted a second on that show? NO.

Sapwolf on March 5, 2009 at 8:39 PM

Steele is fine for now. There’s no need to create a ruckass firing him.

The reality is he’s trying to do too much. He needs to focus on shoring up the RNC structure, and stop sticking his face into the media. His priority should be to hire a couple experienced conservative talk show hardened attack dogs to handle the RNC media interface — sort of like the role that Carville plays for the DNC.

After all, the DNCs clown head made quite a fool of himself in public until his role was defined to be one out of the media spotlight, not in front of it.

droofus on March 5, 2009 at 8:22 PM

The trouble with that though is… if Steele disappears and others are talking for him the libs will smell blood in the water… Mock him for hiding …try to bringem’ out of hiding and if he slips again…and he will…it will be worse…Steele has to go NOW…get it behind us…

jerrytbg on March 5, 2009 at 8:41 PM

I am not ready to throw in the towel on Mr. Steele. Since his election there have been several attempts not only by Mr. Steele but others to mimic urban slang and dialect. It gives the appearance of an adult trying to be a young person and it seldom does anything but make the adult look foolish. It has been cringe worthy.

Cindy Munford on March 5, 2009 at 8:44 PM

The same clueless individuals who brought us the unqualified Sarah Palin, gave us Michael Steele. The GOP has become the affirmative action party. Steele, the new voice of the Republican Party?

“I strongly support affirmative action” – Michael Steele (The Washington Post, October 30, 2006)

“You draw the line. I mean, what do you need an assault weapon for?” – Michael Steele (Washington Post, October 14, 2006)

In the final analysis Steele’s future as head of the RNC will be determined by the phrase ‘follow the money’. If Steele cannot attract donors to the GOP cause he will be gone in short order and it will be deserved; but if he is to reverse the initial recalcitrance of many Republicans members not to donate to the GOP again, then he may be able to save his job. Of course if he lasts until November, the results of the Governor’s races in NJ and Virginia and the House seat in New York will also have a huge impact on his future.

Fun Facts about NC GOP Pres. Ada Fisher. She’s also Jewish. A black Jewish Republican. I need to touch her just in case she’s the last of her kind.

Not so Fun Facts (i.e., sad) about Dr. Fisher. She presided over the collapse of the NC GOP this November. Pretty much losing everywhere.

Apologetic California on March 5, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Almost no blacks at the GOP convention last summer, didn’t see any blacks at CPAC. The GOP has lost the black vote, probably for generations. Guys like Tancredo scared away the hispanic vote and the neanderthal policies of the gop chased the 18- 29 year old vote. I’m thinking the coronation of Rush “Jobba the Hut” Limbaugh as the defacto party head might be a step in the wrong direction. But if a party is going to self destruct, they might as well go whole hog (no pun intended)

The Dem’s go after the “black” vote. The Republicans invite people of any race who share certain philosophical beliefs. They don’t make that very clear imho to minorities like AA’s and Hispanics who are often socially conservative. There are almost no Jews there either–same reason.

Republicans/Conservatives should make the invitations and the philosophies abundantly clear. But you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. You’re invited too. If you decline, that’s your choice.

I say Steele should get one more month or two to wow us. Firing him is really bad PR, especially if he turns against the GOP because of it. He’s a bit on the moderate side to start with, I could see him going blue dog Dem. However, if he keeps screwing up, well, someone’s got to step in sometime. Its too important.

Priceless. The libs coronate Limbaugh as the head of the republican party and then they lament that it might be a step in the wrong direction.

neuquenguy on March 5, 2009 at 9:20 PM

Imagine if Sarah Palin had screwed up her introductory or convention speech. The knives would have been out to invoke the Eagleton option against her.

How critical we were of Jindal (I was one) for his poor rebuttal to the Messiah’s SOTU!

And now we have Michael Steele mispeaking or being too compliant.

Folks, I have been consistent. I believe that Steele should stay on the job, but the key is whether he will be able to convince the base to donate to the GOP, get Republicans elected and even more important that purging the 3 libtards Amigos (Snowe, Collins and Specter)to change the primary system so that Democrats do not have undue influence to who the Presidentlal candidiate for the GOP is in 2012.

If Steele cannot accomplish this and in addition communicate a solid conservative message then yes, he has to go. But please give him a chance.

Didn’t care for that myself. My heritage is half Danish/half German Lutheran. I still remember grandparents telling stories about rabid American patriots disrupting Divine Service in their churches and wreaking havoc, hurling insults, calling them Kaiser-loving Krauts and ordering them back to the fatherland, terrorizing the little girls, pulling their pigtails, etc. This was not exclusive to my German grandparents, it also happened to my Danish grandparents because to Midwesterners “we all looked and sounded alike” to them.
Nope. I didn’t like him all but agreeing that yes, we may have been Nazis, but that would change with him as head of the party.

I understand the points you are making sven10077 and thecountofincognito. This whole thing just seems odd to me. It’s like bizzaro world got a little more bizzare.

Steele needs to stay… for now. Realistically, he probably has until about 2010-11 to prove his mettle, unless he keeps screwing up in public. His first big test at his primary job is the mid-terms. If he can stop putting his foot in the mouth, raise some $ and pick up a few seats, he’ll be fine.

Don’t get me wrong, he flubbed big-time. He was just placed into the position, and you almost never fire the coach after his first game. End of the season, though, different story.

I just want to know why the GOP are not out on TV blasting all of the dems pork barrel, economy ruining, hyproctitical ideas. The dems have given the republican a gold mine and the GOP instead of taking this and running with it, they are caught up with Rush and all the in fighting. Grow Up and Get to WORK! This is getting pathetic.

Call me crazy, but I just have this…gut feeling that we’re going to need someone who can get our business as a nation “back on track” in 2012. I’m not here to bash Sarah, my joke about keeping the money warm notwithstanding, I’ll strongly support her if she wins the nomination, I just think we really do need a guy like Romney as president to face the particular challenges we’re facing in these times.

thecountofincognito on March 5, 2009 at 10:17 PM

“I don’t want to hear anymore [sic] language trying to be cool about the bling in the stimulus package or appealing to D.L. Hughley and blacks in a way that isn’t going to win us any votes and makes us frankly appear to many blacks as quite foolish,” Fisher wrote.

Amen sistah. It’s fine to use the lingo while playing around here on blogs. But business is bidness.

baldilocks on March 5, 2009 at 10:18 PM

I’m not understanding this. Most wanted Steele and thought he would be a good, now because of a misunderstanding with Rush we are going to throw him under the bus?

Giving Sharpton a standing ovation and not defending his own party when we’re called NAZIs has nothing to do Rush. I got fed up with him when he started courting babykillers and knew it would only go downhill from there. Sadly, my expectations of him have been fully met.

Instead of eating our own, can we please start getting together and fighting Obama? Please?

Jesse on March 5, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Steele’s eating our own. Which makes him not our own really.

And if I were coach/head of the party and went on O’Reilley’s show and he said my convention looked like it full of a bunch of *N* word people and I intimated yes, it had been, but that will change under my leadership I ought to be given a pass and stay on as coach? Yeah, right! :::rolls eyes:::

Steele was the “exciting” pick in a field of less than ideal choices, to say the least. I wasn’t aware he hadn’t replaced those staffers until I read this discussion.

I was already let down by him after watching several of his appearances after picking up the position. He seems a lot more wishy-washy than before, but I suppose before he wasn’t taking the heavy fire from the left that he is now.

Sadly, he doesn’t seem up to the challenge, but I’ll give him a second chance (although waiting till he helps blow 2010 for us would be a mistake if he doesn’t improve quickly.)

thecountofincognito on March 5, 2009 at 10:28 PM

The problem is not only the Limbaugh incident, it’s Steele constant obsession with being in front of the camera or making a fool out of himself by being hip-hop.
Not only that, he still did not fill any of the positions needed in the RNC.
Embarrassing and irresponsible.
As Limbaugh said, Steele needs to stop trying to act cute and go on all these media tours and start restructuring the party.
RNC needs some cajones and kick Steele out. Get Blackwell in there or if they can, NEWT!

jencab on March 5, 2009 at 10:46 PM

It does look bad that Steele can’t even control a conversation with someone like DL Hughley. Perhaps we do need a new chairman since Steele doesn’t seem to have much of a backbone. He seems more caught up in his newfound celebrity at the expense of his own party.

I would agree with you on Romney as the best choice if Sarah Palin was not fiscally conservative and did not know how to balance a budget and generate economic growth.

But on a government level Sarah can run a government and put money in the pockets of average people. Also with her ability to attract thousands in SRO performances that is why I give her the edge.

Contrary to popular opinion I think Romney would make a fine President. My doubts with him is in his ability to convert his intellect and economic acumen into votes.

technopeasant on March 5, 2009 at 11:05 PM

Sorry Ed, can’t agree. Time is burning a hole in the RNC’s pocket. The Reps can’t afford the 6months to see if Steele gets his sea legs. If they do that puts it Oct to ‘do something’. The ’10 midterms are coming up. RNC needs to be fund raising like a mad man. NOT having another infighting session at a critical point in what could make this midterm the most critical one for this Republic in a generation.

technopeasant on March 5, 2009 at 11:05 PM

While I agree Palin is better at exciting people, I don’t think the 2012 election is going to resemble this one all that much. Obama won’t be floating in on a puffy cloud pulled down a rainbow road pulled by unicorns of unity and new politics. People are going to get slapped in the face by just what a streak of socialism can do to a country, and I think Romney will be better able to articulate demonstrably where and how Obama screwed up.

thecountofincognito on March 5, 2009 at 11:17 PM

I wish someone could go beyond saying that we should give him a chance or that he is a good guy to actually enumerate what are the skills and talents that recommend Steele for the job.

Gatsu on March 5, 2009 at 10:58 PM

No. Not at all.

We should not worry too much this early in the game. We’re just adjusting to the new playing field.

At least we say what’s on our mind, unlike the Dems that operate in world of “The Emporer Wears No Clothes”.

I’m proud to be conservative, and look fondly on all my fellow conservatives for always being ready for a fight.

We’re not eating our own, we’re making sure that what finally rises out of these ashes is tough and sharp as nails.

We want this process to breed a mean, lean leader that will tower above the Democrats house of cards.

1) he assembles crack staffs who do excellent work…oh wait no he fired everyone and is not hiring many

2) he raises OOBAH Bling Bling….oh wait on second thought there are fears SarahPac is drawing more money per donor

3) he always has his membership’s back in a fight….after all name an easier vector to shoot your membership in the back from

4) he reaches out by air dapping Al $lim $hady $harpton because you know he is REALLY likely to sway Big Al over to our side of the aisle…..

yup a roaring success

but Steele is gonna lead us to Big Winz based on his inability to win in a state that is 30% the race he panders to….

Blackwell fan here too, but I don’t know enough about him to judge.

And the NAZI incident showed me that Steele can’t hit hanging curveballs out of the park. That’s not a good sign…at all.

I might be leaning toward the get him out now crowd.

Not sure.

I’m emailing Dr. Fisher… She really stepped in it. They could’ve kept this inhouse but she must have really wanted to see her name in print.

Hell ideally I’d like Cheney or Rove….ain’t gonna happen we let them get way too scuffed up without hitting back….

Blackwell is a Cincy Republican…there are no RiNOs in SW Ohio from his era….he fights gun control tooth and nail and the main reason he is not Governor of Ohio is the UAW and the Taft taint….

I knew he was a problem when he started talking about using some hip hop strategy or some such nonsense. That is moronic pandering and he of all people should know that we aren’t going to appeal to blacks with that kind of crap. A better strategy would be to have strong policies on law and order in the inner cities and charter schools.

You speak as if the average voter bases their vote on who best defends the Constitution, which sadly but blatantly isn’t true after the last election. Someone needs to break it down for them, and they need knowledge and facts to back it up, because the media is still going to carry Obama’s water.
