Get ready to buy everyone’s home improvements

posted at 9:40 am on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

People opposed to the mortgage bailout have erupted in anger over the thought of having to subsidize their neighbors’ house payments when they’ve responsibly managed their own housing decisions.  Diana Olick tells her CNBC readers and viewers that that’s not all we’ll subsidize.  Thanks to a little-remarked portion of the bill, we’ll pay for their home-equity seconds as well.

Paragraph vi of the bill states:

While eligibly loan modifications will not require any participation by second lien holders, the program will include additional incentives to extinguish second liens on loans modified under the program in order to reduce the overall indebtedness of the borrower and improve loan performance. Servicers will be eligible to receive compensation when they contact second lien holders and extinguish valid junior liens. Servicers will be reimbursed for the release according to the specified schedule, and will also receive an extra $250 for obtaining a release of a valid second lien.

Olick erupts:

It’s not that I don’t get the reasoning. Sure, do all you can to help people pay their mortgage, like get rid of other debt. By why stop there? What about car loans? Student loans?? The second liens, in general, were used by borrowers to either buy more home than they could really afford or to use their homes as ATM machines. Yes, some people use home equity lines of credit to pay college tuition.

But I can’t tell you how many homeowners I’ve interviewed (and just take a look at David Faber’s documentary House of Cards to see more) who took out home equity lines to put in a pool or buy a fancy car or put an addition on the house that includes a fancy new kitchen with a Viking six-burner. And I’m supposed to pay for all that?

It’s one thing to suck up the bitter pill in order to save the greater housing market and keep families in their homes, but using taxpayer dollars to give homeowners a free ride on second liens is preposterous.

I know that I’ve been putting off some home improvements for some time to avoid taking out a second on my house.  I’ve spent cash in savings instead to do things that I couldn’t avoid, like replacing the plumbing in my house when it went bad and getting a new sliding back door when the double-pane seal failed on the old one (and those who live in cold-weather climes know what that would mean).  I replaced my roof with a combination of insurance and savings when a windstorm damaged it beyond repair.  I’d like to replace the 15-year-plus carpeting in my house, or perhaps replace my eight-year-old car at some point, but I haven’t wanted to assume that debt.

Now I get to assume the debts of everyone who did decide to do all of these things to their own homes by pulling out equity that they didn’t really have.  Maybe I can get a list of everyone who qualifies under Paragraph vi, so I can go to their house and enjoy their new carpets, their new barbecue grills, or their enclosed four-season decks.  After all, I’m paying for them — I should get the opportunity to enjoy them.

Who is your master, DTMH? What’s the matter? Can’t say his name out loud?

Who is my master? That would be me….wierd.

DeathToMediaHacks on March 5, 2009 at 12:08 PM

There’s change I can get behind. Ed, you’re a chump. I’ve been waiting 10 years to replace my carpet (the kids have killed it). That tile coming up in the master bathroom; soon to be Italian marble. Dream kitchen, now it’s a real kitchen (bye bye 20 year old cabinets, floor and stove). I’m going to Home Depot, bitches. Gimme my bail out money, I’m sick of waiting on my home repairs. Ooo, now I can replace that old POS Buick with a brand new Lexus. Savings, I don’t need no stinking savings. I’m applying for a second mortgage bailout.

Wait, if my husband and I work and only owe about 30% of our modest home’s value, we can get a bailout. Right???

;)

He’s Soros’ lapdog. If he were housebroken and better socialized, maybe he and your collie could have a playdate.

You do realize how insane it is of you to type the words “you’re arguing with a dog” as if you hadn’t written all the words your “collie” had said before right? This is your shtick.

DTMH, you don’t seem to know your audience here. Most of the stories and comments after said stories concerning Wall Street bailouts met with similar disappointment and anger around here. And don’t confuse my not wanting the ‘rich’ (not to be confused with the fabulously-well-to-do) to get overly taxed which could jeopardize my job when said ‘rich’ people stop patronizing my place of employment or lay off or fold up or move their business and fire employees that also patronize my place of employment. Or my new wife’s.

And since I got divorced in 2005 and sold my house soon after when I realized I couldn’t afford it and have been renting ever since, I have NO sympathy for people who got themselves into a mess with their mortgage. But propping up their mortgages keeps the prices of houses ARTIFICIALLY high. The bubble needs to burst. And then all those forclosed houses will be more affordable to all those responsible renters out there that have been looking for prices to come back down to where they belong. We can all swap places. Those jackholes who screwed up their mortgages can move into the vacated apartements and we’ll move into the more affordable houses. As it should be.

There it is, everyone. SELF — on the thrown (where God belongs). Thank you for correctly identifying your god.

My collie says:

Take a good long look, everyone. Lest you end up like DTMH — with nothing left in your life other than your empty hatred, envy, and pride. It’s NOT a pretty picture, is it? Who out there is inspired? Who wants to BE just like DTMH?

Self — the anti-thesis of Love.

P.S. It’s spelled weird, not wierd. For someone who purports to be an intellectual, you really SHOULD learn how to spell.

CyberCipher on March 5, 2009 at 12:17 PM

Dems and GOP are a hell of a lot closer to each other than they are to anything I believe in. There would be no bailouts under my administration. But you no doubt will say “why did you support Obama.” 1. First Dem I’ve voted for in a Presidential election, John Kerry could suck a nut. 2. Obama represents a shift towards the left in some aspects for the Dems. 3. I continue to hope that Obama’s election will cause more progressive members of the Democrats to win some local elections/state house seats/primaries for congress etc. And we can start going further and further left, but have to start somewhere.

DeathToMediaHacks on March 5, 2009 at 11:49 AM

I’m not affiliated with the GOP. The closest tie I have is my membership to the NRA. In my opinion, the GOP is way too close to the center to be productive. So your first sentence is worthless to a true conservative, blurring the lines between the GOP and the Donkeys have no effect on me.

And your other sentences, they just prove everything I’ve said about tying you to the dems.

Why should the rest of the country abandon the foundation of the country (capitalism and liberty) and run towards your ideology? Since you and your kind (oppressive totalitarian fake utopia scumbags) are an extremely small minority, and could never get the shift you’re asking for without a carefully crafted housing crisis resulting in complete destruction of the economy, and inviting the slow but sure removal of civil liberties guaranteed to the citizens of the country (AKA: trickery), why not just leave the country to go to a socialist country? Why are you trying to force your authoritarian beliefs on us?

Your kind are the lowest scum of the earth. You understand full and well that people would never knowingly give up their rights, so you have to trick the dumbest part of the population into voting away their rights. Gee, that’s so thoughtful of you. It’s obvious you’re “for the people”.

Furthermore, why shouldn’t you be executed for your role in the destruction of a free society? By statute, you’re an enemy of the United States.

He can’t tell you what you want to know. He doesn’t know himself. He’s possessed with the spirit of something evil, but he acquired it from the common culture around him everyday, drip by drip. He’s a product of something we have to battle, and there are many like him. At most he’s a foot soldier.

DeathToMediaHacks on March 5, 2009 at 12:08 PM

No it’s not. Under your proposed authoritarian socialist rule, your master would be the government. So at the current moment, you must understand that yes, you are your master, but since you voted for a socialist who will implement socialist rule, you have ultimately voted your own freedom away, as well as control of your own life.

You’ll do what the government tells you to, slave.

leetpriest on March 5, 2009 at 12:24 PM

I spend half a fortune in 2007 to make our old farm house livable in our now retirement years. That investment appears to be gone in the housing/mortgage crisis. Now with my retirement saving 40% lower, my home worth much less, our need to cut back our spending, our tax dollars are going to bailout those that overextended themselves on their 1st and now their 2nd mortgage.

I’m trying to refinance my very low interest rate 2nd and combine it with my low fixed first to get out of our HELOC with hyperinflation looming in the future; I may not be able to do so since my house value has tanked even with my investment in it. To kick dirt in my face, my county and state real estate taxes have leaped as has my insurance costs because of our improvements. And we have tax cheats in Obama’s cabinet.

I would like to punch a bunch of people in the nose so darn bad so they will finally see some consequences even if I have to smile all the way to jail. Think a jury of my angry peers would convict me?

rockmom and DTMH: “BTW, I agree with you about the whining rich people. It is a bit unseemly to cry about a tax rate going up from 35% to 39%. I don’t know why conservatives always paint themselves into a corner defending the affluent.”

I will try to make this as simple as possible: The tax code MAKES the economic classes in this country.

There are 4 basic ways to become wealthy in America(outside of John Edwards-type slimy litigation):

1. Be a movie star/athelete/inheritor and get all your money in huge chunks. This is not available to many people.
2. Start a business.
3. Invest over time, counting on your money working for YOU in the stock market.
4. Slowly build your income over time.

High upper tax rates hurt #2 and #4. When your income gets to a certain level you hit a 40% WALL which makes it hard to become wealthy.
High capital gains rates hurt #3. Those rates don’t affect people with $100 million invested as much as it hurts those with 500k invested.

So keep pushing for those “taxes on the rich”, you are erecting a roadblock for yourself.

I was talking to him a couple of days ago and he said he was struggling to pay for everything. I asked him if he was going to sell some of his toys and he looked at me like I was crazy. No you don’t. What he’s saying is that the spirit of socialism, your ideology, is evil. We’re not comparing apples and apples here, socialism is not an alternative to capitalism, it’s false utopianism and the brain-child of potential slave-drivers.

Ever see “I Robot”? If you watch it with an open mind, you’ll notice that the robots take over “in the interest of preserving human life”, thus stripping humans of their freedoms and imprisoning them in their own homes. This is the same as any socialist government. You’ll tell people “I’ve got a gun in your mouth telling you how you will think, act, speak and believe……it’s for your own good.”

Sorry guy, most people call that slavery.

File a Freedom of Information Act request and publish the names. Let the responsible taxpayers find out where there money has gone.
rockmom on March 5, 2009 at 10:33 AM

.
rockmom, Good luck with that…

.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by Bloomberg News, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors responded as reported today in Bloomberg.com today:

“…The Fed refused yesterday to disclose the names of the borrowers and the loans, alleging that it would cast “a stigma” on recipients of more than $1.9 trillion of emergency credit from U.S. taxpayers and the assets the central bank is accepting as collateral…”
.
The Freedom Of Information Act has lost its meaning- as has our country’s Constitution. The rules have changed, we no longer live in a functioning Constitutional Republic which is supposed to protect its citizens from the mob rule of a Democracy. For anyone who doesn’t know the difference, here’s the link to a great video from Wimp.com which explains it all.

Yes — it matches the astronomical housing costs and tax rates here. Everyone here that is part of the middle class has been losing ground for quite some time. It’s simple arithmetic — but I wouldn’t expect you to understand, because liberals like you are incapable of balancing their checkbooks.

Where do all these “losers” get their money from?

You’re supposed to end a question with a question mark, you nimnul. Answer: Boeing, Microsoft, shipyards teaming with trade from Asia, and the fishing and logging industry. ALL under attack by you socialists — Microsoft nearly driven out of the country by the Clinton administration, international trade collapsing because of the world economy, fishing and logging being driven out of existence by environmentalists, Boeing being driven out of state by high labor costs and the inability to compete with Airbus.
The last person to leave Seattle, please turn off the lights.

I can see though how you’d be upset being in a diverse, multicultural place like Seattle.

Try again, you buffoon. I’m white. My wife is Pacific Islander. That’s right. We’re a mixed race couple with different cultural backgrounds and different native tongues. We’re due for our first child next month — which is more than society will EVER get out of the likes of you and your “partners”.

Fail Prof. You tried to use the gay imagery as a weapon so that you could respond this way.

Take away your sexual attraction and your skin color and the Professor just disappears. You’re just a gust of wind. You know this. I just don’t happen to think it’s your fault–although there too we’re bound to disagree.

JiangxiDad on March 5, 2009 at 1:11 PM

First we kill off a bunch of the unborn; now we raise the taxes of the survivors sky-high.

Rockmom, if you’re still around, I’d advise you to take the money. You care about your kids’ education, which means they’ll probably be productive citizens, which means if our country somehow survives the next few years, they’ll be the ones stuck footing the bill for this mess. Why shouldn’t they get the benefit?

I still can’t believe there’s not SOME mechanism to recover some of the money — a lien on the house whenever it sells or is inherited, or a split on equity increase, or SOMETHING. And when you reflect that a handful of Dem states (CA, NV, FL, MI, — there’s one more, my memory fails me — was it newly-Dem VA?) will get the principal benefit, is this anything more than the ‘Democrat Vote Purchase Act of 2009′?

What happened to my country?

DeathToMediaHacks on March 5, 2009 at 12:56 PM

Buck up to an increase in already too high taxes?!
Low Capital gains saves my ranch from going under. Govt intervention has reduced my competitiveness. To compete I now must be big ag. I must be a monopoly.
Keeping CG taxes low HELPS me stay in business.

DeathToMediaHacks on March 5, 2009 at 12:55 PM

Seattle-I lived in the Puget Sound area from the late ’80s off & on through the late ’90s.
I watched it change from a nice pastoral small-town atmosphere to a multi-cultural cesspool.
Renton WAS a nice place to live.
Bellevue WAS nice til prices skyrocketed so high I had to move to Monroe. Things got crazy there & I had to go to Fall City then Snoqualmie. I lived in Bothell near downtown on the slough & finally had to leave the state bcs I cold no longer afford to live ANYWHERE out there.
I loved Puget Sound til the nut cases from CA etc came in & RUINED it.
Everything got overpriced & overvalued.
You have a high income out there just about no matter where you work-but it costs all of it to live there.
In 1996-98 a dumpy house along the slough in Bothell with NO insulation (only heat came from a wood stove) 4 roommates & we were paying $900/month. No utilities included.
That was a GREAT deal then. I shudder to think how much it costs now.
Your multi-cultural heaven that is Seattle has never existed. The gay district, which I have been to on Queen Anne’s hill is a festering puss-bucket of filth & sexual perversity, right in the streets.
Even in Everett it was bad.
Seattle & the greater area is not a place I ever want to live in again-unless all the morons who screwed it up leave.

Holy cow, I’m convinced. CNBC has given out bad investment advice in the past; so I should pay the mortgages of everyone who was too irresponsible to functionally handle their own budgets.

Why would I want to help the lady who got a 80,000 house, ran up mortgages to 300,000 and then blew all the cash leaving her unable to pay? Because CNBC gives bad investment advice?

And why would I listen to anything you say in the future? Because giraffes can’t swim very well.

Color me convinced. Now, given the new information; I’m going to go adopt some termites and paint their legs purple; to help the economy.

Actually, I’m off to the world of the rational, where cause and effect are related, and arguments aren’t random and bizarre. Sorry DMTH, I’m sure having someone talk at your level was fun while it lasted.

And a recession that is only getting worse every time the socially popular President opens his mouth, and H.R. 45 in the house to allow the feds to more easily find all of the legal gun owners, and completely out of control federal spending, and a president with an “Enemies list”, and a president with aspirations to create a “civilian security force”, and an executive and legislative branch that want to stifle dissent by restricting opposing viewpoints through a law that targets only their enemies….etc…etc.

The list goes on and on. For someone that enjoys not being the government’s bitch, those are unacceptable acts. I wish I didn’t have to spell it out for you, I’m not sure whether you’re just a dumbass that didn’t know what I was referring to, or a dumbass that can’t argue against it.

CHECK THIS OUT:

Not to disagree with you, and I know there are plenty of “grasshoppers” out there who did not save. I had an emergency fund. It’s almost gone. I’ve been out of work for 8 months. I know lots of people who have been out of work much longer. The recession in construction and financial services started in 2007. There have been over 500,000 jobs lost in financial services, and almost all of those people have mortgages, and those jobs are not coming back. We’re not going to be digging the ditches and installing the solar panels paid for by the Porkulus. The construction workers who built our houses need those jobs.

I have already doubled (last month) the amount that I am putting in my 401K and I am now considering the possibility of tripling my contribution to that account. Next month, when my son is born, I will open up a 529 account for his college education. I will dump the maximum amount of money possible into that account as well. All of this dough is pre-tax (tax deferred) income. I may have to live an exceptionally austere/Spartan life style, and I may even lose everything in those tax deferred accounts (at the rate that O-bambam is destroying wealth). NO MATTER. I’d rather lose all of it than give ANY tax revenue to that baby killing slave trader in chief that occupies the oval office.
