Chavez seizes American food plant

posted at 8:55 am on March 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez has channeled his inner Fidel once again.  Chavez seized a food processing unit owned by Cargill, one of the US’s largest privately-held companies.  Chavez claims that Cargill won’t produce food at a low enough price:

President Hugo Chavez seized a local unit of American food giant Cargill on Wednesday and threatened to nationalize Venezuela’s largest private company, Polar, as he demanded industry produce cheaper rice.

The clash with the food companies came less than three weeks after Chavez, a Cuba ally who has nationalized swaths of the Venezuelan economy, won a referendum on allowing him to run for reelection. …

U.S. company Cargill, which operates one rice mill in Venezuela, said earlier in the week it was expecting a visit from officials even though it does not produce the type of rice that is at the center of the dispute.

Chavez said he ordered the takeover because Cargill — the largest privately owned U.S. company — does not produce basic rice that is subject to government price controls.

“Prepare the decree, we are going to expropriate Cargill. We are not going to tolerate this,” Chavez said.

Basically, Chavez wants to do for food what he’s done for energy.  Since driving out foreign owners, Chavez has lost significant production in Venezuelan oilfields.  Electrical production has deteriorated, and ironically hurts the poorer people most by damaging appliances they can’t afford to replace.  The loss of expertise in energy created by Chavez’ nationalizations has the oil-rich country diving into Third World status on electrical power.

Nationalizing the food industry will eventually have the same effect.  Cargill operates as a business, not a patronage system and a bureaucracy, which means their employees have to produce to meet the profit incentive.  Once Chavez seizes it, he will staff it with political cronies and paper-pushers who have no idea how to produce food efficiently.  Costs will go up, but Chavez will hide them from the masses by selling the product at a loss.  It’s the Robert Mugabe playbook, only with 10% less violence … for now.

The big question is why Cargill stuck around for this long.  Perhaps they have already written off their Venezuelan investments and just decided to stick around as long as possible.  This should signal the rest of the foreign investors in Venezuela to pack their bags and look for greener pastures.

I do believe he waited until Obama took office. Whenever a totalitarian state takes private property the US usually responds with severe punishments like tariffs, an embargo, or threat of military force. This article describes that during the 1920′s Mexico was trying to find money and decided to seize the US oil industry. Coolidge told Mexico that if they took US oil interests without any compensation he would ally himself with the rebellion that was going on there. Guess what, Mexico capitulated and revised its policies so any new oil lease would be subject to the law but not existing contracts. Fast forward about 20 years and the same thing started to happen. This time FDR was in power and declared the “Good Neighbor Policy”. This policy stated that the US would no longer try and interfere in internal politics. He didn’t lift a finger when Mexico confiscated the entire oil industry. Ask yourself this. Does Obama think he is Coolidge or FDR? With that answer in mind do you think he will help at all or just call it an “internal matter”?

Having been in the food production business for decades…good luck on running a plant.
The workers “think” they know how to run a plant…but talk about details, running a piece of machinery, or loading a truck is no big deal…but the day to day operations of a food plant is paying attention to the fine details, I give it 6 weeks to failure, 3 months to total failure…meanwhile, poor quality, probably no botulism or anything like that from a rice plant; unless they are canning.
Maintenance will go first, then production will fall behind, then quality issues will start to come back from the weeks of poor management, excessive labor will be added to make up for poor management, costs will go up, quality down, and efficiency will be lost.
Chavez will blame Cargill for sabotage…

Chavez continues to generously provide his people the starvation and suffering of Socialism.

This past hour on Laura Ingraham, she was speaking to a self described optimistic conservative economist who mentioned the importance of American industries REINVESTING THEIR INTEREST EXPENSES WITHIN AMERICA.

Given that investments abroad are totally lost becoming coerced contributions to Socialism, any industry or investor with common sense would limit future investments to America, the place called home. Obama has yet to pull off his perpetual heist ritual to absolutely destroy capital free trade. If Ayn Rand’s objectivism relates to fiscal conservatism, the objectivist “happiness” quotient would be sterile without tolerance for social conservatism, as appreciation is too much to expect.

Who wants the color spectrum to be limited to one’s favorite color? Given, not all variables or contrasts are aesthetically desirable in one setting, but there are those that absolutely are.

The challenge conservatives face is in recognizing what concepts complement and strengthen each other, and weeding out the distractions that horde required nutrients.

Identify and evaluate content. Negate destructive forces from without that have found their way within.

That socialism attacks both fiscal and social conservatism is notable. Socialism, not social conservatism, is an immune deficiency disorder.
