Uh oh: Matthews sounding fed up with Obama’s earmark hypocrisy

Buckley turning on him was predictable, Brooks turning on him was a pleasant surprise if not unthinkable — but Mr. Leg Thrill? This isn’t the first time he’s expressed exasperation with The One’s performance lately, either. If he’s losing Matthews, whither the rest of the media’s Hopenchange sycophants?
As Ace notes, Obama’s not indifferent to all extravagant spending. Just the kind that might improve America’s defense.

On the one hand, it’s rather sad to see a tv show host watch the candidate he worshiped and adored (and cast aside any journalistic integrity he may have had for) for almost two years crumble before his very eyes. It’s like a kid being told there is no Santa. But then I remembered this is Chris Tingle and I got over it.
scalleywag on March 4, 2009 at 9:33 PM
He’s still an enemy collaborator. Regardless of what he says now he is a propagandist and his job is “to make sure that this administration succeeds.” Those are his words and I will keep them in mind everytime he says anything.
thomasaur on March 4, 2009 at 9:34 PM
That was refreshing. Kind of surreal.
Imagine if the entire media just woke up one day and started acting like real journalists. Talk about Hope and Change,,, well,, that would be it.

Are most conservatives already at Unambigusousville? I’m looking for a City on a Shining Hill.

I like around 2:20 on the video where the apologist says that Obama’s got a lot of things on his plate like economy, the Dow….
What about Rush Limbaugh?
LevStrauss on March 4, 2009 at 9:36 PM
That would be ‘Shining City on a Hill’.
thomasaur on March 4, 2009 at 9:38 PM
I knew I got that backwards. Doh!
terryannonline on March 4, 2009 at 9:39 PM
Good grief, I almost forgot about that. That was pretty pathetic. Imagine Walter Cronkite saying something like that, he would have been ushered off the set.

Well I can understand Obama’s reluctance. That has got to bring negative flashbacks.
MB4 on March 4, 2009 at 9:40 PM
Matthews is a hack who sold his objectivity and moral compass long ago, but then that is obvious by watching his show. As to his remarks today:
“even a blind squirrel finds the occasional acorn”.
mad scientist on March 4, 2009 at 9:41 PM
Hell, even DAN RATHER wouldn’t have said that, I don’t think. At least, back when he was an anchorman he wouldn’t have.
scalleywag on March 4, 2009 at 9:41 PM
I remember Matthews from the OJ days. I never missed his show. I haven’t watched him on MSNBC because he’s a nut now. Irrelevant.
suzyk on March 4, 2009 at 9:42 PM
Isn’t is also kind of creepy that he says that as if Obama were sitting there, tuned in to his every word? It would be hilarious if he didn’t even know who Matthews was.
scalleywag on March 4, 2009 at 9:43 PM
I can only speak for myself. I am sure of my beliefs and the foundations thereof. I am open to challenges and willing to listen to opposing positions and give them due consideration. I suspect most of my brethren feel the same.
There’s a lot of room in the Republican Party for all sorts of pick-and-choose appetizer menu kind of folks.

Shallow stupid suckers.

I agree with the posters who’ve speculated that Chrissy is probably losing his retirement cash just like the rest of us. Even the biggest Obama-drones can recognize that Obama’s laughing at our financial ruin- why shouldn’t he? His paycheck is guaranteed by the gub’mint.

With earmarks, sure there would have been some differences. On everything else, not really. McCain’s answer to everything was always govt help. Maybe the stimulus would have been $700B instead of $800B. But that’s about it.

Chrissy is only riding the boogie-board of state-sponsored stupidity.
That’s all.

hillbillyjim on March 4, 2009 at 9:59 PM
Obama will not go line by line in this bill because he wants to minimize the opposition on ‘larger’ issues like nationalized healthcare: “I gave you your pet project, now support me on this unpopular-socialist-national-healthcare bill.”
It’s the Chicago way.
LEBA on March 4, 2009 at 9:59 PM
“The president is going to draw some very clear lines about what’s going to happen going forward,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. “The rules of the road going forward for those many appropriations bills that will go through Congress and come to his desk will be done differently.”
Do you think Obama and Rahmy told Gibbs to make this statement in anticipation that the media, (and Chrissy) would buy into the “this was last years business” so it’s o.k. to let the pork slide? Who does Obama think wrote this bill? (hint: it wasn’t a Republican controlled House)

Listening to Cilizza and his New York Mag pal try to soft peddle the collapse of their messiah makes my hair hurt.
Obama is the same as any other politician. He said what he needed to to win the election and all his promises come with an expiration date.
Also, Cilizza must have missed Obama’s comparison of the Dow with a tracking poll. Obama doesn’t give a rat’s @$$ about the 70% of Americans who are losing their shirts in the market.

I don’t think Matthews realizes Obama is a liar and a hypocrite.
YoungAmerican on March 4, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Maybe Cwissy is making good on his pledge to “help Barack succeed.” He wants Obama to succeed by doing what is right. He’s helping him in his mind by giving him good advice. He sdaid it several times – that Obama would be a hero if he cut the pork.
Mr_Magoo on March 4, 2009 at 10:22 PM
Terry,
If you’re looking for a “City on a Shining Hill”, or a Shining City on a Hill, or something in between, you’re in the right neighborhood. There are plenty of reasons for you to be here, but I’m afraid I’m not one of them.
During the run-up to the election last Nov., it seems that you couldn’t be bothered to take a stand against unlimited immigration or even against O-friggin-bama.
But I don’t do “in between”.
But that’s just me.

Am I watching invasion of the body snatchers?
For a few minutes there Chris Matthews was starting to look like a jounalist and not a freshmen cheerleader at Obama High. Of course he had two guest to tow the party line for him. Those guests sounded like morons and made really pathetic arguments, but it is NBC so someone has to do it. John and Chris C., just seemed to be very resistant to the idea of changing the corruption in Washington.
On a side note I am glad to see that McCain is actually doing his job and listening to his constituents this time. Maybe he can do it again sometime soon. Based on just this one instance it could be that he listened to his people because they happened to be supporting his pet issue. If it happens a few more times I might really start to believe that he is honestly listening to America.

When will people learn?

As much as I’d enjoy an on air Bad Lieutenant moment for Chris, it simply isn’t in the cards.
moxie_neanderthal on March 4, 2009 at 10:31 PM
Tim:
One instant? McCain has always been against earmarks. He has never asked for an earmark in his entire career. There are very few Congressional reps of either party that can say that. So does that make fiscal conservatism a pet issue? That seems like a strange sort of criticism/compliment.
Terrye on March 4, 2009 at 10:33 PM
Chris hasn’t changed one bit .. he’s simply trying to look as if he’s objective. I think the thrill is as strong as as ever … shake your leg Chrissy.

I love the worthless trash…
“He’s prioritizing”, “He’s focusing on the economy”.
Funny, last time I checked it took less time to NOT sign something that it did TO sign something. So how hard would it be for him not to sign the bill and take six seconds from his Wed. night party and say, “Congress, drop the pork and I will sign it.” The way these clowns talk about it, you’d think that the President had to physically go through bills, line by line, with a bottle of White Out.
That aside, isn’t this the same Messiah who claimed that he was a master of multitasking and could both campaign, debate and fix the economy at the same time?
Damiano on March 4, 2009 at 10:51 PM
Terrye on March 4, 2009 at 10:33 PM
Not one instance of being against earmarks but this is an isntance where he is clearly listening to the people back home, and acting accordingly. However, as long as this is just about earmarks he may be agreeing with the people simply because that was his possition to begin with.
I recognize that McCain is doing a good thing here, however I need evidence beyond the issue of earmarks in order to convince me that he is really listening to and representing the people of AZ. One thing I have never dissagreed with McCain on is earmark reform, but will he continue to be this responsive to his constituents on other issues? Sorry I have become a little jaded about these things. I will admit I my first reaction to hearing McCain was to get excited and ‘think this is the kind of senator I’ve been looking for’. Then almost immediatly the skepticism set in. Hopefully McCain will help cure me of it.
Tim Pancoast on March 4, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Well, I reckon the love affair is over with Matthews. Obama has so many other Newsies still fooled so it does not matter.
I never wasted any time watching Matthews anyway.
The Obama Cult worship is going to start fading like water colors in the rain when the new taxes get in place anyway.

Keep talking like that you guys. Next winter, when the cap and trade tax has pushed ALL energy back through the roof, and the unemployment rate is over 10% nationally, and people are really struggling to keep gas in the car, let alone keep the heating bill paid, I want these little effete pr*cks to go out into the shopping mall where sitting on Santa’s knee will be about all a lot of people will be able to afford and remind everyone that they said this [small potatoes] about that [wasteful pork in legislation]. I hope they’ve got a whole gang Mike Tyson’s for bodyguards because they’ll need’em. If McCain’s constituents are that mad now, just wait til then.
All these A-holes think that Obama’s policies are going to work. Obama is counting on it, but he’s like the guy who goes to the track today to try to win the money he owes to Guido tomorrow. When tomorrow comes, Guido isn’t only going to break his thumbs, he’s going to break his legs, too. Now try go out and earn the money, genius. You can’t now, can you, with two broken legs? When Obama has finally broken this economy he won’t be able to turn around. Having bled white the only people who could have helped him, where is he going to turn? What’ll it be–more taxes? More spending? Having betrayed all of the promises he made to the middle class, he won’t get any help from them either. The only people who will still believe in him will be the same people who believe that OJ is innocent, and for the same reasons.

Matthew’s guests are morons. There is no case to be made to just get it off his desk and move on to more pressing matters. Did you see the both of them shake their heads no when Chris Matthew’s said it will help the ecomony? Are they idiots, the govt spending is causing part of the markets collapse. Like these two morons, obama does not seem to notice or care that these huge spending bills are causing unrest in the market, or more importantly to us.

Immelt thinks it is a good idea that the Govt and GE work hand in hand for Green Technology. GE’s stock is in the dumper they need a Government bailout looks like they found a back door. So Corporate America not the Poor is benefiting by the Democrats in office that is for anyone who has bought the redistribution is for the less fortunate….Why would GE get the money back for Climate control? How about a link to that…seeing as no Republican saw this bill before it was distributed for vote.
What you are referring to, and I am sure you got this off a “MediaMatters” type website is that 40% of the money may go to areas that are Republican (or states that are repbulican govs. like California)…that is, the dems want to win those seats.
Now show me where any Republican had a say of what was going in this bill…
