The obligatory “Rush challenges Obama to a debate” post

posted at 5:15 pm on March 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

The transcript of this afternoon’s stemwinder is up at his site. Will Gibbs take the bait tomorrow, “counterproductive” though it may be? I’m guessing no, but hope for easy content springs eternal.

A choice passage:

But make no mistake about it. Emanuel is the leader of all of this. Carville and Begala are just trying to ride my fame into their fortune and become relevant again. Begala and Carville, don’t confuse them with the power brokers that are managing this. It all Emanuel. Begala and Carville are second-rate talking heads on CNN. CNN has no audience. Rahm Emanuel is the power behind the throne — and don’t let his effeminate nature and his ballerina past mislead you on this. He may look effeminate (he was a ballerina at one time) but he has the feral instincts of a female rat defending its young. Well, take a look. When Emanuel and Carville and Begala are together (and I’ve seen pictures) it looks like a reunion of the Village People. (singing) Y! M! C! A!

And the big finish:

Rahm Emanuel is leading the team going after a private citizen, and the Drive-By Media applaud, get on board and help further the mission. We live in different times. So if you can wipe me out — and, by the way, Mr. President, and Mr. Emanuel: Don’t make the mistake of assuming I’m wiping myself out here in the process. I want to thank you guys for elevating me beyond the stature I already earned and achieved, because now more and more Americans have the opportunity to learn who you really are, what your ideas will really accomplish, and what damage and harm I think your policies will bring for a very, very long time to them and to this country. So I want to thank you for the opportunity. Obviously, it’s a threat targeting me. I’ve extended the invitation. I’m looking forward to hearing back from whoever in your cabal one way or the other on accepting my offer.

RCP has audio if you’d rather listen. Exit question: I’ve been arguing about this all day with commenters and still haven’t gotten a good answer. Why the fixation on Rush as a “private citizen”? The idea, I take it, is that Obama’s bringing the enormous power of the presidency to bear on a poor, defenseless Joe Public, but Limbaugh’s anything but defenseless (as today’s debate challenge proves) and considerably more powerful, I think we’d all agree, than the average congressman who would be considered fair game as a public official. If the White House had picked him out of a phone book or was rooting around in his trash, that’d be an egregious breach of privacy, but he’s one of the most powerful people in American media, with a following in the millions, and they haven’t done anything untoward (yet?). In fact, strictly speaking, they’re not “going after” him at all. They’re going after the GOP, to tar them by association with Rush and they’re willing to inflate his influence to do so. It’s Republicans who are suffering from having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric. What harm has Rush suffered? His stature’s never been greater, as he himself acknowledges right here.

MaverickMuse, go easy on the mixed metaphors. Simple declarative sentences work better.

OhioCoastie on March 4, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Right. But not just any private citizen. He hammers Obama every day for hours for millions of listeners, and then the White House turns around and says something as meager as “He’s the head of the Republican Party,” and suddenly a terrible line has been crossed?

Bush got hammered for 8 years straight by any number of private citizens. I don’t remember him or anybody else in his administration trying to depict any one of them as something they weren’t.

And just because Limbaugh can defend himself against an attack doesn’t mean it’s not an attack.

Jim Treacher on March 4, 2009 at 6:38 PM

Rahm Emanuel is the power behind the throne — and don’t let his effeminate nature and his ballerina past mislead you on this. He may look effeminate (he was a ballerina at one time) but he has the feral instincts of a female rat defending its young.

We will do a side by side match then. Rush can take care of the Louse from the White House and I will take care of the Little Rat. I should be able to finish my part in plenty of time to see Rush’s part of the show.

It’s Republicans who are suffering from having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric.

You are indeed correct AP. The Republicans are suffering because they are trying to “thread the needle” which is simply another way of saying “ride the fence.”

The GOP won’t have to worry about riding the fence if they get down off of it and choose a side. They can either defend Obama and attack Rush (a stupid idea if they want to remain a party instead of being eaten by the Dems) or they can defend Rush and take the fight to Obama. When they lead the fight Rush becomes a follower and the voice. Obama will be forced to fight the GOP and Rush will be forgotten once more.

I say keep it up Rush. Push hard! The GOP will either grow a spine or die. Either way, it’s better for the conservative movement than going with whatever populist tide is in.

Pattosensei on March 4, 2009 at 6:48 PM

This is a simple underestimation of Rush’s audience….another immature and premature move by obama’s team of “experts”. I had never listened to him b/c of my job and hours, but now have the opportunity and tune in every day and find Rush to be very forthright and truthful. But that’s just it; libs hate truth – they want to lay blame & receive praise. Brain disease.

Many of the replies to Allah’s question have nailed the point.

I will add this: is it any wonder that a president who spends his time picking fights with a Santelli or a Limbaugh has gotten his ass handed to him in every single diplomatic effort since taking office? Putin et al. must be rolling over laughing at such a pathetic spectacle.

One other problem is that the singling out of critics makes it seem like there are only a handful of them out there. I mean, it’s not like Santelli or Limbaugh or Joe the Plumber have conveyed anything that millions of Americans just like them have not expressed. Will Secretary Gibbs have an opportunity to spit on my concerns, as well?

cackcon on March 4, 2009 at 6:54 PM

It’s Republicans who are suffering from having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric.

why should they reject that? If Obama fails that does not mean the country fails in fact quite the opposite. Understanding the meaning of the “I want him to fail” is the key here. Obama failing means his policies do not obtain what he claims they will obtain. Obviously we all know that his policies are going to fail miserably in the regards in which he has pitched them.
But to agree with Rush Limbaugh’s statement is only acknowledging what we all already know. We all want Obama to fail because by him failing American is spared the horrible fate of socialist nanny government controlling your lives.
There is no need to be ashamed of this we should not put on the facade of the democrats and say that “we support the troops but not the war.” It was a fallacy then as it is now. We don’t support Obama or his liberal policies because they are the same and they both are wrong for America. They will destroy this country and its foundation to attempt to drive the socialist stake through our heart as in Europe.
I don’t wish to be a Zombie nation taking orders from Big Brother so I want Obama to fail. And Fail he must.

Why is the government, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, attacking a private citizen because of something that was said that the Administration just simply doesn’t like? Opens a path I don’t think liberals really want to try and justify in the event they lose power.

If I were to construct a President I would furnish him with some way and qualities and characteristics which the present one lacks. He would not stoop to ask for any man’s compliments, praises, flatteries; and he would be far above exacting them. I would have him as self-respecting as the better sort of man in these regards.

He would not be a merchant, a trader. He would not buy these things. He would not sell, or offer to sell, material benefits for the product called adulation. I would have him as dignified as the better sort of man in this regard.

He would value no respect but the respect born of his doing well by the Nation; not that born of payoffs contracted for. No fawning adulation would be required or desired or expected of another man.

In his White House there would be no enemies list.

He would not be a jealous President — a trait so small that even ordinary men despise it in each other.

He would not boast.

He would keep private his admirations of himself; He would regard self-praise as unbecoming the dignity of his position.

He would not have the spirit of vengeance in his heart. Then it would not issue from his lips.

He would spend some of the remainder of his presidency in trying to forgive himself for making the country worse off when he could have made the country better off with the same effort and he would spend the rest of his life after his presidency living with his half brother and working as a Peace Corp volunteer in Kenya.

There is not a reason in this world that Republicans need to reject Rush’s “I want him to fail” rhetoric. If asked they should just say “There is no need to hope Obama’s plans fail, they have already failed, they are nothing but a big failure”. “The stock market has lost 18% since Obama announced his big government spending plans, the unemployment rate is higher now than at any time in the last 10 years”. “You cannot spend yourself into wealth and success. The government doesn’t create wealth and can not bring about economic recovery with tax and spend policies”. There really is nothing more to say about it.

I’ve been arguing about this all day with commenters and still haven’t gotten a good answer.

Methinks thou doest protest too much. ;-)

First, Oslime-a has the power to change the lives of millions without their approval. Rush can only change the lives of those who CHOOSE to change.

Point two: A congressman is elected by the people to represent their wishes. In that sense, Oslime-a has the same mandate. Ergo equal in responsibility to the public. Oslime-a doesn’t get to CHOOSE which US citizens he represents. He is bound by the constitution to represent ALL Americans. Americans do not want or expect a president to single one out a private citizen for attacks. Attacks carried around the F**KING world by a willing media. Oslime-a is a classless sack of human shit.

Finally, even when these Marxists are caught in the act of attacking a private citizen, conservatives just wave it off. What kind of scum attacks a private citizen? A Marxist scum, that’s who. And if they are allowed to attack Rush unchallenged, who is next? You Allah?

Conservatives would do themselves a favor to remember that the thief doesn’t steal your whole bologna off the table. He just borrows a thin slice over time. Pretty soon, your bologna is gone.

csdeven on March 4, 2009 at 8:46 PM

What really bothers me is not Rush, who certainly can take care of himself, and will probably make them regret starting the whole thing before it’s done.

I’m more concerned about former Bush administration officials who are about to be targeted by a Truth Commission now that they are no longer part of the president’s administration, and can’t be protected.

Obama is already crowding out the competition for Worst President Ever. Just wait. It’s going to get worse.

tom on March 4, 2009 at 8:49 PM

Exit question: …What harm has Rush suffered? His stature’s never been greater, as he himself acknowledges right here.

Being singled out publicly would be cause enough for concern; the so-called “Fairness” Doctrine is a very great additional one. The circumstance of the impending return of left-liberal interference in the choices of radio programming managers suggests his being singled out by a Presidential administration is preparatory to that. I don’t understand why you would expect Limbaugh to wait for the likes of Obama and Emanuel to succeed in actually harming him or his effectiveness.

You seem to be thinking as a mere lawyer, rather than thinking strategically, but I resist thinking you’re that obtuse. And the suspicion also comes to me that you’re starting arguments to generate clicks and page-views, but I resist thinking you’re so petty and have no better means.

It’s Republicans who are suffering from having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric.

That’s not a problem. It’s an opportunity. An opportunity to call out the questioner for trying to say that the president IS the country. The president is an elected official, not an absolute monarch like the French king who said, “L’etat, cest moi.” Obama can fail while the country succeeds, and vice versa. If Obama’s policies are bad enough, then the country can only succeed if Obama’s policies fail.

But most of all, it’s an opportunity to talk about which policies of the president are harmful.

This is such a dumb situation for the Republicans to be in.

Why not just have Bobby Jindal say it is wrong for Rush to hope the President fails?

Make sure he doesn’t apologize and then he will be seen as the head of the Republican Party.

Easy.

ckoeber on March 4, 2009 at 5:39 PM

First, of all that’s not what Rush said, as has been pointed out numerous times.

Second, Larry King already tried to pin Jindal down and Jindal neatly sidestepped him. There was a thread on it earlier this week:

KING: Do you want him to fail?

JINDAL: I want the — I don’t want those policies to be adopted. I want my country to succeed, but I don’t want policies to be adopted that I think –

KING: But what if the… policies actually work? What if they work?

JINDAL: This is where we have a fundamental disagreement. I don’t think it’s going work to borrow half a — to spend in excess of our revenues…

KING: So you hope — you hope it doesn’t hurt?

JINDAL: No. I hope that failed policies don’t get adopted. I want my country to succeed. I want the economy to grow. I want — certainly I want the economy to grow again so people can afford their homes. But I don’t want the Congress to adopt policies that would make the problem worse, not better. … I think it’s our — I think it’s our obligation as Americans when we don’t agree with a policy to speak up against it and to certainly offer different solutions.

INC on March 4, 2009 at 9:08 PM

As Ed commented on the King-Jindal exchange:

First, no one is saying that they hope the country fails. King equates country with Barack Obama in a weird way that suggests King has bought into the cult of personality, as though Obama has become King’s personal messiah. We don’t want Obama’s policies to get adopted because we think they’re going to be disastrous, and so far, Wall Street agrees, since it’s lost 18% since Obama took office and shows no sign of recovery. People have lost their retirement incomes and stored wealth in this crash, and Obama wants to take even more of it for his so-called stimulus plans.

Jindal explains this very clearly and concisely, and also manages not to throw anyone on the Right under a bus while doing so…

This evening Comrade O’bama is dining on a fine meal of roast duck, arugula, and 600 a bottle chardonnay….

his approval is at 165% and the proles are thrilled with their soy rations….

CBS News, goodnight….

Except this is not true. And that Rush thinks God envies him is a factually accurate statement.

McCain has been doing what needs to be done, which is to highlight and ridicule pork. As HotAir has reported, even Matthews is onboard. Why doesn’t this stupid fat pig shut up and let Senators do their job? Who needs this circus?

I listened to his speech for a minute or so. He said, we are conservatives, we don’t divide people into groups. I immediately remembered “the Heartland” and “the real America” and turned it off. Stupid, fat propagandist on drugs who lies. I know he’s got adoring fans. So does Jenna Jameson.

Wow. Where were you during the Shamesty debates in the summer of 2007? I distinctly remember Bush and others claiming the opposers of the bill to be ‘bigots and racists’.

True, Bush was not calling a specific individual those names

Which, being the point, means that maybe your “Wow” is misplaced.

I don’t remember Bush saying that, but otherwise it sounds like you know what you’re talking about.

- Tonight’s news. Obama’s proposing a new plan. Rush (close up) is against it. Again. Also, he said he deserved his personal jet, while the President should be ashamed of using Air Force One. We report. You decide.

This statement is proof that liberals are psychologically damaged. They are only capable of gobbling up the little balls of shit that roll out of Oslime-a’s mouth.

csdeven on March 4, 2009 at 11:11 PM

Rush said that the one weakness in Alinsky is what to do when you won. Alinsky tells you how to get there but not what to do when you’re there. Hence, all team Obama knows is Alinsky tactics.

Rush also performed the most beautiful judo move ever in politics. He challenged them to do something they will never agree to using their Fairness arguments. He can heap scorn on them forever, calling them cowards every day in creative ways.

When all this crap the Marxists are doing falls apart, we will hear the loudest I-told-you-so in history. Thanks to team Obama many, many more people will hear the told-part of the I-told-you-so.

After a 17 year hiatus from being a Limbaugh listener, I think I’m going to become one of Limbaugh’s fans. This is great stuff. I wish we had some elected leaders that were were willing to confront “The 0ne” like this.

Rush, Levin and our gracious hostess Michelle seem to be about the only people with a national audience that have the ‘malkins’ to take the fight to the enemy and really get in his face. For that, they have my admiration and appreciation

I just love how lefties admit to never listening to Rush and them proceed to tell us what is wrong with him. They are just happy as a dog with two peters to admit their ignorance before giving their opinion on a subject. It’s clear they hate him because they are told to by the media. It’s utter partisan hackery.

It’s kinda like hearing someone say “I’ve never seen and episode of Star Trek but here is why it’s a terrible show…” Thanks for making your opinion irrelevant.

Assuming Rush would say something like that about Obama flying Air Force One, he would be justified in that he never blamed climate change on man made CO2, and would be paying for his jet out of his own money.

neuquenguy on March 5, 2009 at 8:49 AM

Rush is, as usual, DEAD ON CORRECT! He has called out The Messiah, he has called to bullies bluff… The White House has watermellon all over it’s face… The One singled out a private citizen, told folks to ignore him… The private citizen answered with FACTS, proof of the danger of Socilist, the far left radical cloak was removed and The King was found to be wearing no clothes. A tyrinical ego driven Leader, a radical, a man destine to be a disaster for freedoms, The Constitution and our personal rights. Rush pinned him to the mat by his huge ears and beat him with the “might of right”. Now it’s time for us real Conservatives to stand with Rush. It’s time to RUMBLE!

Let’s have the RNC Chair say the following and have it echo’d over and over and over and over by every single talking head that Conservatives have… Pound the following into the American peoples minds, have them saying it to their friends… Pound it, pound it and pound it again:

Do we want Obama’s cap and trade that will cost the average homeowner and business MILLIONS in higher energy costs, electric bills, gas bills, and gasoline prices to suceed?

NO! Conservatives want it to FAIL! We want to protect the American people from huge burdens to the family budget.

Do we want to stand in lines, have third world Health Care provided by The Messiah and his thugs, rationed care for our elderly, loss of choice of our own personal Doctors as is proposed… Do we want this Socilist Health Care to suceed?

No! Conservatives want it to FAIL! We want the American people to have freedom of choice of Doctors, personal responsibility for our health choices and affordable coverage that people control, not big Government.

**** Do you guys see how affective this can be? Take every single point that The One is currently proposing and ramming down our throats… Go line by line and simply ASK Americans if this is what they voted for, if this is the Hope-n-Change they expected… We take the fight to them, on their own agenda… This WOULD BE a huge campaign, radio, TV, every single pundit and every Conservative guest on TV would hammer the “facts”, not talking points…

Let’s get a list going and send it to the RNC and our Congressmen… Let’s give them the ammo that is already stockpiled to the rafters… Let’s stand with Rush and America.

ExTex on March 5, 2009 at 8:54 AM

From TIME mag:

Back to Gibbs. His Sun King moment came when he construed Limbaugh’s opposition as “wishing and hoping for economic failure in this country.” Certainly, it’s tricky to find the line between President and nation, especially in a time of crisis. And Limbaugh’s defense — “What’s so strange about being honest?” — was not exactly in tune with his reactions to Democratic critics of George W. Bush. (See Bush’s biggest economic mistakes.)

But the words of Theodore Roosevelt, issued in the midst of a world war, may still be apt in our present troubles. “To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile but is morally treasonable to the American public.” Roosevelt said this, of course, when he was no longer President.

ExTex on March 5, 2009 at 8:57 AM

It’s Republicans who are suffering from having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric.

There’s no needle there. It’s a broad open space, more like a platform…

hawksruleva on March 5, 2009 at 8:58 AM

Whats the harm? The harm is that the most powerful office in the world is giving the appearance of being intimidated by a media figure. Media figures are supposed to discuss what the White House does, not the other way around.

Its petty, its weak, its underhanded. All of which dminishes an office that America needs to lead, not follow. The fact that other talking heads are following suit on this one is a terrible precedent, what they ought to be talking about is thats an abuse of power for the Presidency to go after a public figure who isnt in an office, no matter how well connected they may be. Enemies list indeed, Gibbs isnt even being vague, hes just going after people.

If they don’t know what comes next, they’re morons. After Alinsky is Lenin. Or Marx.

“Owners of capital will stimulate the working class to buy more and more of expensive goods, houses and mechanical products, pushing them to take more and more expensive credits, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to the bankruptcy of banks, which will have to be nationalized, and the State will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism.” Karl Marx, Das Kapital, 1867

hawksruleva on March 5, 2009 at 9:07 AM

Rush represents the 1st Amendment, and our possible fate of losing it. He is a private citizen; his career and money shouldn’t matter. Obama and his lib trolls in congress (with the help of senators Snowjob and Collins, no doubt) seek to stifle free speech.

AP, if you or any of the house trolls on this blog think this is acceptable, then you should reconsider. Everyone’s free speech is at stake… they’re just coming for conservatives first.

hawksruleva on March 5, 2009 at 9:07 AM

He would have admired his ambition and would be both envious and admiring that he (Francisco) himself did not get the opportunity to build something from nothing with nothing but pure desire and talent, as Rush has done. This is how he felt about Hank Rearden.

True_King on March 5, 2009 at 9:25 AM

Obama’s not attacking Rush, he’s attacking Americans in this country who agree with Rush on anything.

This is an attack by an unqualified, corrupt and incompetent wanna be despot on his own people.

The sooner Obama-Mugabe gets thrown bodily out of the White House, the better for everyone.

NoDonkey on March 5, 2009 at 9:28 AM

I wish some Republican, when ask if he “wants Obama to fail”, would turn the question on the MSM fool and ask him the following; “Did you want George Bush to fail???” and it would all be over in that second…exposed for what it is..a racist, bigoted question.
I WANT OBAMA TO FAILNo bones about it, anything less ruins the country far worse than any depression….
