The obligatory “Rush challenges Obama to a debate” post

posted at 5:15 pm on March 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

The transcript of this afternoon’s stemwinder is up at his site. Will Gibbs take the bait tomorrow, “counterproductive” though it may be? I’m guessing no, but hope for easy content springs eternal.

A choice passage:

But make no mistake about it. Emanuel is the leader of all of this. Carville and Begala are just trying to ride my fame into their fortune and become relevant again. Begala and Carville, don’t confuse them with the power brokers that are managing this. It all Emanuel. Begala and Carville are second-rate talking heads on CNN. CNN has no audience. Rahm Emanuel is the power behind the throne — and don’t let his effeminate nature and his ballerina past mislead you on this. He may look effeminate (he was a ballerina at one time) but he has the feral instincts of a female rat defending its young. Well, take a look. When Emanuel and Carville and Begala are together (and I’ve seen pictures) it looks like a reunion of the Village People. (singing) Y! M! C! A!

And the big finish:

Rahm Emanuel is leading the team going after a private citizen, and the Drive-By Media applaud, get on board and help further the mission. We live in different times. So if you can wipe me out — and, by the way, Mr. President, and Mr. Emanuel: Don’t make the mistake of assuming I’m wiping myself out here in the process. I want to thank you guys for elevating me beyond the stature I already earned and achieved, because now more and more Americans have the opportunity to learn who you really are, what your ideas will really accomplish, and what damage and harm I think your policies will bring for a very, very long time to them and to this country. So I want to thank you for the opportunity. Obviously, it’s a threat targeting me. I’ve extended the invitation. I’m looking forward to hearing back from whoever in your cabal one way or the other on accepting my offer.

RCP has audio if you’d rather listen. Exit question: I’ve been arguing about this all day with commenters and still haven’t gotten a good answer. Why the fixation on Rush as a “private citizen”? The idea, I take it, is that Obama’s bringing the enormous power of the presidency to bear on a poor, defenseless Joe Public, but Limbaugh’s anything but defenseless (as today’s debate challenge proves) and considerably more powerful, I think we’d all agree, than the average congressman who would be considered fair game as a public official. If the White House had picked him out of a phone book or was rooting around in his trash, that’d be an egregious breach of privacy, but he’s one of the most powerful people in American media, with a following in the millions, and they haven’t done anything untoward (yet?). In fact, strictly speaking, they’re not “going after” him at all. They’re going after the GOP, to tar them by association with Rush and they’re willing to inflate his influence to do so. It’s Republicans who are suffering from having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric. What harm has Rush suffered? His stature’s never been greater, as he himself acknowledges right here.

Because, at the end of the day, Rush IS a private citizen.

It’s so hilarious that Rush has totally hijacked the GOP.

Dave Rywall on March 4, 2009 at 5:18 PM

The best part of his show was the last half hour where he explains conservatism again and again tells people to not compromise principles and explains what he means by needing to focus on principles and philosophy instead of policy. Because policy follows from core principles and philosophy.

Hopefully, instead of just making fun of this, you will share his great comments from the last hour of his show.

No, he’ll just lower himself to calling out the radio host in public, and then backing down when it doesn’t work.

Brazen cowardice.

Why the fixation on Rush as a “private citizen”?

Because it is not Presidential behavior, for the White House to engage a private citizen (not even a Congresscritter or Senator, except in extreme cases) in such a way. It is Precedential behavior, however. So, there you go.

Right. But not just any private citizen. He hammers Obama every day for hours for millions of listeners, and then the White House turns around and says something as meager as “He’s the head of the Republican Party,” and suddenly a terrible line has been crossed?

Christien on March 4, 2009 at 5:23 PM

Pretty clever actually. If they make him up to be the head of the GOP, then a debate makes sense. But I think the WH is going to bail out of this fight.

The rest of Republicans maybe diapered up, but Rush is a fighter. Thankfully.

Because it is not Presidential behavior, for the White House to engage a private citizen in such a way.

That is correct. It’s the precedent set. And the arguments are on a personal level. Obama made Hannity part of almost every other sentence there for a while.

no, “AllahPundit”, the President of the United States and his flunkies ARE ‘going after’ a private citizen: ridiculing him in public, telling legislators not to listen to him, etc

Can’t you understand that this is something that a POTUS just should not do–not ever? It demeans the office, and is an obvious ploy meant to distract public debate from an increasingly dire economic situation.

We could be coming to ‘Weimar Time’ and this Fool and his skinny-moustache pasty-faced boys are attacking a radio talk show host. It’s unseemly, and it is an attack

Do you want Rush physically attacked before you’ll call the Obama efforts here ‘an attack’?

You sound jealous: Rush is what you want to be, but aren’t….. ( okay, except for the weight thing )

Rush is one of few private citizens who can afford to criticize Obama, that’s how bad it is. Think about what they did to JTP.

the_nile on March 4, 2009 at 5:24 PM

I take exception to it because Rush his not an elected official. He is a private citizen who can clock out when his show is done. I found it egregious when Nixon went after his enemies even though most of them were private citizens. Obama is using his pulpit to hammer away at a guy who criticized him. What purpose does that serve?

You are right in saying that Rush is not a typical private citizen, but he would have never even been on the political radar if that was the case. It is stupid to argue otherwise.

progressoverpeace on March 4, 2009 at 5:25 PM

I dunno, it seems the libtards in NY keep auditing him.
This is lose/lose for Obama. He called Limbaugh out, his minions elevated him, and He said numerous times he was willing to talk with his enemies.
So now Limbaugh gives him his chance, much more eloquently than Hannity’s beer date offer, and what’s Obama gonna do? “Lower” himself to show up on a talk-show. [Now Bush and Cheney both went on, but I'm pretty sure they didn't do Air America.] Send a flunky, and appear scared? Try to ignore it, and still look scared? They tried to tie the GOP to what they thought would be a polarizing figure, and they make themselves look distracted and impotent.

Yeah, he has so little time on his hands between his weekend getaways to Chicago for Valentine’s Day and travelling back and forth across the country to sign “stimulus” bills 4 days later. I’m sure he can’t find the time between that extremely busy schedule for 3 hours to debate actual substance instead of reading teleprompters and saying HOPE and CHANGE every 5 seconds.

Geeze don’t buy the distortion of what Rush said and has reiterated time and time again. Rush wants Obama’s efforts to transform our country into a socialist paradise to fail. I disagree with your premise this is going after the GOP, via Rush to make them “take sides now”. No one will give 2 cents worth of this issue 2-3 months out. By 2010 – the “Rush vs Obama” will have been long gone and I am confident 0 Rep House members and 3 Senate Reps voting for Porkulous, combined with Jindal and other prominent elected Reps lets us know where Reps are today.

I think you are putting too much emphasis on today with “having to thread the needle between defending Limbaugh and rejecting the “I want him to fail” rhetoric.,” within the big picture.

I think Rush has a bigger point. Even though he will make money from all of this he is doing it on his own dime that he earned through what he does instead of doing it on the back of the taxpayers or the weight of the office.

This is just another example of government officials not doing their jobs. They don’t need to focus on Rush anyway. He only talks to the 46% that voted against him anyway and those listeners and voters aren’t going anywhere anyway.

That administration needs to focus on their tasks at hand. Economy, budgets and deficits.

Wrong:

President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

I’m not throwing him under the bus. I’m saying he can handle himself, as can Michelle, and he did a fine job of it here. I concede there’s a debate to be had about how much influence someone would need to be able to have a “fair fight” with the White House, but I think a guy with 20 million listeners qualifies. This White House does.

Spirit of 1776 on March 4, 2009 at 5:24 PM

Exactly

Did George Bush go after Larry King or Rachel Ray or Al Franken or……………….. ???

no–of course not.

Rush is a ‘private citizen’ because he does not hold elected or appointed government office? Speaky Engllish, you savvy?

You are confusing ‘public figure’ with ‘private citizen’–you can be both, as long as you do not hold government office

Janos Hunyadi on March 4, 2009 at 5:29 PM

Obama would do himself a huge favor if he started acting somewhat Presidential and stopped with the snarky, off the cuff remarks (Rush, Las Vegas, etc.). Treat visiting heads of state with dignity and respect (blowing off his plans with Brown yesterday). And maybe learn something about the stock market so he doesn’t say stupid things like “price earnings ratio.”

But it’s increasingly apparent that he’s incapable of personal or professional growth. And he’s always going to get a smackdown for that. The Russians have already shown they are up to the challenge. Everyone will get a turn.

Obama is a clown.

califcon on March 4, 2009 at 5:29 PM

It’s not that… I look at it like this. when did Bush ever attack Cindy Sheehan directly? When did Bush ever attack Keith Olberman directly? (even when he outright lied about him and got more personal than Rush ever has) It is unbecomming and petty of the whitehouse to do so. They are truely immature children.

BadBrad on March 4, 2009 at 5:27 PM

Sheenan is a loony Gold Star mom and Olbermann doesn’t get the ratings to warrant much attention.

Limbaugh has a huge audience and Steele called him “a leader”.

The Messiah just called me…………hold on………..OK, yes Mr. President……….fine…………sorry, it was The One……..he called Putin and wants to trade Rush to Russia for a suite for the weekend in the Crimea ……..hey and who said Hilary and Bama couldn’t run Foreign Policy?

Cinday Blackburn on March 4, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Bush wouldn’t even go after the New York Times for their acts of treason and this White House is guns out for a talk show host who makes good arguments against their insane policies – that is stopping them from shoving these policies down our throats before anyone realizes what has happened. Change, indeed.

progressoverpeace on March 4, 2009 at 5:30 PM

I’m not throwing him under the bus. I’m saying he can handle himself, as can Michelle, and he did a fine job of it here. I concede there’s a debate to be had about how much influence someone would need to be able to have a “fair fight” with the White House, but I think a guy with 20 million listeners qualifies. Michelle probably doesn’t.

Allahpundit on March 4, 2009 at 5:28 PM

I’ll ask again AP when is the magic cutoff in audience until you check your “private citizen” status at the door….and does it bother you we know more about Limbaugh’s medical past than the Obamessiah’s???

sven10077 on March 4, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Your envy is palpable.

Yeah, that must be it. All criticism of Rush, even over minutiae about what constitutes a “private citizen,” is rooted in ulterior motives. Now that the thread has turned imbecilic, I’ll kindly take my leave.

This is all a moot point, since Fibbsie chickened out on behalf of his boss.

Interesting point of view. It is, of course, those that rally to Rush’s side here that are the “influence” that makes it fair. In other words, the fact that people defend him makes him fair to pick on. Interesting. Ironic.

They don’t need to focus on Rush anyway. He only talks to the 46% that voted against him anyway and those listeners and voters aren’t going anywhere anyway.

Quite true. Which makes this whole play seem to one to separate Washington R’s from the base.

By the way Turner Classic Movies is spotlighting Ronald Reagan movies tonight and on the 11th, 18th and 25th.

Back to the topic: Rush snookered the ‘smart boys’ big time. By challenging Obama to a debate, if Obama refuses to debate Rush it makes Obama look weak.

I was all set to answer Allah’s question by pointing out that this level of unpresidential behavior is new, then I realized that this isn’t unlike something Clinton’s flying monkeys would have engaged in. And there they are, circling around the middle of this.

Democrats are like children, from top to bottom.

Drywall poses as Canadian but seems supremely ignorant about Canadian life & times as well as indifferent about what’s going on there. Every Canadian I ever met, here and in Canada, uses their country and society as a frame of reference

This troll is strangely different………..

Dave Rywall on March 4, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Meanwhile, your president is obsessed with Rush, even to the point of having strategy meetings about him…doesn’t the president have a country to run? What is he doing listening and responding to a talk show host? We are in a global economic meltdown, and he is in a fight with some guy with a radio show from Florida.
Here is some advice to the president…have some strategy meetings on how to fix our country, and don’t worry about a talk show host, who is on the air for only a few hours a day.

Allahpundit on March 4, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Being able to handle himself is not the issue, AllahPundit. Something isn’t just or unjust simply because the object of the attack can handle oneself. The onus is on the Administration.

It’s like a man hitting a woman. A man should *never* hit a woman, no matter whether or not she can ‘handle herself’. A gentleman simply does not do that.

Same thing with the Federal government. It is above the dignity of the Federal government to be attacking-smearing-making fun of media members. It’s a matter of dignity and unofficial ethics and class and respect for the position of authority.

I really can’t figure out why you don’t understand that, other than you just don’t like Rush Limbaugh so your view is tainted.
