Quote of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on March 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

“‘We’ve tried, Mr. President,’ I explained. ‘But there are unsavory elements within the party who keep bringing them back in.’

My reference, obviously, was to the self-styled luminaries of ‘populism’ who hang like a millstone around the Republican neck — the Sarah Palins, the Plumbing Joes, the Bobby Jindals, the Rush Limbaughs, the motley middlebrow state college pretenders to the conservative throne. A shared contempt for these arriviste oafs unites the Nassau summitteers perhaps even more than our shared fondness for a snifter of well-behaved armagnac VSOP. I have made no secret of my feelings about la Palin and her grim brood of ill-mannered snowbillies, as well that horrid toilet tinkerer from from Toledo whose fifteen minutes have somehow refused to expire. The recent emergence of Bobby Jindal and Rush Limbaugh in the intraparty maelstrom yet affords fresh opportunities for conservative dismality.”

I should probably hit the sack too. I’m just gettin warmed up though!

Brian1972 on March 5, 2009 at 4:10 AM

Yes, I need to slow down the storming synapses and get horizontal for a few hours. I assume the conservative movement will still be around to talk about when I get up tomorrow, err, this morning. This has been enjoyable all!

Iowahawk rocks.

Brian1972 on March 5, 2009 at 4:14 AM

Ok, finally got it–Bush is a mod con; or, in other words, he’s a Republican [not RINO, but R] with conservative leanings.

Now, I’m going to bed so I don’t drag myself into work later this morning.

The Levin/Frum debate proves we have moles among us.

They act as a liaison.

I think they are conscious operatives.

“As I explained all this to President Obama, I assured him that there are still many conservatives like us who patriotically wish him every success, no matter what policies he has in mind”

KPH do you seriously expect us to grant you some sort of credibility as a “guiding light” here when you couch your analysis with the words “turn off” as though determining who should become the face of conservatism is an episode of Flava of Love?

This ain’t Temptation Island champ, one side is absolutely ruthless over wanting power to cast the US into their ideological bent and the other side lets people like Frum gift us with Juan Queeg.

He is mocking the hell out of the overwrought, self-indulgent, self-congratulatory natterings of Chris Buckley, K Parker, MoDo and Frum…..

The GOP bluebloods hate Conservatism with as much verve as the democrats, and seem to have largely decided better to simper in hell as a minority party, than lead with angels like Sarah Palin as the head of the party at some future date.

Admit it, you have a “man crush” on the Internet Warrior, don’t ya?

It is a shame, that the folks you mentioned, along with Allah P here at HotAir and so many other “elite” pundants and pontificators seem to want The Messiah to suceed…

Not understanding that for The One to suceed America must forever change from a Nation of personal rights and resopnsibilities and morals and principals to a Nation of commune, oneness, from each by his ability to pay and to each based on need, union controled bussiness and womb to tomb big Government nanny state… Just don’t understand.

nothing to understand…to them it is not horrifying how pervasive and invasive the machine is becoming it is horrifying that the wrong people are at the controls…

The Nabob Nine as I like to call the self-appointed “too smart for the GOP be happy I am gracing you with my presence” crowd buy into a majority of the ideas pushed by the leftoids end of story….

they are the Social Revolutionaries led by Kerensky….

not enough to beat back the reds but big enough to hamstring the whites getting ready to nail the reds…

Remember in the dark future that O’bambi would not have happened except for “pragmatic bargainers” on the right who demanded we reach out to the Colin Powell wing of the party’s by choosing a “moderate”….

well the Colin Powell wing got what they wanted and then voted for Chicago Jesus and still it was within 5%….

had the GOP nominated either Mitt or Rudy we’d have won.

But I vote. And I know a lot of young people who vote. And I (a 50 ish woman) and they (30 ish voters) are turned off by Rush.

I vote and also know a lot of young people who vote. But I (a 50ish woman) and they (30ish voters, 2 of them my sons) are NOT turned off by Rush. He gives a VOICE to topics and discussion that many conservatives wish they had an opportunity to say outside of their living rooms.

And either you are trying to win elections or you are lying.

Recently these have been separate characteristics? How’s that current White House and it’s band of merry men working for you? The whole D campaign was a snow job of lies and winning an election. As a whole the R party was a big disappointment during the campaign – don’t address the lies, don’t address the underhanded tactics and hope (there’s that word again) that the undecided segment votes your way because you’re the “nice” guy. The lies and deceit wrapped in pretty paper and big bows with promises that sounded too good to be true then and (wait a minute) now we’re finding was a smoke screen for a scary, socialist agenda.

Limbaugh speaks to the true base but apparently that wasn’t enough to win the elections. So maybe we should be more open minded and try to appeal to a broader audience?

No, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win this last election, but then we didn’t have a candidate who was vocal enough, conservative enough and apparently based on some comments I’ve read…. cute enough and buff-bod enough! geez.

Not saying you have to compromise your principles.. but he is not a good marketing tool as is. I think he is very smart and has a lot to offer but I would prefer it if he offered it in a more palatable way.

Marketing tool? I doubt Rush see’s himself as a marketing tool. Again, he says what he thinks and feels and supports in the conservative party and has the platform to do it in. IMHO, He has no intention of being palatable as you say, that’s not his style. Besides which, if he presented his program in a milquetoast manner, I doubt he would have the audience he has NOR would the Democrats be so disturbed by him. They KNOW that Rush has the capability to renew and wake up the conservative base (you know that 48%+- that said NO in Nov) and that scares them. big time! He might make a few more people start thinking or wake up the masses towards a movement to regain our country and values. Why else would the White House (not another talk show host or the MSM – the White House) pay so much attention to him? The Press Secretary “calls out anyone who challenges Obama”??? OMG! Does this not scare you?

Well, the head of the RNC, hello? had to apologize to Rush this week. He gets more attention than the head of the RNC. We’re all tripping over ourselves to defend him.

Because of how Steele said what he did in response to a question designed to talk about Rush. The liberal, socialists want Rush to be the topic of discussion. They want conservatives to be so focused on this single topic, we won’t see the underhanded, slimy tricks they’re trying to pull on America. They hope that we’ll be so side tracked (and it seems we are! your last sentence is so correct) that we will wake up one day to the socialist world (notice I said world) they want to run.

We don’t have to sacrifice your core ideals. We just need to get someone who can speak intelligently without all that pompousness and controversy

Never will I sacrifice my principles or ideals. Rush is speaking with intelligence – and in this case apparently the pompousness and controversy is working…. it sure bothers the Democrats and is getting the conservatives fired up (one way or the other – finally there’s some life showing in the group).

Now who can add to the base? Because Rush just turned a whole bunch of people away with the “fail” speech that he (and others) then had to spend weeks explaining to the masses who didn’t GET it. Sure they may be idiots. But they may hold the same principles (ideas, policies, whaterver) as you and we want them to vote on OUR side next time.

See that’s the problem… if people actually listened to the “fail” speech it wouldn’t have needed any explanation. Unfortunately too many folks still pay attention to the MSM who “selectively” focused on just a small portion of what he said. Maybe just maybe this current maelstrom of Rush focus will make people finally think “maybe there’s some truth” being said. It’s certainly made some of the liberals listen to Rush’s program, they were calling in yesterday. I’m thinking IF they so believed in the One, why would they give any credence to Rush Limbaugh?

Cannot list all the four letter words to describe this rant. I am one of the proud “hicks” who served this country and worked and paid taxes. To have men/women serving to protect this a## is sad. I am a conservative not an R or a D. This country would be better off with more “hicks” and less A##’s.

Calm down, hillbilly. It’s Iowahawk, after all.

He’s just being deadly serious when he channels the ultra-elite in the Ford wing of the Republican party…

Wanderlust on March 5, 2009 at 8:08 AM

Ah, Iowahawk, always a pleasure to read… I had just noticed it in the dailies then clicked here when the passage showed up…

Rush is, as ever, a showman, but his style is not one I can stomach although his beliefs and ideals are ones I do understand and agree with. It is always interesting that those who wish to demean the principles go after the presenter, never those things being presented. If style trumps substance, you are left with fluff like we have in the White House now – it was all style hiding a vile substance.

It is interesting reading between Federalist and Anti-Federalist documents you can often find invective against individuals, but that was often based on the principles being espoused. Even such bombasts as Luther Martin made sure that his position was clear and why he felt that those attacking him were in the wrong from a policy and philosophical position… then he maligned their character. Today we cannot get such honesty from critics.

I do wish that Republicans would stop the necrophilia of trotting out Reagan at every turn: the man had good ideas and the party did not accept them and build on them. Smaller government, less intrusive government, lower taxes and greater liberty by removing the onerous burden of government made him a standout, and yet even he did not govern in that realm. No, lower taxes aren’t everything as the entire concept was integrated that would lead to sound fiscal footing for the Nation and increased prosperity with less government oversight, regulation and dictating to the common man. That is what those ideals come to and he stated them. His good character and lack of real opposition won the day for re-election, but by then the ‘Reagan Revolution’ was on the wane to soon be buried by the process oriented Republicans who were more than happy with the ‘conservative’ idea of keeping intrusive and big government around.

Truly I find no one who popularly espouses such ideals. And I’m coming to detest those who can’t understand that ‘vigorous’ government that is intrusive into the affairs of the common man is always corrosive to politics and that we only need vigor in protection of the Nation, not our society as we are supposed to figure out what is a social good on our own. I like the idea of small, limited and restricted government given very little to do and having our expectation that those very few things are to be done well and accountably. I can pick very few organs of government that I think we actually need or are mandated by the Constitution… I would be more than happy to have just those and leave the rest up to the States and the people just like it says in that document that is our common agreement as a society. But then, that isn’t ‘conservative’ these days: sticking to good sense and what we understand as the role of government by our common agreement and that giving ‘good things’ to a necessary evil is the worst evil of all.

Which is why I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the Republican party is not salvageable. Returning to power via a third party will take longer. On the other hand, will returning to power, with such as these in major positions of influence, do any good?

Iowahawk turns his pen on RINO’s and it isn’t pretty and it isn’t a fair fight! RINO’s get it hard and nasty and funny from the Master of Disaster once again!

If Iowahawk ever walks into a bar where you are sitting, pray that he never looks your way! If he does, look at the floor! Don’t EVER look him in the eye because he may decide to grab you by your skinny little pencil neck and stuff you up your own a$$! And then he will write about it and you will be humiliated before your wife and her friends and your friends and your city and the nation. And what will you be able to do about it? Nothing! Because…well…because you are a punk, and he is Iowahawk and he just slapped you hard, the way a pimp slaps his whore! And you better like it or he will do it all over again until you do!

Therein lies the conundrum….

the RiNOs love being used by the leftoids and barely tolerate victory with the right….the Union Boyz and Blacks rather seem to enjoy being the cousin It of the democratic party the Union guys vote against their core beliefs like clockwork and then wind up watching as the donk pandering to their moneyed religious left the Sierra club eats their jobs….they don’t get it the ONLY energy that is acceptable to the enviro-whackos is no energy and until we get nullpoint energy or make vehicles run on love the donk energy policy eats detroit….

I think the republican establishment has decided that the country has irreversibly moved to the left and into the American-idol culture, and are engaged in reforming the party accordingly.
Conservatives might have to start divorcing themselves from the republicans and organize to elect (and hold accountable) conservatives in either party.

I, for one, plan to be gentle with the people that voted for Obama, and are now seeing the truth.

I suggest we conservatives put a blanket around them, make them some tea, sit them next to the fireplace, and give them a chance to recover from their date-rape. After all, they were as a vulnerable 17 year old that didn’t believe her father knew that guy was scum.

They will not want to admit they were wrong, they’ve proven themselves to be poor judge of character, and we need to give them a place to come back to.

I’m not saying change our principles. Hell, I’ve got enough comments here to prove that.

I’m saying be gentle.

“Dear Sven I fell in love with a man whom I suspected was just a smooth talking ne’er’dowell but couldn’t resist his dusky charms….

just the other day he gave a cute young thing a lift in his wheels….

Sven I just want him to know I understand and there are no regrets….”

I’m Sven Kasem and this goes out to the Nabob Nine….

Break it… to me gently
Let me down… the easy way
Make me feel… you still love me
If it’s just… just for one more day

Break it… to me gently
So my tears my tears won’t fall… too fast
If you must go… then go slowly
Let me love you… ’til the last

The love we shared… for oh so long
Is such a big part of me.
If you must take… your love away
Take it gradually.

And break it… to me gently
Give me time… oh give me a little time to ease the pain
If you must go… then go slowly
Cos I’ll never… love again

If you must take… your love away
Take it gradually…

And break it… to me gently
Give me time… oh give me a little time to ease the pain
Love me just a little longer
Cause I’ll never never love again
Cause I’ll never love… never love again.

The problem with this bunch is that they only want a “big tent” if they get to be the ones in charge. They say they want a big tent — especially more middle class and blue collar voters — but they look down with palpable distaste and condescension at those very people. They want to lead because they think they’re better — it just doesn’t work.

Guys, could you please fill me in as to why Dreher is a Rino.
I read “Crunchy Cons” and as an anti-hunting, anti-fur(except on a living animal) vegetarian I agreed with some of it.
Except for the “animal” thing-which I admit is lefty-I’m solidly right of center.
I’m not really familiar with Dreher’s NRO stories though.
As for Frum-I read “The Right Man”-and it was a great read.
His wife was/is one of the founders of the “Independent Womens Forum”-which is conservative.
What happened to him?
