Laura Ingraham to Steele: Why didn’t you get angry at Hughley’s “Nazi Germany” crack?

posted at 1:40 pm on March 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

Seven minutes from this morning’s show courtesy of Laura’s producer, Tom Elliott. Say this for the man: Whatever his failings, he sure can dodge a question when he wants to. See also his appearance below on “Today,” dismissing Lauer’s tedious interrogation about Rush and whether he too wants Obama to fail as a “sideshow.” Indeed. Let’s move on.

The “Nazi” bit, which really was his lowest moment on Hughley’s show, is at the beginning, followed by an exchange on why the GOP’s polls are still low (well handled by Steele) and Ingraham pressing him on whether he’s prepared to pull the plug on Collins, Snowe, and Specter. He’s still promising to defer to the state party chairmen, but we’ll see how long that lasts if Specter throws a few more important votes The One’s way.

The pity is that Steele doesn’t have a cult of personality following. Since most conservatives, (who obviously can’t think for themselves, and clearly don’t gravitate to people based on principle) are sheep, everyone should be rallying around the Germany remark. Hey, it’s not that bad!

Spirit of 1776 on March 4, 2009 at 1:47 PM

The Nazi comment was made in the interview before Hughley brought up Rush Limbaugh. In other words even if Hughley did not bring up Rush, Steele would have still not responded properly and shown that he ws indignant at the cheap comment that the Republican convention looked like a Nazi rally.

technopeasant on March 4, 2009 at 1:48 PM

You know, Steele’s a good guy who got caught completely off guard by an amazingly rude and nasty interviewer. If the howling “true conservative” mob insists upon running him out of the RNC because of this one mistake, well, good luck finding anybody decent to try to lead you again.

In defense of Michael Steele, I think many conservatives have been conditioned by Hollywood, public schools, universities, etc. to respond to the word “Fascist” as though to a personal greeting.

I know I’m in the minority here, but if republicans are going regain any seats in the northeast. We have to learn to cope with people like Collins, Specter and Snowe. Any moderates able to be elected in the northeast are going to be vote similar to them. It’s a choice between being a forever minority party or expanding the tent and allowing moderates in.

Yes, basically. It’s not unfair to say that the conservative movement is still in pain, and part of it is frantic. We had no representation in the election, and the predictable results arrived. Now, we’re out of power, and it seems like the party that was the vessel for our message still is trying to marginalize us. I think some have simply given up hope and will latch on to any leader they can get their hands on, ergo Steele.

Yeah, totally out of the blue the GOP was compared to Nazis by some uninformed jerk. Which has never happened before. Sure, Steele was probably ready to leap to our defense had the guy compared it to a Klan rally, but the Nazi thing… shocker.

Yes, basically. It’s not unfair to say that the conservative movement is still in pain, and part of it is frantic. We had no representation in the election, and the predictable results arrived. Now, we’re out of power, and it seems like the party that was the vessel for our message still is trying to marginalize us. I think some have simply given up hope and will latch on to any leader they can get their hands on, ergo Steele.

funky chicken on March 4, 2009 at 1:50 PM

That implies that he isn’t up to the job then. The RNC head should be prepared for gottcha questions and shoudn’t allow the Dems to create turmoil in the party. He is missing too any opportunities to frame the discussions. This is the bigtime and it’s looking like the job is “above his paygrade.”

Same, all I am getting is the Lauer interview. Agreed too it was a good interview. One thing I like about Steele is he is the antithesis of a Howard Dean who brought nothing but buffoonery to the Dems. I think Steele has gotten the message loud and clear about throwing the conservatives under the bus. I haven’t heard Laura Ingrahm but I think Rush and Steele handled the matter well in keeping it between them.

Obama’s strategy is simple. He wants to make sure Americans are not talking about ideas by linking his opponents to whatever unpopular person or thing he can. A vote for Mccain was a vote for Bush. You’re either with Obama or with Rush. As long as conservatives stay out of that trap, conservative ideas will grow. Ignore Obama and continue to focus on why individual freedom is a good thing. Don’t leave it for the Republican leadership to do. Take some personal initiative and find an opportunity to tell someone else about how individual freedom is a good thing.

MadisonConservative on March 4, 2009 at 2:02 PM

MC is correct, many of us feel that Republicans have no desire to return to true Conservatism. We worry and watch as America is taken from within, as has been the radicals plan all along. We warned America. We were called out as racists, as loony fringe… We were told that Obama would govern from the center by the “smartest” in our faux-Conservative media… Now, again, we are ignored as we warn of the clear and present danger that The Messiah presents.

Mark Garnett on March 4, 2009 at 2:37 PM

So when I say the Democratic party looks lie a Klan meeting (a snarky way to point out that the leadership is basically all White) it’s ok when DL Hugly says the same about the Republicans (a snarky way to point out the a similar point) it’s the worst thing to happen in the world?

Steele is making an effort to reach people who have been cut off from their Republican roots (until the 60s all Blacks were Republicans, especially in the south)and you don’t do that by letting the conversation be about your favorite talk radio guy (mine is Fred now) but by articulating the idea that we are a big tent.

Except in the Hot Air comments.

Steele isn’t perfect but who could do a better job with a base that undermines you by actually being offended when you rightly claim leadership of the party, are tiresomely tolerant of extremely childish race baiting (Don’t want to diss one of the brothers?” Really inchdeep?) and in general seem to be happy to be in the minority politically because it gives you the chance to Kos it up on the Internet.

You don’t like the way Steele represents Republicans (and half of you hate Republicans and aren’t in the party anyway according to comments you leave here and elsewhere) then you do it.

When will I see you guys recruiting people?

When will you be somewhere explaining to people who have think we’re all fascists that we’re not?

When will you be doing outreach to those conservative people who vote Democrat? When will you be doing something other than listening to AM radio and actually trying to reduce the number of Republican voters?

How’s all that ideological purity working out for the Libertarian Party? Because at the end of the day we’re all going to be living in a European style sociaist state where we’re all poor, our guns are illegal and most of us will be in jail for saying the things on the Internet we do now when we accept the U.N. Declaration that bans criticism of Islam.

But at least you guys made it clear Rush is your hero and got rid of the RINOS…

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/03/the_republican_pivot.asp

Look, the party and the movement were exhausted by the events of 01-08. How do ya think we ended up with McCain (whom I supported, but with realism) or how McCain ended up with Palin (whom I supported strongly and still have high hopes for, but who was forced on center stage way ahead of schedule)? It’s rising from the ashes even as we write. Give it/us some time to get going.
