Hope and Change: The Operation Rushbo Distraction

posted at 12:30 pm on March 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If the first six weeks of the Barack Obama administration can be summed up in one sentence, it would be this: Obama fiddled with Rush Limbaugh while Wall Street burnedPolitico reports that the demonization of Rush Limbaugh comes as a deliberate strategy by Obama and the Democrats, who hoodwinked people into believing that a Chicago Machine pol really wanted to change the partisan nature of politics.  Starting in October, Obama relied on an old hand in attack politics to devise this strategy — and rolled it out even in the middle of an economic meltdown:

Top Democrats believe they have struck political gold by depicting Rush Limbaugh as the new face of the Republican Party, a full-scale effort first hatched by some of the most familiar names in politics and now being guided in part from inside the White House.

The strategy took shape after Democratic strategists Stanley Greenberg and James Carville included Limbaugh’s name in an October poll and learned their longtime tormentor was deeply unpopular with many Americans, especially younger voters. Then the conservative talk-radio host emerged as an unapologetic critic of Barack Obama shortly before his inauguration, when even many Republicans were showering him with praise.

Soon it clicked: Democrats realized they could roll out a new GOP bogeyman for the post-Bush era by turning to an old one in Limbaugh, a polarizing figure since he rose to prominence in the 1990s.

Read all of Jonathan Martin’s report, which makes clear that Carville and Paul Begala coordinated this effort with Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel on their morning conference calls.  Clearly, Obama wants to use his media contacts to play rough with critics through coordinated personal-attack campaigns.  Martin neglects to mention, though, that Obama himself started off this attack by telling Republicans that they can’t listen to Limbaugh any longer if they want to have access to Democratic-controlled agendas on the Hill.

So far, Obama’s attack machine — and there’s no other term for it — has mostly succeeded.  While the markets have lost 18% of their value in the six weeks of his leadership, all Democrats can talk about is Rush.  Newspapers and media have followed suit, and so have the blogs.  Usually excellent sites like The Moderate Voice and Political Machine have turned themselves into almost nothing but anti-Limbaugh sites, where Jazz Shaw’s light satire of the trend gets completely subsumed in the overwhelming focus on someone who has no direct power on policy or enforcement.  Instead of focusing attention on the real policy leaders in Washington — all Democrats — whose every move has received a resounding vote of no confidence from investors, they have allowed themselves to get distracted by a deliberate strategy of misdirection originating in the highest levels of the White House.

It’s reminiscent of Nixon’s enemies list, and it comes from the supposed messiah of Hope and Change.

Rush Limbaugh provides commentary, criticism, analysis, and entertainment, not political leadership, as Rush himself would attest.  He has an audience of 20 million people, which makes attacks on him by people like Michael Steele and other Republicans rather stupid.  Instead of dividing the Right, they would do better to act as Bobby Jindal did and find ways to unite the Right.  But with Republicans out of power, this is mere sideshow.  It’s a circus provided by Democrats to cover up their economic incompetence and massively ineffective spending programs.  It’s also a harbinger of things to come as this administration fumbles one issue after another, as they will only need to expand the personal attacks against critics rather than respond to the criticism itself.

Operation Rushbo only succeeds if people swallow it.

Update (AP): Boehner called it a “distraction” today too but I think that misses the point. Economic ruin will be with us long after this dust-up with Rush has blown away, which is to say, in the long run this won’t distract anyone from anything. What the Democrats are really trying to do is rebrand the GOP. They’re keenly attuned to that sort of thing, as we were reminded again just yesterday. I also wouldn’t call what they’re doing to Rush an “attack.” It’s more like promotion, albeit promotion for their own ends. In fact, if there’s anyone who benefits unambiguously from all this, it’s Rush himself. The Democrats might miscalculate in overestimating his supposed unpopularity, and the GOP leadership will go on squirming at having to defend or reject the idea of wanting Obama to fail, but all Limbaugh has to worry about is an expanding audience. His show has never seemed so vital as it does right now, which is precisely why lefties like Peter Daou are starting to worry.

Update (Ed): We’re going to agree to disagree.  I think this article makes the case quite clear that this is an attack policy devised by experienced hands from the Clinton administration at attack politics.  Whether that “rebrands” the GOP is probably secondary; as Carville himself once famously noted, “Your opponent can’t hit back when you have your fist in his face.”  So much for changing the tone in Washington.

If the President is authorizing this kind of attack on a private citizen is it even legal? Could this be a high crime or misdemeanor?

Susan Estrich Warns Democrats About Dangers of Attacking Rush Limbaugh

Trying to beat him at his own game when your own game is played by a different set of rules is a losing proposition. He knows that…

…Rush is wrong on almost everything, by my lights, but the lessons I took from him weren’t about substance, but about craft. By my lights, no one is better at it.

Savage likened the Administration to a gang. Hard to disagree.

If ABC’s Stephuluffagous is involved to any extent he needs to be fired by Disney.

Carville and Begala could care less about America, this political junk is all they live for.

What they don’t realize is Rush is bigger than they are.

Somebody should give her a gentle knock in the head and dislodge “by my lights”.

But she took away the wrong lesson. It’s a combination of substance and craft. If substance didn’t matter, libs would be a hit in the talk radio format.

This entire controversy between the White House and Limbaugh is INSANE!!

DrStock on March 4, 2009 at 10:11 PM

It’s not a distraction.

It perfectly illustrates the schoolyard mentality of the idiot the country put in a position of authority he has no experience to be in.

I hope it continues. There must be enough adults in the country to see it for what it is.

If not, then there is no hope for the country anyway.

Three things come to mind whenever the liberals start a new hate campaign:
1. There they go again, looking for the high of an intense personal hatred;
2. Why is it, though, that such open-minded, sensitive and well-educated people have such a need for a hate object?
3. And what is it about the difficulty of engaging in an exchange of ideas that inspires them to personal attacks?

Analogy—-> Republicans say 2+2= 4. Democrats then claim that 2+2=5, not 4. They go on to claim that their result produces more output by 20%. They spend millions of dollars to convince as many people as possible that they are right and that the republicans are trying to cheat the American people by short changing them. Polls show that the majority of people do in fact support the democrats on this issue and are in favor of the liberal claim that 2+2=5. Some republicans, after reading the polls, suggest that republicans should change their position on this issue to 2+2= 4 1/2. They claim that failing to change their position is political suicide and that not doing so will cause electoral losses. They claim that in order to regain power the republicans must moderate their position and show an ability to compromise if they expect to appeal to the majority of voters. The mainstream media then asks republicans “don’t you hope 2+2=5?”. They ask “do you really want 2+2 to only equal 4 instead of 5?”. “Do you really hope that democrats are wrong?”.

Dollayo on March 4, 2009 at 10:37 PM

from TIME-

Last Friday, Vice President Joe Biden and seven White House cabinet members traveled to Philadelphia to kick off the inaugural gathering of President Obama’s Middle Class Task Force. The task force will convene monthly in cities across the country to confront the problems faced by average Americans. It’s an admirable goal; with rising costs, stagnant wages and job cuts, a Pew Research study found that 78% of self-described middle class Americans have trouble maintaining their current standard of living.

Still, the middle class may have a better shot at making ends meet than at influencing the Middle Class Task Force. That’s because no member of the Middle Class Task Force is actually middle class. While defining America’s most beloved demographic group has never been an exact science, most academics agree that the term refers to anyone earning between $30,000 and $100,000 a year. (Median household income in the U.S. hovers around $50,000.) Every member of the President’s task force – from Biden ($227,000) to Council of Economic Advisors chair Christina Romer ($172,000) to energy secretary Steven Chu ($191,000) – makes well over $150,000, putting them in the top 5% of wage earners.

Why nominate? The President of the United States called Rush out by name. His administration is referring to him almost every day now. The DCCC made a website dedicated to Rush.

Seems that Ogabe has quite the interest in Rush Limbaugh, private citizen; you would think a man smart enough to control policy and guide the spending of trillions of dollars would be able to handle a debate with an “entertainer.”

“In the wake of Rush Limbaugh challenging President Barack Obama to a debate, it has been pointed out to me that before the radio host steps up to face the president, he might want to clear his dance card of some earlier debate challenges. Perhaps he has forgotten, but Limbaugh already has a standing challenge from CNN’s banisher of “bias” and “bull” Campbell Brown, to appear on the air and debate their chief business correspondent, Ali Velshi, who Limbaugh had previously maligned.

Golden. Right now Rush has unfettered access to the airwaves and the ability to articulate. Yeah, Rush should do just that. Velshi is a business correspondent who got his degree in religious studies.

Entelechy on March 4, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Just thinking about Obama grunting and humming his way through the debate, while Rush skins him alive, brings a smile to my face. Of course, it won’t happen, and that’s one of the big reasons for it. It would also be rather foolish for Obama to shatter the aura of mystique and power surrounding the presidency (I know, I know… stop laughing) by climbing into the ring for hand-to-hand political combat with a private citizen. Still, Obama has no one but himself, and his genius political handlers, to blame for painting himself into this corner. No matter what you might think of Bush and his political instincts, he wasn’t foolish enough to build Michael Moore into some kind of arch-enemy and set himself up to be called out. And Obama is uniquely vulnerable because of the increasingly inept and arrogant style of his administration… a lot of the middle-class voters being dismissed as powerless revenue sources, expected to shut up and pay their taxes while Obama’s policies drive their employers out of business, would like to see the would-be Comptroller in Chief answer a few hard questions.

It’s funny to see the same political party that sat the aforementioned propagandist Moore next to ex-presidents at its 2004 convention dismiss the criticism of Rush Limbaugh as irrelevant because he’s just an “entertainer.” In a truly free society, a person doesn’t need to be a state official to have their opinion taken seriously; a president doesn’t have be an economist; a citizen doesn’t have to belong to a trade union; and businessmen don’t have to be politicians.

Doctor Zero on March 4, 2009 at 11:08 PM

OK I am going to rant now and let the chips fall as they may. I have risked my homelife by being so involved in the ongoing debacle and my kids and significant other are PISSED. I have much to lose so I vent freely and hopefully for the last time. Please pick up on the points that interest you – and take to heart – and throw away the rest.

I don’t fear our President, but I have no Hope. I didn’t vote for him, but I would never disrespect only because he gathered the Vote of the People. I try every day to find a glimmer of hope that he has the best interest in sustaining our Nation and advancing our agenda as the most noble, caring and honest Nation that has ever risen to Power.

What I see is a bunch of thugs corrupting the very Nature of our Institutions, people of questionable character being appointed, the Stock Market tanking, billions and trillions of our tax money being spent without due diligence and this Green thing, without any scientific agreement, being thrust in the crux of this agenda without any consensus. I look at Industries being destroyed. Jobs being lost. A Cap & Trade that will only make every American’s life be made harder with the only beneficiary’s being Chicago henchman. And I could go on. It’s not reported, it will just happen without people waking up from the onslaught of panic news.

Oh, and here’s some trash talk from a Democratic party operative, who writes, “Just saying…if you cant stand up to Campbell, you shouldn’t be calling Rahm effeminate and calling out the President.”

Have to go now. Have a great evening.

getalife on March 4, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Yes, before anyone is allowed to criticize the President, they should have to accept all debate challenges from every duly credentialed member of The Media who decides to offer one. And don’t forget the way Rush has incessantly talked up Ali Velshi, making him a household name to Americans by linking him to all Democrats. I’m a little tired of the way every Democrat politician is forced to denounce Al Velshi’s remarks, in every interview they give. When Rush Limbaugh, the most powerful government official in the world and author of several trillion-dollar spending plans, builds up a private citizen like Ali Velshi and tries to portray him as the leader of the opposition party, he should be expected to accept responsibility for his words and meet any challenge from the man he used as a political prop.

Of course, that Limbaugh-Velshi debate will never happen, because Limbaugh is doubtless terrified of the laser wit and powerful economic theories Velshi would bring to the debate. After all, Ali Velshi hails from Canada, the economic powerhouse that serves as bank, marketplace, and technological innovator to the entire free world. And Ali Velshi is on records as correctly predicting the Dow would drop 3000 points after Obama’s election, and faithfully provided Americans with itemized tax bills for all of Obama’s insanely extravagant spending – he’d put up lists of Obama’s spending proposals and show exactly how much you and your children would be paying in taxes if they were enacted into law. That’s why people were so eager to vote for Obama – they were practically whipping their credit cards out and looking for a place on the IRS web site where they could pay their children’s 70% income tax rates in advance.

We can only imagine a helpless Limbaugh dissolving in a confused jumble of “ums” and “ahs” as the dazzling Ali Velshi explains how gigantic increases in energy costs, forced unionization through unsupervised secret ballots, and a national debt bigger than the bond market of the entire Western world will bring this economy roaring back like a locomotive. Alas, we will have to leave it to our imaginations, for I doubt Rush will accept that grueling debate challenge, even if he remembers who Ali Velshi is.

When stagflation, or better, high inflation hits and your loaf of bread hits $10.00 what’s going to happen? It’s something we all we need to think about. And I’m not a fear monger.

God damn dude, I’ve been out all night and you’re still here just inserting freaking insults left and right. Is this all you have in life?

Question:

Do you think any damn thing you say here is witty or compelling enough to make even one of us budge from one of our core beliefs?

Question:

Do you think any damn thing you say is going to beguile us from our prospective on any issue we talk about here on Hot Air?

You and I both know the answer to both is no.

Question:

Why knowing this would you spend every waking hour here throwing your two cent around with no one wanting to buy a single damn thing you say? For reasonable people, it makes no sense at all. You don’t offer anything meaningful enough to laughingly call an exchange of ideas with someone you differ with politically. You’re the typical liberal. You don’t care about anything but yourself and your twisted outlook on life. You know that because you can’t change us, you do the next best thing that liberals think they’re good at. You come to Hot Air and think you’re somehow tormenting us with your asinine pearls of wisdom and lame quips. The truth is you accomplish nothing here but make us all more resolute in our beliefs and determined in our task of reorganizing and shoving your ascorbic words down your vile evil throats when we kick your asses and take this country back.

You accomplish nothing. You’re just pathetic. Or maybe pitiful. Maybe we could put that up to a vote, pathetic or pitiful.

Doctor Zero on March 4, 2009 at 11:25 PM

Actually, Limbaugh put Velshi away fairly easily. No debate is necessary.

Velshi: “This is not the economy that Ronald Reagan ever saw or anybody with the last name Bush ever saw, or Clinton. We have not seen anything like this in our lifetime.”

Limbaugh: “Mr. Velshi, you are incompetent. You are a disservice to your business, except you fit right in at CNN. Disinformation, character assaults. This economy is nowhere near as bad as it was in 1982. …

The GDP number shows that the fourth quarter was down 3.8%, right? Now, for the longest time, we’ve been hearing that we’re in “the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.” The Great Depression was 1930s. So that’s 70 years ago. Now all of a sudden, Obama said this morning that the economy in the fourth quarter GDP number was as bad as it’s been in three decades. Now, he said that to confuse his own voters. He shoulda said 30 years. Wait a minute! Thirty years and 70 years is a big difference.

Do you know what the GDP, you know what happened to it in 1982? That was Ronald Reagan’s second year in office. The GDP for 1982 was minus six-point-something percent, almost twice what the fourth quarter was in 2008. Not only is this economy right now nowhere near as bad as the Great Depression, it’s nowhere near as bad as the recession of 1982 when we were coming out of Obama One, also known as Jimmy Carter.”

Debate over.

It was for me and my Family. I’ve worked everywhere and in high profile jobs. Ca, Vegas, Metro NY and I’m back to my family’s roots in Ala and making not a FANTASTIC living but an honest one, and have enough land to self survive and have a very affordable mortgage. Never overspent or lived beyond my means but don’t really blame those who did. It’s a human effort. We have to forgive those who blew it, rescue them if we can but demand from everyone accountability. I expect nothing less from myself, and I expect nothing less from my neighbor. And guess what? We don’t need the government. My guess is, your neighbor would help with more immediate and sustainable help, albeit, loan, refinance, food, charity, jobs and love than our current Administration will ever offer.

When Barack Obama met with TV anchors at a White House lunch last week, he assured them he likes being president. “And it turns out I’m very good at it,” he added. Well, not exactly. What Obama is actually very good at is campaigning. He did it for two years as a presidential candidate, and it’s pretty much what he’s been doing in the six weeks since he was sworn in.

I wonder if the Rush obsession has anything to do with the “public interest doctrine” (formerly the fairness doctrine)?

If they can equate Rush with the GOP, then wouldn’t it be easier to censor Rush without it looking like censorship? “It is not in the public interest for you to give the de-facto leader of the GOP so much airtime without giving the Democrats equal time. Therefore we are going to deny your request for license renewal unless you give Dems equal time.”

Just a thought.

I agree, but the goal isn’t to get more liberal talk shows on. The goal is to force the station to choose between losing money on a liberal talk show or switching formats and giving up Rush altogether. In other words, the point is to get Rush off the air.

Daggett on March 5, 2009 at 12:24 AM

…that’s absolutely preposterous. How on earth do you suggest that Obama intends to “break” Limbaugh? Do you think Obama wants to drive Rush to commit suicide? That he will force him into retirement via disagreement? It really doesnt make any sense.

orange on March 4, 2009 at 5:48 PM

Very simple. Obama plans to overwhelm Rush with such an amazing amount of bullshit and governmental pressure that Rush simply stops laughing at Obama because Obama is truly, truly evil and engaging him even for the purposes of mockery is fruitless. Obama “wins” if Rush becomes bored of charring his hide and moves on to someone or something else, or is forced to retire entirely due to government coercion.

To realize the goal of finally “shutting Rush up,” expect the Fairness Doctrine, local content rules, and every other manner of onerous restriction and DOJ sponsored lawsuit imaginable. Obama would sooner fund a government campaign against Rush Limbaugh than he would actually attempt to address the economy.

In fact, he’s already doing just such a thing.

Read this article and there should be no doubt that liberalism is a mental illness and I’m not trying to be funny or sarcastic. These people listen to the hate spewed by everyone from their leaders pelosi, reid, schumer etal right down to the angry nuts at kos and with code pink and they think that is reasonable discourse and “speaking power to truth”. The entire spectrum of public liberalism is based on nastiness, lies and confrontation. Rhetoric instead of reality and facts. From ex-presidents down to the losers hanging out in coffee shops fantasizing they are intellectuals. Yet they can only list a handful of conservative media commentators who have a different point of view and make alot of money because alot of people agree with that point of view. I feel like I am in a Charlton Heston movie from the 60’s, the there is some kind of virus sweeping the planet and turning everyone into insane zombies and I’m one of the few immune.
