Hope and Change: The Operation Rushbo Distraction

posted at 12:30 pm on March 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If the first six weeks of the Barack Obama administration can be summed up in one sentence, it would be this: Obama fiddled with Rush Limbaugh while Wall Street burnedPolitico reports that the demonization of Rush Limbaugh comes as a deliberate strategy by Obama and the Democrats, who hoodwinked people into believing that a Chicago Machine pol really wanted to change the partisan nature of politics.  Starting in October, Obama relied on an old hand in attack politics to devise this strategy — and rolled it out even in the middle of an economic meltdown:

Top Democrats believe they have struck political gold by depicting Rush Limbaugh as the new face of the Republican Party, a full-scale effort first hatched by some of the most familiar names in politics and now being guided in part from inside the White House.

The strategy took shape after Democratic strategists Stanley Greenberg and James Carville included Limbaugh’s name in an October poll and learned their longtime tormentor was deeply unpopular with many Americans, especially younger voters. Then the conservative talk-radio host emerged as an unapologetic critic of Barack Obama shortly before his inauguration, when even many Republicans were showering him with praise.

Soon it clicked: Democrats realized they could roll out a new GOP bogeyman for the post-Bush era by turning to an old one in Limbaugh, a polarizing figure since he rose to prominence in the 1990s.

Read all of Jonathan Martin’s report, which makes clear that Carville and Paul Begala coordinated this effort with Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel on their morning conference calls.  Clearly, Obama wants to use his media contacts to play rough with critics through coordinated personal-attack campaigns.  Martin neglects to mention, though, that Obama himself started off this attack by telling Republicans that they can’t listen to Limbaugh any longer if they want to have access to Democratic-controlled agendas on the Hill.

So far, Obama’s attack machine — and there’s no other term for it — has mostly succeeded.  While the markets have lost 18% of their value in the six weeks of his leadership, all Democrats can talk about is Rush.  Newspapers and media have followed suit, and so have the blogs.  Usually excellent sites like The Moderate Voice and Political Machine have turned themselves into almost nothing but anti-Limbaugh sites, where Jazz Shaw’s light satire of the trend gets completely subsumed in the overwhelming focus on someone who has no direct power on policy or enforcement.  Instead of focusing attention on the real policy leaders in Washington — all Democrats — whose every move has received a resounding vote of no confidence from investors, they have allowed themselves to get distracted by a deliberate strategy of misdirection originating in the highest levels of the White House.

It’s reminiscent of Nixon’s enemies list, and it comes from the supposed messiah of Hope and Change.

Rush Limbaugh provides commentary, criticism, analysis, and entertainment, not political leadership, as Rush himself would attest.  He has an audience of 20 million people, which makes attacks on him by people like Michael Steele and other Republicans rather stupid.  Instead of dividing the Right, they would do better to act as Bobby Jindal did and find ways to unite the Right.  But with Republicans out of power, this is mere sideshow.  It’s a circus provided by Democrats to cover up their economic incompetence and massively ineffective spending programs.  It’s also a harbinger of things to come as this administration fumbles one issue after another, as they will only need to expand the personal attacks against critics rather than respond to the criticism itself.

Operation Rushbo only succeeds if people swallow it.

Update (AP): Boehner called it a “distraction” today too but I think that misses the point. Economic ruin will be with us long after this dust-up with Rush has blown away, which is to say, in the long run this won’t distract anyone from anything. What the Democrats are really trying to do is rebrand the GOP. They’re keenly attuned to that sort of thing, as we were reminded again just yesterday. I also wouldn’t call what they’re doing to Rush an “attack.” It’s more like promotion, albeit promotion for their own ends. In fact, if there’s anyone who benefits unambiguously from all this, it’s Rush himself. The Democrats might miscalculate in overestimating his supposed unpopularity, and the GOP leadership will go on squirming at having to defend or reject the idea of wanting Obama to fail, but all Limbaugh has to worry about is an expanding audience. His show has never seemed so vital as it does right now, which is precisely why lefties like Peter Daou are starting to worry.

Update (Ed): We’re going to agree to disagree.  I think this article makes the case quite clear that this is an attack policy devised by experienced hands from the Clinton administration at attack politics.  Whether that “rebrands” the GOP is probably secondary; as Carville himself once famously noted, “Your opponent can’t hit back when you have your fist in his face.”  So much for changing the tone in Washington.

Do you have an explanation then, why Obama and his minions are focused on Rush while telling people to pay no attention to that nasty old stock market? I agree, maybe he doesn’t want to break Rush, he wants the focus on mean old Rush instead of the greatest wealth destruction by an American President evah.

FWIW, I want Odrama’s agenda to fail too. Because Odrama’s Agenda = Bad for the Republic. So there! [/3rd grader]

Fact is, Odrama is making himself look like the most light-minded and thin-skinned POTUS ever by taking pot-shots at a radio personality, while everyday Americans watch their life savings go up in smoke every time Odrama announces a new plaaaan to tax, borrow, print and spend us all into the poor house.

If you don’t think people (especially the new listeners Odrama is creating) will remember the things Rush is saying today about the inevitable epic failures of Odrama’s insane agenda, and that it won’t benefit the conservatives when that day arrives, then you are as delusional and short-sighted as your short panted, immature petty tyrant president.

The problem is that Obama got the GOP talking about Rush rather than about fixing the GOP.

The other problem is we have a GOP Chairman that walked with eyes wide open into that trap. Steele is more caught up in being a celebrity than a leader.

It’s abit freakish if you ask me…which I’m sure you wouldn’t.

Somehow you’re trying to make it out to be Obama’s fault that the Rushmeister’s got his feathers ruffled.

The prime went from around 9% in 2000 to 0.5% in 2008….Bush and Greenspan colluded to depress federal interest rates to perpetuate the housing bubble and keep wallstreet afloat on a sea of sketchy mortgage-backed instruments.
You think people that are watching their IRAs turn into smoke don’t know this?
Do you think people that are hoping Obamas mortage modifications will arrive on time to save their house from foreclosure want to hear Rush hoping Obama will fail?
Get a clue.

He is a petty fool who ignores the big problems. No, I take that back, he’s not ignoring the big problems–he’s causing them.

This is a deliberate ploy on the part of Bambi and his goon squad to divert people from the mess he’s making of the economy with Porkulus and the Black Hole Budget and Rush horror of horrors has the nerve to dare to call him out.

Actually, O’bama started attacking Rush in May of 2008, if not before that.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/23/obama-rush-limbaugh-lou-d_n_103315.html

At a fundraiser in Florida Thursday night, Barack Obama accused anti-immigrant crusaders Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh of “ginning things up” to such an extent that there was a rise in hate crimes against Hispanics last year.

“A certain segment has basically been feeding a kind of xenophobia. There’s a reason why hate crimes against Hispanic people doubled last year,” Obama said. “If you have people like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh ginning things up, it’s not surprising that would happen.”

And later in 2008, O’bama invoked Rush in his Spanish language ads.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2008/09/17/obama_invokes_rush_limbaugh_in.html

And let’s not forget how Team O’bama blamed Rush for their loss in the Indiana Primary

I think Jindal and Sanford handled questions about Rush well, but they should not have had to. The whole thing is ridiculous. I don’t think Steele was really attacking Limbaugh, criticism is not an attack..but he would have been better off handling it like Jindal and just refusing to get into a debate. It was clumsy on his part, but then again the Democrats did their best to back him in a corner.

I keep thinking that this will turn on Obama sooner or later. I don’t see how it can hurt Limbaugh. Publicity is publicity.

But it is demeaning to the office of the Presidency for Obama to be taking on Limbaugh like this. It reminds me of the vast right wing conspiracy stuff we used to hear from Hillary when her husband was in trouble.

BUT IT IS DEMEANING TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY TO BE TAKING ON LIMBAUGH LIKE THIS.

That is the point Rush is trying to make, and the more Rush makes a point of Obama’s dereliction of duty as President regarding the economy, the more he hopes the American people wake up and realize Obama is not doing the job he was hired by the voters to do. Rush knows what he is doing and has boxed Obama into a corner.

If Obama debates Rush he demeans the office; if he doesn’t he shows that he is weak and a coward for calling someone out and then not backing up his play. Either way Rush wins and more important the American people win.

Politico reports that the demonization of Rush Limbaugh comes as a deliberate strategy by Obama and the Democrats, who hoodwinked people into believing that a Chicago Machine pol really wanted to change the partisan nature of politics. Starting in October, Obama relied on an old hand in attack politics to devise this strategy — and rolled it out even in the middle of an economic meltdown

If I were to construct a President I would furnish him with some way and qualities and characteristics which the present one lacks. He would not stoop to ask for any man’s compliments, praises, flatteries; and he would be far above exacting them. I would have him as self-respecting as the better sort of man in these regards.

He would not be a merchant, a trader. He would not buy these things. He would not sell, or offer to sell, material benefits for the product called adulation. I would have him as dignified as the better sort of man in this regard.

He would value no respect but the respect born of his doing well by the Nation; not that born of payoffs contracted for. No fawning adulation would be required or desired or expected of another man.

In his White House there would be no enemies list.

He would not be a jealous President — a trait so small that even ordinary men despise it in each other.

He would not boast.

He would keep private his admirations of himself; He would regard self-praise as unbecoming the dignity of his position.

He would not have the spirit of vengeance in his heart. Then it would not issue from his lips.

He would spend some of the remainder of his presidency in trying to forgive himself for making the country worse off when he could have made the country better off with the same effort and he would spend the rest of his life after his presidency living with his half brother and working as a Peace Corp volunteer in Kenya.

Diversion and it’s working. We all should hopey hope Mr. Limbaugh has not only the brains to recognize it but the strategy to put the focus back on the real issues. Too many to list.

Amazing, we have to rely on Rush to open the door to truth. Where are you Senators? Cowering in a corner waiting for Rush to expose it when you’re a stones throw away AND RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR COUNTRY? Better start mouthing and making it public or you’re out next election. This shit has got to stop.

seesalrun on March 4, 2009 at 7:52 PM

Rush wouldn’t WANT to be head of the GOP. Why take the pay cut?

Obama’s a fool. He is devaluing his position as President of the United States to pick a fight with a radio talk show host. His thin-skinned pettiness is showing. It’s downright Nixonian.

think Thom Jefferson in particular would be appalled at the Socon agenda. strangelet on March 4, 2009 at 7:07 PM

Your knowledge of history and Mr. Jefferson is abysmal. You have no notion as to Jefferson’s values or beliefs–much less the other Founding Fathers.

Jefferson believed in the following:

1) Limited government–as a strong believer in state rights and state sovereignty, the one thing Jefferson feared above all else was a strong central government seeing it as an open invitation to tyranny. He would take one look at Bambi and his policies and immediately curse him as a monarchical despot even wickeder that George III.

2) Jefferson hated large cities and was opposed to industrialization: Jefferson believed strongly in the independent farmer and disliked strongly speculators and believed that government had no business involving itself in business. Even though he hated industrialists and speculators, he felt that if someone wanted to engage in those activities they had the right to do so (that whole pursuit of happiness thing you libbies fail to truly understand), but that they shouldn’t rely on government assistance. These bailouts and Bambi’s Porkulus would have had him up in arms.

3) Jefferson would have bitterly opposed even the thought of nationalizing the banks just as he opposed Hamilton’s Bank of the United States.

4) Jefferson would have been aghast at Bambi and this Congress’s tax policies

5) Jefferson would have abhorred Bambi and this Congress’s efforts at social spending and social engineering arguing that government had no business in such matters.

6) Jefferson was also a strict constructionist where the Constitution was concerned and would have been aghast at the extent of judicial activism supported by you libbies and Bambi.

In conclusion, Jefferson would have viewed Bambi as being, at best, a rogue and a scoundrel; and at worst, as a tyrant.

Come back when you learn some American history!

never mind your family and friends; tell me, why is obama afraid of Winston Churchill’s bust ??

runner on March 4, 2009 at 7:13 PM

Baldi offered a provocative answer on another thread. She said Obama’s snub of Gordon Brown is to avenge Britain’s colonial control over Kenya. This can explain why the bust was returned as well. If true, more evidence imo to support the notion that Obama is mentally disturbed, and is a destroyer seeking vengeance.

JiangxiDad on March 4, 2009 at 8:27 PM

I just spent the better part of an hour reading this post; Ed’s take, Allah’s take, and all of the comments.

When we get this level of trolls sent to a single thread, you know a nerve has been struck. The MSM will continue to work hand in hand with Obama & Begala to perpetrate this assault on a private citizen. I remember when then President Clinton used the IRS to attack those who became a threat to him. Obama loaded up the WH with former Clinton thugs, as these people ran a very successful cover-up program for President Clinton and the first lady.

Notice how the little fact that Clinton used federal government organizations to attack private citizens was never an issue worth covering by the MSM. Now we have another Democrat President working hand in hand with the media to attack a private citizen.

Obama has surrounded himself with thugs and criminals. He has loaded up the WH with absolute evil people. The MSM provides cover for him and his thugs. I can’t help but to wonder what other missions the MSM provides for this WH. I can only hope and pray that the American people aren’t as dumb as Obama is counting on.

My family is also getting trashed financially; my parents, by brothers, my daughter and her husband… We all have watched as our investments have been cut in half by Obama in just a few weeks. I’m 55 years old, and have worked full time for the past 37 years. I’m sick to my stomach that my government is so freakin corrupt and careless that they have this sort of an agenda against it’s citizens. I’m fighting hatred big time. I have thoughts that I could never let come out of my mouth.

My hope rests with the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and others including Ed Morrisey. My government wants to take everything from me, the media is a working part of this plan, and my party is dazed and confused and void of leaders who will stand up for my family.

Good Gawd,do Liberals ever have a original idea!!!!!!!!!!

canopfor on March 4, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Nope they’re the most derivative people in the world, never an original thought. Most derived from Marx, Stalin, Gramsci, and an occasional lunatic insight from Andy Kaufman.

The excerpt below is copied from Peter Daou’s column at
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-daou/why-on-earth-are
-democrat_b_171321.html

The very fact that Obama won was enough (at least temporarily) to marginalize the hate-mongers like Limbaugh and Hannity. Maybe it was just me, but for a moment in November I felt that Limbaugh and Coulter and their ilk were suddenly passe, that the very fact of Obama’s presidency would cement the slow and steady work that Media Matters, MoveOn, CAP and the netroots did to undermine them, that in Obama moving past them, he automatically weakened them.

Instead, Limbaugh is now more powerful than ever. And I don’t see how that’s a good thing politically. It doesn’t matter that some Republicans don’t like him, it’s that everything he represents and all his imitators have needlessly been given new life – by us!

The idea that making him more powerful in the hopes that it somehow illustrates the weakness of GOP ideas is too Rube Golbergy for me. Why not just conceive and implement smart, good, Dem policy, use Bush as a constant reminder of Republican failures, and let the results speak for themselves?

Daou also talks about election night when he was so proud that Obama had been elected, I expected to read something about chills up his leg.

Peter must be so proud of himself. Talk about useful idiots!

Brilliant analysis as usual, Keemo. I just never knew that Rahm, Carville, Forehead and Greenberg had so many kids and relatives. All with nothing to do in the middle of the day! All Bush’s fault, no doubt.

stragelet and getalife are children–they recite their talking points, fling their poo–rinse, lather, repeat on the next thread. Generally it’s not worth wasting time on them. stragelet just torqued me off because I got torqued off at his obvious ignorance regarding Mr. Jefferson. Now, having said that, Mr. Jefferson would not have wanted any sort of legislation regarding issues such as marriage or abortion at the federal level–regardless of the type of legislation–again saying that it gave the federal government too much power–that those issues were matters for the states to handle.

Death is more poised in his arguments and he’s also very good at trying to deflect an argument into a different direction–you have to be careful of his traps. He likes to set up strawmen and he’ll try to flood you with links to sources that are, for the most part, agenda driven. If you get into an argument with him, don’t let him distract you or get you off on a tangent. Keep him on the subject and hit him with solid points and don’t let up.

Levin v. Biden has comedic potential.

Beck v. Pelosi would match estrogen levels.

This is a nice exercise in fantasy. Put it on PPV and have the proceeds go to paying down the debt.
