Hope and Change: The Operation Rushbo Distraction

posted at 12:30 pm on March 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If the first six weeks of the Barack Obama administration can be summed up in one sentence, it would be this: Obama fiddled with Rush Limbaugh while Wall Street burnedPolitico reports that the demonization of Rush Limbaugh comes as a deliberate strategy by Obama and the Democrats, who hoodwinked people into believing that a Chicago Machine pol really wanted to change the partisan nature of politics.  Starting in October, Obama relied on an old hand in attack politics to devise this strategy — and rolled it out even in the middle of an economic meltdown:

Top Democrats believe they have struck political gold by depicting Rush Limbaugh as the new face of the Republican Party, a full-scale effort first hatched by some of the most familiar names in politics and now being guided in part from inside the White House.

The strategy took shape after Democratic strategists Stanley Greenberg and James Carville included Limbaugh’s name in an October poll and learned their longtime tormentor was deeply unpopular with many Americans, especially younger voters. Then the conservative talk-radio host emerged as an unapologetic critic of Barack Obama shortly before his inauguration, when even many Republicans were showering him with praise.

Soon it clicked: Democrats realized they could roll out a new GOP bogeyman for the post-Bush era by turning to an old one in Limbaugh, a polarizing figure since he rose to prominence in the 1990s.

Read all of Jonathan Martin’s report, which makes clear that Carville and Paul Begala coordinated this effort with Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel on their morning conference calls.  Clearly, Obama wants to use his media contacts to play rough with critics through coordinated personal-attack campaigns.  Martin neglects to mention, though, that Obama himself started off this attack by telling Republicans that they can’t listen to Limbaugh any longer if they want to have access to Democratic-controlled agendas on the Hill.

So far, Obama’s attack machine — and there’s no other term for it — has mostly succeeded.  While the markets have lost 18% of their value in the six weeks of his leadership, all Democrats can talk about is Rush.  Newspapers and media have followed suit, and so have the blogs.  Usually excellent sites like The Moderate Voice and Political Machine have turned themselves into almost nothing but anti-Limbaugh sites, where Jazz Shaw’s light satire of the trend gets completely subsumed in the overwhelming focus on someone who has no direct power on policy or enforcement.  Instead of focusing attention on the real policy leaders in Washington — all Democrats — whose every move has received a resounding vote of no confidence from investors, they have allowed themselves to get distracted by a deliberate strategy of misdirection originating in the highest levels of the White House.

It’s reminiscent of Nixon’s enemies list, and it comes from the supposed messiah of Hope and Change.

Rush Limbaugh provides commentary, criticism, analysis, and entertainment, not political leadership, as Rush himself would attest.  He has an audience of 20 million people, which makes attacks on him by people like Michael Steele and other Republicans rather stupid.  Instead of dividing the Right, they would do better to act as Bobby Jindal did and find ways to unite the Right.  But with Republicans out of power, this is mere sideshow.  It’s a circus provided by Democrats to cover up their economic incompetence and massively ineffective spending programs.  It’s also a harbinger of things to come as this administration fumbles one issue after another, as they will only need to expand the personal attacks against critics rather than respond to the criticism itself.

Operation Rushbo only succeeds if people swallow it.

Update (AP): Boehner called it a “distraction” today too but I think that misses the point. Economic ruin will be with us long after this dust-up with Rush has blown away, which is to say, in the long run this won’t distract anyone from anything. What the Democrats are really trying to do is rebrand the GOP. They’re keenly attuned to that sort of thing, as we were reminded again just yesterday. I also wouldn’t call what they’re doing to Rush an “attack.” It’s more like promotion, albeit promotion for their own ends. In fact, if there’s anyone who benefits unambiguously from all this, it’s Rush himself. The Democrats might miscalculate in overestimating his supposed unpopularity, and the GOP leadership will go on squirming at having to defend or reject the idea of wanting Obama to fail, but all Limbaugh has to worry about is an expanding audience. His show has never seemed so vital as it does right now, which is precisely why lefties like Peter Daou are starting to worry.

Update (Ed): We’re going to agree to disagree.  I think this article makes the case quite clear that this is an attack policy devised by experienced hands from the Clinton administration at attack politics.  Whether that “rebrands” the GOP is probably secondary; as Carville himself once famously noted, “Your opponent can’t hit back when you have your fist in his face.”  So much for changing the tone in Washington.

Rush needs to back off the “hopes he fails” quote. If my neighbor thinks he can make it rain by setting his backyard on fire, do I hope he fails? My response would be it’s an unfair question; “hope” really doesn’t enter into it, because what he’s doing makes no sense, and will have unfortunate consequences for the rest of the neighborhood. If I say, however, that, yeah, I hope he fails, I could be construed as accusing him of really intending to burn down the neighborhood, which is, to coin a phrase, incendiary rhetoric.

You’re wrong any need to ‘back off’, and your analogy is inept. The only thing Rush needs to do is pound away at wanting POLICIES to fail, and he’s doing that.

Obama is the one who ‘rolled the dice’: instead of concentrating on the banking crisis ( especially the ‘credit crunch’ ), he and the DemoSheviks rammed through a ridiculously overblown spending bill which not only threatens to ruin our entire financial system but attempts to transform our economic system from govt-regulated capitalism to already-failed socialism.

Obama moved; he needs to be checked; to stop him we need to proclaim what he’s done and why it’s harmful. If anyone is setting anything on fire, it’s the immature ignorant clown who got himself elected POTUS by lying about EVERYTHING

They asked me to explain what was going on because they work all the time and don’t see the news. I told them they were lucky then, because they wouldn’t hear the truth. When I explained what was going on one of them cried and said “we came to America to be free and be successful, this is communism that you explain”. That says it all. They are going to start listening to Rush and have it on in their shop. My cleaners is now playing Rush’s show. People are stitting in their cars at lunch time listening to Rush. But make no mistake about it. Emanuel is the leader of all of this. Carville and Begala are just trying to ride my fame into their fortune and become relevant again. Begala and Carville, don’t confuse them with the power brokers that are managing this. It all Emanuel. Begala and Carville are second-rate talking heads on CNN. CNN has no audience. Rahm Emanuel is the power behind the throne — and don’t let his effeminate nature and his ballerina past mislead you on this. He may look effeminate (he was a ballerina at one time) but he has the feral instincts of a female rat defending its young. Well, take a look. When Emanuel and Carville and Begala are together (and I’ve seen pictures) it looks like a reunion of the Village People. (singing) Y! M! C! A! They are really the official greeters in Roswell, New Mexico, in Area 51 where Carville was born.

Nope, it’s designed to keep the public’s eye off the tanking economy while the humongous Omnibus bill gets rammed through Congress…

This nonsense with Rush isn’t taking anyone’s eye off anything. To believe that it is, you have to explain how (a) they’re going to stretch this out for the next two or three years,

If they get this omnibus bill passed, its effect on the economy will be locked in for the next 10 years and they won’t have to worry about distraction after it’s passed.
We’ll be committed to $3-9 trillion taxes, programs, and deficits by then and it will be a “done deal.”

and (b) why on earth anyone would care more about what’s happening to Rush Limbaugh than to their 401k. It’s a momentary media diversion but they’ll get tired of it soon enough.

Allahpundit on March 4, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Rush is leading the fight by saying that we don’t have to accept the crumbs that Obama is offering us and that he should be fought so that his policies fail–he offers an alternative, whereas the Obama folks need Americans to believe that there is no alternative.
Of course, that kind of opposition that Rush presents must be silenced.
Same goes for Cramer and Santelli.

Allahpundit, I think the main, hidden problem we have with elevating Limbaugh to some kind of all-powerful shadow-opposition is that doing so is basically to cover Obama’s complete and total destruction of the economy, and every other malevolent action he has made or intends to make.

Obama’s real problem with Rush is that Rush is the kind of man you don’t take on unless you know you can win. That is why Obama needs him to become the official opposition, because if Obama can finally “break” Rush Limbaugh, he will be lauded as a hero and savior of the left forever. His statue will go up with Marx, Lenin, and Stalin as the enshrinement of liberal ideals.

In short, Obama is a narcissist at his core. His legacy will be complete even if the economy tanks, even if America fails, all if he defeats Rush Limbaugh. That is what is scary about this man.

Yes to freedom of speech, a free and unbiased press/media, and the people’s right to dissent and protest against the government!

No to government censorship of free speech/criticism of policies, intimidation of private citizens and elected officials, and a White House Enemies List!

Once again Sarah called it right regarding Obama and his henchmen (i.e, the Dems and the Media). During the 2008 campaign, Sarah said the following in an interview with Chris Plante on WMAL-AM:

“If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations,” Palin told host Chris Plante, “then I don’t know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media.”

Of course, Sarah was widely mocked and criticized in the Media and by pundits (just like when Sarah called Obama socialist). In hindsight, guess Sarah may have been smarter than a 5th grader (and most of the MSM and pundits) after all!

Ain’t seen nothin’ yet I think. This debate offer will have trolls steaming in their socks. Just love it, in fact I can’t stop smiling when I think of it. Whether o does or does not debate Rush, either way o(or his pets) has a lot of repair to do.

That’s funny- My hairdresser had Rush on on Monday too. I was surprised because it’s a hippie place and they usually have this new agey stuff on.

anniekc on March 4, 2009 at 5:13 PM

Bbama is intentionally trying to crush the stock market. He wants to break the USA down so he can build it up the way he wants it.

He doesn’t give a $hit about my savings, all he cares about is the non-white victim classes and the ACORN types.

He wants to punish achievers. It’s pretty obvious.

saiga on March 4, 2009 at 5:13 PM

I would agree, except I don’t think he is that smart…I just think he wants the have not’s to have, and he sees this as an opportunity to give “opportunity” to those he feels has never had a chance. Not realizing they have all had a chance, they just past it up.
Add to that his total confusion, and inexperience, and you get the classic kid thrown in the deep end of the pool, and watching him try to get to the edge without drowning.

right2bright on March 4, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Obama fiddled with Rush Limbaugh while Wall Street burned.

And while Obama fiddled, Rush did all he could to draw attention to the smoke and flames, but everyone was too busy praising the fiddler to notice the 3rd degree burns on their investments.

Disturb the Universe on March 4, 2009 at 5:21 PM

Look, either way Rush wins. If o does debate, not only will he lose, he will be essentially saying a talk show host is his equal and worth being taken into account.. If he doesn’t debate Rush he will be essentially saying that he lied when he inferrred that Rush was the leader of the GOP and he was playing a game. Either way, o loses. Sheesh, maybe Rush is right about the one hand tied behind his back. LOL

jeanie on March 4, 2009 at 5:22 PM

Seriously…where and how does this uhbuhma nightmare end? When does the MSM turn? When do his ratings plumett? Or is it not ’til 15% unemployment gets here???

I want his screen name on the lefty sites so I can read his comments. He’s not sure he wants to make HA his home, and I want to know all about him to welcome him correctly.

That’s a bit creepy, don’t you think? Are you purposely trying to drive me away from this site? If so, why?

orange on March 4, 2009 at 5:37 PM

Obama started it! [/3rd-grader] Sorry you missed it:

Clearly, Obama wants to use his media contacts to play rough with critics through coordinated personal-attack campaigns. Martin neglects to mention, though, that Obama himself started off this attack by telling Republicans that they can’t listen to Limbaugh any longer if they want to have access to Democratic-controlled agendas on the Hill.
suzyk on March 4, 2009 at 3:26 PM
Rush’s ratings are going to skyrocket and many will be converted. The Dem fascists will find themselves hoisted by their own petard.

Rae on March 4, 2009 at 3:32 PM

As I pointed out earlier in the thread, Limbaugh made his “failure” related comments about Obama prior to January 24.

orange on March 4, 2009 at 5:38 PM

Thanks for the link. Terrific quotes from Rush.

My point here is that these are really odious, empty, nasty people who are feasting on their own arrogance. They are power hungry. But, you know what? They’ve never had a serious debate over ideas. Their goal is to destroy opponents, which is what they’re trying to do now.

INC on March 4, 2009 at 3:36 PM

If you really believe this, then what is the point of coming to this blog? You already know every issue is going to play out: The Republicans are probably right and the Democrats are certainly wrong. So why not do something else with your time?

I get information about politics – including going to sites that lean a different direction than I do – because I am open-minded and wish to learn more about all sides of an issue.

There are people on both sides of the ideological divide that are willing to believe that their side is always right and the other side is composed of idiots and monsters. To me, it’s fairly clear that that isnt the case.

orange on March 4, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Here’s what Obama said, and true leaders would do, especially not lie and lower themselves into the gutter:

But I am deeply disappointed that the President himself is playing this game – not just because he is the President and this kind of nonsense should be beneath him. It’s also because he is the President in part because he promised he wouldn’t do this stuff! And yet, we’ve seen this kind of immature nonsense quite a bit from an administration that has only been in place for a month.
~ ~ Jay Cost

That does nothing to show how Obama started it.

orange on March 4, 2009 at 5:44 PM

Thanks for the repost, BKennedy, but…

Obama’s real problem with Rush is that Rush is the kind of man you don’t take on unless you know you can win. That is why Obama needs him to become the official opposition, because if Obama can finally “break” Rush Limbaugh, he will be lauded as a hero and savior of the left forever. His statue will go up with Marx, Lenin, and Stalin as the enshrinement of liberal ideals.

In short, Obama is a narcissist at his core. His legacy will be complete even if the economy tanks, even if America fails, all if he defeats Rush Limbaugh. That is what is scary about this man.

BKennedy on March 4, 2009 at 11:22 AM

…that’s absolutely preposterous. How on earth do you suggest that Obama intends to “break” Limbaugh? Do you think Obama wants to drive Rush to commit suicide? That he will force him into retirement via disagreement? It really doesnt make any sense.
