Gibbs: Squabbling with Rush may, perhaps, be “counterproductive”
posted at 3:40 pm on March 4, 2009 by Allahpundit
I can’t find a transcript of the presser so I don’t know if anyone asked the obvious follow-up: How can he claim it’s “counterproductive” when Politico’s reporting that they’ve had a deliberate strategy to provoke Limbaugh in place since last year? The whole point, supposedly, is that Rush-baiting is very productive indeed. Anyone? Tapper? Bueller?
As for why he’s suddenly climbing down, credit Drudge with a screaming banner about “enemies lists” and some grumbling in the media about pettiness and hypocrisy. Michael Scherer at Time:
If you believed what Obama said during the campaign, then Carville is dead wrong. Republicans in Congress are not the only losers. The American people also lose. At a time of unprecedented threats to the United States, a time of financial collapse, bank failures and record layoffs, at a time when the credit crisis has not been solved, and the stock market is in free fall, at a time of stagnating wars, rising terrorism in Pakistan and growing nuclear potential in Iran, the White House has done the easy thing. It has asked the American people to focus their attention not on solving the problems, but on a big-mouthed entertainer in Florida. This may be smart politics. But it is also the same petty strategy that John McCain employed during the presidential campaign, the one that our new president promised to rise above.
And Jay Cost at RCP:
I understand why Democrats in Congress, the media, and the DNC are doing this. Frankly, that doesn’t bother me at all. That’s the way political games are played, and GOP politicos have certainly done their fair share of this over the years to deserve all that they get. But I am deeply disappointed that the President himself is playing this game – not just because he is the President and this kind of nonsense should be beneath him. It’s also because he is the President in part because he promised he wouldn’t do this stuff! And yet, we’ve seen this kind of immature nonsense quite a bit from an administration that has only been in place for a month.
Per Cost, read this painful Dana Milbank piece to see what’s fallen through the cracks while they’ve been busy with Rush. “Immature” indeed.

What the heck is Michael Scherer talking about? Is he talking about McCain going after conservative people?
WashJeff on March 4, 2009 at 3:44 PM
They just make it up as they go. There is no such thing as the past.
This administration is like that guy with the neurological damage who can’t get anything into long-term memory. He wrote line after line after line in his journal, “I am NOW alive. I am conscious for the first time in my life!! I am here!!!” When his wife pointed his journal out to him and asked him who kept writing those lines on page after page, he said, “I don’t know”.
Well … he’s in the White House, now. And he’s really mad at America.

So the plan was to vilify Limbaugh unfairly, as long as nobody objected?
Is it possible the reason they’re backing down is because they are the dumbest mutherf*&*#* to ever serve in gov’t?
Is it possible that Obama himself is not only a flaming a**hole, but dumb as a stump?

Why is the White House attacking private citizens for their political views?

carbon_footprint on March 4, 2009 at 3:48 PM
Eventually, the incompetence that seems to be running rampant in this White House is going to come back to bite them. When people get their 401k statements and find themselves getting fired because their boss has to pay higher taxes and doesnt want to lose money, it wont be Rush Limbaugh they will be thinking about. This is short term stupidity that will allow the press a few laughs, but no real victory. The mid term elections are years away, dragging out Limbaugh as their straw man now is political idiocy, it doesnt net them anything. People are already beginning to rumble out there as you point out and its only a matter of time before the “hope and change” cloud lifts and people understand whats really going on. Limbaughs audience will grow and the Obama administration will finally be revealed as the joke that it is.

The Obama administration would rather fling attacks at political commentators than confront the economic crisis. In fact, the Prez encourages us to ignore Wall St.

I suspect being exposed as conspiring to destroy certain people has the WH backing off a bit. When you have the entire Democrat Party, the White House, the leftwing blogosphere and the media establishment piling on one guy, at some point it’s overkill and will backfire.
Besides, Rush is reveling in it.

Really is more indicative of the lack of stature of this president. Petty beyond belief.
So, did Lincoln do this?????????
Starlink on March 4, 2009 at 3:52 PM
So let’s get this all straight. Instead of doing their jobs by providing a military, upholding the constitution, protecting the citizens of the country and the constitution, the Obama Administration is childishly taking verbal potshots and plotting against a private entertainer?
Gee democrats, way to go. Not only are you screwing up the country by spending money we don’t have on useless crap, you’re not even professional enough to do your damn jobs.
That sure is a “change” from the last Adminstration that at least had the balls to be at work on time and do their job while on the taxpayer clock.
Middle of a recession and the democrats pull this shit. That’s not change, that’s more of the liberal same.

I think Obama is backing down since their marketing department cannot come up with a logo for this effort.
Obama has never had to deal with opposition his whole career until this election and office. Coupled with the lack of executive experience, It comes off as looking stupid. This is the inexperience we were worried about.
WashJeff on March 4, 2009 at 3:55 PM
The standoffishness with Brown may well be to insulate Obama in case the Tories crush his government in the next round of elections.
And Gibbs is a pitiful little creature. Whoever described him the other day as a hamster really nailed it.

You know, I’ve long since not been able to stomach viewing Obama, except in small clips where I just have to.
But within short order, this Gibbs guy is really giving Obama a run for his money on that score. It would be a toss-up now, actually, to decide which I like viewing less. I think Gibbs wins on the nauseating factor, at least.

True. Rush has been underestimated by the left, and this petty political reach by O’Teleprompter has been exposed and humiliated.
Rush is never portrayed this way, but he is an extremely deep thinker, a la Buckley. Besides, liberals are lost in any discourse on ideas.

Key West Reader on March 4, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Sorry I am just not getting all stiff over this latest stunt like some. Rush has challenged others to debates before, but it is always carries the caveat of in his studio only which gives the opposition an easy out. He knows this will prevent a real debate from ever happening which is exactly why he does it. He is doing this for himself and his business, not for the country.

Tapper had his own Q’s for Gibbs today.
As per usual he could not get any kind of an answer from Gibbs, when he was trying to pin Gibbs down on why the Administration talks about tightening belts when they won’t get the spending bill revised to take out the $8B in earmarks.

neuquenguy on March 4, 2009 at 4:00 PM
The only way Obama would dare to face Rush one-on-one would be in a stadium filled with Obama voters (i.e. people who call 911 because McDonalds is out of McNuggets) and surround himself with 15 back-up telemprompters, all running on indenpendent generators in case of power failure.
Even then, Rush would clean his clock.
Norwegian on March 4, 2009 at 4:01 PM

carbon_footprint on March 4, 2009 at 4:01 PM
The press conference was before the Politico story. Not that anyone would have asked that follow up anyway. The Democrats and Media will try to spin away and ignore their close cooperation. This is astroturfing you can believe in. Make it appear there’s a groundswell for denouncing Rush when it is a White House campaign to discredit him. Too bad the Republicans fall for it every time.

While I doubt any debate will ever occur. If Rush really wants this debate, and I do not see why he wouldn’t, I would say the studio demand is a good idea. We see the libs saying, “why in your studio? Why not on TV?” IF this message comes from the administration, and Rush agrees, the admin cannot back out of the debate.
With negioations, you NEVER make public items you are willing to concede. See Obama and missle defense as how not to do it.

Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals
RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. I also want to say that I hate how Gibbs leans in at the end of a sentence when he’s trying to make a (lame) point.
Shouldn’t a job requirement for White House Press Secretary be “good public speaking skills”? Charisma a big plus.
Tony Snow was amazing. Not only did he speak well, but he did it with candor and a sense of humor.
Scott McClellan was awful for the same reasons as Gibbs.
Oh well. What do I know? If I was president, I’d close down the press room and open up FDR’s old pool again and tell the lib reporters to piss off. It would create some controversy, but the time and money spent on useless press meetings could be spent on, you know, actually fixing things.
