WSJ poll: Obama approval rating at 60%, handling of economy at 56%
posted at 8:50 pm on March 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
The public will get tired of the spending eventually but they’re not there yet. 68 percent view The One very or somewhat positively, and while support for the stimulus has narrowed, it’s still 44/36 in favor. So far they’re willing to give him plenty of time to right the ship, too:

In both questions you’ve got more than 40 percent looking ahead two years or more. I wonder what another six months of disintegrating Dow and rising unemployment would do to those numbers. Would the timeline be further extended or would people get impatient? Note the trend below as an early warning that even as support for the stimulus and his handling of the economy remain positive, clouds are gathering:

On the other hand:

Looking at that, it’s hard to believe it’s still a center-right country. And looking at these, it’s even harder:

The “positive” numbers for the GOP there are the lowest yet, although “negatives” have been worse. (The difference is in the neutral category.) You’ll also be pleased to know that those agreeing with the statement that we need to spend more on defense have declined from 73/21 a few months after September 11th to … 42/49 now.
Silver lining: 53 percent now say the Iraq war has been very or somewhat successful, up 10 points from last year. So Bush may yet have a legacy even if we, er, never get elected again.

The main reason for these high approval numbers is ignorance tinged with stupidity. Democrats hear Obama and accept what he says no matter how disconnected it is from the truth. They refuse the truth.
They can’t handle the truth.
You try to discuss things with them and they simply dismiss efforts to put facts in their heads. Obama is fortunate to have such stupidity supporting him.

not true…plenty of houses were built in 1946 germany out of reshaped rubble….the problem is that granola munching moonbats through whacko enviro laws will preclude our recapitalizing growth from resource exploitation….

Just as the economy has still to work through the toxic assets before things get better, the public still has the bad taste of an unpopular Bush presidency (a president almost constitutionally incapable of mounting a defense of his own presidency). I think Obama benefits from this. But time is quickly running out for him. I’d say that by Memorial Day if things aren’t better, the public will be in the mood once again to dislike the president.

Not to worry. Yesterday Barry told us it was a good time to buy stocks.
Ummm, just what does a community organizer, an ideological socialist, who’s never held a real job (unless you count a few months of lawyering) or been around markets supposed to know about finance and investing? The sheer audacity of that little punk to presume to give people investment advice. Pure hubris.
Sure, we expect him to be somewhat optimistic about the future, but give us a break and lay off the investment advice.

Americans are by and large a very stupid people. This poll proves it once again.

There is no better example of the failure of domestic democratic policies than California.
democrats continue to blame everything on Bush and cry about talk show hosts like Rush to distract from the many promises that Obama is breaking, the massive corruption in the democratic party so early in his Presidency, and the stock market tanking every time he speaks about his “stimulus” policies:
State caught in avalanche of job losses – Los Angeles Times
(via the daily pundit)
We have already seen the plunge in the stock market since Obama was elected and starting pushing his “pay for play” rip off of the American people disguised as a “stimulus”,
There’s more:
These numbers don’t lie:
The scariest chart ever
http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2009/01/scariest-chart-ever.html
Economists from all corners are calling Obama’s economic policies a disaster waiting to happen.
It is not surprising that polls such as this one that is weighted so far to democrats shows these numbers just two months into his Presidency.
People are going to give him the benefit of the doubt and the democrats are winning the message blame game because just like on the Iraq war,Republicans on the hill will not confront democrats and expose their culpability.
The reality is though, that this blame game will only go so far because Obama was elected to change and fix the domestic and international problems we face.
The expectations are sky high and Americans have very short memories. It will be Obama’s face on the television everyday, not Bush’s or Limbaugh’s.
democrats have control of the House,Senate, and White House.
This economy will be their economy very soon in people’s eyes, especially passing trillions of dollars of “stimulus” and “bail outs” that are showing little to no results.
This Foreign Policy is theirs now also and we have heard nothing but “we will do things smarter” for years.
There are some serious problems abroad that will have an effect on all of us.Speeches and spin from their friends in the press will not solve Afghanistan,Pakistan,Iran,N. Korea, and Mexico’s problems (Putin is in the process of exposing Obama’s lack of experience in a big way):

How anyone with a modicum of sense, can approve of this current administration is beyond me. The One doubled the deficit in 30 days with his porkulus dream, turns around and insists he’ll cut the deficit in half over the next.. what… 10 years? Helllooooo, even IF people continue to be stupid enough to reelect this person, he’s only got 8 years. well, that is unless of course, we allow Chavez tactics and get dictator for life possibilities.
The One says he doesn’t pay any attention to the “ups and downs” of the market, doesn’t think we should worry. Has anyone else noticed that every time he opens his mouth, the market falls? Personally I wish he’d just zip it!!!
He has a high approval rating, when his cabinet is full of idiots, cheats, people he owes favors to and those who scramble to kiss @$$??
Just yesterday, we’re supposed to jump for joy, because the spendulous, porkulous bailout (oh, excuse me, “recovery package”) now has successfully (outside of government bloat) created 60 jobs?? Well I can breathe easier now.
Amen….
sorry for the rant (maybe I should tell you how I really feel! lol.) Every day when I read the news, my blood pressure sky rockets and I despair over the direction our country is headed, unless the conservatives rally and do something. Then we get polls like this that just exacerbate my BP numbers!!!
ladyhawke53 on March 4, 2009 at 8:17 AM
The Obamaloons still like him because the PRAVDA media does not report what is going on. But you can’t hide the 201k information from the voters — LOL.
tarpon on March 4, 2009 at 8:31 AM
Yeah, I agree that it’s the media keeping Barry’s numbers up. That, or we really are living in Bizzarro world where left is right, and up is down. (bobbing and gyrating?) The fact that Sleazball Emanuel has daily media calls with CNN, etal. to fix the days talking points is beyond corrupt; It’s unfortunate, (to say the least) that FOX and Rush, who actually ARE honest, are so thought to be “out of touch”. Although I do see the trend of people who might not love Rush’s style, are tuning in to see what he has to say and I’ve no doubt finding him more knowledgeable than the idiots at NBC, etc.
anniekc on March 4, 2009 at 8:41 AM
I’m not going to dispute the poll numbers, but I can’t honestly wrap my head around the notion that the economy could limp along like this for 2 years without Obama getting his hair mussed (to borrow Gen. Turgidson’s phrase) a little. The stock market in particular can’t continue on its current trajectory as a simple matter of mathematics. At some point people have got to examine whether what they’re seeing is lack of leadership. I can’t see Timmy Geithner staying at the grownups’ table through the summer if this keeps up.
I lay a lot of blame with Bush’s SecTreas, since TARP may actually have worked if they had not turned it into a slush fund and further trivialized it with the auto bailout talk. Obama similarly allowed the stimulus (which I supported most of) to be trivialized with all the agenda-related spending.
I think Obama’s poll numbers are going to be adversely affected when people get a chance (starting today) to determine whether who’s actually eligible for the mortgage relief programs. My guess is, a lot of folks won’t be who think they are, and of course the inevitable rewarding of bad actors will start being documented as the program rolls out in earnest too. If rockmom’s still in the housing industry I’d love to hear her take on what she’s seeing.
Furthermore, I happen to know from recent personal experience that the federal agencies don’t know how they’re going to either spend or account for the stimulus money they’ve received; most will not be able to program the money in a FFATA-compliant fashion; and while stickers and web sites “tracking” expenditures may satisfy Obama devotees there are harder reporting requirements these programs have to submit to (e.g. GPRA) or raise fundamental accountability questions.
Finally, I know that ARRA broke welfare reform, which was one of the significant sociopolitical developments driving the “government doing too much/too little” balance changing during and after the Clinton Administration. If people know the incentives for government assistance have returned to the old perverse ones, it undermines their confidence in all that nondiscretionary spending…
DrSteve on March 4, 2009 at 8:46 AM
One more finally — Obama is doing exactly squat for rural communities, economically. It’s a huge blind spot in his whole approach at the moment, and it’s a potential source of criticism for him in the future. Has anyone even seen Tom Vilsack since his confirmation hearing?
DrSteve on March 4, 2009 at 8:51 AM
The average citizen off the street does not know what the words DEFICIT or RECESSION even mean. I am being serious; we are talking about blatant stupidity and mountain high levels of blissful ignorance by the masses. Most who voted for Obama cannot name the v/p or the speaker, or the branches of government. And who gets these poll calls? I have never gotten one B/C I AM AT WORK.

Just because you don’t like the poll doesn’t mean the data is faulty. I would believe it since the track record of the WSJ is fairly good.
What people are missing is that Obama’s numbers are falling. Over the past couple of weeks he has lost around 4% each week. The longer her attacks the American system the further they will fall. Before to much longer he will be in the 40% range and maybe even 30% but I highly doubt that since he is perceived to be such a great guy.

I do believe the numbers. Well then, Americans should not complain when the country goes to pieces. In the same way, Jews who voted for the Magic Negro should not cry when the Iranian A-bomb is dropped on Israel.
This is such a ripe time for countries like China to weaken the US. They know the US must borrow like crazy to fuel the Negro’s grand socialistic agenda. They could balk at buying the T-bills which would send the market into a frenzy.

“Profit and earning ratios?” What are those, Obama? Most of us who own stock are familiar with price/earnings ratios — is that what you meant? Please tell me that you’re not as utterly clueless as you sound. No wonder the market has been tanking since you took office.
Can you imagine the MSM reaction if Sarah Palin had made a comment like Obama’s? It would have been headline stuff — yet more proof of her enormous ignorance and unfitness for office. But when the “brilliant” Obama exposes his lack of knowledge about a vital subject, the MSM ignores it.
AZCoyote on March 4, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Has anyone done a poll yet to see how many Obama voters are now regretting their vote? I’d like to see the percentages on that one. I know a lot of voters were misinformed, caught up in the emotion, or just weren’t paying attention to who they were voting for, but I can’t believe that we have that many dumb people in this country!
Susanboo on March 4, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Tearing people away from their faith in “Hope-n-Change” will not happen overnight… His aura as a smooth talker is well deserved, he lies with impunity. I have never before seen the blatant lies go unchallenged by anyone except Talk Radio and, to a small extent, Fox News.
The One has polls (lies) showing his approval ratings are still high, but the effects of his massive debt, his hate for businesses, his loathing of American success and his lack of ethics have yet to impact most Americans.
As The Messiah’s hatred of America shows more and more and our security in the world diminishes, his numbers hold… As he closes Gittmo and allows his AG to plea-bargain for horrific gang members lighter sentences, his numbers hold… As Terrorists once locked away now are in our US Courts with Constitutional Rights, his numbers hold… But trust me when I tell you, this too shall pass. American’s ARE waking up, they are slowly realizing that The One is not being an honest broker of “Change”, many moderates are openly questioning The Messiah, Blue Dogs are starting to bark and Conservatives in both the House and Senate are finding a voice, a spine, a set…
The wheels on Obama’s bus are slowly starting to wobble as they spin America deeper and deeper into recession and depression. His comments about the markets, success, welfare, Socialism, security, the military along with his constant lies ARE beginning to stick in the gullets of hard working, play by the rules, average “Joes” and younger voters. His poll numbers will drastically change as our economy continues to tank and the message of Conservatism spreads like wildfire across the fruited plains. Jindal, Cantor, Palin, Sanford, Rush, Mark and others along with Steele will soon begin seeing the tide turn.
Americans are NOT Socialists by nature, eventually we will rally, fight back and retake our Natrion away from the lazy, welfare driven, far left radicals of the Democratic Party. Moderates and Centrists’ will move towards the Republican party out of sheer desire to survive… Hit folks in their pockets and in their families’ lives and watch how long “Change and Hope” lasts. Don’t stop working, don’t stop calling the RNC and Congress, do NOT give up folks!
Mark Garnett on March 4, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Perhaps a lot of Americans remember which party was sounding the alarm during the campaign and which was saying the economy was strong and the recession was “mental” only. Few economists have said that the bottom of the real estate or lending crisis or job losses (which have been plummeting since early fall) would be any better before the end of 09 or even early 2010. To think that people will revolt by Memorial day or freak out at a bad stock month is to think that everyone expects this to be over in two months, and really, who seriously expects that? Obama has told the public that there is no quick fix, and I suspect of McCain were President, he would be saying the same thing. The public also realizes that Obama has been in office for six weeks and these problems have been in motion for nearly two years. I think he has until about this time next year or perhaps until Memorial Day next year before these scenarios that some are wishing for become a possibility. That’s a long time from now, but not so far from the 2010 elections.

Clinton at this time in 1993 higher approval ratings than Obama has today. Within 6 months, he had fallen 30+ points, and Time had a cover of Clinton with the title “The incredible shrinking president”. 10 months after that the GOP won control of Congress.
Of course, the economy then was far better than today, and Clinton reversed himself to being much more conservative, signing the Welfare Bill, etc.
No such luck for Obama. The economy will only get worse (MUCH worse), he will remain a leftist, and he won’t face a weak GOP candidate like Dole in 2012.
I predict Obama will hover around 25-30% Approval in 2012, if not sooner.

Rural communities?
Obama is going on ahead with these social agendas like providing rural people w/ hi speed internet access via fiberoptics.
Do I need this out in the stix?
Listen, I have dial up internet at home-25,000 kps.
I can’t really even use it anymore bcs our land lines are so old they hardly work to even make a phone call anymore.
It SUCKS.
But I CHOOSE to live out here without the city stuff you all have. I like it.
If I want internet, I’ll buy a satellite.
If Obama REALLY wanted to help rural communities, he’d stop TAXING everything so we could keep more of our OWN $$ to spend how WE WISH.
If the govt would also just enforce the laws they already have, then rural America would be in a lot better shape than it is now.
Badger40 on March 4, 2009 at 1:39 PM
BTW- I realize many in our rual communities, at least here in SW ND, WANT the govt to spend $$ on stuff that benefits us, the few.
I will admit I would mind having reasonably priced access to technology instead of having to pay through the nose bcs I live in the stix.
But them’s the breaks.
My brother in law lives out west of Camp Crook SD. When it rains-he can’t go ANYWHERE.
Does this mean the govt should build a road to his house? His property does abut next to forest service land, so I guess they should be paving everything out there.
Oh-but wait-isn’t most national forest land destined to be a ‘roadless area’?
The stupidity never ends.

Obama hires Julius Genachowski to coordinate the ACORNization of American communications. Genachowski’s focus on localization, manipulating local regulations to limit national broadcasts by conservatives, can be circumvented from succeeding its attempted strangle-hold on all opposition.
But maintaining freedom of speech will require conservative bloggers to do the very research in each of our own locals that Genachowski is hiring liberal locals to do. Research and learn the rules and immediately apply them to corner the local demand funding market on the government “bipartisan” localized media grants. PBS can’t have it all; in fact, Independent Lens could be sued for not fairly representing local populations’ concerns and productive conservative achievements amongst youth, the ably challenged, and the elderly. According to the rules, become the non-profit independent radio station broadcasters.

That’s a knee-jerk answer for why the public is falling in with the Prez and it ignores the culpability of the GOP and conservatives – as usual – to get in the business of educating and informing large numbers of people. Persuasion is the name of the game, not throwing our hands in the air and calling people stupid. We have not made the argument for capitalism and against socialism well enough. This country has experienced this drift toward socialism many times and it has always been education and information campaigns that have dragged it back from the abyss.
The public can’t be expected to make our arguments for us. If we expect them to do the heavy lifting for us, we will lose this country.

There is a disconnect between what people are feeling about Obama (majority approval) and what people think about the likelihood of success of the Obama spending (majority does not believe it will work). Obama rhetoric is relating to feelings, but the minds of people are not convinced. This cannot continue.

Time to hop on over to AmericanSolutions.com and become part of Newt Gingrich’s initiative. The Republican brand is in trouble, but Republican ideas are not.

Consensus is overrated, since most people are stupid!

Like yelling about Fannie and Freddie and trying to push legislation to fix them? Who was that? Hmmmmm.
The people who believe this also believe Obama will fill their gas tanks and pay their mortgages. Sorry guy, but your bedding with idiots.
No they don’t. If they did, they would realize this “crisis” began just exactly when they elected Democrats to run Congress. And Congress would get their just blame.
Maybe. But that’s enough time to do a hell of a lot of damage.
Let’s hear it for the next CONTRACT WITH AMERICA!!!!!!!

The American Idol President is a huge FAIL at this point…
Remember Rubin Stodder, he won American Idol, hasn’t become a “Star”…
Remember other “acts” the American people have voted for that have flopped, big time???
Americans, well the “moderates” at least, that have no spine, that hold a finger to the wind to see the direction to move, will be the first to bail on The Messiah because they have no convictions to start with… (Allah & others here at HotAir that want the big tent come to mind in this catagory) Look at Brooks, Buckley Jr and other “moderates” are already jumping off the rat infested ship of State. Heck, even the radical Chrissie Matthews, Mr Tingle, is worried that Obamby is a fool and tool… Buyers remorse?

1 Term Messiah
&
Return of Conservatism
Most Americans are sick and tired of Hope-n-Change, this poll is a lie… Many, many are waking to the facts that the Messiah is a total failure, a radical leftist, with designs on the destruction of historical American values, principals and way of life… People are seeing his contempt of The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, sucess, business and the individual freedoms of choice and self.
The tide IS turning… But The One is not going down without pushing his radical agenda as far and as fast as possible…
OUR DUTY, yes I said OUR DUTY as Americans is to stand in the breach, resist, fight back, hang on, never surrender and go on the offensive to educate as many as possible to the dangers this Administration intends to inflict…

As to Obummer’s investment advice, do you really think this is HIS opinion, thoughts, considered insight etc.?
Come on, he’s doing what he’s always done – reading a script written by someone else.

Last November 4th marked the end of the America we’ve all known and loved; it is dead and gone. There is no way in hell we’ll come out of the other end of this absolute asshole’s presidency in one piece. I cannot even imagine what this country will become in the next four years.
