No, I don’t know what’s up with the color of his lips either. I think it’s just the tint on CNN’s camera gone haywire.

No ‘conspiracy’ there, just a younger-than-usual subject in front of the cameras.

As men and women age, their lips become increasingly ashen. This is why lipstick was developed: to make women out of their sexual prime appear more youthful (and thus more desirable). Adolescents — particularly pubescent boys — have lips that are redder than adult lips due to the increased bloodflow to them. Elderly men and women typically have skin-tone or color-less lips.

Since these kind of talking-head shows are usually populated by men and women that are well beyond puberty, and are shot under high-intensity lights which tend to wash out color (even makeup), the studio tweaks the color levels of the broadcast to make the flesh tones, etc., more lifelike and appealing.

One of the main ways to do so is to adjust the output, making the picture ‘warmer’. On adults, this results in normal-looking lips (and skin, etc). But on a young teenager, whose lips are already significantly more red than the average adult, that setting could result in his lips being too red.

The make-up could be playing a role in this too, but whatever the reason, there need not be any foul play involved. Just the usual difficulties of trying to balance the video output levels with little to no prep time.

Thank his parents who have taken it upon themselves to homeschool their kids and keep them out of the mind numbing government education system. The home school movement is growing. There’s more like him out there than you think.
