Pressure mounting to dump Steele? Update: Dems mock Steele, GOP with “I’m sorry, Rush” website
posted at 7:12 pm on March 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
Not really — or rather, not yet — but between stumbling into a fight with the hero of the base and making himself a late-night punchline for finding “hipness” in moldy slang, the ice beneath his feet is starting to crack. The RNC chair ideally needs to be good on TV and good at ingratiating himself with grassroots conservatives and their pocketbooks, and so far he’s been terrible at both. And don’t think people haven’t noticed:
Several Republican advisers to Congress and the previous Bush administration told Whispers that they are worried that the war of words is fracturing the party when it should be healing the division between conservatives and moderates in the wake of the 2008 election.
“What is amazing is that Steele was elected because of his communications skills, and it is those skills that are damaging the Republican Party. Before people begin to completely judge him as worthless, Steele needs to focus and knuckle down on building a strong foundation at RNC so we can begin rebuilding our majority,” says a top GOP strategist who has worked for House and Senate Republican leaders. “If his implosion continues, RNC members are likely to call a special session to dump him for an effective chairman. There is not much patience for failure.”…
“At this point, it is as if he has a fundamental misunderstanding of the job description. An RNC chairman who attacks Republicans and insults conservative icons is about as counterproductive as any Democrat could hope for,” says the adviser.
The party’s not going to scramble to oust its first black chairman, but if Steele goes on embarrassing himself he’ll become very easy to ignore, which will destroy his “change” mandate. When he called Rush out on D.L. Hughley’s show and labeled himself the de facto head of the GOP, I assumed it was his way of asserting himself; it was a foolish thing to do given the risk it posed to fundraising, but if he’d stood by his criticism it would have been a show of authority at least insofar as it proved he had the balls to take on Rush and not back down. Instead, he groveled right away. Like I said yesterday, lose/lose. Pull it together, chief.
Update: He knelt before Zod, and now the Democrats are laughing at him.

I think Steele is at least as good as Gillespie was on TV. I think Steele is trying to be too visible. The head of the RNC isn’t usally that visable. He needs to work behind the scenes.

He was a buffoon on the campaign trail and not the most loved public speaker, but he was great at strategy and did wonders for the Dems in ’06 (never mind ’08).

Crusty on March 3, 2009 at 7:20 PM
I don’t think he’d get dumped, period. But yeah, he can easily be ignored if he doesn’t shape up.
I think this is a false construction. And I think it has two negative effects. He didn’t take on Rush in anyway, save for saying that Rush isn’t the party head (which Rush himself says, so that’s not “taking him on”.) What he did was accept the left’s view of Rush.
The two effects: First, it divides those who listen to Rush and think Steele made an idiot of him with his “ugly” and “incendiary” comments and those believe that Rush is overrated and a “kiss the ring” individual (which I assume is true here; I would be happy, but shocked, to be wrong).
And the second is that when the head of RNC marginalizes the most effective, or compelling perhaps is the better word, salesman of conservativism, it discourages people from listening. While the GOP is in the wilderness, the RNC should encourage people to listen to talk radio, to read conservative literature, etc. You don’t make a comeback by hiding your material.

canopfor on March 3, 2009 at 7:23 PM
I’m inclined to agree. This is going to pass, but Steele had better shape up and realize that DL Hughley is not going to help promote the conservative cause by invoking Godwin’s Law.
If Steele’s smart, he’ll go big. Limbaugh’s great at turing out the grassroots: contract his help for fundraisers. It certainly can’t hurt; maybe some of us will actually give money when they beg.
In short, Michael Steele, you should be let off the hook this one time. If any more dustups like this happen, it might be time to broom you.

See, this is where I think you’re off, AP. It took no balls to hit Rush in front of D.L. Hughley, and it took no balls to apologize. Neither was a shining example of leadership, it just meant that, given the audience, he’ll say what it wants to hear. And again, I posted in two other threads, a list of instances when conservatives of varying stripes accused Rush of being on the wrong side of things. Now, there haven’t been any elected Republican to do so, but if your looking for bravery and leadership and balls, why are you looking for it in the elected GOP? And when the GOP does find a spine, I don’t think that its first stand should be against the guy who has been leading the Conservative movement for decades. Honestly, what do you want?

He screwed up. He admitted it. Let him prove us all wrong. Give him some time. If people can give Sarah Palin the benefit of the doubt after the Interview from Hell (couric)or Bobby Jindal for his Mr. Rogers speech, than give Steele a second chance. The cannibalism is getting terrible around here.

Yes, and it’s stupid. The same people who invoke this go on to assault Specter, Olympia Snowe, and others. whatcat on March 3, 2009 at 7:30 PM
Steele’s focus is on ingratiating himself with target constitutencies identified before he won his job – a demographics-driven backward-looking Frummish-Douthatish agenda. Someone might as well do it, some day, but the movement wants to consolidate, focus, and explode in opposition to Obama and the Dems social-psychotic budget/agenda and general incompetence.
The DC-NY metrocon types pull towards “oh my gosh, don’t want to be the party of no, let’s be the party of will look at my alternative if I say pretty please?” The base says, “Party of No? Forget that: Try Party of HELL NO and get out of my face and my pocket!”
CK MacLeod on March 3, 2009 at 7:30 PM
I don’t know about Steele. It seems to me that there are more important things for him to do than dumping on Rush Limbaugh who is a big voice for conservatism.
I would like for him to stop attempting to smack Rush around (futile attempt at best) and start smacking Obama and the Dhimmis around by recruiting real conservative leadership for 2010?
Fred would have been a much better choice.

The Obamacons and the Reagan Dems are ready to be snapped back up. That’s why the Left is so determined to turn Rush into a bogeyman and divide the movement right from the mushy right. It’s a one- or two-day tactic that gets weaker every time they try it. If opposition mounts to the psychotic Democratic budget, it won’t matter.
