Murtha: Um, we need 600,000 troops to pacify Afghanistan

posted at 9:35 pm on March 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

In fairness, he’s not wildly above the estimate of 400,000 given by the former NATO commander there. But since Obama’s European admirers aren’t so admiring that they’re going to send more troops, the estimate might as well be a million or more. Iraq anti-war strategy redux: We don’t have enough boots on the ground so we can’t win so let’s come home.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, who chairs the powerful subcommittee that funds the military, said his figure was based on the country’s history of rigorous fighting and its size.

“That’s what I estimate it would take in a country that size to get it under control,” Murtha said in an interview…

Murtha also said he’s uncomfortable with President Barack Obama’s decision to increase the number of troops in the country by 17,000 before a goal was clearly defined. But he says he anticipates a plan will be developed to train Afghan security forces, and then the U.S. military will get out. He said he sees Afghanistan has more of a diplomatic mission, than a military one.

“I think you’ll see a change,” Murtha said. “I’m confident you’re going to see them only adjusting for a short period of time with these additional troops.”

My knowledge of conditions inside the country is, shall we say, highly imperfect, but as I understand it, the Afghan security forces aren’t anywhere near the levels of competence or manpower of their Iraqi counterparts. Unless Murtha’s talking about some sort of cosmetic effort to train whoever we can train in, say, six months before hurriedly redeploying to Okinawa or wherever, then the “training” here is going to take years and years and years. Which makes me think “training” is just his version of a fig leaf for Obama’s surge, to give the incoming troops some sort of finite mission the completion of which will be grounds to start agitating for withdrawal. Those stirrings I mentioned a few weeks ago are really starting to stir now.

Um, aren’t we there to deny AQ a safe-haven? Aren’t we doing that? I’ve read the reports of Afghanistan being a, literally, 13th century country. And I don’t know if we can/should turn it into a 21th century democracy. All I know is that we screwed the pooch last time we left before getting some type of sane governance in that country, and it resulted in being a breeding ground for people that didn’t just want to control their part of the world, they wanted ours too.

Deny AQ/jihadists a foothold = victory in my book.

Benny if you had clue one about how things go here, you’d know that military service and personnel are honored and appreciated at HA.

That appreciation doesnt automatically extend to everything else a person does later in life, nor should it. See: John Murtha, Oliver Stone, Gray Davis, Chuck Hagel etc. I and 99.9995% of the readers and commenters on this site appreciates and values the service to country of these people. But we dont give them a lifetime pass to act like a tard and expect to be shielded by their service.

Now go home and get your shine box.

With 600,000 troops in Afghanistan (Murtha) we can move toward stemming the loss of 500 million American jobs per month (Pelosi) and maybe “save or create” a few million jobs in the process (Obama). Course, we know those troops will only air-raid Afghan villages (Obama) and go door-to-door terrorizing the people of that nation (Kerry).

Did I miss anyone?

And will Hot Air be hosting a suicide hotline soon?(Preferably a suicide prevention hotline, unlike the one in Minnesota.)

Murtha isnt a Marine. Marines arent Cowards and Murtha is.

The only thing that Murtha is concerned with is bleeding the US taxpayer to pay for all his fat pork projects that he steals from the American people.

Murtha is a crook and a liar and a coward. He is the trifecta of a liberal democrat.

William Amos on March 3, 2009 at 10:02 PM

It is really not very difficult to psychoanalyze Congressman Murtha. Congressman Mutha suffers from what is technically know as the semperideliriumnarcissistmaximus syndrome. It is a long word, as German words often are, but basically means he is a crazy selfish old fart with delusions of grander.

He is also suffering from moderate to sever Alzheimers, but unlike another who suffered from that disease, he does not have the class to suffer with grace.

My treatment protocol would include:

1) Triturating up to very high doses of Donepezil, Galantamine and Rivastigmine.

2) Possible electroshock treatment. The judicial placement of several leaches on his head may also be beneficial.

3) Being placed in a small private room with a couple of Marines including Sgt. MNDavenotPC for some intense counseling may also be needed.

Even with this complete treatment plan, his chances of making any meaningful recovery are unfortunately quite small, but we in my profession do have the responsibility to at least try.

Hi there fellow bloggers. My name is United States Senator John Forbes Kerry from the great state of Massachusetts. You can call me JFK if you want. I was born on December 11, 1943, although people tell me that I look at least 20 years younger. It’s probably my great hair and rugged good looks.

I graduated from Yale in June 1966 in the top 1% of my class. To earn extra money during the summers, I loaded trucks in a grocery warehouse and sold encyclopedias door to door. That is probably one of the reasons that I am so humble. Over my four years at Yale, I maintained a 96 grade average and received a 101 average in my senior year.

I am one of the most senior members of that grand and much loved and respected institution known as the U.S. Senate. Probably the only living Senator even a little bit greater than me is my dear friend Ted Moore Kennedy. I also have a very high IQ. Very high. At least 250 on a bad day. Much higher than that creep who stole the election from me. I know that he stole it because exit polls are never ever wrong.

I am also a great war hero. I set all kinds of records for heroism when I was in Vietnam. I was grievously wounded at least three times yet continued to insist on staying in the fight when lesser men would have given up. I won the bronze star with extra V’s for extra valor and the Silver Star for defeating a whole battalion of NVA with my bare hands.
Sometimes I feel like a had to carry all the water for those other ungrateful swiftboaters.

I sometimes like to chill out after a long day of serving the American people by having a double martini with my good friend Ted. We usually have a servant bring 21 double martinis. I get one and Ted gets one for each of his fingers and each of his toes. Contrary to what some of my very few enemies say I never marry women for just their money. They must also have a pulse. BTW, did I mention that I was in Vietnam? I was also in Cambodia, so don’t forget that!

I would like to think that I am open minded, honest, polite, heroic and trustworthy. And I appreciate the same qualities in others although I am realistic enough to know that no one else could come close to me.

Turn offs: other politicians who spend more on haircuts than I do. That is just not right.

I think Afghanistan will help underscore the difference between a Republican President at wartime, and a Democrat. G.W. Bush was able to turn around a bad situation in Iraq and put us in a position to win. Here is the opportunity for Obama to show that a Democrat can do as well.

My money is on Obama messing it up horribly.

Or maybe cans of spam would be more appropriate?

BTW Murtha cannot hide behind is military service every time he opens his fat mouth.

Did anyone ask Kerry for his opinion?

If you did not hear…he served in vietnam

I know it is slightly off target but is Obama now a war criminal?

Still in Iraq- CHECK
Still in Afghanistan- CHECK

irongrampa on March 3, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Heh. At least one and maybe more of the “Afganis” that flashed by on the terrorist perp walk part of the video were actually US Special Forces. I wonder if the makers of the video know that?

Guardian on March 3, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Prior to burning in hell Murtha should be drawn and quartered SLOWLY for treason. Hmmmm, d & q may be too easy on him.

Perhaps vertical burial up to the neck (still squealing) and let the animals finish him, a favorite punishment of the British.

kooziegirl on March 3, 2009 at 10:08 PM

I like the way you think! :-)

Murtha needs a blanket party.

One of the proudest accomplishments in my life is being a US Marine. I can not express my dislike of this turd.

Wade on March 3, 2009 at 10:32 PM

It is always interesting how civilians (present company excepted) forget that you have to grow soldiers, not mint them after a few weeks training. Senior NCO’s need 10 years to develop into good leaders, officers take even longer.
We can train the Afghan Army all we want but they need leaders to take over for us.

thuljunior on March 3, 2009 at 10:32 PM

Can 600K troops fit on Okinawa?

It's Vintage, Duh on March 3, 2009 at 10:32 PM

Now is the time to recruit and train 500k queer troops that can root out the bad guys in Afghanistan or at least help them pick out better garments. Give them all extra money because well, they’re queer and it’s their “collective” right.

Any ideas on how best to arm them other than hand bags?

Nah, I’ll save my ammo for the corruption trial.

Dusty on March 3, 2009 at 10:35 PM

Only conservatives can win wars. Liberals just get Americans killed and then they bug out.

I get tired though of hearing how things aren’t solved militarily. EVERYTHING is solved militarily. You kill the other guy and keep on living. This is victory.

I’ll bet Putin is loving this right now.

To paraphrase Heinlein, “Ask the city fathers of Carthage if violence never solved anything.”

Bishop on March 3, 2009 at 10:51 PM

Wow, what a guy, more than willing to accuse innocent Marines of murder, surrender at all costs in Iraq and still Murtha has more than enough moronic lunacy left over to turn Afghanistan from a military strategy that needs a measured, intelligent boost into a full blown, neck deep, pissing contest, meat grinder to make Da Nang look like tea and cookies.

benny shakar on March 3, 2009 at 9:38 PM

As a Marine myself, I reserve the right to trash that sub-human waste of viable organs at any time. Murtha is an ex-Marine, not a Marine. If his sorry ass ever shows his face at a Marine Corps Ball ever again, you’ll find yourself with a room full of people with no Earthly idea where the shot came from.

Afghan security forces … Iraqi counterparts.

AP, I wouldn’t go so far as to call them counterparts. We’re talking about two countries that don’t even share a common language, and have entirely different histories and cultures. Whether you’re for or against a continued effort there, that’s a good place to start your consideration.

commenter on March 3, 2009 at 10:57 PM

Murtha is a fat old buffoon and an idiot. Period.
He may have been a Marine but now he is a political demagogue and a characterization of everything that justifies term limits and prosecution for waste, fraud and abuse of Public Funds.

He brings home the pork in his district so the fools keep re-electing him, like so many others that sit on both sides of the aisles.

I spent 28 years in the Military and will feel free to trash him when I choose. He deserves it and I earned that right.

benny shakar on March 3, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Ahem. He’s no longer a Marine. And having been either of the above does not make him immune to comment.

And if that stuff is so important, the closest Obama been to being a Marine is to wear the shirt during a pickup game. Oh, I forgot, he became a Jarhead the first time he tried to board Marine One — and it looked like it hurt.

Jamson64 on March 3, 2009 at 11:04 PM

Not much worse than a military person using their service to silence Americans. Does the military not serve a nation of civlians? It seems somewhat disgusting to me. When I hear or read such attempts I realize that motives are not pure. They may have pretended to join the service for the right reasons but in these cases I know different. Do they not commit to protect Americans and their rights??

Jamson64 on March 3, 2009 at 11:09 PM
