Steele to Rush: I’m sorry; Update: Beck, Coulter knock Steele; Update: DNC chair hits Steele
posted at 6:36 pm on March 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
Rahm Emanuel yesterday:
Mr. Limbaugh has “called for President Obama to fail. That’s his view,” Mr. Emanuel said. “And whenever a Republican criticizes him, they have to run back and apologize to him and say they were misunderstood.”
Michael Steele today:
“My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh,” Steele said in a telephone interview. “I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”…
“I went back at that tape and I realized words that I said weren’t what I was thinking,” Steele said…
“He brings a very important message to the American people to wake up and pay attention to what the administration is doing,” Steele said. “Number two, there are those out there who want to look at what he’s saying as incendiary and divisive and ugly. That’s what I was trying to say. It didn’t come out that way. … He does what he does best, which is provoke: He provokes thought, he provokes the left. And they’re clearly the ones who are most excited about him.”
Asked if he planned to apologize, Steele said: “I wasn’t trying to offend anybody. So, yeah, if he’s offended, I’d say: Look, I’m not in the business of hurting people’s feelings here. … My job is to try to bring us all together.”
Rush’s fans will hold Steele in contempt for criticizing him in the first place and Rush’s critics will hold him in contempt for apologizing now. Well played, sir. Exit question: Whose contrition was more groveling, Steele’s or Phil Gingrey’s?
Update: Coulter repeats the boss’s point from earlier today about how it’s perfectly okay to criticize Rush. Since when? Did CPAC pass a resolution?
Update: Rod Dreher skewers Steele: “Please Rush, don’t hurt me!”
Update: Tim Kaine seizes the moment:
“I was briefly encouraged by the courageous comments made my counterpart in the Republican Party over the weekend challenging Rush Limbaugh as the leader of the Republican Party and referring to his show as ‘incendiary’ and ‘ugly.’ However, Chairman Steele’s reversal this evening and his apology to Limbaugh proves the unfortunate point that Limbaugh is the leading force behind the Republican Party, its politics and its obstruction of President Obama’s agenda in Washington.”

That is the dumbest thing I have read in a post on a forum anywhere on the Internet including the DU and the Daily KOS.

You’re trying your best to give Atlanta a bad name, aren’t you?
notropis on March 2, 2009 at 8:14 PM
What are you babbling about?
Rush rarely says he’s a Republican;
in point of fact, he said on the air before the election, that he was endorsing McCain as the Republican candidate (big hold your nose for Rush!) and giving money to the RNC for the first time ever because he knew that Obama’s election would be such a disaster.
He doesn’t make verbal stumbles or ill-thought out phrases that he has to take back; after 20+ years on the air, 20-30 million listeners and a $400 million contract, his shows are almost flawless.
Don’t you ever listen to him?
Jenfidel on March 2, 2009 at 8:15 PM
That’s disappointing to say the least. That was a golden opportunity missed.
If he can’t recognize a hanging curve, how can he be expected to carry the team.

There is a difference in disagreeing with someone and calling them divisive and ugly. And I don’t consider him the head of the party but I do consider him the person who gives the best explanation of conservatism. I realize he is unfettered by the need to be reelected and that gives him a lot of freedom but politicians should be better at making their arguments.

It is very rare that MM disagrees with Rush or Vice versa.
Its not because of a secret decoder ring club that AP is not allowed to attend. It’s simply a thought process.
AP lacks Testicular Fortitude and that bloodline is the problem in the RNC. At one time he was pushing McCain down our throats then switched sides when it was convenient. A conservative he is not. I do find his writing style and Puns quite entertaining but strangely similar to Jim….hmmm

Here’s an idea:
Steele goes on Limbaugh tomorrow, they both give a good chuckle, talk about how “their plan” worked — and how they knew that stooge DL Hughely would play right into their hands — and that NOW THAT THE ENTIRE NATION IS LISTENING, Michael Steele has a few things to say about Barack Obama’s childish war with Rush Limbaugh — and his epically disasterous plans for the nation. Then, Steele says what he should have said when those moronic left wing Obamabots were interviewing him.
Then Limbaugh and Steele banter a little more, talk about how they can’t believe even the president’s imbecilic press secretary played right into their hands — making certain that when Steele spoke, people would be listening.
Sound like a plan?
Rational Thought on March 2, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Michael Steele just proved Rahm Emmanual’s point, IN REAL TIME.
Everytime the GOP says something bad about Rush, they run to Rush and apologize HOURS later.

Shows how really weak Obama is that an “entertainer” has him worried.
William Amos on March 2, 2009 at 8:41 PM
Let’s see here. People are protesting the fact that the government is taking action to help fix the economy by actually doing something instead of playing it off like Bush did for years.
Uh-huh. Those tea-parties are just small-time campaign rallies that makes you look dumb.
Why would any independantly thinking American protest the government trying to make things better? The housing bill HELPS the American by making sure he/she is not going to get kicked out of his/her home because of crashing home values.
The Reinvestment act INCREASES unemployment insurance AND Medicare benifits for the unemployed.
Ask yourself this. Why weren’t there any “tea parties” when President Bush passed the first TARP act?

This is just stupid. Obama has been POTUS for six weeks. Many of his plans won’t come into affect for at least six months and everyone knows that.
You can’t tie Bushes failure with the economy to Obama trying to repair it.
The reason why the economy is failing is because banks are still posting losses. Had Bush attempted to do more than just some BS TARP and some half-baked rebates we might have been on an upswing with a recovery.
You must really assume that American people are that dumb.
ckoeber on March 2, 2009 at 8:47 PM
Rush is the conservative with a megaphone. Conservatism needs his voice, as well as the voices of Levin, Beck, Hannity, Ingraham, Coulter, Malkin et al.
Steele and Republican politicos need to heed these voices, for they speak to more Americans than they imagine.
onlineanalyst on March 2, 2009 at 8:49 PM
The problem is, that you cannot reform the RNC or the GOP from the _inside_ Steele, who was once a good conservative choice, is now on the inside, and cannot do what needs to be done.

Sooooo…..
Let the economy crash and look at each other when unemployment is at 20-30% and the companies that have money are barely struggling?
If the majority of people wanted inaction the majority would have voted for McCain.
You don’t get it that Barack Obama is doing EXACTLY what he said he was going to do when he got elected?
Why would people protest what they have voted for?
His approval rate has stayed 50% (most times above 50%) this whole time!
Your protests don’t match with what the majority of Americans feel about Obama!
That;s why the protests are dumb.

Saltysam on March 2, 2009 at 8:53 PM
AP, I don’t know if you’re still reading this thread, but I’m a little surprised that you think that fellow conservatives have never criticized Rush and lived. Many over at NRO have, and have never apologized for it. Hundreds thought he was wrong on Dubai Ports. In fact, I remember when I was living in Orlando around 2004, Beck himself lighting into Rush for accepting Bush policies that he would have never accepted during the Clinton years (I think it was about a Free Trade issue). Rush gets criticized by the Far Left, the MSM, the Blue Dog Dems., the RINO Republicans, and the Libertarians. I’ve also read criticisms from RedState, Hugh Hewitt, The Weekly Standard, and as I mentioned before NRO. He is quite possibly the most criticized man in modern politics, and yes I’m including Bush. So what do you want? Do you just want the spectacle of an elected official “standing up to” Rush? Just so you feel like the movement reaches beyond the stereotype some have accepted about Rush and his audience?
Weight of Glory on March 2, 2009 at 8:54 PM
You’re kidding, right? Or are you just a plain ol’ fool?
Obambi can never be the solution, because he and his ilk (like Acorn, Reid, Pelosi, Barney Franks, and so on) are the problem. They caused the mortgage mess by making a free home another welfare right for their constituents… which caused banks and investors in that mortgage slop to go south. Everything else just follows downhill. This goes back to Clinton and all the moronic, let-me-bribe-you-with-free-welfare crap Dimmocrats, trying to bribe their way into power.
And to answer your question ^^^ Yeah! Judging by the inescapable nightmare that is the O’Bambi presidency, the 52 or so million Americans who voted for him ARE that dumb.

That is just hopeful sillyness from the GOP/Coservatives. No sane American assumed that as soon Obama got into office everything would get better. He repeatedly said this was going to be a tough year.
On top of that, people notice that he is constantly trying to do things to turn the economy around.
People are not blaming Obama for the current downturn. People ARE blaming the GOP/Conservatives for not even trying to work with him to get things done.

The American people are the ones voting with their dollars and selling off the markets. The markets are forward looking and this is why they are selling off, because investors don’t have any confidence in Obama’s punitive policies. If they did, the market’s would be doing better even if they didn’t rally back into a bull market.
This is Obama’s market crash, but I don’t think he cares. If he did he wouldn’t be continually penalizing investment and savings in the face of it. I don’t think he values capitalism and hopes to replace it with something else, and many investors, the American people, are clearly of a similar opinion.

William Amos on March 2, 2009 at 9:03 PM
Ah yes, the government is doing a *wonderful* job of fixing up the economy. You know what will really help get American business roaring again? Dramatically increasing energy costs with an idiotic cap-and-trade scheme. That should get the economic motor purring, until the gigantic tax increases kick in next year, and then watch out, baby! I’ll bet Obama will have created or saved 4,000 points of market value by the time he’s done!
I have the increasing sense that liberals not only don’t understand economics… they don’t even understand what an economy *is.* They think the economy is a bunch of shadowy fat cats sitting on top of huge piles of money, which they spend all day gleefully counting until the IRS comes to pry it from their sweaty fingers. The painful lesson of 2009 will be the difference between spending money and creating wealth. The total amount of goods, industrial capital, and productive labor in the country did not increase a bit, just because Obama waved his magic wand and conjured up a geyser of stimulus dollars. The only thing deficit spending of that magnitude does is devalue every existing dollar, and forcibly divert the energies of capitalism away from productive endeavors to non-productive ones. The buggy whip industry suffered terribly from the introduction of the automobile, and those working Americans impoverished by the sudden collapse of their buggy-whip-factory employers would certainly have appreciated a billion dollar bailout.
Whatever makes you think increasing unemployment insurance is going to *stimulate* the economy? The only thing it’s going to do is provide a bigger safety net to people blown out of the market by Obama’s disastrous policies. People don’t become productive until they climb *out* of the safety net. Productivity is what drives economic growth. You’re boasting about the wonders of a leaky derelict ship because it’s got an impressive assortment of high-quality lifeboats.
We’ve got a few trillion more reasons to have a tea party now than we did after the first TARP act, which was passed in the bygone era of several months ago, when a hundred billion dollars was a huge sum that we had to think carefully about spending. Assuming they’re not clinging to life with those expanded Medicare benefits and waiting for FCCER to pull the plug on them, there might be a few more unemployed people at next years’ tea parties.

That cap-and-trade tax will do more to get us off of oil than any of these tax incentives proposed. We ALREADY HAVE a lot of tax credits/incentives for alternative energy. Why aren’t businesses taking advantage?
Because the cost of polluting the environment is so low. The high price of gas/oil was one of the BEST things to happen to America because it RAISED our awareness.
You can only see as far as today. Putting the cap tax will get us moving to alternative energy faster than any of your tax credits that has been around for years.
As for the economy, your entire statement only focuses on the people who have money already. Let’s give them more money!
You want growth! How about giving everyone a chance to succeed? Not everyone comes from the “nuclear” family making $120,000 a year minimum and has savings to go to college already stashed up. Most people DON’T WANT A HANDOUT. They just want a FAIR SHOT.
The entire conservative ideology revolves around me, me, me.

Easy. Answer is here.

So much for them having an independent voice. Disagree with Rush “Jim Jones” Limbaugh, get put out of your misery.
So much for the Democrats having a monopoly on thuggery.
sethstorm on March 2, 2009 at 9:13 PM
Limbaugh isn’t the symbol of real conservatism. It’s two people: Thomas Jefferson in the 18th century, and Ron Paul now.
Steele should say “Yo what up homiez, our party is listening to Dr. P now that has conservative policies shizzle neizzle”.
“Non-interventionism is the new black”

I really hope that the obamites are stupid enough to continue to attack Wall Street. If it keeps crashing dont look for a GOP landslide in 2012 look instead for the American people to cheer for an Obama Impeachment.
I really hope the democrats are that stupid.

Heh, nice phrase. I believe we’ve moved on to coprophagia by now. Obama secretes, the media eats and repeats.
Spirit of 1776 on March 2, 2009 at 9:15 PM
dean you need to see a doctor. the nut ron paul will NEVER, EVER get over 10% in any GOP primary. Stop wasting your time supporting him
ousoonerfan15 on March 2, 2009 at 9:16 PM
Good God you are clueless. Just read a few of the ACORN threats in this blog. Or better yet the Obama people who show up at his rallies expecting homes and cars and jobs.
Talk about the ME ME ME attitude its a way of life for the left.
William Amos on March 2, 2009 at 9:16 PM
The only thing that Jefferson and Paul had in common is slanderous newsletters/papers. Paul couldn’t tie Jefferson’s shoes.

Many of the people that the housing plan is designed to help had their homes for 20+ years, for starters. Part of the problem is that a lot of homes’ values are dropping and as such homes that are nearby are being affected. Comments about gnats and planktons are just dumb, btw.

For the liberals in here, please try to defend your points by logical precise arguments, instead of touting party lines. For better guidance, please look into some of the quotes posted by DeathToMediaHacks, who is also a liberal, and posts regularly, but with more cogent arguments.
The overall intentions voiced by some of the liberals sound good, but till date I have not found one who can answer the very simple question : how do you intend to pay for it? Give me any coherent financial plan, so that we can at least debate over concrete points.

So that’s where Geithner’s been, brushing up on his speaking skills. Good thing, I guess, his last outing was a disaster!
